I went for the 25mm on a hunch because it was comparatively very cheap on Amazon. It's on my gx9 about 60% of the time, 35% being the 100-300 and the rest of my lenses sharing the rest. It is just very very good
I’m very much a budget photographer. I have a G2 bought 2011, and a G80 bought 2019. Lenses are the kit 14-45mm, the 45-200mm and my favourite 12-60mm. Your video identifies how difficult it can be to get the desired bokeh with the high aperture. I will definitely be looking for a single lens probably 15mm to get crisp exposures.
Jake Felzien yeah it’s the PERFECT Vlogging length. Had the 25mm and was too tight for me. Still learning about these lenses though but Awesome Video👍🏽
@@artjohnson01 Not Really because it depends on how ya use it. When I used a 25mm it was TOO tight no matter how far back I used it, not that same with the 35mm. Not everyone used the len's the same.
The 12-35 works for me. I also have the 15mm f1.7 brilliant walk around lens and the 45-150 mm which is sharper than my 70-300mm Nikon on my DSLRS I used that lens to do some shots in a personal book and it worked out fine 📷👍
Interesting choices. I use the G9 for video after years and years with the GH3 and GH4. Stabilization has been a real game changer for me. For doc and event work, my primary lens is the Canon 24-105L on the Speedbooster XL. This gives a 30-135mm equivalent on the G9 with f2.5 across the zoom range. It's very useful because of this reach. Even the PanaLeica 12-60 doesn't have this reach or aperture. In very low light doc or event work, I use the Sigma 18-35 on Speedbooster XL. A tiny bit of vignetting at the wide end, but otherwise fine. For controlled situations, corporate and commercial work, I use the Voigtlander primes. They have a beautiful organic look that is more like 'cinema' than any other lens I own. Stop them down to at least f1.2 or f1.4 as they have a lot of glow wide open. Stills are another matter. Olympus primes, especially the 25/1.8, 17/1.2 and 45/1.2 are amazing. Fast autofocus, beautiful rendering, its all there.

Thank you for this video. I'm new to videography aside from having shot some stuff on my smart phone earlier. I just recently got a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, but so far I haven't got any lenses for it at all. I'm not looking to become super professional, so I would like to have maybe just one or two lenses that I use for most of my shots. However, with my limited knowledge it's difficult to know which lens or lenses suit my particular needs. I'm mostly going to do overhead shots of a bench in order to document my work on camera. I will use a tripod and have the camera look down onto the bench at an angle. I don't need anything super wide, and I don't want anything that can easily create distortion. I'd like a lens that is easy to work with as a beginner. Having at least some decent focal depth would be good too. Low light capabilities is important for me, as I know I will have to take low light shots in some particular situations. Do you have any good recommendation for a MFT lens that would suit me, based on my particular use case? Will the ones you mentioned in this video still work well for me?

I would put the Olympus 40-150 ahead of the Pana and I shoot G9. The 15mm I concur and if you are going to pick Sigma, the 56mm would have been the best of the lot. Don't stayaway too long in that Full Frame world $$ :)

Completely agree with you regarding 12-35 f2.8. I can't discribe it as well, but the image from the lens was just not sexy. I still remember when I got disappointed with it.
My favorite is the 12-40mm 2.8, when I go on foreign trips or daily use I use the 12-40 most. I also take the 15mm 1.7 too. The 15mm 1.7 is a great lens I'm happy to have it so small and sharp. 😊

(bmpcc 4k, GH5s, G9, A73)
Hey Andy!!! That is awesome that you are going full time creative and videographer!! Definitely a challenging time to do it but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to get creative and outplay others stuck in their rutts ☺️ I will be making an image quality video. I wasn't planning on including the G9 in the video since 3 has been challenging but I'll think about it 😂
Jake Felzien you’re absolutely right ! I’ll keep challenging myself, thanks ! And please try to include the G9 :( otherwise it’s ok no worries ! Stay safe Jake !
@@jakefelzien i like the focal length of both but idk if the sigmas soom is worth it as it barely zooms in Ithink 🤔. But for autofocus I mainly just need the half press auto focus thing when taking pictures, (not sure what that's called) and does sigma does it?
I have a gx80 and these lenses: - 14-42 Kit (not a big fan of it tbh, as its not very sharp and plastiky) - 25mm 1.7, absolutely love it - 45-150 4-5.6, the 45-100mm range is good, from 100-150mm it does have its weaknesses. But as its affordable, its a good option for people on a budget (like me haha :D ). - Olympus 9-18mm, it was a pretty bargain (200 euros) for an ultrawide. Not fast, a bit plastiky, but its very small and therefore pairs perfectly with my gx80. It gets its job done and the Leica 8-18mm was too expensive for me. I use the 45-150 and 9-18 frequently for landscape photography and the 25mm for video. Another honorable mention would be the Sigma prime trio. Especially the 16mm f1.4 is interesting for me, but the 15mm f1.7 could be fantastic too.
