Loved this video ❤️ im from Finland and to me its mindblowing to see what was available in 1940s in other parts of the world. We had some rough war years, and after war, we paid years war reparations/indemnents to Soviet Union, so here there were shortage about almost everything and finnish fashion during that time was mostly how you can mend old uniforms to suitable clothes for women and kids or shoes made out of paper, yes those were common here and they were so pretty but did not last very long. This made things that like my mama who was born 1943, and was youngest of three, never ever in her later life would wear "ugly" or used clothes or shoes and was very picky about her clothes. Now she is in caring home because of alzheimer and dont even speak for herself anymore, so i make sure that nurses dress and comb her hair nicely every day ❤️

Wow, the photo of the stylish African American woman in Detroit (at 7:38) is from my flickr page! It's a scan of a photo I picked up either at an estate sale or doing a house or storage locker cleanout! How cool to see it here in your video!
As a history major and fashion fan, I truly appreciate the historical influences on fashion, both in fabrication and style. Thank you for the informative and entertaining video!
I love how French women used fashion as a form of resistance against the Nazi occupation of their country. My friend's grandmother was French & was a teen during the Nazi occupation of France. She had been a zazou (a swing dance, rebellious teen subculture during WWII) & loved fashion. She used to tell how Hitler tried to police everything about women's fashion & he especially disliked the large hats French women favored (Freud would have a field day with that) & outlawed them, policing the hats to be only of a small size. He forgot to mention turbans, & French women jumped all over this - crafting & wearing elaborate, gravity-defying turbans in protest (that were stuffed with scraps, newspaper & their own hair - if it was long). She also said that due to a lack of traditional shoe materials, their shoes had wooden soles. When she & her friends would walk past Germans soldiers. they would "stomp" so that their wooden soles would clatter & drown out "their ugly Nazi voices".

I love fashions from 1939/1940 so much! It was a really interesting and innovative period of fashion. I have a small collection of vintage Simplicity patterns from these years and the pieces made up from them are some of my favorites! I love the whole decade though and it’s the one I come back to the most.

i could watch videos like this all day. One of my favorite subjects is the post war push to regain the feminine ideal after women had gained an awareness of their abilities and life that included roles outside of the gender norms of that time.

The clothes that these sourcebooks demonstrate are relatively good but they do not compare with the European clothes. They are of lower quality materials and they have less workmanship. They are not elegant, they are only useful.
The majority of the sourcebooks I mentioned are in fact featuring European and British fashions, so forgive me if your opinion on that doesn't hold much weight. As far as garments being "only useful", well yes, Utility clothing was the norm as there was a war going on and rationing (parts of Europe had rationing too you realize) guided the fashions of the day. But maybe you didn't actually watch the video to learn this information. I suggest you watch it so maybe you won't make another ignorant comment.

I find it difficult, living in the rainy Pacific Northwest, to identify how I can incorporate “vintage looks”into my daily fashions. Even office work, 2 days a week, is even more casual since Covid. Thoughts? How do you create a style that does not look like cos play? (Especially Hat accessories which I adore, but hats really aren’t done here..think hoodies instead. )

I wear a pair of high waisted pants and button up blouse to work every day. With vintage hair and makeup, it gives a very casual 1940s look.
