      I agree, I can barely get a pair of pants hemmed in a timely manor let alone cut out the dress I've had the pattern and fabric sitting for months....

      Yeah... My thoughts exactly 😂 "I'm lazy and now I will sew by hand 100 km hem"
      I would never do that! Changing the foot is way faster in my opinion. Love your videos ❣️

    Would you do a video on making the original pattern block? I love how you explain it all!!

    • @billiev8705
      @billiev8705 5 лет назад +3

      I, erm, “third” this! I was just thinking if I knew how to make a sloper/basic block (and what the heck is the difference? Ease??) then I could probably manage drafting my own patterns (following your videos...). Your videos about changing patterns are the first that made me feel it’s doable!
      Also, if I could make a basic block, I would never have to worry about doing a full bust adjustment on EVERY DAMN THING.

    • @barbarakraner2040

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад +9

      I am planning to do so, I am just struggling with how to without plagiarizing the book I usually use myself to do so. Basically I follow the directions of my pattern drafting book to make slopers/blocks, so in showing you all how to make one, I would be outlining the same directions I follow from the book, which are not my own, but that of the book's authors. I can't quite work out how to navigate that, but I'll do it, I just hope showing the book is considered by the author/publishers as more of an endorsement/advertisement for buying the book rather than me ripping them off!

    • @billiev8705
      @billiev8705 5 лет назад +2

      TheClosetHistorian You could write to the publisher and ask - although most publishers or book web pages now how a “how to cite” section. I wpuld think if you put the name of the book (+ maybe a URL of where it can be bought) in the description, and you also explicitly mention/recommend the book in your video, you should be fine. But it never hurts to ask (or google) to be sure, of course.
      It’s been a while since college, and RUclips was not what it is today, so that’s all I remember from Academic Writing 101: cite your sources. 😂

    This is what I’ve taught my coworkers to think of as “lazy for good”.
    Does it save time without diminishing quality/durability? Great! Be lazy.
    Does it leave you more energy and patience for the things that really do require your effort? Great! Be lazy.
    And if you can teach someone an alternative way of doing something, that will make it so they actually do something they wouldn’t otherwise bother to do, that’s an achievement.

  • @raraavis7782
    @raraavis7782 5 лет назад +4

    Love this series!
    I just got rid of a gigantic stack of Burda magazines....collected over 20 or so years. Part of my pre-moving decluttering. Will have to make do without a sewing room in the future and decided to take the plunge and rely solely on drafting/draping in the future. Which I wanted to do for a long time....but of course, if you have so many ready made patterns to choose from, it’s hard to not take the easy way out and just use a pattern.
    So you definitely have my full attention, when it comes to pattern manipulation 🙂

    • @boccadice
      @boccadice 5 лет назад

      Rara, I always hated the flimsy tissue paper of commercial patterns - seemed like you could only use once and it would be almost unusable for the next time.

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 5 лет назад

      Sarah Chalmers
      You clearly aren’t familiar with the Burda magazine, are you? 😄
      Their pattern sheets look like this and are dreaded by everyone, who didn’t grew up with them, like I did:
      images.app.goo.gl/SNEhfhShSde5fxFc8
      So you gotta copy the whole shebang on a pattern paper of your choice anyway...I always used very sturdy translucent architects paper.
      But you get dozens of design with every issue...for the price of one conventional pattern, so it’s an amazing deal, if you sew a lot.

    I absolutely love this style. The gathered details may be a bit "camouflaged" in the fabric print but they still add to the details of the finished dress.

    Thank you! Your explanation of how to construct a kimono sleeve from a bodice block finally helped to connect the dots on how to do a small bust adjustment on that kind of sleeved bodice. Despite repeated searches, I've never been able to find a website that adequately explains it. Taking everything a little bit backwards, the bust dart is moved to the armscye, adding width to the sleeve at the bodice. To do a small bust adjustment then, one would have to reduce that same sleeve width all the way into the bodice, changing the angle of the side seam under the armpit at the same time to come inward a bit.

    The fit is amaaaaazing! Also, the pattern drafting videos are really helpful, actually! I'd love a video about the differences between a slope and a basic block, and how to make them!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you! The main difference between a sloper and a basic bodice block (I use the terms pretty interchangeably its true) is that a true sloper does not include any ease or seam allowance, it is literally supposed to be an exact "second skin" copy of the body or dress form. The block is different because some ease and the seam allowances are included instead. So that's the main difference as far as I know!

    Especially like the idea of the sash not being part of/sewn into the waist seam - allows you to make another in a coordinating color, or use a different color belt. Pure genius lady! Hmmmm - now I want to play with something that could make it truly removable - but I digress...

I always follow the directions from my favorite pattern drafting book, Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong, to draft my blocks. I suppose I will just frame it as a how-to-follow her instructions, almost like trying a tutorial or recipe, something in that line.

    Love your pattern manipulation videos! Thank you! The dress looks lovely on you, but I agree that the design is lost in the pattern of the fabric. More videos please!☺

    DESPERATELY waiting for a tutorial on how you make your little short sleeved suit jackets 😫🙌🏼

      Lilian Miramontes, Jr. Ooooh yes, I second that! I love the belted safari-style ones, and I always have trouble finding things like that. I work in different locations, some of which have no a/c, so I am always looking for short-sleeved jackets in a linen mix to wear to work in summer. It would be glorious if I could make them myself, because it's so hard to find things to fit just so.

      I'm doing one for my last August project (the "your" choice one I mentioned in my planning video) so no worries, it is coming! It will require a few extra steps, that pattern, having to create the princess seam and such, but it is on the schedule!

    Lazy? Nope. You’re very meticulous! Lazy is what I’d do: sketch out the pattern pieces directly on the pattern, cut, sew! That’s if it’s for myself of course, when I designed I did actually make “real” pattern pieces. You would laugh at all the clothing I’ve made this way, now used as pattern pieces after they “died”😆! You did a beautiful job, it came out perfect & looks gorgeous! Have a lovely weekend! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️