Thanks for the video Jake. I bought a while ago zcam e2 which is MFT and bought two lenses 12-35mm f2.8 and 42.5 f1.7. The quality I'm getting from both lenses are excellent especially the 42.5. The 12-35 is a great lens for me with f2.8 .. but it suffer from distortion 😣. Unfortunately zcam e2 does not correct the distortion and really looking for an alternative lens .. could you suggest me one !! My concern is to get same color tone when swapping lenses
Let me think... not super familiar with the distortion issue. Can it be fixed in post in Resolve? As far as a recommend, there aren't a lot of other great options that are better than the 13-25 if you are wanting a direct replacement. But you could get like a 25 prime and a 15 prime? I love both of those lenses. Or you could go the speed booster route and adapt an EF lense with a similar FF 24-70 range. lots of options
I just ordered the Olympus OM-D EM10 III, and I am confused with the lens mount. Is micro four thirds really the name of the mount? Does it mean that I can use any company's micro four thirds lenses? Panasonic, Canon, Fuji, Leica.... No extra adapters or anything so the connection pins work with my camera? If that is the case, that's AMAZING!
I am very new to all of this. The GH5s is my very first real camera ever (my only other camera is a hero 4 black). I just got more information about the Sigma lens from you, then I have gotten from other vids recently, yet it was just an honorable mention for you that you talked about as an afterthought... my only lens right now is the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 lens. If I get the Sigma lens, I will need an adapter... right? I am leaning towards the VILTROX EF-M2 II.
Oh man so great to hear from you ☺️ Yes you’ll need an adapter and the Viltrox works great, recommend that combo for sure the results are crazy ☺️ I just wish the autofocus (or complete lack of it) was better but other than that I couldn’t recommend that combo more 🤙
YES!! I fully agree with your #1 choice..!! I actually bought this lens before I owned a M4/3 camera of my own. Small,, sharp as a lazer-edged tack and has manual f-stops. Beautiful piece of gear. I did not have the same results with my 45-150--I found it low contrast and weak edge sharpness outside of the center of the zoom and f-stop range. I did replace it with the 45-175,,which is lesser known in N. America. (popular in Asia) It appears to be a step-up in stabilization and coating,,and weirdly has a power zoom,,,which turned out to be a video bonus. Thanks for your comparisons-- and especially on the Sigma insights...enjoyed the video.
12 to 35 mm length is perfect for close up shooting I do it all the time with video work I don't know where you're coming from and fires bulka goes just stay with your full frame camera if you want Boca
Hello Jake. AWESOME VIDEO. What lens do you recommend for fashion photography. I recently bought G85. I am Confuse which lens to buy for sharp pictures??
@@m00067381 hmmmm... maybe the 25mm f1.7 would fit in that budget. im not a fashion photographer expert but i would probably go with a prime lens that fits in that budget. my favorite lens is out of your budget but the 15mm f1.7 is my all time favorite lens
Recently I saw a vid where someone used it for portrait photography. He was really impressed by the sharpness. And the seperation at 60mm with 2.8 was pretty nice. I got the Sigma 60mm 2.8 for about 100$, had to take it, nice lens too.
I found the Voigtlander F/0.95 range are the best natives to use on my bmpcc4k. Meike deserved a mention too.. Only agree with the SIgma art 18-35 being one of the best
Hmm. I have the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 for my GH5 and GX7.. slightly wider than your 25mm.. definitely smaller! 😃 Good video. Every lens has a reason! (Good, Bad & Ugly)
Just coincidentally, I have a G9. I own the 45-150. Bought it to complement my 14-42 kit lens. OF COURSE, I also have the 25mm F1.7. How anybody can NOT buy this lens at less than $150? A 50mm equivalent, and F1.7. It's very sharp, and I use it regularly. NOW...I recently decided to get the Leica 15mm. YOUR TOP THREE will be in my kit. Frankly, I'd take the 45-150 out of my top three and replace it with the 42.5mm F1.7. I really love that lens.
Hey Art Johson! Glad to see you and hear from you. I do have the 42.5 1.7 and i am curious what you use that lense for. I typically just find that i don't love it as much as I would hope. I should give it more of a try for sure, but yeah, I just typically don't use it. Stay awesome!
