I was homeless for 3 years when I was 14 years old to 17. The only way I really survived (and took care of my younger sister) was because of people like that offering me similar jobs. I did roofing, flooring, electrical work, and even some car mechanic work! They were pretty shocked at me being a hard worker and being there quite early and ready whenever they wanted me. Being homeless puts you into such a position where you'll do literally anything, having someone else depending on you furthers that making you have to do just that. I worked hard and was always first to arrive last to leave. Eventually, the man who hired me had me help remodel a house he owned. It was old, and pretty beat up. Naturally, I just figured he was gonna resell it since it was in a great spot with a pond and all. After we finished the remodel, he gave me the house, and a permanent job working for him as long as I wanted to. From there, I worked for the man until he passed away a couple years later. To think that someone with such a heart exists in the world is truly stunning. There are great people out there, they are just far too few to be recognized without stories like this one and mine. Today, the both of us are far better off than we ever would have been were it not for the men who hired me knowing nothing about me during that awful time in our lives.

@Sinnistar Well done and all credit to you for taking the experience and learning from it.
I was homeless last year around this very month. After living temporary in 2 places I did get a flat that I live in now.
From February to June 2017 I I had no carpets, curtains or any white goods.
All I had were a few clothes, microwave and a food bag to live out of. I had to make that food bag last a week.
When you're homeless it takes away all ego and makes priorities VERY clear.
It truly makes you willing to accept not just jobs you wouldn't normally do but solutions and how far you're willing to go.
When you pick and choose you limit your potential.
A year later it angers me that people who don't even have a quarter the ambition of me get jobs. What is even more gulling is people who get the jobs and aren't in them for any real length of time.
Not all homeless people are victims. Some are there because of themselves.
BUT the ones who are like the guy in the story or yourself Sinnistar have the attitude that regardless of who you are will lead to success.

They didn't give that man charity. They gave him respect and the ability to respect himself for a few days. A man needs to work we need to do something, even if it is no more then helping some one who needs it across the street, we need to know we have done something for someone that is worthwhile. It was a special pure gift and that is why the man said what he said at the end of the first day, It is sad but likely true they had shown him more love then he had ever known. Just by giving him something of value to do.

"Then the homeless man did something very, unexpected. While on the roof during working hours the homes man, seemingly without cause, pushes one of the company's employees off the roof, killing him. The homeless man then announces from the rooftops 'Death to the rich! Why should I sleep in cold grass while you all get warm beds! Privileged scum!' The homeless man blows up a smoke bomb and escapes without trace, his nutty cackling still audible in the distance. When everyone processed what had happened the crew found a sloppily handwritten note of disturbing rambling containing private information about the workers' lives ...and how he would ruin them all. To this day no one knows the whereabouts of the homeless man." *INSERT CRAPPY JUMPSCARE HERE*

It's hard to find good workers these days, especially roofers. Roofing ain't no joke, it's hard, tiresome and dangerous. In America it gets so hot in the summer.... on a roof it's murder. I bet in England the wet conditions make it super slippery up there.

This is the actual story ....
A roofer saw a homeless man and asked him if he wanted work for the day.
The homeless man was thrilled and helped the roofers out.
The roofers paid the homeless man $90 and he was so thrilled he asked if he could come back Monday.
The company the roofers worked for said "Good job guys!" but didn't offer anything else to the homeless man.
The roofers shared a Facebook post about what had happened and lots of people commented on the post.
    The end.
Now for WatchJojo's version, just add one of the following between every single word.
    "What happened next was amazing!"
"You will never believe what happened"
    "Something INSANELY surprising happened next!"

