Such a commonsense approach that dispels all my qualms about patterning from an original. Keeping half of the garment intact, marking specific pieces, careful measurement additions etc are so helpful as pointers. And the fabric...Perfect! I think the empire waistline with band is a great style that suits you well. Thanks again for wonderfully informative feast.
"Save one half of the dress for reference" was a real face palm moment for past me, who instead chose to suffer. Anyway, it turned out amazing, it's a great style on you. And your hairstyle in your intro is so cute
This was a fun change of pace. It was great to see how to get a dress from another dress. I’d like to see you organizing your sewing space. Maybe I’ll get some good ideas. 😄
Hellooooo Bianca! Ok here's an idea, make face masks out of the cute destroyed dress fabric and give them away to subs or patrons in a lottery or something XO~Dawn
OMG weird, I'm watching this from Brighton, UK (01:45)! When I heard you mention the name of the shop was Beyond Retro I started, like 'Beyond Retro is a chain with stores overseas?/Just a weird coincidence?' and then you were like 'in Brighton, England, actually' and I'm like 'OMG MY BEYOND RETRO!' (I dig that place - t'aint cheap but they always have amazing, quality finds.)
I think the facing on the back is so that it looks better when exhibited on a hanger at the shop. They often line the part of the back that can be seen from the front.
I love how you say "We" like I'm not just sitting watching you do all the work. You're so nice.. I love the bodice. That self lining v neck is so pretty and clean.
Thank you Thea! I actually still don't like this empire-ish waisted style on me much, so I suppose it's nice others seem to disagree with me. Still not my favorite!
I love everything about the cut and fit of that dress. I rarely wear a dress but I would wear the heck out of that one. Thank you for showing us the process.
Oh well done! This is the work I truly adore. I have found these intensely overlocked pieces are often South American fabrics worked willynilly to meet orders using leftovers. That usually included leftover barely usable zippers.
Lovely project . The straight skirt on this look perfect for more classic lady style dress. I love the gathering on skirt it's nicer than gathering all width of skirt.
A handy list of mini tutorials I wouldn't mind seeing are the techniques you use in individual videos. Like a single video on your zipper technique, or a mini video on gathering stitches. Short little clips that a novice could refer back to when looking for a specific technique.
You look gorgeous in that dress. The colours (yep, Aussie spelling) and the style really suit you! Thank you for sharing this journey with us. Inspires me to tackle a hand-me-down dress that I love that needs repairs. Best wishes from Down Under 🇦🇺👗👒👠🌸😎
I absolutely love this dress on you!! Concerning the possible sewing room clean-up video, I reeeaaaallly need to organize my sewing room, too, and I kind of love the idea of watching you organize yours while I'm organizing mine...so "yes please!" ;-)
I know you down played the fabric because it was inexpensive but I really like it and I am always in awe of how you accessorize. Good job on the dress.
Loved it! 🤩🤩🤩If I have a favorite dress or something, I shamelessly copy it by pinning pattern paper to it and trace it with my tracing wheel. And then it’s always possible to make little tweaks if the fav dress needs it a little bit 😜 A few summer dresses and tops have been made this way 😁 but taking apart a broken garment a great tip 🤩💃🏻
This dress design is so cute! The waist curve and back collar add a little something. Adore the rayon print too. Together they are perfection. (Better than the 80s original.)
Hi Bianca, loved everything about this video! Such a lovely print and the end result looks fabulous! Would you consider doing more of this type of "recreating a garment" videos? Would love that! ❤
Really interesting insight into cloning an existing dress! I love the silhouette of the bodice. I feel like it would be pretty easy to make it work for my larger chest by adding extra to the gathered section below the bust, so I may try that!
The material looks like someone scattered silk flowers on a black velvet shawl. I like the gathering instead of darts. Very good pattern! Would like to have that pattern myself! It looks so lovely on you. Thanks for the inspiration!