@@jakefelzien Hi Jake, Thanks for the reply. I'd recommend that you use that 42.5mm lens sometime when you'd otherwise use that 25mm. What happened to me was that I was at a wedding in Las Vegas and left my 25mm at home. I had the 42.5mm on the camera at a cocktail party the night before the wedding. I will say that the photos were "up close and personal", but they also were fantastic. The bokeh was beautiful, and the low light performance was fantastic. I kept the lens on the camera for the entire evening, and even for video. It's now a regular in my kit, but I just ordered the Leica 15mm. I guess that I've got that 25mm bracketed. LOL.
How anybody could not have 25mm f1.7? Me :) Since 20mm/f1.7 came as kit lens with GF1 I feel like 25mm and 17mm are too similar. And 20mm seems to match natural field of view pretty well. But I'm considering Pergear 25mm/f.7 for fun with imperfect cheap lens with manual focus.
Yes of course we google them but still the # 1 and #2 question out of the many questions we have...... is price, the how much. Just saying. Makes for a happier viewer. Not to be a jerk, but it is the reason I did no subscribe truth be told. There are hundreds and thousands of video and teachers to love.
I own 6 lenses, along with the 25mm and the 45-150 kit lens (my #3) but for me it's the 42.5 f1.7 (#2) and the sharp 35-100 f2.8 do ok. I'll only use MFT for well lit or outdoor applications where I don't want to lug around much heavier gear as I'm doing what I call casual shooting. Their weakness is in low light situations using high iso or if cropping/enlarging is intended. I chose the GX85 because small size matters,. Using a body the same size as a mirrorless full frame Z7 makes no sense to me. A high resolution full frame sensor is on a whole different level. Not fair to compare the two systems especially when shooting weddings or events. My Samsung S10 image quality isn't far from MFT, so my next smartphone upgrade may signal the end of MFT for me, as ridiculous as that would have sounded only a few years ago. Probably why Panasonic went full frame and Olympus is dying.
I totally agree Tom, it is so competitive these days. and I think MFT will always have a place, but there are people who still shoot film as well. But that is widely considered dead. I think the writing is on the wall, the market is pushing full frame, it has a lot of great advantages. Also, cannons new RF lenses are looking so small. that f4 70-200 is super intriguing for full frame users
@@jakefelzien I still shoot film on occasion to keep me on my toes and the pure love of photography. I started shooting more than 50 years ago in high school, so with a dozen vintage cameras sitting on a display shelf I can't resist the urge to use some of them. Only reason for not becoming a full time pro was because I could earn much more taking other directions. Family first. Having retired 13 years ago, I now do paying gigs to supplement my addiction to photography and keeping up with the "latest" technologies, but mostly for enjoyment. I also keeps me young. Good luck yo you.
#3 I've used that lens it sucks not sharp at all #2 17mm primes are always the best #1 15mm You have to try the 12mm f1.4 and the 42.5mm f/1.2 these areon another level
@Swiftray Aperture, ISO, and focal length are all affected when talking about full-frame equivalency. This isn't important to everyone, but as someone that shoots acress 3 sensors, it helps me get similar shots. The math gets even more interesting with active speedboosters and passive adapters that I accidentally got a minor in math!!
Pretentious photographers worry so much about bokeh and background blur. What, it's not enough when you're uploading it on Instagram and viewing them in tiny images? Or after RUclips beats the hell out of your upload and compressed your video? F/2.8 in mft is more than enough and 12-35mm will cover about 80% of your focal needs. Unless you're strictly a macro/wildlife photographer.
I agree with your choices. For me, the best lenses for photography with mft are the 15mm f1.7 and the 25mm f1.7 in my gx85. For video it is the sigma 18-35 with speedbooster on the gh5. AF sucks anyway, and the gh5 is already big enough for the sigma. And I think the extra weight helps for handheld video. But the sigma with the GX85 is a no no.
Pretty much. Although I have been loving a long lens a lot more lately. Preferences change I guess. That being said it isn’t great at most things RUclips
I sadly agree with 12-35/f2.8mm. It has some use: bad, dull winter weather and (late) evening hand-held city shots. Basically low light static scenes. If you want zoom 12-60mm kit lens is more versatile, it does not suffer from lens flare and optical quality is the same. If you want low aperture then lenses without zoom are better. 45-150 surprised me a bit, but I considered it few times despite having 45-200. But 45-200 is heavy and it basically ends somewhere at 100 or 120mm. Beyond that image is blurred and zooming further does not show more details. My favorites right now are 12-60/f3.5-5.6, 20mm/f1.7 and Oly 45mm/f1.8 ... there's nothing special about the first one, it's just super versatile. On my "considering to buy" list are 45-150, pergear 25mm/f1.8 and laowa super wide angle (8mm?).
