Do we have different definitions of "freezing"? You are talking about how to shut a computer down and prevent suspending it and one sign of having a virus. But that is not what Freezing means, right? Freezing is when user input is no longer accepted. Sometimes audio keeps playing and sometimes (a lot rarer) the video output also keeps running, but you can no longer actually do things. Imagine a program freezing, but for the whole computer. With that title I was expecting a trick to limit how much of your cpu, gpu and ram a program is allowed to use, so that issues in one program don't block the rest of your computer.
Chris, dude! DISABLE: FAST STARTUP and HYBRID SLEEP in Windows! It's the first thing to do!

I had issues with Debian based Linux distros freezing. I loved Linux mint but it always froze on my newer machine. It took me a year of reading forums to work out what the issue was. I had my PC connected to an Ethernet port but my PC also had a WIFI card. I never used the WIFI but apparently if you don't switch it off on Debian based distros it causes random kernal panics. After reading that I immediately installed Mint, disabled the WIFI through the OS and never had an issue since. Hope that helps someone.

how come in power options advanced settings when I change it to high performance it wont work and it just stays in power saver mode?
Hello, could you please help me with something? I downloaded a .zip file, and now, not only can I not delete it, (file explorer freezes and can't close exept by shut downs whenever I try), it freezes when I try to take screenshots, and when I try to reboot my machine, it takes 2 tries. First it brings up a black screen after I signin, and the second time it works. Could you please help me?

Disabling windows "fast startup" is usually a good recommendation aswel. This fixes a whole load of problems down the line.

idk my pc seems literally frozen when I turn it on everything seems fine fans on lights on but when I turn it off or on my keyboard and mouse are on but won’t respond like they are frozen and the display won’t show. I tried staying up until 5hours if it just restarting but nothing fixed so far .. anyone have any solution other then replacing something because everything is functioning but somewhat not responding

I cannot use my start menu, action center, photos, music, edge, windows store, windows defender. Scanned it for virus with Malwarebytes but it was all clean. Used some tweaks I found on the Microsoft website, none of them worked. Any help will be appreciated.
Also disable fast startup in Windows 8+ or select restart if you're experiencing issues
@Syeda Afeera maryam Control Panel (-> System and security) -> Power options -> [Left panel] Choose what power buttons do -> [UAC] Change settings, which are not available -> [Uncheck] Turn on fast startup (recommended)
To access control panel in Windows 10, press Windows + R, type "control", press Enter or click OK

I got a new ssd and i installed windows on it it worked but when i opened it back after it was shutdown with the button it was stuck verifying dmi pool data so i tried reinstalling windows and it is still stuck on dmi pool data but the pc can boot off other drives and i can still access the files on the ssd how do i fix it so i can boot from it

at 9:20 isn't your ram speed a little low? or is that due to the VM? (should be closer to 16 to 24 GB per seconds on DDR4 2400 MHz right?)
Hello Chris if you have a SSD drive that shows some bad sectors could this drive be used just for storing say music and software you download. or should you not use it at all

Hello. I am playing call of duty 4 moderm warfare, randomly it is not responding after 20 mins of playing, then i must manually to shut down laptop and to start it again, somethimes after 1 hour. I am playing on laptop. My FPS is good, it is not going under 55 FPS, my processor usage is okay, usage of RAM memory is okay, only my gpu is going on 97% usage, btw it is gpu from laptop, integrated but it has enough VRAM. Any help with that..?
Hi Chris and all the smart people out here, I am looking at moving from Windows 10 to Linux. I have a decent i5 based AIO with NVIDIA card and 8GB ram. I usually use my system to write research papers, run Python programs in ML and NLP domain with moderate data sizes (rarely over 80 GB). I sometimes play Age of Empire HD II, but can give that up as I have 5 systems with me and all are running Windows 10. And surfing the internet. I was looking for a stable and reliable Linux version. The only experience of working on Linux was between 1996-2000 on Red hat. So practically zero now.
What would be your advice about the choice of distro and environment? What software should I be looking at other than Anaconda and Firefox? Thanks in advance.

I had a hdd that was broken The more it got used, the slower and more corrupt it became. Had a peak read at 23MB/s for 2 seconds. Luckily I was able to clone at the block level to an SSD and recover the files.
Hi! .. I have recently reformatted my main PC from Windows 10 to Mint 20 (XFCE) and so far, its so smooth but, I am using a TV with HDMI as my monitor and if I just set it to my native TV resolution, it has weird display issues. if I use 1080p res, my TV overscans it and i cant see my panels. My TV doesn't have settings for adjusting overscans so, I dug in more to the settings and saw Desktop Settings and there's a Window Manager option and it's currently set to XFWM + Composting, I tried to change it to XFWM + Compton and it fixed my problem, I can now use my native res with my monitor without issues. But, is it okay to use that setting permanently? are there some bad things gonna happen to it in the long run? I am a bit new to Linux... :)

Nope their just different tools to get the same job done and the reason u got those choices is that some of them seem to not work too great with certain configurations(like it was in your case)... u got no worries there compton is a pretty reliable new gen compositor.

