The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 APSC E-mount lens is a really good all rounder for the FX30 if you haven't previously invested in full frame or don't want to. Pair it with the 11mm 1.8 and it can compete with the FX3 in 90% of use cases. For those two lenses plus the FX30 it will cost less than the FX3 body only and at that point it's really just low light performance that sets them apart.
@@JeffCorcelius it is indeed, barely any focus breathing, super quite autofocus, in lens stabilization, sharp, fixed aperture - just make sure 'Distortion comp.' is set to auto under 'Lens Compensation', to fix the pin cushion distortion and you are good to go! Hey Jason, Thank you for the good and informative video! Could you also make a video about Full Frame and Super35 in the future? Nowadays the industry tells you that full frame is the better sensor and that super35 only has a "crop". The crop is perceived as bad, which I can't agree with... Almost no cinema films are shot with Full Frame and Full Frame comes from photography. If you look at the big cinema cameras, like Arri and RED, they also work with a Super35 sensor. Full Frame is a special look, which in most cases has in my opinion a much too large depth of field, but then everyone is saying it’s "cinematic". Of course, full frame cameras have advantages, such as low light performance, but as a filmmaker, do you want the full frame look in every video? I am using the Sony A7 iv at the moment, but almost always use Super35 mode for videos and Full Frame for stills. Thanks for reading and best regards, Manos Aronis
while i agree with super35 being a brilliant format RED and Arri are designing more Large Format sensors (Full Frame). It is becoming more popular that cinematographers are choosing the Arri Alexa Mini LF for their large scale feature film and commercial productions. Super35 certainly does not mean it is a disadvantage though, just a different look
Well said we shoot our film in Super 35. Much better look in my opinion. I know a lot of RUclipsrs who are hyping FF. FF is good for pictures and portraits.
Nice! Pairing all of this with a speed booster, wouldn't it go back to its original focal with no vignetting? i never understood speed booster until i seen a couple videos today and im still confused 😅
question... This camera intrigues me. I have a lot of $$$$ in Canon EF lenses and love them . With and adapter will they work on this camera. My dads studio always used Sony(camera bodies) and Canon (lenses). Love the way you break stuff down. Thanks in advance. Peace and Happy Holidays
I do agree but I actually went with the full frame version for the FX30. Just because of what I generally shoot and the fact that when I upgrade to a fx 3 or 6 I won't have to sell a lens. You can find new copies of both versions at the same price on eBay usually.
It's an old and relatively cheap lens that does a very good job in normal light. I use it most often together with PZ 10-20 too. In poorer lighting conditions, I use other lenses.
Excellent video Jason ! And I'm not even a Sony shooter (I shoot Olympus OMD). Sending this to a Sony user friend who is asking me for advice. Cheers! 🤟😎
Not in the way you're thinking. A 35mm f/2 lens designed for full frame would look exactly the same as a 35mm f/2 designed for APS-C, when used on the same camera. The focal length (35mm) and aperture (f/2) are physical, optical qualities that are consistent no matter what sensor size the lens was designed for. The only difference is how big of an image circle is projected out the back of the lens. The objects in the projected image, however, are the same size for two lenses of the same focal length, and the depth of field is therefore the same too. The difference comes in the fact that to get the same shot on APS-C, you have to shoot wider or farther away from your subject, so to get the same shot your depth of field would be deeper. The amount of light is the same because the lens is projecting the same image with the same optical qualities no matter the sensor size, but your depth of field ends up being one f-stop deeper because you had to widen out or move back. So f/2 on an APS-C will look like f/2.8 on a full-frame after accounting for framing. Hopefully that makes sense. It's a fairly simple concept, but does take a while to wrap your head around it.
There isn't anything wrong with using FF lenses. As long as you are aware of what you're getting. You have to multiply the focal length AND THE APERTURE to understand what image you're going to get crapped. Lens makers love that most of the time people only convert focal length. The DoF will not be the same on APS-C without conversion. The other thing is the whole notion that a FF lens uses the sharpest part of the lens on APS-C has been debunked. Super sharp lenses can look about as good cropped, but almost always you will have a worse image than a native lens of similar quality. That's not saying it's always bad, as many times there isn't an APS-C version (or they are trash quality). That being said. I'm popping the 16-35 f/4 PZ on my Fx30. Works for what I do on RUclips and I love having the aperture ring.
It is lens to lens basis on every single lens you use. Some lenses perform different due to manufacturing copies. I have done almost 50 lens review videos to see the difference
It really depends. If you have a high quality lens and you crop in you are going to magnify its manufacturing defects and flaws. You can observe this effect with tele converters (or doublers in ENG). On the other hand, poor quality lenses might have really bad edges that might look worse than cropping in. IMHO this was mostly an issue on cheap lenses up to maybe 2010s. Nowadays even the cheapest lenses from well known brands are pretty decent compared to what they used to sell us.
Hi Jason! Sorry for my english but i’ll try to be clear as possible. If i put my F2.8 full frame lens on a apsc camera, the lens still remain an F2.8 lens or it’s quite darker than an F2.8 full frame lens put on full frame camera ?
Viltrox has a EF-E speedbooster. Am I missing something out or why isn't anyone mentioning putting a speedbooster on the FX30? The viltrox is like 100 euros, which is still better then 2x the price of the camera house for a fullframe.
because with the speed booster you need to use EF lenses. Clearly using Canon lenses on the sony is not as efficient and accurate with auto focus and object tracking. But if you use manual focus than amazing
I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and its not good for video, autofocus is super loud the mic picks up the noise, plus no form of stabilization in lens. Amazing for photography, super sharp and great colours or if capturing audio is not a requirement. However the 50mm Sony 1.8 APSC is a super cheap option that's great for video
I have the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and have used this to film various videos with no issues with autofocus noise (its quite quiet), colors and sharpness are great. I also have the viltrox 13mm 1.4 and like this one as well. both of hefty and I dont think you will be disappointed with either.

If you put 24mm f/1.8 lens on an apsc camera and 35mm f/2.8 lens on a full frame camera, both give almost similar results(view & bokeh). Because 24mm×1.5=36mm and 1.8×1.5=2.7. I have tested this on my A7M3.
yes they technically are. Sony are designing them with now video in mind with their new XD linear focus motors to cater for video. Only reason I made this video as people asked this question
3 minutes in where you say there's a difference between using FF glass or APS-C glass. There isn't a difference. A 50mm FF lens will look exactly the same as a 50mm APS-C lens on an APS-C sensor. Only difference is the size of the physical lens as you mentioned earlier. This is why I never do 'equivalent' focal lengths. A 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens. If I shoot on an s35 camera, I know my FOV for any given lens. Nobody is shooting on an Alexa 35 and calling a 50mm lens an 85mm 'equivalent'. This should have stopped a long, long time ago. If you're referring to an APS-C lens by what focal length is written on the side, but then saying you need to multiply a FF lens by 1.5x then your logic is flawed. They're both the exact same! Simple question - When you stick that 18-135 (APS-C) lens on your FX30, are you multiplying it by 1.5x? Have they put the wrong numbers on the side? No? Then why would you do it with a FF lens?
FOV and Bokeh of a 24mm f/1.8 lens (either Full Frame lens or APSC lens) on an APSC camera is similar as that of a 35mm f/2.8 (Full Frame lens) lens on a Full Frame camera.
A difference by saying it uses a slightly different part of the glass as I mentioned. The fact that Large Format (full frame) is becoming a norm people understand what a 50mm is like on LF sensors and don’t understand it’s like using a 75mm on their full frame camera. This should have been explained enough for everyone to understand. I am a filmmaker and I understand how crop factors work my friend
