The fact that you had only a limited amount of fabric, I think, lends authenticity to the dress. My mom (1920-1991) would talk about how little they had to make clothing with during the depression and WWII, even that they carefully removed and reused basting thread. Skirts we frequently straight for economy. Your dress is lovely, and I enjoyed your "video diary". Thank you!
This is like the third time I watch that pattern drafting. At first I was confused -- WHAT 🐒 -- but now I feel less so. Since I started watching you this summer I have actually managed to make clothes that I can actually wear, so thank you! ❤ I even hemmed my last project by hand (!) following your instruction
Thank you soooo much for your detailed documenting of your sewing process.I learned quite a bit, especially with your explanations. You are an excellent instructor, and I so hope your followers will want more of these videos in the future. Count me in for affirmative votes of this style video.
Loved the dress. I won’t pretend to be able to draft such an original pattern myself, but as I go to sewing classes, I understand more now than I used to. I am inspired to try to come up with my own design. Love the 40ies and 50ies styles. I look forward to your next video.
I use a trick for the same dress form when it comes to bust size. I use an old bra that I don’t use anymore and stuff it with cotton stuffing and put it on the dress form. It helps if you need to drape on a form and need an accurate bust line.
Matilda's Messes I have done the same with mine. For the hips, she wears a pair of shorts padded out with fabric. I’m working on her becoming slimmer!!!
Jennet Sutton the shorts is a great idea! I didn’t think about that. I usually do a line dresses because I like to hide my hips but if I ever brave a wiggle dress I will keep that in mind. Working on making mine smaller as well due to health problems. Good luck on both your health and sewing journey!
Lovely dress and the colour suits you so well. I found this video utterly fascinating even though I've never made anything in my life nor, to be honest, am I ever likely to. I hadn't realised at first that some of the flowers were ballerinas.
Thank you Pamela! I watch a lot of videos of people making different things I'll never make, like prop making or models, because I find it mesmerizing to watch even though I've never tried ti!
Another beautiful make. I love the way you styled the dress at the end, also. Thank you for the "lazy lapped zipper" instructions. Zippers are always my bane and least favorite part of the garment because I want it "just so". I think doing the zip the way you have will help me quite a bit. I also appreciate the you are curvy and have a bust size that is similar to my own. Many of the demos through YT are gals with a much smaller bust size, and generally---well, clothing just does _not_ look the same on a smaller bust. Not withstanding that it takes more fabric to cover DD bewbs, style-wise, it is often FAR different in the final product, which can be frustrating when envisioning a garment on oneself.
Even a knitter like moi can get some styling inspiration for when I create my own knitwear patterns. That gathered shoulder should be quite effective in hand knits, also! Thanks! PS You amaze me. How many things can one girl do with so much finesse? Write, voice overs, sew, style, design, pattern-make, research, collect, professional make-up, hair style, model...am I missing anything?
I love the green rayon you choose, and the shoulder detail you designed. It's a beautiful dress. As for making a muslin - when I skip making one I almost always regret that decision. But, in order to relieve the feeling that I am wasting my time by making one, sometimes I use a muslin that turned out well as the lining of the garment I am making.
I know it must be a LOT of work to film and edit each step of the process so thank you very much. I feel like I’m gaining the confidence to try new things by watching your project videos so please keep doing these - they’re brilliant!
Beautiful dress, I really liked how you put the zip in. I am new to sewing and got very confused with butterick/mccalls sewing patterns methood of putting in a zip. I have found your way very helpful. Thank you great video.
I think Donna needs a padded bra. Not sure it it would help but it’s a quick modification and easily removed. Poor Donna is but a 3D hanger. Love this video. Thanks
That dress is gorgeous/gorgeous on you! I actually love the color of the zipper and I think it gives it a nice touch. Just lovely. Great work as usual!
The dress is beautiful. I enjoyed this video very much, especially the drafting portion. You are so clear and concise in your directions. More videos like this please.
I sew like you do. I serge all my raw edges, and then sew the pieces together with my sewing machine. It takes longer, but I end up with a better finished garment, that can be easily altered if needed. Just remember to mark your construction notches with chalk, as serging will remove the original notches.
I've watched this video at least 10 times because this is the dress of my small scale dreams.. My friend is getting married at the end of the month and I think I'm going to attempt this dress for the wedding.
