What to Know BEFORE You Start the AIP Diet (Paleo Autoimmune Protocol)

    he AIP (autoimmune protocol) is an elimination diet that involves not eating certain types of food for several weeks at a time and carefully noting their effects on our body and health after reintroducing them. The AIP focuses heavily on restoring our gut barrier (the protective intestinal layer the lines our GI tract) and minimizing “leaky gut syndrome” or gut permeability.
    Inside our bellies, we have an extensive intestinal lining covering more than 4,000 square feet of surface area. When working properly, it forms a tight barrier that controls what gets absorbed into the bloodstream.
    An unhealthy gut lining may have large cracks or holes, allowing partially digested food, toxins, and bugs to penetrate the tissues beneath it. That is called “leaky gut” and can trigger inflammation and oftentimes an autoimmune response.
    We all have some degree of leaky gut, as this barrier is not completely impenetrable (and it isn’t supposed to be!). Some of us may be born with a genetic predisposition to this and may have a less robust gut barrier that doesn't protect us as it should. However, our DNA is not the only causative factor for this.
    Modern diet and lifestyle are actually the main drivers of gut inflammation and immune dysfunction. The autoimmune protocol (AIP) helps to seal and heal a "leaky gut," because it includes certain foods that are healing and excludes others that are damaging/inflammatory. Concerning what foods the AIP diet allows you to eat, the rules are the following:
    The AIP Diet Allows You to Eat:
    • Meat (Preferably Grass-Fed)
    • Wild-Caught Fish and Seafood
    • Organ Meats (Offal)
    • Vegetables (Except Nightshade Vegetables - White Potatoes, Eggplants, Hot Peppers, Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, Pimientos, Tomatillos)
    • Sweet Potatoes
    • Fruit in small quantities (preferably low-sugar fruits, such as berries)
    • Honey, Blackstrap Molasses, Maple Syrup, Date Sugar, Coconut Sugar
    • Coconut Products (Coconut Water, Coconut Meat, Coconut Milk, Coconut Cream, Coconut Butter, Coconut Oil, Coconut Flour, Coconut Flakes)
    • Avocado and Olives
    • Fats and Oils (Tallow, Lard, Duck Fat, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil)
    • Herbs and Spices: Asafetida, Basil Leaf, Bay Leaf, Chamomile, Chervil, Chives, Cilantro / Coriander Leaf (leaf only), Cinnamon, Clove, Curry Leaf, Dill Weed, Fennel Leaf, Galangal, Garlic, Ginger, Horseradish Root, Kaffir Lime Leaf, Lavender, Lemongrass, Mace, Marjoram Leaf, Onion Powder, Oregano Leaf, Parsley, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Savory Leaf, Spearmint, Tarragon, Thyme, Turmeric, Wasabi (additive-free)
    • Dairy-Free Fermented Foods (Sauerkraut, Fermented Cucumbers, Cauliflower, Carrots, Beets, Kvass, Coconut Milk Kefir, Coconut Milk Yogurt, Kombucha)
    The AIP Diet Does Not Allow You to Eat:
    • All Grains (Including Pseudo-Grains, Such as Amaranth, Buckwheat, Chia, and Quinoa)
    • All Dairy (Including Butter and Ghee)
    • Eggs
    • Nuts and Seeds
    • Legumes and Beans
    • Nightshade Vegetables (Tomatoes, White Potatoes, Eggplants, Peppers)
    • All Sugars (Raw Sugar, Cane sugar, Brown sugar, Corn Syrup, Agave)
    • Artificial Sweeteners (Stevia, Aspartame, Sucralose, Xylitol)
    • Spices: Allspice, Anise Seed, Annatto Seed, Black Caraway, Black Cumin, Black Pepper, Caraway, Cardamom, Capsicums, Cayenne, Celery Seed, Chili Pepper Flakes, Chili Powder, Chinese Five-Spice, Chipotle Chili Powder, Coriander Seed, Cumin Seed, Curry Powder (typically contains nightshades), Dill Seed, Fennel Seed, Fenugreek, Garam Masala, Juniper, Mustard, Nutmeg, Paprika, Pepper (from black, green, pink, or white peppercorns), Poppy Seed, Poultry Seasoning, Red Pepper, Russian Caraway, Star Anise, Steak Seasoning, Sumac, Taco Seasoning

