Hey Shane, excellent informative video that really resonated with me. Particularly the notion of being in debt to your body. I'm totally guilty of that. I've neglected my internal injuries for years. It's funny how you can look strong and healthy on the outside but structurally weak and misaligned on the inside. Personally, the instant gratification of weights and playing sports lulled me into a false sense of security that I was bulletproof and could get through the pain. What I didn't realise or was probably more reluctant to accept was that I should of focused developing myself physically more on the inside than the out. I got the sense this was what you were sorta referring to in your earlier years (2011 part of your story)
Hey Shane, thank you so much for sharing this. This is the video I needed to see today. Im about 8 months from my low point of having to stop surfing. I've been using the FAI fix programme for about 6-7 months and seeing a local physio. The programme has been great but i think I just reached that 1st high point you mentioned and had a big set back trying to push things too far. The psychology in this process is just as or even more important than the exercises. Thanks for doing what you do
Shane, you are a legend! These videos have been extremely helpful to me. I have only just been to the doctor and had X-rays. They told me I have FAI and need to see a specialist to possibly get an MRI which I will do. Good to know that there is hope for recovery without surgery! Thank you for this great info, keep up the good work!
Have you seen Eric Goodmans Foundation Training??? I am really jumping on his bandwagon... That program is really helping me find that next level like you say here.
I was diagnosed with fai through a workmans comp doctor! My claim got denied for some reason so I'm left to figure out how to treat this so I can get back to work. This vid gives me inspiration to figure this thing out bc I was very down abt this whole situation! Wish me luck!
Hi, just signed up for your Basics programme after being diagnosed with FAI along with osteitis pubis, chronic adductor tear and suspected stress fracture of pubis ramus - hopefully now healed. So plenty of work ahead! Interesting to hear about the role meditation in your journey as that's something I've been working on during the healing process. I'm a rock climber, mountaineer and back country skier, I'd be interested to hear if you've helped anyone who does those sorts of sports? All the best Peter
Yup! We've got some climbers and outdoorsy types. :-) Meditation was (and is) a HUGE part of my life (even more so these days than it was back when I made this video.) Amazing stuff! :-)
Another rock climber with FAI here! Such a frustating summer to see everyone around me heading out for the mountains! Hopefully you feel better soon, Peter. Any advise for me how to start on medication? (sitting is not really an option right now)
@@GotROM I think you can yes. Working on activating/building my glutes. But after last weeks session, i just got intense pain and stiffness in my lower back and hamstrings. Then i saw your video explaining the "handbrake" concept. Made a lot of sense that my quads are too tight. But i´m struggling with releasing/stretching them. They dont want to give in. Atleast not the right side. I have a big difference in internal/external rotation on left and right side. Always thought my back was were to look to fix my backpain, but realizing now it is coming from my hips. Was considering xray and surgery, but found your page and guess its better to try your FAI program first. I can mirror much of my own path in yours as of what you shared in this video. Only I am way behind.
What was the setback you experienced? I believe I am going through my "setback" currently, and it is pretty disheartening. Time to dial down the intensity and get back to focusing on being pain free and "recovered"
Excellent!! I love "I'm In debt "its a great and helpful visual tool for Me!! I really want to take the mindfulness and deep tissue work route vs the Dr. I think consistency and constructive rest are good too...thank You!!
Really interesting to see your journey. I had the operation in one hip a few years ago (and it didn't fix things) so I've been looking for alternative answers ever since. Think I'm starting to make progress and some of your videos have given some great suggestions. My question for you is 'Do you have any worries about the damage in the hip capsule(s)?' It sounds like the damage is still visible even after you've reached a great place? So do you hold back? Are you worried about an increased risk of arthritis? Is there anything you've had to give up? In my case, there has been a suggestion that I might have to stop running completely. So now, I don't really run whilst I try to reach a good base level with my hip, with a view to being able to pick it up again and then carry it forwards for longer. Rather than being stubborn now and having to give it up before I'm ready to. So yes, you seem so chilled and curious about your hip(s) but do you have concerns or are there any unavoidable limitations that affect you? Thanks, Candice
Hey, Candice - Sorry to hear surgery didn't fix things. I sadly hear that more than I wish I did. Pain sucks! I personally don't feel limited in any of the dailiy activities I like to do (sitting for meditation, lifting weights, trail running, etc.) It's possible my risk levels would increase if I got back into extreme max effort weightlifting or full time soccer at a high level...but those aren't my passions any more. On a day-to-day basis I feel better than even when I was in my 20's. :-) Keep up the learning and the work - there is much you can do! -Shane
Great video... I started my journey about six weeks ago after I could barely walk with the pain. The stretching helped to calm the pain down but my problem is that once the pain goes I lose motivation to do the stretching and then the pain returns... It's this something you experienced Shane? Any advice please.
awesome information, thanks bud, i am 6 days post right hip surgery, going to get the left done in 13 days, i too have a spinal complication as well, my spinal specialist wanted me to get the hips done first so he could assertain the spinal injury properly. I have L3/4, L4/5 loss of disc, loss od disc height, herniation traversing throguh L5 and L3 nerve roots, central disc bulge, bilateral pars defects on L3, L4 slight fracture and there was a fracture through S3 that has healed by now. all this happened from a fall in 2012. I come from a sports backround and a strong mind set. though this injury has put me to the test in all aspects.