I just wanted to say that not all the people you see panhandling are drug addicts working some scam. A couple years ago I had a guy approach me as I was leaving a bar, (on my motorcycle) he asked me if he could have anything I could give him towards a meal, as he hadn’t eaten in a couple days. I told him if he was really hunger to meet me over at the Burger King order speaker that was a couple hundred yards away figuring that was the last I’d see of him. When I got over to the speaker there he was. I told him to go ahead and order whatever he wanted. He then asked me if it would be OK to get a double meat whopper meal because he really hadn’t eaten in a couple days and he was “starving!” I said no problem, and being on my motorcycle and going against my better judgment I gave him a 20 dollar bill to pay for everything (I had gotten a couple burgers and a drink) and meet me in the front of the store where I could park my bike and him and I could sit at an outside table and eat and I could hear his story. As it turned out this guy had one hard luck story after another. He had been released from the military, came home( after unsuccessfully trying to get ahold of his wife for months) only to be greeted at his own locked front door by some big dude who told him to get his “shit” out of “his” house and to stay the f*ck away from his own house and his own wife, or else!!! At this point, (this is all taking place in Flint, Michigan) all he wants to do is get a bus ticket and get to his family in Tennessee. The guy literally brought tears to my eyes. He had been kicked out of the Salvation Army living quarters for getting into a fight with a guy he caught breaking into his locker. They had told him after witnesses backed up his story he could come back in a week but that was policy, so here it was late fall and he was being forced to sleep behind a dumpster until he could get back into the shelter unless he could come up with enough money for a bus ticket. Still being a sceptic, I told him if he was serious I’d meet him there in the morning and take him to the bus stop and buy him a ticket home. The guy couldn’t thank me enough and once again had me all choked up. The next morning he was waiting for me. I bought him breakfast before I took him to the bus station, bought him a ticket and watched him board his bus. He made it home and we remained in touch for several years. Just a guy who got dealt a crappy hand, but was ultimately telling me the truth from the beginning!!!! One of the best parts of this story is it wasn’t too long after getting back to Tennessee when his ex had gotten in contact with him, crying, and telling him she had made a huge mistake and wanted him back!!!! He had already moved on and the last time we had talked he was doing great!!!!

He also said that he wanted to sell the jeep but couldn't because he lives in it. I asked what do you mean. He said he has no ware to live and that he sleeps in the jeep. I ask if he works any ware. He said no. I ask if he was fit to work, and offered him a job with me cleaning up the ground when we were roofing. He told me to meet him off a main road, to pick him up. He worked for me for 3years. in that time I let him sleep and stay in my shop. I helped him pay back money that he owed to get his drivers license back. After 3 years he went his own way. I hope the construction work we did helped.

Just for reference, as an entry level shingler I make 20$/hr and make about 160$ for an 8 hours day. We pay our labour 18$/hr which was what our friend John the homeless man was doing for these roofers. They make about 145$ a day. The moral of the story of I’m correct that John put in a full days work. John was paid 11.25$/hr for general roofing labor, assuming he tore off the old material aswell as loaded the waste into the bin, John was paid a severely shitty salary for his work. Thanks for helping the guy out, probably should have paid him a fair wage. I’d probably pay a 16 year old kid more per hour for labour though. When I started labouring before I shingled minimum wage was 11.50 and I was paid 12. Lugging bundles and removing thousands of pounds worth of roofing materials off of the roof into a bin. I can tell you that 12$ not no where near what I was worth, but I was a kid so it was expected. Hopefully when John showed up for work the following Monday they paid him a fair wage lol

Moved me to tears! People always seem to think that the homeless are either mentally ill, addicted to drugs, or alcoholics... this is not true. I am 60 years old, and I can understand homelessness, because I was homeless for a while myself. It is true that most folks are only 1 to 2 paychecks away from homelessness themselves! People need to treat the homeless with more kindness, compassion, and respect. Homelessness grows month by month, because even people who are employed can end up living in their car, simply because they cannot afford rent, and to pay their bills... if we truly are to love one another, that means to help out those we encounter who obviously need our help! Please don't turn away, and pretend that you don't see...

Dale Slover no, Dale I had not heard of the professor at San Francisco who was living in her car with her husband! That story doesn't surprise me. With each individual homeless person, their story is different...
As for me, I always carry a case of bottled water in my SUV, and I also have gallon Ziploc bag he is full of dog kibble to give to individuals who have dogs...it breaks my heart to see so many homeless folks with their shopping carts and luggage walking the streets...and I also get extremely saddened when I see people's ignorant, cruel and callous attitudes toward the homeless...and so few people even know what to do to find help when they need it. I have casually asked around, and nobody seems to know that if you dial 211, that they can help you get situated with a shelter and food...
How I wish people could think a little longer and deeper about this growing problem, and raise awareness and compassion for these worthy individuals!
Thanks for responding to my comment, Dale God bless you!