    Oh my goodness. Thank you so very much for putting all of this information together! What a gift! I have done other diets like this and know what goes into them and that has been a huge factor in my delaying the start. I am running three businesses right now, in a fairly new relationship that is headed towards marriage, and trying to maintain some other healthy habits in the middle of looking at starting this fairly elaborate diet. All of these videos and resources are such a huge blessing because they are saving me so much time and energy in research! It’s really giving me a lot of confidence to have plans in place for days when I am drowning in work or extremely busy. It’s giving me a lot of hope! So thank you again for the time and the intentionality that you have invested in making this information available!

    Oh, I definitely went too low carb in the beginning. I kept wondering why I wasn’t feeling better on AIP and I got discouraged. Then it occurred to me just to try upping the carbs and honestly it was an immediate difference in how I felt. Clearly my body & mind do not feel well going too low carb.

    Hello Kelly and thank you for your video 3 weeks ago my son was diagnosed with pre-stages of lupus and now to support him we all trying to get on this AIP diet so that we don’t have to buy different food and he will be tempted to eat something he is not supposed.
    He’s doing well, he’s taking a lot of vitamins and Doctor said that this can be reverse since he had not been diagnosed with lupus 100% 🙏 ( He’s only 17 years old )

    Hey Michele! Thank you so much for your honest and vulnerable content! It helps SO much. I’ve been trying to heal myself for YEARS and thought I had Hashimotos for forever though doctors refused to even admit I had thyroid issues because I was 15/16 At the time and my mom kept trying but medicine just wasn’t there. Now I’m 25 and stumbled upon AIP after doing my grad school thesis on breast cancer metastasis and inflammation. I have 2 autoimmune conditions now and I’m on day 4 of AIP but your videos helped me prepare and also help me get through it all! I just wanted to say thank you for your content, you are absolutely helping me and I’m sure so many people!

    Hi Michele, I really appreciate your videos they have been extremely helpful. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease about 2 years ago and felt like the world was collasping around me.     For me the AIP was really tough for the first 3 weeks, and the effects and symptoms you mentioned all occurred for me. The symptoms were so bad I had to add more carbs back in to lessen the weakness, fatigue and stress. In week 6 now, I am now working my way back into the AIP again.

      @@blaze56701 WelI, I have been in and out of the AIP lifestyle since writing this. Each time I have gone back into it, these symptoms haven’t happened, because instead of the cold turkey approach, I eased back in, reducing the toxic effects from too many processed foods in the body.
      The one constant throughout the periods of non AIP was, I never ate seeds, nuts, legumes, beans, nightshades, pasta or rice, or vegetable oils. This works for me, but may not for everyone.

    Thank you so much!!🙏 The info you give, the support, your enthusiasm makes me want to carry on! I am new to AIP and have lots of gastro conditions, including leaky gut, sibo, gallbladder issues and gastritis... So I developed lots of food sensitivities... I am basically down to 10-13 foods... I am day 3 on AIP, previously I was near it but I did gluten free grains. Now I don't and follow AIP strictly. The first days I was exhausted, sleeping all the time... I then added some electrolytes in and it got better! I am still tired and have a lot of symptoms but at least I can carry on with life:)) so, electrolytes can be a good idea! Thank you so much!❤️

Where I live we lack good professionals... Sometimes when coming to a gi doc I feel i have broader knowlegde...🤦 So I am trying to take care of myself on my own for now...     I am at the very beginning stages of looking into the AIP diet. I have not been diagnosed with anything other than regular old run of the mill arthritis but honestly haven't gone back to the doc when he suggested seeing a rheumatologist. I want to give this a try before going that route. I'm 45 and my joints have started feeling worse in this past year. In the beginning I just blamed it on my hormones but now I'm thinking maybe the pain and swelling have nothing to do with perimenopause. I found your blog doing research and am purchasing some of your recommended cookbooks. Thanks for all the great info.

