***** The more I look at this smaller Dell the more I think maybe this is the right laptop for me. I am starting to realise to get a really premium device you have to spend loads. Well here is why i've had real problems making a decision. I am like Dave in that I do not like desktop devices. I currently have a 15.6 inch laptop and it stays 90% of the time on my desk connected to a 23 inch screen. I must have dual displays as i cannot work with just one. I realise you are paying a premium for having the portability but still. Will the drop down to a 13 inch model really be that bad? Is it easy to get a hdmi convertor? Would this be a good choice? Thanks.
It might sound dumb, but I personally think that they put the xps plate on the bottom so that the serial numbers don't fade. They are infact very important to be able to read. Also, I think it looks better with the plate than just random stickers on it.
That's true, even smartphone's that used to have the emei & other serial numbers on the outside due to noon removable batteries have the numbers in the menu settings because they would wear off. So it's an obvious reason, in sure he would've got the reason if it was an apple laptop that had this on there laptops, also while playing with the camera view on the xps 13 in BestBuy, there was no problem with the angle of the camera, that is unless your looking straight ahead over the screen, since the screen is usually on a table & when you face the screen at a downward angle *video conferencing or just looking at the screen* it looks the same as a top bezel cam. It's really obvious & writers that he chooses or just plainly overlooked this.
Compared to your newer videos this one seems really "amateure", funnily enough this one was the very first video I saw of you and I immideatily thought: "Wow he is so professional and this review is awesome" You can be proud of yourself, you stepped up from awesome to even more awesome. Onto 1 Million!
According to my work's Dell rep the door was originally designed to house the windows OEM sticker in the USA. But when windows moved to on-MotherBoard reg keys the purpose was kind of lost. So they just stick the service tag and serial number under there now. Why didn't they change it? Because the unit was already ordered for production and the cost to change it was way too much.
I actually appreciate what they did with that hatch. They're legally obligated to put certain information on the laptop somewhere, and instead of leaving it in the open and making it all ugly like some PC makers, they hid it quite cleverly. I think they hide some Windows stuff under the battery as well instead of having gunky stickers.
Hey Dave you probably won't see this, but this video actually convinced to buy my laptop and subscribe to you, and almost 3 years later I couldn't have been happier with both choices. It's been great to see you going from 500 subscribers to 1 million in such a short amount of time. Congrats man
I got the base $800 model for my mom. This is the most thorough review of the new XPS 13 that I've seen, by far, and you're the first that I've seen dispute the battery life claims for normal use. Thanks for putting this out there Dave.
Very interesting to see your style evolve progressively in your first few videos, when we've seen your more modern videos for years without having seen the original ones. You definitely already had quality content, but also I can tell you've improved. You're more efficient at giving information, and you are better at giving interesting or overall insight. Frankly, good job, you came a long way!
Wow. I've forgotten how a serious none flashy review was like. Every youtuber I seem to watch for reviews is all in your face and trying to pump me up. I appreciate the laid back and down to earth review style of this video. Subbed. Keep up the nice work.
Glad to see how your video style has improved so much and I've grown to love the newer style a lot! Also, it'd be really great to see you do a review on the more affordable and fairly new Acer Aspire S13.
This review is ok. Saying that the 1080p screen is "nothing to write home about" is pretty shallow considering you and myself have a Macbook Air (2013) and there screens are almost one of the worst for the high end ultrabook category especially with the new XPS 13 Infinity display. Also this pretty obvious that this review is pretty biased considering the whole video we can see you use a MBA/P. There's a reason I got the new XPS 13, it's better than my MBA, even if the MBA got upgraded this year it'll still be better since Apple never implants touchscreens which on Windows makes a better experience and with Windows 10 coming out in a few months will be even better.
Hey Chris, fully agree. The MBA screen is pretty weak. I hope I don't cone across as biased though. I definitely prefer this notebook over the current MBA. I do use a MBP for my regular work so I just use it for video editting. I'm also stoked for windows 10. Their stuff looked pretty tight today
He's right the screen isn't anything to "write home about" I just came back from the Microsoft store and was kinda disappointed. While yeah it may have a higher resolution than the Air, but compared to other screens on the market it's pretty dim/dull overall due to the Matt screen, and not very vibrant or sharp. The look of the laptop is top notch though, I love the look and the extremely thin bezel. I'm hoping to see the 3200x1800 qHD+ screen in person soon as I'm sure that will just enhance the overall appearance of this laptop.