I so wish I had found this channel last March! I took apart a dress and a top that were too worn for donating and that I loved. The top is fairly straightforward but the retro style dress, it would have be so helpful when I go to make it! I’m just glad that I still have one to take apart, and will only take one side apart. The fabric you used is so pretty, and it is so wonderful to hear your thought process!
Thank you I have a 40's style dress with exactly that kind of midriff style bodice and was not sure how to approach the sewing of it!! and Now I feel more confident about using a ruined dress for Pattern making!! But also thank you for the morning Giggle Some of our sewing terms lead to tongue twisters for sure!! Just be glad the fabric was not "Sea Shells on a Sea Shore" lol thank you so much for your channel !! and Your Inspirations
Tbh i was totally lost with all that gathering. 😅 I hope it will make sense when i do this on my own. And great outcome!! 👏 I know its just a little detail, but i'm especially impressed by the hem at the sleeves. 😁 And YESSS PLEEEAAASE to an organization video! 🙏
Blanca, this is a great 'how to' video!! The ruching does get somewhat lost in the print, but it gives a feeling of softness to the silhouette, even from a distance. I think it looks great ! I have a very special dress that is too small now. This video has inspired me to attempt a size-up of it. But first I need to finish the Faux Roman Shade Valance for our home office! Wish me luck!!
Taking apart an extant garment, to get a pattern to make a replacement garment was very common in the 19th century. Even brand new dresses, made by a professional seamstress, were taken apart to create a pattern for future use.
Alas I just don't know much about it! I really only buy vintage suiting when it comes to clothes, the majority of my collecting is in accessories. I just take my suits to reliable dry cleaners!
AWESOME YOU ARE THE SHIZZ TO THE NIZZLE !!! GUURRLL YOU ARE TOO TALENTED DAAYYMM keep going BEE some more of that on the FLY YO! big upps from new zealand ;-)
This is perfect timing. I had a yard of a pretty fabric that I'd found on amazon. So a decided to do a 20s hour dress. And just to add some adventure didn't measure anything. Just draped it on my form and pinned. I raised the waist because the dropped waist is not my friend. So there are a crap ton of tips I can use and I thank you most sincerely for posting this today
another fantastic video! I'm just about to take apart an old dress and make a pattern so this video came at the right time! would also love to watch an organise before and after of your sewing room... yes I am one of hose sad people who enjoy watching that kind of thing lol
Don’t know why it took me so long to watch this video. I’ve always been curious about your sewing room. Anyway, it is great to see a room that resembles my space when it is all cleaned up!
I just want to say that the seam allowance is small because when they surged it it got cut down ...it was cut bigger, too ;) ...and it came out beautifully!
Fun! And it looks smashing on you, too. I made a tea cosy today. Mug mats to match tomorrow! Purple gloves are my fave... while I have a soft spot for matchy accessories (I’m just old enough to feel uncomfortable when shoes/belt/purse are not same color), I really like a well thought out contrast.
it looks wonderful! i love necklines that are high in the back like that. the wrong side of that fabric was pretty cool. i need to hunt for some fabric that looks similar on the wrong side, then sew a dress with it as the right side. great job!
Absolutely loved this! Really great to see how to replicate a garment. Didn’t mind it one bit thatbit wasn’t a traditional pattern drafting video. Super interesting to learn about the self facing neckline as well as that interesting collar! Loved the end result!
I like the new dress! I also like the fabric of the original; is there enough to make a blouse, maybe? It would be a shame not to use it for SOMETHING. And yes to the organizational video.
Thank you Jeanne! I think I cut the damaged skirt portion off (years and years ago) to make something else with it...but now I don't know where I put it!
I love how this dress turned out! I'm glad that damaged dress was able to be reborn into something much more wearable.
Thank you Chae!

