Zeekr 7X Driven - This Is Why Legacy Auto Is Running Scared

  • Zeekr's range is a real mixed bag with a large MPV, small SUV, C-segment saloon, and a shooting brake, but they've finally made something ordinary. The 7X is a svelte, mid-size SUV with class-leading levels of space, the world's fastest-charging battery technology, and genuine off-road capability.
It's also Zeekr's first truly global car, confirmed for deliveries into all global Zeekr markets in 2025, and on this evidence it's going to be a smash hit. "As comfortable as a Li Auto", said Mrs Inside China Auto. That's good enough for us.

I was in Minsk Belarus for the last couple weeks and saw my first Zeekr 7x and it really stood out, as a polished car, with a great paint appearance. The owner came out of the bank I was heading to and he noticed my close inspection of his car and encouraged me to open the door and sit in it. The feel and even smell of the car was really impressive. Since moving to St Petersburg Russia from my native California and being a former collector and restorer of older Italian GTs, at the peak had 36 restored 1950s-1976 Maserati, and various more utilitarian cars/trucks for the ranch. After moving from California where a car for each adult in the family was essential to live, and moving to a beautiful elegant city of St Petersburg with excellent public transportation and great subway system, I never got another car. I have been partial to Tesla after being a very modest early investor when the stock was $6.58/before the steep run up. I liked the idea and tech but still not so sure a personal car would have any benefit to my life in the city center of a stunning safe fascinating city my total cost of transportation every month for a very active social and cultural lifestyle is less than $50 including taxis when having a date. The first time however I started thinking about getting a car was 4 days ago when I got a 6 minute ride in the Zeekr. Every aspect of the ride and interior and quality of the paint and trim was impressive. That is high on my list of options if I get any car. It even smelled luxurious. It should scare the hell out of German brands.
The only problem with the Chinese options is the extreme speed they create new models and are no following a model year system so every day something interesting appears. The prices here, with the close ties between China and Russia will be rather attractive. A girlfriend got new compact SUV from Geely last year and for price and build/features it is an impressive affordable small SUV. I just do not see the same build and feature sets from Japanese, US, or European brands. The rate of innovation from China is far faster than other traditional car brands. The rise in build quality has been particularly impressive. That Zeekr I rode in was certainly more polished than any Mercedes Jag, or US brand.. The speed of innovation and refinement is far faster than the design cycles of any legacy brand.

Wow, power sunshades, instrument cluster and some physical controls makes me like this one a lot. It would have been nice to see the 001 Sports seats in this one. The interior space is really nice, rear seats like an ICE car with good thigh support. I like the motor setup on the rear, would have been good if Polestar used this on the Polestar 3 and 4, not sure why a "performance" brand didn't make their RWD car have a higher output motor. The air suspension version reminds me of my Audi etron, good height adjustment for offroad use and it seems like it should go lower for sport mode. This looks like a winner for Zeekr, something that most people are comfortable with, no loss of seating comfort due to raised floor, seems designed around passenger use. Great review. Will they have a track driving session for this vehicle? Would love to see how it performs there. Thanks for another great video.

Well, thank you for the work you put in here and happy Sunday to you. Must say, I kind of feel lost sometimes. Every time I tried to decide, what my possible next or rather first electric vehicle is going to be, some other video of some overall better or at least equal car is being introduced. Of course, not everything is coming to Europe or the US, but the fact these vehicles exist on some markets, makes the old car industry wobble. I understand why the US imposed a very high import tax on Chinese electric vehicles. They want to protect their own, which I totally understand. The sad part of it all is, they must have known what was coming. Cars these days on that scale dont just show up out of thin air. It is a long development cycle. Suppliers are put on notice, designers and technicians are being hired, factories are set up, etc. What makes me really mad is that the entire industry knew what was coming, yet they did little to nothing to countermeasure. Look at VW, trying to fire thousands of workers. Why, because they for the large part, ignored the market. Now they are running to the government asking for help to lay off 20 k people. And they will get it, that's what governments are for. But the ignorance of higher management is what I'm made about. Why did VW chose to bring less than mediocre EVs onto the market, when they could have done soooo much better. I don't know.
Anyways, I hope when I get back to the US in a few weeks time, there will be some EVs to buy for under 100k.

Excellent Review. I have looked at the car in Dongguan. Questions? What is the noise level in dB in the car, front seat, back seat? The audio system, Blue Tool or Jack Headphones in or ports? so as not distract the driver. Can I get 4 full sets of Golf Clubs the boot? What are the self-driving capabilities? It has Lidar, I believe the X does not have Lidar. Enjoyed your Video. My understanding is the ZEEKR is the high lever of car for Geely. I was leaning to buy the ZEEKR X, but the one I was in did not have Lidar. Maybe they will add it to the line.

Thanks for the questions. I'll try to answer as well as I can.
Noise levels: Don't know as I don't have that equipment but it wasn't ever loud.
Sound: Bluetooth headphones may well be possible, I've never really thought of that on a car without loads of screens. No modern car has jack cable sockets though that I'm aware of.
Golf clubs: I'm going to say yes. Can't prove it but it's plenty big enough so I see no reason why not. 616 litres I think I said in the video.
Lidar: standard on all variants of 7X and will have access to NZP by the end of the month, so autonomous city and highway driving. Haven't tested it yet but I will when I get chance. Not sure if that's subscription or one-time payment or included for free.

@@InsideChinaAuto Very good. I can take a golf driver to check myself. My other Chinese SUV's had 1 Bluetooth connection. So possible for at least one person in the SUV to hear the music. Today most people like their own music anyway. I was thinking more about movies. Do they have a spare tire now? I really wanted the ZEEKR X, but no Lidar on the roof. So I don't think it has good self-driving capability. It's just me and the wife here in China. So don't need a big car. I was driving a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. But got rid of it as she did not want to drive such a big SUV. The 7X is a little bigger than I wanted but should be OK. I will check them again. Thanks for your help.

Nio with it's ET5 Touring and EL6 know what Europeans want, but most Chinese manufacturers don't, and that even goes for Zeekr. That battery tech is pretty future proof in most of Australia. It will be ages before the chargers catch up.
2 years ago almost to the day, the WA government was boasting how it was going to spend $43.5 million on a network of 98 fast chargers at 49 sites. Initially the Gov said 50kW chargers but later Tritium said they were going to use their latest 75kW pile and hoped to have the network complete by mid 2024. Given the distances in WA, 75kW is a joke unless you want to spend all day sitting in the desert sun. It was almost as if the Gov thought anything over 7 or 11 kW was a fast charger and Tritium and Jet took the bureaucrats for fools... which maybe they were.

Given a Zeekr has never had a battery fire... probably longer than it'll take for you to comprehend that EVs catch fire 19 times less than ICE cars.

Indeed, I showed the ability in the off-road section of the video. They told us 230mm ground clearance, but since you can't drive it unloaded (you need a driver) maybe it'll only do 230 for real.

It's only an overpayment if you compare it to a Chinese price. If it comes in less than or even equal to a European rival, it's just business as usual and still a better car.