I'd say compared to the MBA/P, the 1080p screen is something to write home about. Compared to other high end ultrabooks, it's kinda expected. Now that optional WQHD+ display, that is something to write home about.
Great review! I like that you talked about gaming performance. I think yours is the only review that mentioned it. Keep it up, you do a better job than a lot of the other review channels on youtube!
Hey man, just wanted to give some kudos. I was looking for a review of the XPS 13 after extended use (to see if any gripes come up) when I stumbled upon your channel. I just love your reviews. The video editing is great, the way you look at and think about tech is similar to mine (i.e. naturally awesome ;)) and you manage to fit a lot of knowledge into a short span of time. In fact, this review was so good I immediately watched 3 more. And even though I've used RUclips for god knows how long, you are in fact my first subscription. Of all the content I've encountered on RUclips, yours was the first to inspire a sub. Congrats. :D
Jonas Lindström And it's hard to believe you only started in January this year. The newer ones do look better, but still this isn't bad at all. And it's not just about the quality of video editing, it's the attitude you have, your articulation... I think your channel is an oasis in the desert!
The hatch is there to cover the FCC info the the sticker that otherwise would be on the keyboard area. If you ask me it is a great idea. I rather see that than a bunch of unsightly tags.
I just bought this laptop in 2021. Going to upgrade the ssd and if I like it long term, will probably buy a newer XPS. Great videos Dave! I've recently subbed and your videos are superior to other tech reviewers!
Thanks for this review Dave! It really helped me get my new laptop and I've been loving it so far. You make such great, extensive and in-depth videos and you really go the extra mile for us viewers. Thanks for touching on even the most minute detail, it really makes all the difference:)
Great review and very well done video, great job! One thing I'd like to point out is that the vent on the bottom is actually not exhaust, those are for air intake. The notebook actually exhausts out the back similarly to how a MacBook does. Also, I think the hatch on the bottom is part for looks and part to protect the service tag from wear and fading.
hey jfox, i didn't realize that! It's hard to tell the flow direction of air when it's so gentle. It does get pretty warm down there, maybe it's just the heat radiating in general. Thanks for the heads up
Just scrolled down to this old video in your channel. I really like the sarcastic undertone here. XD You should insert this kind of dry humor more in your vids. You're good at it.
Metal plate at the back is for protecting the serial numbers from fading. Previous models have the serial numbers exposed where they would fade eventually after around 1 year. Hard for people who work in dell's service centre if they don't know the laptops' serial numbers.
great review, love how you do point out the flaws with the products some reviewers seem to not even touch on those things enough. Would be great to see a 'what laptop to buy' type video. Would love to get a Razer blade.... one day
Great review! You have a good voice and great editing, subscribed! The only think I would want to know more about; is how the trackpad compares to the gold standard that is the Mac!
In the case that it hasn't been made known, the AC adapter LED is merely a diagnostic indicator as well as the LED for the power button. Dell has integrated Built In Self Tests and diagnostic LED indicators for all their PCs. They look pretty but are very utilitarian. I hope this helps!
Dude, you're so chill lol. It was kinda nice that you weren't insanely loud. Also, how does it run League of Legends? That's been my game of choice as of lately and I am looking to upgrade my old Dell Latitude to something sleeker. I would opt for the 8GB/i7 if I were to shell out the cash for the XPS 13, but I am curious to see how it would run that at max settings.
Hi Dave, i'm also a Mac user, love OS X. And using Macbook Air 13" 2014 right now. but in my job line, there's an app that can only use by Windows. so i ended up using Bootcamp on my Air. When Dell introduced this new XPS, i kinda tempted to buy it. U think XPS is better than Air, in price and features comparison? Air is getting old, Apple is getting boring... Air got no Retina too. Thx.
Haha the starcraft quip! I always go to play it to relax but end up hating it every time. Awesome review for an awesome product, I'll be getting one for school next year.
The hatch is there because old dells and alienwares serial number use to be at the bottom. Eventually after extensive use they would start fading away. Therefore it serves to protect the serial numbers from fading away.
Thank you so much! Your reviews are so in depth and you show excellent footage. Hope to see more vids like these in the future! P.s. You have finally shown me why to buy this notebook
It's pretty important to state which browser you used for your tests. Chrome is a massive resource hog and tends to leak memory, which drains your battery like mad.
Agreed! Chrome drains battery. I've gone back to IE, which to be fair, with version 11 is a good browser now. Do I miss AdBlock Plus? Not really, I use an ad-block hosts file which does well enough. I do still use Chrome, sometimes, but not missing it.