Oh, my Gosh, Bianca!! I love the new dress. That pattern and colors are perfection. Always a pleasure spending time with you!! 🤗
Thank you Debra!
Every time I watch one of your videos I learn so much! Love your work!
Thank you Kat!
"Save one half of the dress for reference" was a real face palm moment for past me, who instead chose to suffer.
Anyway, it turned out amazing, it's a great style on you. And your hairstyle in your intro is so cute
Thank you Holly! I was sure glad I kept that other half once in the middle of the process 😅
This was a fun change of pace. It was great to see how to get a dress from another dress. I’d like to see you organizing your sewing space. Maybe I’ll get some good ideas. 😄
Thank you Kati!

Oh I need a pattern of this!!!
I love how you say "We" like I'm not just sitting watching you do all the work. You're so nice..
I love the bodice. That self lining v neck is so pretty and clean.
Its almost forensic but fascinating seeing all the stages.
Wow that is SUPER flattering to your figure!!!!! You need to make this dress in perhaps a navy or burgundy!!!
Thank you Thea! I actually still don't like this empire-ish waisted style on me much, so I suppose it's nice others seem to disagree with me. Still not my favorite!
The straight skirt works well and is true to the forty look. It is a beautiful dress!
I love everything about the cut and fit of that dress. I rarely wear a dress but I would wear the heck out of that one. Thank you for showing us the process.
Thank you!
Organization video?! Yes PLEASE!!
Oh well done! This is the work I truly adore. I have found these intensely overlocked pieces are often South American fabrics worked willynilly to meet orders using leftovers. That usually included leftover barely usable zippers.

Thank you! The organization is always getting put on the backburner over here, if I make it a video I'll HAVE to do it ;)
I know you down played the fabric because it was inexpensive but I really like it and I am always in awe of how you accessorize. Good job on the dress.
Thank you Vicky!

Hi Bianca!! Wonderful vlog.. WOW, what a beautiful dress reborn out of a ruined dress.. Love the new fabric, looks amazing on you....
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Thank you Deana!
WOW! That was fun to watch! Loved the different accessories you pared with it! Those purple gloves! To die for!
Thank you Janet!
This dress design is so cute! The waist curve and back collar add a little something. Adore the rayon print too. Together they are perfection. (Better than the 80s original.)
Thank you Jenni!

You are a wonderful example. I love your style and your costuming skills.

Oh my, that dress is STUNNING
Thank you!

Thank you Antonia!

Dang, bod!!! That style looks really good on you!
Always interesting to see how purchased garments differ from home patterns. Cut on facings for example. Thanks. Great project.

That is such a flattering shape. Lovely work.

Would you be willing to do a video on washing vintage? Like silk/wool/dry clean only and getting rid of that vintage smell?
Alas I just don't know much about it! I really only buy vintage suiting when it comes to clothes, the majority of my collecting is in accessories. I just take my suits to reliable dry cleaners!
Wow! You look fabulous. The dress is beautiful as well.
Thank you!

Thank you Cyndy! I can't wait to use this easy collar again :)

Thank you!
Pretty dress, great job.
Thank you Julie!
Don’t know why it took me so long to watch this video. I’ve always been curious about your sewing room.
Anyway, it is great to see a room that resembles my space when it is all cleaned up!

I love this dress! I hope you can do another one at some stage with the more flowing A-line skirt.
Thank you Tracie!
I just want to say that the seam allowance is small because when they surged it it got cut down ...it was cut bigger, too ;)
...and it came out beautifully!
Ah yes indeed, my own serger has been bladeless for so long I hardly even remember what it's like to work on one that isn't broken ha!

@@TheClosetHistorian Bummer! Hmm, how about a scarf? The long, narrow tube kind to tie in your hair or around your neck?
Wonderful! I'd love to see an organization video of your sewing room. Also that finished product is so so beautiful!
Thank you!
Loved this video. The dress is phenomenal!
Thank you Anna!
Lovely dress and I enjoyed seeing the patterning process. Thanks!
