Great video Jake. I like the comments about using legacy glass, which I'm experimenting with for portraits. The only thing I'd add to the review is that finding this focal length with F1.7 in legacy glass might be a challenge so for low light portraits this might be a good option. If you can live with 50mm then you can get MUCH faster legacy glass at low costs, but they do tend to be soft full open. It sounded like this was fairly sharp fully open. Keep up the good work!
Very true! I tend to use around 50mm on a speedbooster and its not enough sometimes, but if I just use a passive adapter I’m getting around 100mm full frame equivalent which is perfect most times!! Most of them are soft like you mention, but that’s what I like about them since it smooths out the imperfections on the skin 😂😂😂 thanks for watching!
great video, have to say... i really love the background behind you, the colours and the setup are really cool. The reason it makes the AF noise when you turn the manual focus ring is that the ring is telling the motor to move the elements in the lens (focus by wire, as you mentioned) So it is exactly the same process as if the camera was doing the focusing, hence you get exactly the same noise.
Jake McHugh yep i think i will be picking one up as a stills lens to see if it is worth getting the longer focal length. If i like it then i might spend more on a better one down the road. For 80 bucs though its worth it to try it.
I was thinking that Yongno’s 42.5 f/1.7 and Xiaoyi’s 42.5 f/1.8 which is better for me. Which I only take photos most of the time. Guess I get the answer now tho.
I believe the shutter sound come from your 'shutter type' is set to AUTO. As much as I find your video is clean and well connected. Its lack of real picture/video reviewed the whole point of video is gone.
My shutter type was set to MSHTR or Mechanical shutter which I understand makes a louder shutter sound compare to the other options on the camera, but I still found it to be louder when compared other lenses that I use most of the time. Like I mentioned in the video I just think it's due to the cheaper build of this lens being a mostly plastic build it won't cover the sound up as much of a lens thats built nicer! I'm sorry you found that I didn't provided enough of real life examples of pictures or videos. I hope some of the other videos on this lens are able to give you a better example of how this lens looks. What kind of examples would you like to see in future videos??
Oh sweet! I know Viltrox has some lenses for the X Mount as well that seem to be a good budget alternative. Which Fuji are you shooting on? I like the lineup of cameras that they have to offer. Would love to try one someday. Thanks for watching!
Since they are joining the MFT alliance now I hope they will make a few more models that are a little better. Yongnuo has done good with canon and nikon clones before
I agree! I'm glad that MFT is getting some love from third party manufacturers still. I hope we could get a cool 35mm full frame equivalent prime from them in the future. Thanks for watching!
you mention that the lens is noisy when autofocusing and Manual focusing, actually, it is not the autofocus that creates the noise, its the aperture, it tries to adjust to the light so you can get good exposure on the screen even if it was set open on f1.7,, try to observe it..
Sounds a lot more noticeable. Probably won't recommend it in a quiet place. xD I don't have a prime lens. I think I should get one. Don't have big cash for the more premium lenses by Panasonic or Olympus.
@@JakeMcHugh I used to only take photos of the fields and mountains (still working on that). But I want to get into portraits. So, I think this one you've reviewed would be a good starter one. I have an Olympus 14-42 Kit Lens (the non-pancake version) and the Olympus 45-150 Lens. Honestly have no idea how to use them properly. But I find the kit lens easier to use for general purpose. The 45-150 is better if I want to take a far away photo.
If you want a lens strictly to use just for shooting portrait photos then this lens would fit the bill at the lower price. I also would recommend trying out your two zooms that you have now to shoot some portraits and when reviewing the photos afterwards you can look at the metadata in your photo editor and see what focal length you used or liked the best and then find a prime around that focal length! I hope this helps!
I can’t answer that for you fully. What may work for me may differ for you. I think this isn’t a bad lens for the price if you do just photos, but for me I prefer just using a vintage lens on a speedbooster. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
I have both of them and I have to say that xiaoyi is better if you don't wanna heard something so noise. But unfortunately you will lost AF ring and metal mount when choose xiaoyi.
That’s what I think too. If you’re on a tight budget and want a lens for portrait photography then I say it’s good enough, but for my personally use which is more video centric I prefer other options. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video 😮!
I’ve seen this lens of Amazon and wondered how good it was. Thanks for your review.
No problem! Thanks for watching!

Thanks Derec! And yeah you’re exactly correct! Too bad it can be noisy, but for the price it can be expected

I am thinking too, check this out.

Was planning on getting this before but I already own the Voigtlander 25mm f0.95. Maybe next time, I can go for this too!
Oh yeah gotcha! I have heard nice things about the Voigtlander. How do you like it?
Is this the only version or is there really a mark ii?
Thank you
I happen to be comparing these two lenses
Awesome! I’m glad I could help out! Thanks for watching!
Amazing... soon Fuji X mount should be available.

Nice!!!! What area?!

Nice! My girlfriend lives not too far from there! I’m from the Appleton area!
Sounds like it's connecting to the internet in the 90's.
It really does 😂 thanks for watching!!

Do you happen to know if the Yi 42.5 also has the loud auto focus noise?
Unfortunately I do not as I haven’t tried that lens before. Thanks for watching anyways!

@@Hayatovn hello which is better the yongnuo or the Xiaomi? I don't know which one to buy? thanks
I think the plastic body of the lens becomes a resonator for the shutter sound.
I understand is not a lens to buy

@@JakeMcHugh So better buy manual focus lens, so all the money goes to the glasses if want go after cheap lenses,
Merry Christmas and happy new year
I just get 2 copy of this lens from aliexpress and it sooo noise when i change aperture. Anyone has same problem?
I noticed this with my copy as well. I also noticed it was noisy when taking photos like shown in the video. Thanks for watching!
Must be good because it's $138 now.
I want a Sigma 16mm 1.4 clone lens sub 150$
That would be awesome if something like that came out! I would buy it in a hurry. Thanks for watching!