Very nice! Hope, you will continue, to make sewing related content...I love watching other people’s process in detail - especially if there’s drafting involved as well. Might be a good niche on RUclips even...I don’t think, there are many tutorials out there, on how to adapt a basic pattern for a vintage look. Sadly, a lot of people are quite irrationally afraid of pattern making...but it might still be worth a try, pushing in that direction a little, to grow your channel. Just my 2cents, of course 🙂
Thanks Rara! I'd say my sewing content is still is nowhere near as "popular" as a regular old haul, people still click on shopping related content far more for whatever reason! I have another sewing video coming next week though, and have many more planned, so more will be coming regardless :)
Thank you for letting us be a fly on the wall of your sewing room. I appreciate your candor and I can totally relate to your decision not change your zipper foot, use a perfectly matching zipper, purchase lighter interfacing, etc. The finished dress is stunning, I wouldn't guess that you took these shortcuts if you hadn't told us. Watching this will hopefully make me braver about moving my darts around and try other creative possibilities when I sew.
I'm trying to shop for a dress form so it's good to know that I should just give up on worrying about finding one that will fit my bust. DD cups make life challenging sometimes.
I was wondering if you could possibly do a video about how you sew your darts as they always look so nice and no matter how many darts I sew they never look quite right. I find that you always explain things in a way that I fully understand and it would be very interesting to hear you explain darts especially with your college background in sewing. This was a lovely video as always.
Thank you! I can certainly make a video all about darts sometime, I'll be sure to explain slower in my next video too, as I have another sewing project diary coming soon.
Watching you sew the darts, I think the tip would be that you sew off the fabrics point area & you don't do a back-stitch? This seems to eliminate that pucker we often get.... certainly worked for me.
It was been 20 yrs since my ttime in fashion design school; watching and listening to you drafting your pattern made me realize how much i have missed pattern making and how mych i used to love it. TYSM!

Oh wow. Love the color. The zipper looks perfect with the dress color. The pleating on the shoulder is great. This fits so well on you. I want to be as lazy as you because that would mean I had your talent too. Go forth and sew.
I still use your zipper method of stitching shut, then presing. I leave it shut while I sew in zip cos I am sooooo bad at zips. I baste first, then hand sew cos they always shift on me.
I love the pattern drafting. Going back and watching the pattern drafting videos!! It’s almost magic. Love it. Edited to say that the dress is beautiful.
This was very enjoyable, & although it's not intended as a tutorial, it holds great learning value nonetheless. I learned to (hand) sew from my grandmother before I started school & spent my childhood sewing for dolls. Textiles/sewing/design teachers at 80s high school focused on the rich kids (with their own sewing machines at home), or gifted kids. My 1st bad report was textiles/sewing, despite having sewn most of my life by then; *but* the absurdity of it scored me a fully reconditioned 1960s flatbed Singer for Christmas, so I could teach myself. People like you are the reason people like me can learn - we all learn differently, but people like me glean & collate bits of info from many sources, books, classes, tutorials, "not tutorials" etc & we practice; Sometimes you can read/hear the same quote over & over without quite getting it, but by watching someone else working the process through, the stored info finally makes sense. Well done & thanks.
Thank you Joanne! I always say people should check out used and refurbished machines at thrift shops or repair places because sewing machines haven't really changed too much in the last 100 years! Sure there are ones with fancy digital interfaces now and such, but a 60's straight stitch can still get the job done :)
The best part of your videos is when you turn your slopes into something different. That process is fascinating and why I keep watching. You make me feel like even I could do it! And, I never heard of putting interfacing anywhere near a zipper - but, it sure makes sense now that you told me why. Thanks. I’m off to my sewing room!
I had no idea how you were going to make the bodice, but I have learned so much from watching this video. I really need to get into sewing. I've been wanting to learn for years, but have never had the time or the money.
Thank you! For the early days learning technique I recommend thrifting for scrap fabric like sheets and stuff to practice with, and sometimes you can even find hardy machines too that just need a little oil or a simple fix :)
Thank you for enriching my life and vocabularly with "bustage" :P And you know, for the real-life walk through of your process, and demonstration knowledge and skill. That was most excellent tooooo.
How beautiful! And how unexpected to see your choice of black accessories which yielded a totally fantastic look. As you were sewing the dress, I was visualizing white, but the black is by far more classy and dramatic! Great job!
Thank you! I like the versatility of prints, I can see this dress paired with white too! I have a black straw hat with purple flowers though, so I'll probably wear it with that first :)
Well if I'm not making a sailor set as my second project for my exams then I'll definitely make something like this, so lovely, both on you and design wise.
I watched your videos here and there over the years but recently I saw your "learn pattern drafting" video and decided you were right. I honestly feel so defeated sometimes when I make something using a store bought pattern and it doesn't fit and I don't know where to go from there.. I am working on my own bodice block right now and after 6 mock ups I know I am almost there! Just been bingeing your videos and watching you manipulate your pattern is making more and more sense. Love your videos! When I am able to I plan to check out your patreon :D
A recent subscriber, and so delighted I've found you. I'm fully in agreement with Nancy Mandle's comments in that "I've learned so... so much" from your explanation's, and all else. Your tip regarding making up my own block pattern is 5x star. I intend to make the block my 'first step endeavour' into up-grading my sewing confidence & capabilities. Once again, thank you!