    This is my second day of aip, second try in a year. first time i freaked up and didn t reintroduce the aliments properly but i still feeled better. my joint pain dissaperead and atpo got rocket sky and then lowered all of a sudden. I will do better this time, i feel more mentally prepared.

    Thank you! I really like your personality and all of your super helpful videos!! I want to start cold turkey, I just worry about how to combat the first couple of weeks, going from SAD to AIP. I don’t have time to take off work if I get a bad “carb flu”. I’ll take your advice on eating enough veggie & fruit carbs. I can use all the tips of surviving the initiation process hehe...

      Maybe start on a Wednesday or Thursday because the first day or two usually isn't too bad, but then days 3-5 tend to be some of the worst, so you can nap a lot and take it easy over the weekend. I worked full-time when I did GAPS the first time from SAD (similar elimination diet to Paleo) and that's what I did - started on a Wednesday. Thursday and Friday at work were tough but it was kind of nice to have the distraction from food (tough in that I had cravings), and then Sat/Sun was hard because I was tired - so I slept a lot.

    Thank you for this! Just over a week into my AIP protocol, I started feeling worse and experiencing most of what you mentioned here. I was so discouraged thinking “I’ve been doing everything right, why is my gut giving me so many problems all of a sudden?” It was so frustrating and I wish I had seen this before I started lol. When making such big lifestyle changes is frustrating enough, it’s compounded when it feels like its making things worse.

      @@MicheleSpring hi, I did really strict AIP for 50 days. I had no improvement with my symptoms for ankylosing spondylitis. I stopped recently because my doctor keeps noting I have high ulric acids in my blood tests. I want to try again but having researched the best things to bring these down I would eat everyday (apple, banana and green tea). I have eaten a lot of seafood but very little red meat. Red meat maybe once a week. Any advice is really really really appreciated

    Thank you for the reminder about not being food perfect. I have HS and recently took a food sensitivities test. I am now following my specific AIP diet. After being plant based/vegetarian for more than half my life I have had a lot inner turmoil about eating meat again. However, after watching several of your videos it helped validate my feelings and my new diet.
    I am eating only my “safe” foods and find social gatherings stressful. I also have that fear of eating a trigger food. Even though my food sensitivities are non life threatening, my quality of life is: the pain, my intimate relationship and my relationship with myself. Anyway, I went on a nice long tangent.... when I just want to say thank you.
    I dont personally know anyone else following an AIP diet so watching your videos gives me a sense of community and hope for a normal/pain free life. Thank you

      I'm glad I can be that community for you - the struggle is so hard sometimes when suffering from a chronic disease like that, especially when you don't have personal friends going through the same thing. We all have that fear of eating trigger foods because the alternative is, well, not good and sometimes can be downright devastating. Sometimes not just physically even but emotionally and mentally too, which I can imagine is definitely a factor with HS. Sounds like you're on the right track though and I hope you can find some relief soon! ❤️

    Headaches. I’m on day 4 and still have all day headaches. This video has helped prepare me as I watched it the night before I started. I also wonder if the headaches are summer related because I had the same problems last year. (This is our second summer in Texas). Anyone else have ongoing headaches?

    Hi Michelle, I've been thinking about going on an AIP diet because I want to get rid of my alopecia. I'm not sure if it is going to help or not and how long I should be on it. France is going on quarantine for a month and I thought it would be the perfect time for me to start my diet. Great video btw 👍🏾👍🏾

      Dr. Barry MD has videos out on the keto diet and how it heals alopecia. You might want to check those. To be specific he talks about male pattern baldness but I think it falls under the same category. I could be wrong.