@@jakefelzien Shit no. Peter McKinnon was never a pro. His photography is definitely good, but he never shares his secrets. Always keeps beating around the bush. Jake Felzien you’re absolutely right ! I’ll keep challenging myself, thanks ! And please try to include the G9 :( otherwise it’s ok no worries ! Stay safe Jake !
do you recommend the 25mm f1.7 or the 20mm f1.7 , or sigma 16mm f1.4 with speedbooster. i already have a 35mm T1.5 rokinon tho but need autofocus.
If you need autofocus don’t even consider anything with a speed booster.
Any of those are great. Which focal length do you need? Tight? Or wider?
@@jakefelzien i like the focal length of both but idk if the sigmas soom is worth it as it barely zooms in Ithink 🤔. But for autofocus I mainly just need the half press auto focus thing when taking pictures, (not sure what that's called) and does sigma does it?
@@Random-yz8gb assuming so. Canon EF mount? The 18-35 has the tap to focus. So probably
@@jakefelzien OK thanks if you had to choose 1, which one would u choose?
@@Random-yz8gb have only used 1 of them. So maybe the sigma?
Cool. have your nr1 on my main bmpcc 4k :)
It’s a great lens!
I have a gx80 and these lenses:
- 14-42 Kit (not a big fan of it tbh, as its not very sharp and plastiky)
- 25mm 1.7, absolutely love it
- 45-150 4-5.6, the 45-100mm range is good, from 100-150mm it does have its weaknesses.
Sounds like a super solid setup!
olympus has very very good lens, have you heard of the Co.?
Who’s Olympus?
How about the sigma 56mm for the MFT. Have you tried the 42.5 or the 45mm oly ?
I have tried the 42.5 I like it, but I don't use it as much as the others 🤙
From what you are saying you ought to look at the Olympus 1.2 17+25+40 and tbe Sigma 1.4 16+30+56
yeah those sound really interesting
I just ordered the Olympus OM-D EM10 III, and I am confused with the lens mount. Is micro four thirds really the name of the mount? Does it mean that I can use any company's micro four thirds lenses? Panasonic, Canon, Fuji, Leica.... No extra adapters or anything so the connection pins work with my camera? If that is the case, that's AMAZING!
If it's a MFT lens it should work on all MFT cameras yeah ☺️🤙
@@jakefelzien Why I didn't knew that before???? Haha. Thanks Jake. Great review too.
So you really recommend the 45-150?
If you need an affordable telephoto yeah 🤙
I am very new to all of this. The GH5s is my very first real camera ever (my only other camera is a hero 4 black). I just got more information about the Sigma lens from you, then I have gotten from other vids recently, yet it was just an honorable mention for you that you talked about as an afterthought... my only lens right now is the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 lens.
If I get the Sigma lens, I will need an adapter... right? I am leaning towards the VILTROX EF-M2 II.
Oh man so great to hear from you ☺️
Yes you’ll need an adapter and the Viltrox works great, recommend that combo for sure the results are crazy ☺️
I just wish the autofocus (or complete lack of it) was better but other than that I couldn’t recommend that combo more 🤙
@@jakefelzien Thank you!
Glad you liked! ☺️
12 to 35 mm length is perfect for close up shooting I do it all the time with video work I don't know where you're coming from and fires bulka goes just stay with your full frame camera if you want Boca
Yup totally! Staying with my full frame ☺️
Hello Jake. AWESOME VIDEO. What lens do you recommend for fashion photography. I recently bought G85. I am Confuse which lens to buy for sharp pictures??
What is your budget?
@@jakefelzien between 150$ - 250$. I would love to take amazing fashion pictures for my Instagram and RUclips channel.
@@m00067381 hmmmm... maybe the 25mm f1.7 would fit in that budget. im not a fashion photographer expert but i would probably go with a prime lens that fits in that budget. my favorite lens is out of your budget but the 15mm f1.7 is my all time favorite lens
@@jakefelzien Awesome just saw 15mm - 1.7 for under 400$. Will definitely go for one 💪
What's the 50mm f1.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 equivalent to micro four thirds lens?
There are three lenses that match those but are just half the mm measurement due to the crop factor. So like a 25 mm 12-35 mm and 35-100 mm
@@jakefelzien Thank you
my favorite is leica 1260 love zoom lenses :D
I really have been wanting to try this lens
Out of the lenses you recommended If you could have one for less but some landscape more of portraits and no video which one do you recommend?
15mm 👍
Olympus 60mm 2.8 macro is my fav lens.
oh dang! i need to get a macro and see how i like it. i would think they would be fun lenses to play with
@@jakefelzien it's insane how close up you can get to small things like insects. And it can even double as a long portrait lens
I need to try those ones out!