But I think everyone got the point I was making about these type of videos except you,
But instead of correcting me on my grammer why did you not just go ahead and compare me to hitler and the nazis, using the wrong grammer? Very constructive input thanks, big deal if people went to school, everyone understood what I writ, or in the queens English what I wrote ? Maybe when u have finished marking the primary 3 English homework, you can check for spelling mistakes, or commas left out, full stops ect in this comment

Some people never went to school but are smart enough to download Grammarly and not double post comments. Seems you do not fall into either of these categories.

He said he didn't want to work he just wanted some money. At least he was honest. My forman told him the job paid $10 an hour and he would be paid at the end of the day. He still said no. Here’s one way to brighten up your day and someone else’s day, too:
Next time you’re in line at a drive-thru fast food place, when you get to the window to pay for your order, pay for the order of the car behind you, too! I’ve done this quite a number of times and it always makes me feel better if I’m having a rough day! I just ask the cashier that if they ask any questions, to tell them that I hope they have a great day!!! (By the way: Doing it anonymously is the best way!)

I have done that several times. However, the ones that really need the help, will not be in the drive-through line. They don't have the money for fast food, and often don't have money to buy a car. I have given homeless people McDonald gift cards. That way, where ever they are, they can get a meal.

    • @Racingirl911
      @Racingirl911 6 лет назад +7

cemwalker That’s a GREAT idea!! I would do that too, except (and this might sound weird to people in big cities) we don’t have any homeless people where I live. I live in a fairly rural area, in a small Midwestern town with a population of about 8,000 people. Around here, if someone is going to be homeless, somebody will take them in until other arrangements can be made-which normally takes a couple of days, but always ends up being less than a week. I would have to drive for about 2 hours before I got to a city big enough to have some homeless people.
I get that some people prefer living in big cities, but I guess I prefer small town life where you pretty much know everybody, and the crime rate is real low. We don’t have gangs, and we only have a murder about every 25 to 30 years.
So, although I cannot directly help a homeless person in the same way you do, I truly admire you for doing what you can to help those who both need and deserve your help! I sure wish that big cities everywhere had a million people *_just like you_* in them!! Wouldn’t the world be a much better place to live if that were true??!! 😊👍🏼👍🏼

    • @cemwalker
      @cemwalker 6 лет назад +4

I actually live in a small town of 2,000. But, we live on a highway that has a lot of people hitchhiking through. We have a town 30 minutes away that has homeless people living in it, but the closest city is 90+ miles away. I feel that I want to treat others as I would like to be treated. I have never been homeless, but I have been so poor that I didn't have two nickels to rub together. I think that people that come from a place of being poor, creates empathy. Those that have always had money just don't 'get' it.

He may not of stayed on the job but give him a shot. Show him a new path. Then help him deal with the dysfunction that made him homeless in the first place...if he will accept it and if it is handled with empathy. This is how we break the poverty cycle.

Why is it so earth shattering when a homeless person decides to work. Why is this such a big story. I praise the guys for employing him to make some cash. But why is it not a story maker when a person with a home gets a job. Are we to believe that homeless are so lazy or deranged that the mere fact of one becoming employed is worthy of an epic trending phenomenon. I find it disheartening that its come to this...like these people are not expected to ever work.

      @dap3051 6 лет назад

He should be giving the empire guys a lot of praise. Yes everyone should help out if they can but rarely do people actually help aside from giving a dollar or 2. Plus this is a private business that hired a random homeless person they happen to see. I don't think I've ever heard of a private business doing anything near this. They deserve a lot of credit and praise and so does John for working hard. Why is John homeless to begin with though? I'm sure it was his own doing most homeless people are homeless because of their own choices.
He probably doesn't know what happened to John. If he did I'm pretty sure he would mention it.

I worked for a roofing company for a day, never again. Absolutely the worst job there is. Out in the hot Texas sun on a roof all day long, no shade, you get no breaks, even to get a drink of water. They had no water to drink. I was suffering from dehydration. The foreman didn't care. Back breaking labor carrying bundles of shingles up a ladder then pulling off old shingles. I was 45 at the time, it was killing me. Minimum wage. Which in Texas is as low as it gets. Big S Roofing, Eastland, Texas. Absolutely the worst job I have ever had.

If they're in a good spot for people going by, that could be why. If they can average at least 4 people giving them a fiver within an hour, then they're already making more than you're likely able to pay them. Some may say they're lazy, but they're not stupid, they've done the math and the begging is more profitable.