    Hi Michelle. Thank you for a fantastic channel. I have started AIP about 13 days ago. I have been doing really great on it and i have loved some of your recipes. I have one concern that is really troubling me. I have loads of veggies, meats, fruits, some of the bread / taco recipes you have posted and have water only to drink. I have found that i wake up with extreme shakes, or it will happen in the course of the day. I have not found what it is that is causing this. My doctor has said it could be ketosis. I have gone to the extreme of having sugar to see if it works. Then i have had bread to see if the shakes stop. I did find that with bread the shakes stopped. But now my body is aching and i have a splitting headache. In your experience could you possibly enlighten me on what this may be. We have started bringing in Cassava, Tapioca and coconut flour. I am allergic to coconut, i have shortened it down to the flour being the allergen. I can use the milk, cream and oil. If i get the shakes i feel like i want to loose my mind.
    Please be so kind as to help with you opinion on this.

I have been mostly off gluten for 10 years now, however, cheats definitely happen but it seems more and more foods don't suit me & multiple auto immune issues have spiked after a move to a different continent. Can I ask whether frozen veggies with no flavouring is ok to eat or does it need to be freshly cut always?

      Yeah, frozen veggies are fine. They're usually frozen at the peak of freshness so they can be even more nutritious than veggies that have been transported from far off distances.

      I buy a lot online - like a lot of the specialty things - from either Amazon, Thrive Market, or ShopAIP - because I either can't find them locally or they are cheaper than local. But many things can be found locally that you'll need too, especially if you just stick mainly to eating whole, nutrient-dense foods like veggies, meats, fruits, and seafoods. I try to make that the bulk of my diet and then just add the specialty snacks, etc as treats sprinkled here and there.

    Thank you so much for this video! I just started the AIP diet - week 2. I am feel a bit better, but tired. I definitely already had low stomach acid because I was prescribed famotidine - and I don't like it. I am sure it's worse now. For the past five months, I had a lot of hypoglycemic and allergic reactions (foods that I have eaten all of my life) and was diagnosed with Hashi's. I am just EXHAUSTED with AIP. When can I start reintroducing "starchy" foods? 😊🤞

    On AIP for about 3 weeks now (I think. This journey is blurring together 😅). It has definitely been hard. I was already cutting back on certain items before I learned about AIP. I definitely saw an increase in my flare ups (I have hashimoto's) so much so that my mom starting asking me to stop my diet change. I experienced a heightened sensitivity to foods (coffee and paprika stopped being my friend 😩). And I definitely experienced the increase in hunger and an increase in sugar cravings. I also found that staying hungry would flare me up, so I have learned to eat always lol. I have snacks on me at all times. One thing I have also noticed is developing acne like a 13 year old girl 😳 - hopefully that goes away! The only thing I'm still struggling with is the cravings for a drink other than water! Might you have a video on yummy AIP friendly drinks??
    A question a little off topic: I know AIP doesn't condone sugar. However, I heard water kefir is good for those on AIP, but all recipes call for sugar. Even the recipe I found in an AIP recipe book 😶. I'm just wondering, is sugar ok in water kefir? Or is it that some sugar is ok?

      Let's see - first as for sugar - it depends on what version of AIP you're doing, but I talk about the Autoimmune Paleo version of AIP developed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne and she does allow naturals sugars (like honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, maple sugar, and molasses) in moderate amounts.
      And as for the sugar in things like water kefir, kombucha, and for curing bacon, etc, it's also ok. Most of the sugars are eaten by the bacteria in these cases so it's not a problem. You just want to look out for store-bought drinks that add extra sugar.