Dave Lee, you can adjust trackpad settings under PC Settings - PC and Devices - Mouse and Touchpad. Other than that, fantastic video! I am honestly very surprised at the number of subscribers you have! I figured this was a well-known tech channel with lots of subscribers, and didn't realize that it wasn't until after I watched the video! Presentation Skills - CHECK Speech Skills - CHECK Camera Skills - CHECK Video Editing Skills - CHECK With continued videos of this quality, you are guaranteed to get a lot more subscribers!
Great vid, very professional on the review. Subscribed! Ha u remind me of one of my friends back in high school. Used to head to PC cafe and play counterstrike or StarCraft bw all the time. Hope to see more vids from ya and good luck.
I received the touchscreen version a day after i filmed the review but it's not my cup of tea. It looks gorgeous up close but at regular viewing distances I find them similar. Color rendition on the high-res version looks a little better though. I'm also not a touch screen notebook person. Too much arm lifting and I'm kinda lazy like that. Games are unplayable at high-res (same video card). But.. If you're a regular touch screen notebook user, and you don't play games AND you don't mind taking a 15-20% battery life hit, then go for it!
I've been able to comfortably hit the advertised 12 hours on the macbook air as well as the 8 hours on the macbook pro retina 15. Granted I had to lower screen brightness to about 50%. But I feel Dell stretched their numbers just a bit on this one. Stellar notebook nonetheless
Hi, dave, I love your reviews. For the screen thing, I found a setting in BIOS "unobstrusive mode", which allows to press Fn + F7 to turn down all the lights, including the keyboard light, power button, screen, charging indicator ~ I found that nice if you just want to turn off the display without sleeping it
The plate on the bottom is for covering these codes and partnumbers, so Dell has not to put them on the outside of the bottom plate where everyone can see them and where they are covering the brilliant Aluminium.
this laptop this one of the best laptop in market rn and I haven't notice any problems with this laptop.I have played GTA 5, crysis3 and more and I didn't get hot at all and fan is fucking quite .its way better than Mac book
btw the touchpad settings are built into the OS. Microsoft designed the trackpad, so that's why there aren't any drivers. Go into settings>PCs&Devices>Mouse & Touchpad Touchpad still isn't great, not very precise when having to click on two small objects close together, the mouse pointer just seems stuck..
Great review! I'm eyeing the new XPS 13. Any plan to do that soon? Torn between that and the new Zenbook 305CA. A fanless notebook sounds great, but performance is definitely an issue. Would love your feedback
I really liked your Full review of the new Dell XPS 13" (2015) You helped me getting the dell back into my buy options. Thx also for showing the blizzard games, that helped me a lot. At this time in Europe there is only the QHD+ Version avalible, its up to 1500€ for the i7-5500u. ahh... 45 dB its still hight, isnt it?
Thank you Dave. Thanks to your review and some of my friends opinions, I am going with the XPS 13. I'm not too tech savvy so I rely on guys like you for the help. Thank you. Quick question. Will this laptop be good for simple video editing. Family stuff, vacations, etc. Just for fun.
Dave, how do you like the trackpad in comparsion to Apple who got it absolutely right. As for battery life, do you really need 15hrs? Usually most people sit 4-5 hours, 15? When do you sleep and live? lol Not an attack just a playful one. Regardless, your presentation is excellent, hope you do well on here.
great review that made me subscribe! what's up the panning shots speeding up and slowing abruptly though? Is it to do with the slider or hopefully just because of some FPS conversion interpolation?
i filmed the panning shots with a skateboard. Didn't have a slider at the time. But I did pick one up recently so hopefully future videos will have smoother shots! You can see my review of it here: ruclips.net/video/qWl7vdTFJqM/видео.html
Awesome review. Very Informative. I just subscribed to your channel after watching this. Yeah I do love my macbook pro retina and the current OS. Beside this I also think DELL did a very good job here.