Keep the faith! Definitely start / maintain / improve on your mobility practices (as tolerated) during / after all that! Wishing you good things / fast recoveries! -Shane
Hi Shane, great video. Still confused though how if one has FAI, a bone issue essentially, how non surgical treatment helps, because the fai is obviously still there?
How old were you in 2013 when you started getting progress? I've got FAI and I'm only 22!!! like wtf... just been v frustrated recently that I feel broken so young! And I'm the 'healthy one' in my group, with fitness and diet.... my mates are smokers/don't work out lol
I was 26 man. Yep, it's a pain. I see what you're saying. I can't even tie my own shoes at that time. What are you currently doing to help you get better?
Got ROM done A LOT of reading and just got the FAI fix so that’ll help too - long old road but want to be able to make gains soon! Lost all my muscle ahah
@@johnsmith-yv7rp glad you bought the program? How's it coming along? It's good to supplement them with some weight training, so yep, gaining back those muscles should come in time.
This is truly wonderful. I am currently in so much pain have been trying everything for past 9 months been told surgery may not be wise as they think pain is more deeply muscular and potentially unstable now Do you have any other resources ? I just want to be able to squat and feel like an athlete again..
I have a question. I have FAI mixed on both hips with possible labral tears in both hips. My first surgery on my left hip is in 2 weeks and my 2nd surgery on my right is 6 weeks later. So my question. Is, How much of a difference does it actually make on your back? Over the last couple years I've developed 2 slight bluges in the L 4-5 and L 5-6. I honestly believe my hip tightness and pain from FAI has caused by back problems. I remember when I had my Arthrograms done on both hips, I had instant low back pain when they injected the dye. I just hope all this pain I've been trying to play through the last 3 years will be solved with surgery and rehab
BTW I am a freshman in college and the back and hip pain has been here since early in my junior year in high school. I can't properly squat because it just feels like I can't do perfect form. I have a hard time tying and putting on my shoes, I've tried PT but that didn't work. I honestly feel like it's really affecting my baseball play
Tight hips (whether its due the the bones or not) can definitely cause lots of back issues. I would highly recommend you supplement your surgery with The FAI Fix program and possibly The FAI Fix for Athletes program (eventually.) There is a LOT that traditional physical therapy does not include in recovery programs...
Did you experience any atrophy? if so, how long did it take for the muscle to return? i have a dip/hole in my back above my hip the size of my fist. =/ very hard to get anyone to supply a regimen of rehab.
I have labral damage and I have no pain (anymore). I believe the FAI Fix + FAI Fix for Athletes programs are the best non-surgical options available for addressing the instability and muscle imbalances.
Ok. Can I implement both of the programs at the same time? I've been having issues all the way down into my left ankle on that side (knee too) and up into my low back. Snapping and joint misalignment on the lower leg and ankle. It's just not matching up correctly like it used to. And the low back stuff seems like a combo of QL, Psoas. Pelvis and low back just feel torqued out of alignment as well. When I go into a hip flexor stretch it seems blocked. Like it can't even stretch properly. Thank you for all of the great videos.
Eddie Johnson i have exactly that problem, my hip is really tight But i can't stretch it without pain. Plus my fucked up hip makes my whole body imbalanced and not symmetrical
Is your program about deep squats helpful to someone who has FAI? will it be sufficient to resolve your hip impingement? because I'm not concerned about splits I just want to be mobile enoug for a decent squat Thanks!
Deep Squats has a lot of information about hip and ankle mobility. It will definitely help with hip impingement, but we also created a program specifcally FOR hip impingement at TheFAIFix.com
Do your programs go over what I'll need to change while working on my ROM, in terms of dialing in my current workout program so that it doesn't interfere with recovery? I unfortunately have both shoulder impingement and hip impingement, and I'd like to be able to build muscle (severely lacking in muscle mass) while focusing on recovery! Thanks 🙏🏼
The FAI Fix & FAI Fix for Athletes cover programming for weightlifting while working on your ROM. For the shoulder impingement stuff, you can do the "Super Shoulders" program but strive to not make your body so ridiculously sore and tight that its hindering your ability to make ROM progress with your shoulders.