    I've recently been diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa. I'm having a really bad time with it that means surgery every other month almost there to get these things removed. It was suggested that I go on the AIP diet going along with the medications I'm on. Would this be something you could help me with? I'm disabled I'm in a wheelchair and I just don't have a lot of money to get help. So I'm looking for someone who can help me that knows what they're talking about. And you seem to know what you're talkin about. Let me let you know a little bit about my past. When I was 9 months old my dad and I were in a car train accident. I lost both my legs the left side above knee and the right side is a hip disarticulation. I have severe arthritis from overuse of my arms. I was actually supposed to have my right shoulder replaced on the 7th but I had another severe flare-up of HS and I had to have infections and tracking/tunneling removed a week and a half ago. I've now been taken off a joint replacement list because of the hidradenitis suppurativa and the infections. I'm having a heck of a time right now. I'm in so much pain all I do is sleep I've never been so depressed and I don't know what to do anymore. If you feel you can help me I would be more than happy to give you my email address

      I'd just be careful to not go too low carb as it's easy to do. Make sure to include lots of nutrient-dense carbs like sweet potatoes, plantains, squash, etc and also healthy fats like avocados, coconut, olives, etc. (Incidentally, those fats make great snacks when the sugar cravings hit mid-afternoon).

Can you tell us what we’re your triggers and if you cannot eat them anymore at all? For example, grains or gluten, do you have to eliminate grains or gluten ongoing long term.     For me it has been the easiest 😂. I eat what I like the most ( still miss the bread and the cakes) but on the whole it’s been like second skin😊. I lost almost 5 kg 🎉🎉🎉🎉 thanks to Sophie van Tiggelen’s cooking books. Best recipes ever ❤

    Did it for a month a while back. Idk what I did or didn't do right but I got what felt like a kidney infection on week 3. I had no insurance to go to a doctor so I just laid in bed for three days. I never broke my protocol though and finished out the month feeling great otherwise. Haha.

    My biggest problem I am finding is the lack of normal looking food and lack of ingredient access (living in rural Australia sucks for that, sauces in particular... on and eating enough carbs as I am having issues with textures of a lot of the compliment foods (almost 2 weeks and really hoping I start feeling better soon cause I am going mad lol)

    I have a mold allergy, and I'm supposed to avoid fermented foods. Sometimes they stir my allergies. I added probiotics, because I am finishing steroids and just did 3 antibiotic rounds to get rid of sinus infections and allergies. I'm doing this diet because I feel like I've been failed by medicine.

    What is your opinion of food sensitivity tests? I know they aren’t a reliable or definitive test, but could they be an indicator of things to avoid during the elimination phase? I took one about a year ago before realizing they weren’t considered definitive and it suggested I should avoid a few fruits. I don’t detect symptoms when I eat them, but I am thinking I should just cut them out while on elimination and reintroduce them like anything else. The problem is that would include coconut… which seems pretty foundational in most AIP recipes. Do you have any suggestions?

      Eh, I really don't think they're the most useful things to take when you have a leaky gut. Too many times I've seen evidence that when you have a leaky gut, ANYTHING can trigger the antibodies on a food sensitivity test. It doesn't necessarily mean that that food is an issue, it's just that you had that food within a few days of the test and your body is reacting to it. But if you had had other foods within the test period those may have come up instead. I put way more stock in tests that are done once you've done a healing diet - but even then I feel that elimination and reintroduction is the absolute best way to determine for you if you're sensitive to a food. I think if you're not detecting symptoms that you're fine to include those items - but if after a month or two you aren't feeling better then I'd look to those first just in case.
      And as for coconut if you do wind up eliminating that as well - so many people have coconut sensitivities (where they actually feel major symptoms when consuming coconut products) so I really try on my website (thrivingonpaleo.com) to provide alternatives to coconut in all of my recipes. It's actually not very difficult to do, you just have to plan to use the alternatives available - and once you know them you can usually translate that back to other sites that don't give the alternatives as well.