@@jakefelzien ... i bet you will agree after using one
What type of photography do you shoot that requires background separation?
People or isolated subjects or n nature
These still your most used?
Yeah, sold all the rest
wish you had more sample videos instead of 10 second sinppets... great vid overall though thanks for sharing!
Noted!
I thought you'd never get started!
I’m sure I didn’t. Years ago Jake never shut the hell up
What is your meaning.? I think I know what PMS is but not your talking. 🤷🏻♀️
Hmm. I have the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 for my GH5 and GX7.. slightly wider than your 25mm.. definitely smaller! 😃 Good video. Every lens has a reason! (Good, Bad & Ugly)
I’ve been so tempted with that 20mm but haven’t ever pulled the trigger
why didnt you include the 12mm 1.4 lens???
I have never used it. Would love to though☺️
Great video but how how how and why would you not mention the price anywhere. Yikes
yeah probably should have done that... i guess i could go pin a comment with them... or maybe just google them?
Yes of course we google them but still the # 1 and #2 question out of the many questions we have...... is price, the how much. Just saying. Makes for a happier viewer. Not to be a jerk, but it is the reason I did no subscribe truth be told. There are hundreds and thousands of video and teachers to love.
Olympus 75mm f1.8, the ultimate MFT lens imo.
I might have to look into that one!
#3 I've used that lens it sucks not sharp at all
#2 17mm primes are always the best
#1 15mm
You have to try the 12mm f1.4 and the 42.5mm f/1.2 these areon another level
I should try the 12mm 1.4 🤙
It seems you have not yet discovered the Sigma 16mm F1.4
I have not 😯
@@jakefelzien It might become your new favorite lens being as though it checks the boxes you are looking for..
1.7f on mft is 1.7f on full frame. This was very often shown in examples. The f of a lens isn't paired with the crop factor ...
What do you mean?
@Swiftray Aperture, ISO, and focal length are all affected when talking about full-frame equivalency. This isn't important to everyone, but as someone that shoots acress 3 sensors, it helps me get similar shots. The math gets even more interesting with active speedboosters and passive adapters that I accidentally got a minor in math!!
F2.8 isn't good enough... but your 8-18 is 2.8-4. ?
f2.8 is good enough. If i said it wasn't i was young and dumb back then. :)
I got fed up waiting for you to jump right into it after about the 5th time you told us you were gonna "go/jump/get right into it".
Well you still had another 2 or 3 to go at that point so I don’t blame you
@@jakefelzien intro monologue is completely redunadant just a tip from a viewer
Do you own any Olympus lenses??
I don’t 😱
Pretentious photographers worry so much about bokeh and background blur. What, it's not enough when you're uploading it on Instagram and viewing them in tiny images? Or after RUclips beats the hell out of your upload and compressed your video? F/2.8 in mft is more than enough and 12-35mm will cover about 80% of your focal needs. Unless you're strictly a macro/wildlife photographer.
Yup. Good job 👍
I totally agree man! the 18-35 is just beautiful!
Do you have the GH5 and the gx85?
Arent you a fan of the sigma Trinity?
Haven't ever owned or tried it ☺️
@@jakefelzien i have the 30mm 1.4 and Im about to buy the 16mm 1.4... the 30 mm is só sharp and beautiful images
@@NeroMC 16mm F1.4 is my favorite - it's huge and heavy so not the best for walking around all day - but perfect in the studio
42.5mm 1.7 ?

the compression of the video made the background really boxy
yeah youtube's compression is really frustrating :(
At least, we are sure that you don't work for Olympus...
😂
In other words. You could have an 8-18 zoom 25 prime and never need another lens in your kit
Pretty much. Although I have been loving a long lens a lot more lately. Preferences change I guess. That being said it isn’t great at most things RUclips
Good Video"
Thank you 🤙
Think you should have mentioned right away that you were reviewing ONLY Panasonic gear!
I guess so
I sadly agree with 12-35/f2.8mm.
Seems like some solid decisions 🤙
You made a whole video to say the 12-35mm was your favourite lens and now it is almost rubbish. That's weird
don't think i used the word rubbish....
have you never had your opinions change on anything once you acquire more knowledge Martin? :)
"Cinematic bokeh" once again...
Grading and focal length makes cinematic.
This is true. But also composition and focus plays into it as well
Jake Felzien exactly👍
coffee cinematic creamy bokeh ..... so saturated 😂
The best!
@@jakefelzien Shit no. Peter McKinnon was never a pro. His photography is definitely good, but he never shares his secrets. Always keeps beating around the bush.