Wow, great review! Informative yet laid back. Subscribed! Just one question, you do by any chance play Dota 2? Could you please try playing it and tell me what kind of FPS you're getting? I would really help me out when deciding whether to buy one. Would be super cool of you. (it's free to play on Steam)
Just a question, how much time you get on your 13'' MacBook Air (in average usage scenario, web browsing, casual video and music playback, 40-60% brightness)? Can you please test it (although if you use MBA for some time I believe you already know) and reply me or make a video if you have time. I think those "up to 15 hours" claims are reffering to i3 configuration at low brightness, Wi-Fi turned off half the time and probably under office workload scenario (word proccessing, presentations, spreadsheets etc.). I believe this model is aimed at people who travel and work a lot and need a good portable, endurable laptop with good multimedia abilities. My point is that office scenario is quite realistic for business people and therefore those battery life claims could be true (or very very close to 15 hours) for weakest conifugrations so you should consider that in your future ultrabook reviews :). Anyway, keep up the good work, I see that you're just started this channel, I subscribed :)
Dude..one of the best review for a window laptop.. if i wasn't invested in apple ego system i probably would have purchase the Dell XPS 13 just by your review..hope to see more awesome video review..Thanks
The Cover on the bottom with the screw holes is basically for for looks. How you ask? Well.... Dell wanted to hide the screws and the Service tag information along with all that writing so you dont have to see it unless you want to.
Hey Dave, watching your old videos are quite interesting, find it difficult to choose between the Dell XPS 13 or the Macbook Air 13 inch (2017, what are your suggestions that's if you're reading this of course :)
For Windows, to get maximum juice, try to use modern apps as much as possible & turn off background Desktop apps (including Desktop itself). There's many option modern IE for web browsing, tubecast (worked yt client for now) or modern IE for youtubing, gom player for movies, etc, even online ms office for light doc editing.. For me, chrome is the most battery hog, not much CPU usage, but definitely take too much juice. Turn off any radio (bt, wifi etc) not really too much impact. This setup can be usable when away from wall, but when the charger attach, do whatever you want to do
hmm good observation! i actually just noticed that this morning. The scaling on the 3200x1800 version looks a little fuzzy. Might have to make a video about that. I wonder if that's a video driver thing? the OS? or the screen itself?
Yeah I don't know what the story is. I do know that for applications that end up looking fuzzy on super high res monitors you can right click on the programs shortcut, go to properties and check "disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and things tend to look a lot sharper, but generally really small.
Some owners have reported that the screen's brightness changes automatically when the light of the room changes, and that they can't adjust it by settings. Did you see anything like that?
I think there's an option to turn off the light sensor under the power adjustment settings. I had that issue with my Samsung laptop. It would adjust the screen brightness based on how bright the room is.
Did you notice any backlight bleeding on the edge of the screen on your unit? I just purchased one recently and it seems pretty severe. Also, there are touchpad settings to reverse the scroll direction and turn off tap to click. It was probably included in a later Windows update.
Some advice. You don't have to put in so many moving shots. Its ok to have some static shots in there. Keep it up though!
Thanks for the tip! I'll keep it in mind for future vids!
I liked it! :)
Do you know how the graphics for this sort of channel are done?
After effects

you're becoming one of the best reviewers

looks suicidal in this video, surprised he's still around.
no

your videos have amazing production quality! i saw this laptop in the windows store in california and i had to read about it
Great review man! Subscribed! Waiting for my unit to arrive hopefully soon.

Internet from a teacup? Lol. Perfect description.
Great review. You have good audio quality and great camera angles for what you display. Please review the HP Spectre x360 next
It's pretty important to state which browser you used for your tests. Chrome is a massive resource hog and tends to leak memory, which drains your battery like mad.
Agreed, my battery life is horrible when using Chrome. What are some good alternatives?
Agreed! Chrome drains battery. I've gone back to IE, which to be fair, with version 11 is a good browser now. Do I miss AdBlock Plus? Not really, I use an ad-block hosts file which does well enough. I do still use Chrome, sometimes, but not missing it.
+Eric Yep it does. IE works perfectly with it. Cant believe I would be using IE again on day.
I like the audio test you did, much better than when people just giving numbers, at least you have sone kind of comparison

If Dell makes a 15" screen in a 13" body my wallet is yours.
I'd be all over that as well
Well, your wallet is gone I guess..
Great vid, very professional on the review. Subscribed!
Ha u remind me of one of my friends back in high school. Used to head to PC cafe and play counterstrike or StarCraft bw all the time.
Hope to see more vids from ya and good luck.
Enjoyed your review. Do you think I should get with or without touchscreen?
I received the touchscreen version a day after i filmed the review but it's not my cup of tea. It looks gorgeous up close but at regular viewing distances I find them similar. Color rendition on the high-res version looks a little better though. I'm also not a touch screen notebook person. Too much arm lifting and I'm kinda lazy like that. Games are unplayable at high-res (same video card). But.. If you're a regular touch screen notebook user, and you don't play games AND you don't mind taking a 15-20% battery life hit, then go for it!