    After I suffered from the H Pylori infection which caused so many symptoms including low stomach acid, I had to treat it with antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors which made things worse but got rid of the infection all together. This week I am starting the AIP diet to calm down the inflammation (especially gastritis) and heal my leaky gut. I am taking enzymes and two caps of betaine hcl with pepsin and bitters (low dose due to gastritis) to improve meat digestion cause usually consuming animal products just sit in my stomach for prolonged time. Any tips on how to implement the AIP diet to improve the low stomach acid issue so to eat more meat or is it just a matter of time since pH levels get back to normal?

      It sounds like you're going about it the right way - it does often take some time but as your body gets used to food, your gut microbiome stabilizes, etc, you should start to notice a difference (hopefully in the right direction!)

    I have very dry skin. I am a hashimoto and autoimmune liver disease patient, I am going free of all grains, cereals, gluten and diary and I it has been 3 months now. Although my stomach is okay but my skin (face) is extremely dry, flaky and itchy. Now a days my face is full of rushes and redness I am not sure what I am doing wrong or what to do at this point.

      Heightened food sensitivity and gluten withdrawal, I feel were my two main reasons for my flare ups when I first went AIP. Just a little bit of paprika on fish sent me spiraling downward. I caved one day and got a coffee and I could barely get out of bed the next day. The gluten withdrawal I looked up and it totally made sense to me. I'm getting in with a dietician to ensure I'm progressing well through the diet change which I recommend.

    Please help! I have hashimotos for 10 years. On synthroid. I started a whole food plant based diet a few weeks ago, and I’m starting to feel like crap on and off for the last week or so. I feel like my thyroid is having a flare up, ear pain and jaw pain and thyroid pain. A lot of bloating and tiredness, cold sensitivity. I have lost 20 lbs. I don’t know what’s going on? I don’t know much about AIP, I’m learning now. Am I doing something wrong? Is plant based lifestyle wrong for hashimotos? My doctors here are all about pushing meds and not about nutrition. Can you give some advice please

    Well, I come from a 4 month carnivore diet to fight my ulcerative colitis. Currently, I am in aip for about 2 weeks and experience low appetite and the last few days a lot of bloating like something sits in my gut and is fermenting but no acid reflux and stuff at all.
    I already took a beatine hcl supplement with pepsin while on the carnivore diet but not during aip. Maybe I will try that again.
    In general, there is a lot to watch out, I guess. For example if fermented foods work and so on. It is all about testing...

      100% it's all about testing. We are all SO individual and what works for me might not work for you and vice versa. It takes time and experimentation but it will help you for the rest of your life - knowing what affects you, helps you, hurts you, etc.

    I've recently bought an AIP leaky gut tea on Amazon. It does miracle to my gut from day 1. What worries me is the ingredients that despite AIP labelling aren't AIP. For example slippery elm, licorice root and marshmallow root. What do you think about it? I read an article the other day where the author confessed she did take those herbs when being on AIP diet. Although she was under control of a holistic healthcare specialist. Importantly it helped her too. Why then argue against those herbs?

      So here are my thoughts on this - they CAN have an effect on digestion, sometimes making stools loose, etc, and can have an effect on the immune system. However, just like that article's author, I took a non-AIP substance - maca the first time I did AIP while under a functional medicine practitioner's care (and at one time licorice root as well), and I still healed. There are no guarantees that they'll cause issues, but Dr. Ballantyne recommends removing them or at least using strong caution because many do have issues. But if you've been taking it and haven't had any issues and feel better, than I say keep going. That being said - if at any time you start to feel worse (which sometimes can happen with immune-stimulating substances- it takes a while to see any negative effects), I'd stop them immediately. Everyone is different, so listen to your body and it may be perfectly fine for you!