Had to leave the job and drive him to a store 30 minutes later and gave him 20 bucks. I'll never forget the look of success on his face. The Bar of humanity and EXPECTATIONS has hit a CRATERED LOW.... Here's Why I say this: They saw he was clearly homeless sleeping on a park bench .... they gave him a shot at working... {perhaps his only shot.... not many opportunities to shave put on interview clothes... ironed shirt, slacks, tie, dress shoes, With an updated resume} So a JOB offer from this roofing situation was his INTERVIEW and his AUDITION....and this group of Do-gooder roofers saw he KICKED ASS all day, He worked REALLY HARD....(from the photos you could just tell ) He was Soooo HAPPY to feel useful again ....and being a part of this roofing project and i'm sure he felt the comradery that these guys share everyday.... Then the next day HE WAS FIRST ON SITE and Had another GREAT DAY and Said He "Never felt such LOVE in his LIFE".... Probably making it VERY BITTER-SWEET when they handed him his pay and said "Good Luck" and Drove away!!!!!
Why Didn't they just offer John a Job???
The ending of this Story was DISAPPOINTING to me .... because they were ok with knowing his housing situation...even posting his smiling pic on facebook getting all the "atta-boys" and, "back-pats" and facebook "likes" and all the followers attention EVEN used his story and pics on the company's FB page and a 2 day "TEST DRIVE"..... and at the end ... "Thanks, Good Luck John :(
In MY OPINION they Made it about themselves and the COMPANY and "LOOK how GENEROUS we ARE" " Aren't we Benevolent Humanitarians".... they gave him a BRIEF window INTO what life could be like.... GOT THEIR PHOTO-OP.... then drove away... SHAME ON THEM

    That's an amazing story 😊
I've been made homeless several times in the past due to mental health problems and the way people treated me just because I didn't have a home to go to was beyond ridiculous... 😔
Police would come past in the middle of the night and kick me awake - yes, KICK - and threaten to arrest me for "vagrancy" apparently it IS a criminal offence to be homeless...
    😧
I would often say that I'd welcome them to arrest me, at least I'd have somewhere warm to sleep and maybe some breakfast - as terrible as police station food is in the UK 🇬🇧 🤒)
It's so refreshing to see this kind of selfless act 😊
I often got a job selling The Big Issue, I lost count how many idiots would budge past me saying "get a fucking job", what do they think selling magazines IS exactly? Nobody wants to employ a homeless person, but The Big Issue was created for just that reason, it IS a job, the only thing a homeless person has any real chance of doing, so ignorant...
    😧

But there is infact laws in the UK stating u can't do things like this cuz it could be an illegal immigrant, he avoided paying tax on his earnings, might of been receiving benefits that shouldn't be given if working and therefore benefit fraud, and the guy never sat through his half a day of health and safety videos they make ya watch all the time.... But that just goes to show how messed up the system is and how once u drop past a certain level in society the system almost seems designed to keep u there

In America the company would fined big time for disregarding OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) policy,, HE would be arrested, put in jail and required to get a mental health evaluation. .. He wasn't officially hired - what if he got hurt on the job, he could then sue the company. Then there's conspiracy to commit tax evasion, he didn't pay the income , social security tax, state tax, etc. and no health insurance and everyone knew,,,,, Then for vagrancy and anything else they could dream up.

I hired a young homeless man in Liberty, MO. I gave this unskilled man $25/hr, with the condition he was NOT under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the time he worked for me.
At the end of the first day I gave home $300 for 8 hours of work. He earned it!
I left him on the job, alone, for about 20-30 minutes when I went to buy our lunch.
When I returned, his demeanor was very different. Spacy and lackadaisical.
Turns out he used the previous day’s earnings to buy LSD and cough syrup (DMX as he called it.)
I told him to get in the car and I would take him to the place I found him panhandling or any location within reason.
He attempted to assault me, calling me a closed-minded hypocrite.
After he landed several blows to my face I fought back. I had no choice - I am not a skilled fighter and could not restrain him without beating him I to submission.
    I was charged with assault.
After appearing in court three times, he finally showed up (he’d been arrested for drug possession) and all charges were dropped against me.
Of course there are people who, through no fault of their own, fall on hard times. I’d love to help anyone on this situation.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of homeless people are addicts and schemers.
Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference.