***** So it's only the touchscreen version that games are unplayable at high-res on?
vintage D2D :)
Just saying almost EVERY company advertise the battery this way. But 9 hours in reality is already a quite outstanding result on the market.
Wow, Apple is being so honest!
Hi, dave, I love your reviews. For the screen thing, I found a setting in BIOS "unobstrusive mode", which allows to press Fn + F7 to turn down all the lights, including the keyboard light, power button, screen, charging indicator ~ I found that nice if you just want to turn off the display without sleeping it
I subscribe to a lot of tech reviews, you're good man, hope to see more vids in the future
by far the best video on ur channel love your work
Dave, you’re the man 🙌🏼🙌🏼
The plate on the bottom is for covering these codes and partnumbers, so Dell has not to put them on the outside of the bottom plate where everyone can see them and where they are covering the brilliant Aluminium.
this laptop this one of the best laptop in market rn and I haven't notice any problems with this laptop.I have played GTA 5, crysis3 and more and I didn't get hot at all and fan is fucking quite .its way better than Mac book
What is the performance like in those games??
Notebookreviews said that the hatch is just...there. It's a design carried over from previous generations of XPS ultrabooks.
btw the touchpad settings are built into the OS. Microsoft designed the trackpad, so that's why there aren't any drivers. Go into settings>PCs&Devices>Mouse & Touchpad
Touchpad still isn't great, not very precise when having to click on two small objects close together, the mouse pointer just seems stuck..
wow good find! My entire office couldn't figure this out hah. I've added a pop up in the video to reflect this bit of info. Thanks Tyler
Great review! I'm eyeing the new XPS 13. Any plan to do that soon? Torn between that and the new Zenbook 305CA. A fanless notebook sounds great, but performance is definitely an issue. Would love your feedback
love your review! covered all the aspects i care about! thank you so much :D
Great video, you'll get better and better and improvements will show. Keep up the good work and don't give up
Thank you Dave. Thanks to your review and some of my friends opinions, I am going with the XPS 13. I'm not too tech savvy so I rely on guys like you for the help. Thank you. Quick question. Will this laptop be good for simple video editing. Family stuff, vacations, etc. Just for fun.
Don Tyler it'd be a great option for what you've listed
you got a lot more subs since this video, will you scrape the carbon fiber to check if it real?
You can use an polarized filter on the lens to show texture.
And you should definitely have way more viewers, you are doing a great job.
Cheers
Dave, how do you like the trackpad in comparsion to Apple who got it absolutely right.
As for battery life, do you really need 15hrs? Usually most people sit 4-5 hours, 15? When do you sleep and live? lol
Not an attack just a playful one.
Great review. Earned a sub!
Maybe now you can do stuff to the carbon fibre or whatevs.
I do play dota but I'm horrible at it. I'll test it out shortly and let you know
***** Thanks!
No success? Hope I'm not bothering you too much, just very curious.
just got off work, installing it in a bit. i'll keep you posted.
freddefripp k. 50-55fps. Everything turned down. I don't know if you need graphics turned up to play at a competitive level though. GL with it
Thank you for reviewing the Xps 13!
The hatch is so you don't rub of the serial, model & OS codes. Its happened to me in the past.
Dude..one of the best review for a window laptop.. if i wasn't invested in apple ego system i probably would have purchase the Dell XPS 13 just by your review..hope to see more awesome video review..Thanks
Great review Dave! You got yourself a sub
Please review that XPS 15 Dave. Your videos are great!
I love ur reviews man, very helpful
The Cover on the bottom with the screw holes is basically for for looks. How you ask? Well.... Dell wanted to hide the screws and the Service tag information along with all that writing so you dont have to see it unless you want to.
hmm very possible!
***** no not possible it's why.
Hey Dave, watching your old videos are quite interesting, find it difficult to choose between the Dell XPS 13 or the Macbook Air 13 inch (2017, what are your suggestions that's if you're reading this of course :)
nearly 6 years ago and already 4k
professionals have standards.
This setup can be usable when away from wall, but when the charger attach, do whatever you want to do
nice video! love them and keep up the good work! i hope u dont mind me asking but how old are you?
Very nice! Personally I'd rock the 1080P screen. Windows doesn't do the best job at scaling desktop apps.
hmm good observation! i actually just noticed that this morning.
Hmm. i'm not having that issue. I can manually adjust it after automatic adjustments