I need some help I got cam type fai and some kind of a pinched nerve.need help bad and have very .little money.can you offer any kind of pro Bono training or something please.im in so much pain and don't know what to do.im in Berkeley CA.,daniel
why did I discover you just now? I had surgery for FAI/CAM (both) and labral tear exactly a week ago. Have you got any advice for the recovery process? (i also have hip displasia). I'd love to be able to go back to my yoga practice now that that's all been fixed. I wonder if that's going to be possible at all
I dunno...maybe "when the student is ready the teacher will appear?" :-P We have something we call "Scenario 2" in our FAI Fix program that helps those with hip mobility / hypermobility (if that accurately describes you.) People can have FAI / impingement problems from being too tight OR not tight enough. Somewhat of an interesting paradox, eh?
I'm in pain a lot and to be very honest, some of my problems are from lifting weights and not stretching and some of my problems in terms if tightness come from stretching. I get tighter from stretching my tight muscles. It seems counterintuitive but it happens often. I'm a Goggins type, meaning Im inclined to want to do a lot. 2 minutes per day of stretching a tight muscle seems like not enough. I just want to make progress and am not sure what works and what doesn't. Any suggestions are appreciated
@@aaronjohnson6622 I see. I have a hip pain bundle program that might be helpful for you. Check out this link to learn more: hippaingone.com/hip-pain-relief-bundle-org
As someone recently diagnosed with pincer lesion and labral tear, I can't say how much I appreciate your videos. When I got diagnosed, I was devastated and mourned what I felt was my inability to squat and do kickboxing ever again. As time as passed and I've done physical therapy and watched your videos, I'm finally learning to listen to my body, emphasize mobility, use modifications when needed, not go "balls to the wall" like I used to, and just appreciate and be thankful for the small victories and small improvements. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
IM A DAV IN A WHEELCHAIR N CANT WALK N BECAUSE OF A BAD VA DR NEGELANCE IM ALSO HAVING PROBLEMS WITH CHRONIC PAIN N I NOW HAVE TO GET THR SURGERY BOTH SIDES IM LOOKING AT 2 HARD YRS OF PAIN N REHAB
You probably squat to the toilet everyday so it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of dosage/duration/etc. AKA...start with high, slow, light squats and progress to deeper, faster, heavier squats ONLY as you're body say's it's PERFECTLY OK. I used to teach Olympic Weightlifting and had to learn (the hard way) that even though I could squat rock-bottom...my low back was compensating slightly. Work hard on that mobility and progress GRADUALLY. :-) Good luck! -Shane
I'm a powerlifter and have been experiencing FAI (not sure if it is, but its really just pain in the lateral hip especially when in the hole) whenever I'm in the midst of a cycle. Would switching my back squat movement for other less painful or pain-free movements such as goblet squats or hack squats while still working on mobility be as effective as complete rest and focusing on mobility the whole time?
Big side-to-side mobility and range of motion discrepancies due to the underlying FAI and never stretching or doing mobility work. Once I normalized the side to side differences...no more pain!
I was. Although not as bad as I was pre op. Surgery has not worked for me and my fai is now worse. Resulting in me being referred to the musculoskeletal department.
Weird everyone talks loads about being in pain . I have FAI on both hips and no pain just my leg will not cycle a bike amd the muscles get jammed up in my psoas amd lower back 🤷♂️
I respectfully disagree (as someone who HAS FAI.) It all depends on dosage, duration and intensity. FORCING ranges you don't have is dumb, but getting into splits LIKE positions and slowing working towards what is achievable for YOU, is valid. Doing so taught me a LOT about my hips and I've never felt better. Other people are finding similar things.
I also had fai. Per my medical surgeon: hyperstretching, hyperextending contributes to labrum deterioration when FAI is present. That is, before it is corrected surgically and before maximum medical improvement via physical therapy in the months after surgical correction. But then, he's a medical doctor and I am not
Hey Shane. I had a tear in my labrum fixed in December it is now almost March and i have the same pain if not more than before i had surgery when it comes to making certain movements (putting my right leg in my pants or shorts drives my crazy). The surgery did fix my ability to lift and squat, before surgery i could not lift or squat any weight. I can do deep squats with a good amount of weight pain free now but i can’t run or jog. I walk on the treadmill for about 12-15 minutes before i start to limp. What do you think is the problem and what can i do to fix this pain.
