In this review I talk about the history of the 264 Win Mag, when it came out in the Winchester Model 70 Westerner. I also compare it to cartridges such as the 7mm Remington Magnum and Hornady's 6.5 PRC.

I have taken Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail, Pronghorn, and sheep with it + many coyotes! Great long range varmint calling gun. The 1st Antelope I shot with it, I had 120 Grain Nosler Solid Base Bullets @ 3,378 FPS. Shot him right behind front shoulder center line. I remember pulling the trigger and seeing the hollow hair explode. The bullet made a softball size hole thru him. I still keep the photos to show the kill results. I have never had to shoot an animal more than once.

🤠 The Name "Westerner" and the Cartridge is An Indication of the Type of Shots That You Can Expect Out West! 🗻 It Certainly is a Good Western Mule Deer Cartridge! 🦌

Imagine if someone took the 264 Win mag and applied the same cartridge design as 6.5 Creed and 6.5PRC: shallow seating depth to allow for maximum case capacity, match rifle chambers and a 1-8 twist. It would be the next new hotness.

have had a .264 for 45 yrs. have killed counless deer Elk and Antelope . Not a finer cartridge on the planet.

I owned several 264 Win Mags and have made the same barrel when I worked for Bill Wiseman. The 264 a win Mag like very slow propellants. Notice Nosler did not load US869. When paired with a 26” barrel, Fed 215, and WW Brass you can hit 3,200. What is cool about the 1-9 is that it will shoot 100 grain bullets at 3,600 FPS. Awesome on a Prairie Dog. Have to take cleaning rods and cooling cycles to extend barrel life. My favorite is a 120 Nosler Ballastic Tip at 3,350. Spectacular on Deer, Antelope, & Sheep. My rifle has a Wiseman barrel with a longer throat. Rilfe shoots the 120’s around .190” 5 shot avg groups.

I've hunted with a 264 win mag for many years . Killed a lot of dear and other types . On paper it still out preforms many of the modern day 6.5 class. I've shot it next to 300 win mag . There is not a lot of bullet options for the 264 but the win ammo is a great bullet by Serria that is VERY accurate and great knockdown power and is VERY accurate out to LONG DISTANCE!!!!

I have taken mule deer at over 600 yards with my 264 it was made in 1963 it was the first one sold In Artesia NM the guy I got it from bought it new and it still shoots through the same hole at a 100 yards

7mm rem mag is literally a 264 win mag necked up to 7mm and what killed the 264 wm is more versatility in grain weights for the 7mm and getting pretty much the same velocities with the 7mm rem mag in heavier bullets hitting target with more energy its hard to beat the 7mm rem mag but theres nothin wrong with the 264 wm id say it was way ahead of its time

Noslers realizing data for the 264 is trash. They haven’t updated in years. They don’t use any powder like Retumbo, RE26, N570, H1000. I can easily get 3250fos with 140 class bullets and Retumbo. Which compared to 7mm 140s is a much higher bc bullet.

I have always wanted a Winchester Model 70, and I recently found an opportunity to pick one up. The fact that it was in .264 Win Mag was just the icing on the cake! I get the rifle I wanted and a get one hell of an underrated and nostalgic caliber. I can’t wait until it arrives. Thank you for doing this video!! There’s not enough info out there for this round.

Love all the vids so close together. Good stuff bro !! 264 was a beast. To bad it never took off more It’s a shame

My love of the 264wm started with two Uncle's discussing a rifle my Grandfather built for one of them. I found a Pre-64 Westerner a few years later for sale at a gunshop where I was attending JR College. I've used that 264wm with everything from 85g Sierra HP at ridiculous speeds to a 140 Nosler Accubond to take a cow elk. I've used the 120g Barnes TSX at 3200 fps to harvest a cow elk and a buck antelope. Neither went far from where they were standing at the shot, the antelope dropped, the cow elk made it 30 yards or so.

Had a 264 since early 60's, and finally gave it to my son. He loves it as much as I do, so to fast forward to present day, I just received a MGM TC Encore barrel for myself. Figgered I started with a 264, I'll end with one. New barrel is 27" 1in 8 twist. Haven't got to shoot it yet, but I'm really excited to see what it will do. Back in the day, I had no chrono, and the powders were much limited compared to now. The slow burners oughta turn in some pretty good numbers, so I can't wait. BTW, as a side note, I reloaded a long time with surplus powder ($1.45 a lb), mag primers (.69/100 on sale), bullets (mostly Speer @ $5/100), my cases. Cost around $1.40/box. I still have a few of the old packages to prove it, but even then as a teenager, I couldn't shoot as much as I would have liked. Factory ammo could be found $4 to $5 back then, lotta money for a kid. (hamburgers were 15 cents). Sorry to ramble, loved the video.

It intrigues me how so many of the new “hot” popular cartridges are merely emulating the ballistics of lesser known older cartridges. Two of my favourites are disappearing from the recognition they deserve, the 6mm Remington and the 257 Roberts.

I have a Model 70 in 264 made in 1959 one of the first, I bought this gun with an extra barrel years ago and never paid any attention to the rifle,it just sat in a safe. I did take it out last year and with factory ammo Hornady outfitter and cheap PPU 140 grain bullets, to my surprise they both shot exactly the same, the shots centered in the bullseye and both measured .60 sub MOA. I then thought probably this rifle was never cleaned properly and I inspected the barrel with a bore scope. WOW the throat of this rifle looked totally destroyed it was completely cracked and distorted. I thought about replacing the barrel however I decided to aggressively scrub the barrel with remington 40x carbon solvent. This took several hours when patch after patch of black carbon was removed from the barrel. A subsequent inspection with the borescope revealed what looked like a brand-new barrel. This exercise might help someone else one day that is why I shared this event.Cheers

I have my uncles .264 that he got when they first came out, not only did he use it for deer here on the Texas gulf coast but he hand loaded a lot of the lighter weight slugs for a screaming fast varmint load

  • @user-so2vs2bh2f

One of the most underrated cartridges ever. Has the power with the right bullets and shot placement to handle I would say about anything, if not anything in North America, some would say its underkill for grizzlies, however if a 270 Winchester can kill a grizzly, then a 264 win mag can! Especially with that 160 grain Woodleigh Weldcore with 3,240 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy.

I have a .264 wm in a Winchester model 70 extreme weather. I bought it as I always wanted one. It has become one of my favorite rifles. It does everything all the other 6.5’s do, but better with the exception of the heavy bullets - which I don’t shoot anyway. I load a 117 gr Hammer bullet, running at 3200 fps. Fast, accurate, and excellent on deer and antelope. A barrel burner? If you abuse any cartridge by continuous firing, it’ll ruin a barrel. I never fire more than 5 shot on any rifle I own. For a hunting rifle, I’ll never burn this one out.

I bought a Remington 700 CDL in .264 Magnum about 17 years ago. Using 140 gr. Remington Corelokts, i got 9/16" groups at 100 yds. I also had a .270 with me and a 30/06. Had all sighted in. Took a lunch break, when all of a sudden the wind started blowing. Cold front was coming in. My cousin had the idea of shooting in this gusty wind just to see how it would affect bullet impact. I was stunned that the .264 was very little affected, maybe sn inch group. The .270 and 30/06 went from 1-1/4" groups to over 2-1/2". I was amazed. The 06 was firing 150 gr Fail Safes and .270 was firing 130 gr. Corelokts.