      That's hard for sure - I did AIP the first time when my kids were 2 and 5 and they were still getting up due to nightmares, etc but definitely not as much as an infant. It's a difficult season in your life with young kids, but do what you can, give yourself grace when you don't get much sleep, and if possible, try to find 10-20 minutes to either meditate or take a nap a few days a week. I even recommend hypnosis audios as I "wake up" from those (you don't actually go to sleep, just get deeply relaxed) more refreshed than a nap and you get the added benefit of reducing bad habits or cultivating habits you want. Whatever you do, just don't be hard on yourself, it'll get better and you'll get more and more nights of deep sleep, but for now just accept that's one area you won't be able to improve that much right now. Focus on the ones you can!

    Hi Michele, I recently saw a functional medicine doc, did an extensive blood test to try to determine why i had constant joint pain, etc. I found that I am allergic to wheat gluten, rice, coconut, corn, dairy, and weird stuff like watermelon and pineapple. She suggested I got on a AIP diet. In my limited research for recipes, etc., I’m finding a lot of recipes contain coconut and or rice. I’m feeling completely overwhelmed. Does this mean that I’m limited to grass fed met and veggies? Help?

    Hey Michele, So in May 2019 my autoimmune arthritis suddenly came about and I got diagnosed quickly and wanted to treat it naturally so July 1,2019 I started the AIP diet. It was probably a couple months in I did it more strictly (cutting out guar gum, citric acid and the more hidden things). I've tried a number of supplements and essential oils, some which have maybe helped some that haven't. I've switched almost all of my cleaning, detergents, etc. to all natural.I've overall been doing so much better since AIP but still have lots of inflammation in my toes and middle fingers specifically.
    I know full healing takes time and everybody's different but I've had a healthy lifestyle and diet (although I ate nightshades daily). I guess I thought I'd find full healing quicker than those with unhealthy lifestyles or strong medications before doing AIP. I was wondering if you had any suggestions of other things that could be factoring in to me still not being symptom free 8 months in?

      Do you have a doctor (preferably open-minded/natural) that can help you test for infections/parasites, etc? Usually by 8 months in the diet I'd hope to see more changes. If you're still having inflammation it's most likely due to some sort of underlying root cause that doesn't respond to diet. Unfortunately I'm not overly familiar with the common root causes of arthritis-related symptoms (like I am with Hashi's, for example), but typically once you figure those out it's a pretty quick recovery. You may need some sort of medicine/antimicrobial/antiparasitic/antibacterial kind of thing to eradicate an infection or parasite for example, but once you do that, and since you've done the other work of the diet, it hopefully would be rather quick to find relief. And it's NOT failure if you do happen to have to take some medication - these are all just tools to help us heal (and I had to take antimicrobials for an underlying gut infection when I first went on AIP ). If you can preferably find a functional medicine practitioner or naturopath it would be best as they're usually much more versed in this sort of thing. I hope you can figure it out soon though!

Even within the same job title/field. So if you don't already have your doctor picked out, just do some research, ask some questions, and you should be good.

      eh, it's hard to tell. Plenty of people still have sensitivities to foods that are AIP compliant, but it's too soon to tell that for you just yet if you just started. It could be just a product of leaky gut - skin issues tend to be quite exacerbated by leaky gut and the first few weeks of AIP could make it even worse as you go through the detoxification and gut bacteria changes. But I'd expect it to start clearing up after like, week 3? (Skin issues also can take a bit longer than some of the other things to really start seeing some results). If you still feel it after week 3 comment back and I can help you troubleshoot.

      The chlorella and spirulina can be problematic and Dr. Ballantyne advises keeping them out (she goes into why in this article: www.thepaleomom.com/why-seaweed-is-amazing/ ). As for the wheatgrass - it sounds like it should also be eliminated (source: www.thepaleomom.com/aip-eliminations-summary/ ) but I'm not exactly clear on why - some sources say it contains wheat germ agglutinin (not the same thing as gluten, but problematic as it can exacerbate leaky gut and be an antinutrient).