Sounds like a problem with hip extension (running) but I couldn't possibly say what the problem is or what to do to fix it unless I knew a lot more about what you've already tried and what's worked or not worked. You can set up a Skype call with me or try TheFAIFix.com program and troubleshoot the issues 1-by-1. Either way, sorry to hear about the surgery not fixing everything completely. I know it's disappointing!
You did not have FAI you had a psoas hip flexor tear. You told everyone in your other video at 0:55 (FAI ruined my athletic career) that you self diagnosed yourself using google. FAI does not cause acute lower back pain. A hip flexor tear does. You are not a trained medical professional but a personal trainer with a very poor understanding of anatomy. Stop giving your google advice.
Hey, Jefferson - I responded to your other comment and hope it clarified some things. I also hope you've found my XRAY and MRI videos at this point. If you have, you know that I didn't merely "Google" my symptoms to get my diagnosis. Also, hip restrictions (like FAI) can DEFINITELY lead to lower back pain. Especially if you are doing activities requiring extreme hip ranges of motion (weightlifting / martial arts, etc.) I hope I am answering your questions and you are getting a more full picture of my story. Let me know if not. -Shane
Shane, since you brought it up, nowhere in the video I commented on did you mention X-rays, MRIs or any medical treatment. You specifically said that you had sudden onset lower back pain during a deadlift and you went home and googled your symptoms. Acute lower back pain during a lift with associated difficulty flexing the hip to touch your toes is a hip flexor tear. FAI may cause back pain but it is not acute pain. Look, I have torn my psoas, also. I know the symptoms. I also have FAI so I know what that feels like. And as an exercise physiologist, I know what causes both problems. FAI is a bone spur. It doesn't cause the pain and symptoms you mentioned. It can cause back pain over time from muscle imbalances or unusual loads from limping. You do a deadlift and tear a back muscle, it's not FAI.

We have something we call "Scenario 2" in our FAI Fix program that helps those with hip mobility / hypermobility (if that accurately describes you.)
People can have FAI / impingement problems from being too tight OR not tight enough.
Are you going through hip pain, or is this more about learning how to stretch and strengthen your muscles correctly?
@@GotROM this is a general question. My hips are tight but so are a lot of muscles
My absolute pleasure / honor. :-)
Thank you thank you!!!
Welcome!
IM A DAV IN A WHEELCHAIR N CANT WALK N BECAUSE OF A BAD VA DR NEGELANCE IM ALSO HAVING PROBLEMS WITH CHRONIC PAIN N I NOW HAVE TO GET THR SURGERY BOTH SIDES IM LOOKING AT 2 HARD YRS OF PAIN N REHAB
Doctor negligence? Sorry to hear that, my friend. :-( I hope some of my videos may be helpful at some point along your way!
Got ROM Do you know a good attorney MY PHONE IS 330 409 5780 IM IN A LOT OF CHRONIC PAIN I NEED THR SURGERY BOTH SIDES
When can i start squatting again? Should i start when i'm pain free?
You probably squat to the toilet everyday so it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of dosage/duration/etc.
AKA...start with high, slow, light squats and progress to deeper, faster, heavier squats ONLY as you're body say's it's PERFECTLY OK.
I used to teach Olympic Weightlifting and had to learn (the hard way) that even though I could squat rock-bottom...my low back was compensating slightly.
Work hard on that mobility and progress GRADUALLY. :-)
Good luck!

Shane, how can I get in contact?
What caused you injury?
Big side-to-side mobility and range of motion discrepancies due to the underlying FAI and never stretching or doing mobility work. Once I normalized the side to side differences...no more pain!
I am 10 months post op and am still having pain. Was anyone still having issues this late into recovery?
I was. Although not as bad as I was pre op. Surgery has not worked for me and my fai is now worse. Resulting in me being referred to the musculoskeletal department.
Dang man, that sucks! We'd like to hear more about your story and see if we can help! Email support@thefaifix.com if you feel so led!
Weird everyone talks loads about being in pain . I have FAI on both hips and no pain just my leg will not cycle a bike amd the muscles get jammed up in my psoas amd lower back 🤷♂️
It's a bit different for some, and it's good that pain is not your enemy. How has your FAI journey been so far? Are you doing some exercises?
ANY kind of "splits" if you know or possibly have FAI is a bad, bad idea.
M Kane I had mine in September and still need 3 days of rest after an easy run. It’s taking forever
Especially if you are doing activities requiring extreme hip ranges of motion (weightlifting / martial arts, etc.)
I hope I am answering your questions and you are getting a more full picture of my story. Let me know if not.
-Shane
Hi Jeff, Can I ask why Shane has a poor understanding of anatomy?
Jefferson Mobbs i just want to train my quads without hip pain pls help SOMEBODY
Jefferson Mobbs in this video go to 9.15 there he mentioned about MRI x-ray.