These videos have been the most helpful for explaining pattern drafting in a way that I can understand. By the end of your summer projects, I might feel comfortable enough to actually start sewing myself.
it turned out so lovely! i love the drape from one side and that fsbric is gorgeous...who wants a matchy zipper, that colour was perfect. tfs, i really enjoy the sewing
My thoughts: 1) You are a great teacher. I learn so much from you. 2) I love this dress design. Elegant and lovely. 3) That color green on you is perfection. 4) Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these sewing diary videos. I love them.
Such a wonderful dress I love this style! I just made my first sloper! My gold it is to do my own pattern! Thank you so much for sharing this! Christine 😎🇨🇦😎
This was so fun to watch! I’ve done FBAs before, but never this level of pattern altering, so I couldn’t figure out how you’d move the fullness elsewhere. Because I’m a nerd, I actually yelled, ‘OH WOW’ when you spread the pattern to cover the darts. I know this is a learnable skill, but also I think you might be a wizard?
I think something like this might be my new project - i love drapes, but never known how to get the right amount of them. This will be a fun try, but will definitely make a muslin first 🤗
The timing on this video was great just finished me sloper today can't want to start using it! You explain the flat pattern drafting so well and it makes so much sense. Thank you! Hope you can keep these videos coming. :)
When you slashed and spread I verbally said “Wohhhh awesome!” And had to explain to my SO that “Slash and Spread” was in fact a sewing term and not as grizzly as it sounded and I wasn’t in awe at something that was bloody 😅 Amazing job!!! I’m so inspired ! You’re pattern drafting videos are helping my save money by boosting my confidence at being able to draft some patterns as opposed to buying some. Thank you so much!
I adore that green fabric you chose for the project you made and the design is beautiful. I have a few vintage reproduction patterns from standard Vogue/Butterick/Simplicity dress pattern companies close in style to the inspirations for your design, but I’ve been terrified of attempting the dresses. Additionally, I have stacks of textiles, but nothing that has called me to begin cutting and sewing yet. But thank you for your video. Inspiring!
You did a great job with that dress, and don't worry. They're both informative, entertaining and helpful. And especially for us who need to adapt patterns no matter what we do :)
Enjoyed this video and learned some new and innovative shortcuts. This engaging tutorial was worth every minute. Your light sense of humor is charming. Thanks for your creative gifts.
I've only just recently discovered you. You inspire me to look for green fabric as well as getting motivated to make my own Block pattern. Amazing video and you look stunning.

Thank you Gail!
These videos have been the most helpful for explaining pattern drafting in a way that I can understand. By the end of your summer projects, I might feel comfortable enough to actually start sewing myself.
Thank you Chae!

A gorgeous dress. Thank you for another fantastic video. Really loved how you explained the moving of the darts as I was unaware of how that is done.
Thank you Carmen!

2) I love this dress design. Elegant and lovely.
3) That color green on you is perfection.
4) Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these sewing diary videos. I love them.
Thank you Heidi!
Thank you for all the detailed info. The dress looks fabulous and you look fabulous in it. Great job.
Thank you!
Oh my god, I didn’t realize there were really ballerinas in the print until, like, 45 minutes in. Very cute! 💚
Such a wonderful dress I love this style! I just made my first sloper! My gold it is to do my own pattern! Thank you so much for sharing this! Christine 😎🇨🇦😎
Thank you Christine!
I love this dress! Thanks also for explaining how to move the darts around to allow for a full bust but cool asymmetrical features!
Thank you Kelly!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pleating on the skirt!! I may just borrow that technique for the dress I have planned for September.......
Thank you Sarah! I just figured tossing a few pleats in was easiest ;)
Fabric and colour is absolutely gorgeous!! Great job!
Thank you Ronda!
Thank you Karyn! I am happy to teach wizardry anytime ;)
Thank you!
It was awesome seeing the logic that goes into all the adjustments for fit and design thanks!!!
Thank you Allee! It does sound a bit macabre indeed ;)
This dress came out so beautifully!!!
Thank you Charese!
Really beautiful dress. This color green looks amazing I you.
Thank you Kimberly!
Love the pattern drafting!
Thanks Carla!
Inspiring!
Thanks you! I have heaps of fabrics waiting for their day in the sun as well ;)
Love the dress and fabric. You are an excellent teacher. Hugs Donna ✂️👗👒