My friends PC is freezing when he opens some applications, or just has it on desktop for too long. The pc then freezes on most applications, except for microsoft store, and other basic applications. Any ideas on what it is? He just installed new MOBO and Ram sticks and his pc worked fine before.

is it safe that my cpu (a8-7650k oc'd to 4.9ghz 1.46v) is reading 50-60 degrees celsius on liquid in coretemp and most temperature monitoring software but when i check in hwinfo it saids package is at 106+ degrees and i dont have any problems and its been like this for 2 years. Arch linux saids the temp is absolute 0 in kelvin so i think it might be dying,
Anything above 80C is a valid reason for concern...for me personally it better always stay under 50C with normal usage cases or I call it cooling deficient system and advise exchanging it for another better cooling system.
@@grraf1 it's fully liquid cooled , custom loop , 2 240 rads a pump and the block for fm2+ water temp doesn't exceed 70-80°c so I don't know I feel like my CPUs thermometer is gone

I once had a system that froze after exactly 1 hour of being turned on. It turned out to be a bug in the SSD firmware. Updating it fixed the issue (sadly, years after I got rid of most of this PC because I couldn't find what caused it).
Now I always make sure to update my SSDs.
My computer did freeze same time every day around 11.00 ... Windows 10 and Microsoft are a bunch dumb people .it has been like 25 years since windows 95 and they still at this crap

I have tried most options, nothing much has helped my laptop because its an i5 2 cores 2016 model. It power limit throttles, no way to fix the power limits since they are locked, games dont run well at all. everything slows down when its power limit throttling, and yea there is nothing much i can do from my side to handle this problem
In this 2,3 weeks i will be getting an ssd, changing the thermal paste and this should help my system out in some way. But like i said, i just pray that the power limit throttling gets solved, otherwise it doesnt make any kind of sense for me to keep upgrading this system. Can you give me an idea regarding which ssd to buy? What do i need to check when buying an ssd?
Look up your specific laptop's user guide. You will find there specific hardware components and it will help you in finding if you have an upgrade path available. When it comes to an SSD to upgrade performance in your old laptop, buy a SATA SSD. Also upgrading RAM in dual channel configuration can boost your performance.

The AMD Ryzen Bios settings help me in Linux. Tool forever to figure out this one. C_states and power supply helped me. Gigabyte denies an issue with the b450 auros wifi pro with a 3600X. AMD support was awesome helping out with this one and another RUclipsr. After every bios upgrade I need to check these settings as they do not keep. Thanks for the video.

When cleaning the computer, clean all connectors on the board, especially the memory banks and other slots.Dust is a more common reason for failures than you might think.

@@fred-youtube Use contact cleaner!! From my own experience it's way faster, more effective for hard reaching/smaller places such as memory slots contacts or you just put your board in a ultrasonic cleaner filled with 99% IPA.

I learned the "hard" way that, at 6:34 when Chris says "You want to be outside your operating system so you can do proper testing of your hardware", it DOES technically mean any livecd OS you can get your hands on, or a reinstall of the OS on another disk, is a valid "hardware test". HOWEVER!!! For pre built PCs coming from an OEM (Dell, HP, etc), you absolutely, definitively NEED to produce the issue **on the operating system the OEM provided** to get your warranty claim as valid/recognized. Let me rephrase: not any vanilla Windows, but the OEM's distribution of Windows for your model.
While any OS is the logical way to go for hardware test, you need to go the OEM's route if you want to claim a warranty.

Yeah up to the point where he comes running back to you/some shop to retrieve hes precious data from hes unbootable&unfixable windows partitions... LOL
In linux you can do one more thing,
Go in disks -> select hdd-> enable write cache mode
It will use cache inside HDD(32-64mb based on rpm of hdd).
Windows do this by default
Just know that by doing this you pick up performance, but at the cost of reliability. If you have a power interruption and your PC unexpectedly shuts down you might lose some data.
The first setting I turn off on a new OS as we get a tons of mini power outages in my area(ranging from 2seconds to a couple of minutes(may be enough for the ups to handle or it may not(its got my back for about 5minutes)) and since i'm not always around to power down my system when such events occur id rather not gamble with data&OS integrity.
Also among the first commands I run is sudo tune2fs -c 1 /dev/sdaX (X being the exact partition where yr OS resides so its a basic integrity check at OS start up)
Literally one of the bigist reasons i canned windows from all PCs i deal with is the almost complete lack of resilience to power outages(the old Fat32 days before NTFS came around were simply PTSD inducing)
Not sure if its down to my luck or what but i also steer clear of BTRFS as the one partition i once had it on(installed another linux OS i was experimenting with at that time on it) got corrupted after a power outage(i had the BTRFS's option to restore the system to an earlier date but my trust for it at that point was already out the window)...long story short if i can't have my ext4 up and running for my OS's partition I place no trust in the reliability of that particular system.