    So my mom says she’s in constant pain 8/10 scale and has had multiple surgeries. She has degenerative disc disease, I.B.S., along with other autoimmune issues.       It's definitely worth trying - if anything the lessening of inflammation many times helps with pain, and then the healing of a leaky gut can help get rid of many (if not all) symptoms of the autoimmune issues. Many people find a lot of relief from trying the diet and determining if any particular foods might be affecting them! It's only a few months and if it has the potential to help, why not just take those few months and try? That's my thoughts on it at least 😀

      Yes, though as a nursing mother you may need more calories than most, so it's recommended to make sure you get in enough starchy carbs (sweet potatoes, squash, plantains, etc) as that whole "accidentally" low carb thing is really important to avoid in your situation. But if that isn't proving to be enough, adding something like white rice could also help.     Now I know why I haven't been able to get up early in the past 2 weeks. I can't say that I feel tired all day but I started to wonder if I was depressed.
    Also, I want to add two more things I noticed:
    1. WATER. My doctor mentioned that I need to increase water if there is an increase in protein intake.
    2. Sometimes it's hard to track calories for recipes like AIP tortillas etc. I'm trying to stay low calorie to lose weight and I'm finding it a bit difficult to assess what I'm eating unless it's just meat and veggies.

    "You may have nightmares about eating a non-AIP food" - Yup. I'm on my 18th day and for the past 5 I've had these dreams, todays dream was about some potato chips (not sweet potato)

      haha - isn't it such a weird feeling? "OMG, POTATO CHIPS" probably wouldn't have been on your radar as a nightmare a year ago, right? (or even a few weeks ago). Alas, they do go away for the most part - though I still have infrequent dreams about eating gluten 6 years later....

    Do you recommend any fish oil supplements or any at all for inflammation? I take vit D 50,000 a week but want to add anti inflammatory supplements to help

    blood type A people naturally have low stomach acid and can't digest red meats. best to start with turkey, chicken, fish. And take digestive enzymes with each meal.

      That's the worst part!! Having people around you making stuff that (a) smells amazing and/or (b) you feel bad about offending them. But I've found most people understand when you explain to them that you can't eat it because you're trying to understand what makes you sick. Even if your daughters are young (not sure how old they are), you could help them make a cake that is more friendly toward your needs...

    HA! "there is no Paleo police...." so true! Another good video, thank you! I am in the "can't even" stage but also going through an Epstein-Barr virus protocol to get that in to remission so it's been an interesting two weeks! And to not have my adrenals get stressed I'm making sure to eat everything 2-3 hours and if not feeling hungry I grab bone broth. That helps!

      Unfortunately no, because regular black chai tea includes spices that are not allowed on the elimination phase of AIP. Sorry!       Eh, it won't necessarily help it if you're lacking stomach acid (which is actually the reason for most gerd and reflux issues - LACK of stomach acid rather than too much as they have us believe). I'd look into trying to increase that first either via acid (betaine HCL) supplements or digestive enzymes. There are a lot of great articles out there these days to help lead you through this as I really am not an expert - however went through it myself and supplementing with betaine HCL made SUCH a difference for me.

    How do you stick with AIP when you don’t like most veggies! I can’t even smell some veggies
    This becomes frustrating so this is why I eat lots of fruit!
    Can you help me?

      I'd play around with how you prepare the veggies. For example, have you tried roasting any veggies in bacon fat? That was kind of my "gateway" to eating vegetables since I HATED them prior to eating a grain-free diet and the roasting gives them a nice caramelized taste + bacon fat is awesome. You want to roast them until they're slightly blackened, so usually that's like 25 min or so at 425 F for most things. You can also douse them in sauce, which hides the flavors and makes them more palatable. And soups often can pack a lot of flavor that doesn't taste like the vegetable - I have a few on my site: thrivingonpaleo.com/browse-paleo-whole30-aip-recipes/?_meal_type=soups-and-stews
      It took me a while to get used to them using those methods, and then eventually I found my body craving them and I started to really like the flavors of vegetables. But it definitely wasn't an overnight thing, so have patience. Hope that helps!