I don't know how my pc just randomly show no signal randomly at any time and shuts off after 5 seconds but all the fans still are running. My drives are running fine and all but still.. it's agonising HELP
Likely a GPU issue, yr graphics card is either overheating or its just about ready to die on you....alternatively it may also be a power supply issue but its less likely withe the exact behavior u are describing...
Something that wasn't mentioned is that it can be useful to check the Windows Reliability Monitor when you're experiencing freezing. If you notice a pattern that the same error is occurring right before your system freezes up, that can obviously be a major clue as to what's causing it.
1usmus suggests setting that as low current idle and c-states on when running his power plan. Plus a few other things i cant remember off the top of my head.
My BIOS settings do Not Show up
Nearly all my machines I shut down and wake on lan as ssd boot is so fast these days. Although I have raspberry pIe's that have uptime of over a year.
AMD fix helped me. Sometimes my system gets put into sleep mode and I experience a freeze upon waking. That setting got turned back on when I did a CMOS restore when I was experimenting with over clocking.
My freezes randomly and then comes too after a few minutes; In game or just in chrome. I was having the hardest time finding it and then i realized it was whenever i plugged my external hard drive. Windows forgot how to deal with them apparently there so old.
not my whole computer froze, its just i was playing a game and then it suddenly froze, that was 3 days ago, guess what? it is still freezing..so how do i fix that? :(

Any system but mine, it seems. Those AMD BIOS settings aren't available on my gigabyte motherboards. Freezing has been going on a couple weeks, getting quite bad now. System is less than 2 years old. Tried booting from a flash drive to make sure it wasn't any of my software. No change. Next on the list is swapping whatever components I can with a friend. At the moment, I'm calling it my £700 paperweight as that's about all its good for. I can get about 6 hours of local video playback per day if I don't leave it idling too long, so that's something I guess.
Had a freezing issue six months ago. After reinstalling the OS (Manjaro) didn't work I found that re-seating the ram sticks (2X8GB) cleared up the issues.

SUPERCHAT about Ramdrive
My games are small-ish, and dont take much memory. I can copy games from disk to a 10-16gb RAMDRIVE while I grab a drink/snacks,
still leaving plenty of Free ram for playing game & OS. Software ramdrives for ddr3 mobo (fx8350 etc) are way faster than sata ssd, and cheaper than replacing Cpu & Mobo & Ram to get a NVME drive. Explicitly with SWAPOFF and 16gb Ramdrive, a 32gb pc running Mint20 can still play non-AAA games (Kerbal Space) just fine without OutOfMem problems for the 16gb available mem.
Question : Have you considered Ramdrive as something FREE to help older 8thread computers that got plenty of ram (32+) but CANT nvme?
So I use both windows and linux. Mint and others runs really well on my desktop, but it makes my slim and light laptop heat up and lose battery quite aggressively, it got better kernel 5.4+ but still it's not as optimized as running windows in my laptop. And did I mention that my laptop is at times super smooth and other times stuttery in when it window comes to animation? Any solution? i would love to parmenantly switch to linux on my laptop. It's a Ryzen machine btw.

2.As mentioned before, it's AMD, Ryzen 5 mobile to be exact, second gen. 2500u.
I don't use the laptop for any gaming, just browsing the web with couple tabs open and switching between apps like mails clients and libre office. Always have enough ram free out of the 8 gigs.
I don't even edit video or use gimp on my laptop, I have a separate gaming machine for that purpose. I think it has something to do with the kernel, cause with each major kernel update I get massive and noticeable gains in stability, heating and power management to the point last time it was usable with linux mint 20. Before that it just randomly freeze and the only solution was force reboot, and it's not just me other ryzen mobile users faced similar issues, I read it on arch forums, I guess.
Computer: the only known substance that freezes when it overheats.
BTW, there's a completely free alternative to Parted Magic: GParted Live. Along with CloneZilla and System Rescue CD, it can even be run from a PXE server.
These aren't alternatives, partedmagic is a bootable distro that contains a plethora of utilities to diagnose/partition/clone drives
@@ChristopherGray00 Those are all live (USB/CD/PXE) distros that contain a plethora (a "¡Three Amigos!" reference?) of utilities to diagnose/partition/clone drives. They all also offer the Memtest86+ memory test utility. In case of System Rescue CD, the diagnostic aspect extends way beyond that. And they are all free.
In Manjaro Linux, my system freezes when I leave any browser open for too long. If I forget to close the browser, the system will lockup in about two hours. With the browser closed, it will run for weeks without needing to reboot. Honestly, kernel updates are the only reason I ever have reboot my system.
This is happening to me too. Just installed manjaro, 10 minutes on we browser it freezes
I have had a computer start to freeze when going into a game not even playing it, this was only after a Windows Update. It is also worth noting outdated software can cause problems so it is worth updating software encase that is an issue causing a freeze.

Is it a high pitch noise? It could be a high frequency (say, above 14-15 kHz) noise that us old-timers can't hear any longer which found its way to sneak into the video.

My box started freezing and on re-boot AVG free would never load and lock everything up! got it in safe mode and uninstalled the AVG! AVG blocked me on full boot. Then all the issues ceased. Replaced AVG with Avast and all is good now! BTW (windows 7)
never have i ever heard anyone recommend turning off your pc. i used to do that until that day my proc burned out from powering up over and over again.
