I know this video is a few years old but you did a great job. For new viewers like me I have a couple of suggestions as I used to build leather car seats: cut pie slices out of the raw shape as you go. staple 4-6 or 8 sides then cut. this will eliminate the excessive wrinkling you are getting and make the job much easier on you and faster. Also, after you have finished stapling the vinyl or leather, there's a good chance you will still have wrinkles or small pleats. This can not be helped but you can remove them. Using a heat gun or a good hair dryer, slowly work the wrinkles out. using your hands to smooth out the remaining wrinkles. Take it slow! You don't want to melt or burn the material! It will be hot to the touch so you may want to use simple work gloves. Cotton gloves with no rubber gripping on them will work to protect you from the heat or mechanic gloves. Good luck on future projects!
Thank you. This was helpful.
I'm glad I found this video first from the sounds of it. I dont think I need to see anything else. Appreciate you taking the time to do this and show the rest of us. No need to over-professionalize anything. Just a normal guy trying to do a little more than normal stuff. Thanks again!
Thank you!
😊 ☝☝☝ Totally agree with the above comment. 40 yrs since I upholstered a stool and needed a refresher.. this did the job and covered all I needed. Thanks.
Yes! A good effort. But some of his staples are too close to the edge. He will have trouble when putting the bottom on.
You have the best video for rounded corners, all the others I looked at they leave the corners folded which don't look that great. Thanks for the information.
I agree with Bill's comment, this is an Excellent job you have done, better than most. I am actually attempting this on 3 bar stools today. I had a good idea of how to, but I checked some vids just to see if there were some pointers, obviously there are.
Amazing results. Best I’ve seen so far since I have started looking.
Thank you! I did a pretty good job on my bar stools. I wasn't perfect but you did a great job of teaching.
i find it helpful to make cuts in fabric/vinyl, it is gives it more ease, like making rays on a sun, then apply to round form
I'll let you know how the "rays of the sun" turns out when I get done .
Good vid... just a little tip. They make pliers that have a crescent shaped head. You grab the material and rock the pliers back on the hard substrate. This allows you to pull with incredible strength. I work with soaked leather so the chances of a rip are minimal but they definitely reduce wrinkles!
Very good.. thanks
Doing 2 stools tomorrow!!
Wonderful job
Thank you for posting and sharing! My bar stool covers are vinyl and my cats’ back claws have destroyed them. 🤦♀️ I’ve purchased two different new materials to see which one holds up better to the daily shenanigans! My stools are trapezoid in shape, but with your instructions, I think I’ll be able to do this!
Great video just what i needed to see to recover my round bar-stools for outside use.
Good job, I follow the instructions and mine came out decent.
I recommend using a hairdryer on the hottest setting to soften the leatherette. This allows you to stretch the creases out more before fixing it in place.
I have never done something like this, but I'm planning to. My idea is to divide the circumference into equal parts and draw lines from one side to the other thru the center point. Then, determine the diameter of the vinyl or cloth using a compass draw the circle, allowing enough to fold over and then be accurate while cutting the circumference. An then following the lines. Like a clock 12 to 6 and then 3 to 9 and so forth stapling opposites, the folds should the be consistent all the way around the diameter.
You’re good at this. Best video using faux leather. An electric stapler would make your job easier.
GREAT WORK
thanks for the video! About to tackle my own set of 4 barstools with a heavy vinyl and needed some guidance on the pulling and stretching process with such a thick fabric.
Great job and this is very helpful Thank you
Thanks very helpful 👍
Thanks! Great video
Good job and explanations.
This was perfect to me . You are definitely a perfectionist. 😂 but great job
I was thinking the same thing. It looks really nice.
Good job. Wouldn't a hair drier to heat the vinyl have helped with the smaller wrinkles? That is what I was looking for
Heat up the vinyl with a hairdryer it stretches to give you a smooth finish.
If you heat the leather with a hair dryer makes it much easier to work with no pulling or pulling staples out
If you use heater gun it will be much better when you pull the vinyl and staple. Try it
Great video. Very well done. Thanks for the help.
Excellent tutorial by far the very best! I just started reupholstering a barstool and having great difficulties with wrinkles until I found your video it’s coming out great now 😊 Thank you so much for sharing
Nice work. Thank you.
You saved my footstool
What type of Vinyl did you use. Trying to find and price it.
Liked, thanks. You can use a hair dryer to "mold" the vinyl.
My mother used an old iron with a wet cloth to remove the folds...
Brilliant, thank you
Using a heat gun also helps with the creases. Heating up the vinyl will allow you to stretch it better, however make sure not to overheat or the vinyl will change colour and the texture disappears.
I don't think he needs to stretch it? He has to much now. He needs a shrink er
I meant to get the wrinkles out instead of stapling everywhere.
How thick is the foam?? and the board?
Great job!! You're absolutely right on all accounts, regarding other videos for recovering a 'round stool' thanks!!
Thanks for a great video. Very clear and easy to follow. Visual clarity was good also. I appreciate the camera not bouncing around like so many you tubers do. I would not have known where to start but now I have the information i need. Good work!
Good vid, seems like warming it a bit with a hair dryer (or heat gun at more of a distance) as you go might make it a bit easier to work with as well, if it’s stiff vinyl.
Sometimes I wish I could ignore things like bunching and creases like some others do. When you are a perfectionist every little thing in your own work will bug you.
Great tutorial! Helped me a lot with a project I’m working on. Thank you 🙂
Thanks, help a lot.
A gallant effort, but I see where some Cordura might be easier for the DIY people (like me). That and I have made a mental note to never, EVER, buy round top stools any more. Bloody hell.
Hehe. Yes, they are a pain!
Pretty perfect to me : ) I hope mine turns out that good. I have 6 to do. 😣
Do you staple the black circle back on it too?
Nice thx sooooo much. It looks like a vanilla wafer. It's perfect
Thank you I am in the process of doing my chairs
You needed to have a dacron batting around the foam to preserve the durability of the faux leather. Another reason is that the batting will provide a filler to the creased areas so as to eliminate those creases. You're doing good nevertheless. It will also provide a smoother, softer finish. Sorry, you may get offended with my suggestion, but you can ask any professional upholster installer.
Great step-by-step instructions! Thank you!
Looks like a hamburger bun.
Ha!
Am I crazy or like….how’d you get the foam piece off the chair? Lol
Omg I happened to click on this first thank goodness and this is soooo helpful!! Thanks
Thanks Johnny! This “how to” video really came in handy. My husband, and I got our project done in 3 hours! Very helpful tutorial. Thank you.
this project done only for 10 mins with lamination ma'm this is so easy work thank you
This is precisely why I laugh when customers look shocked when I tell them that their 8 “only needs staples” dining chairs (that they also want re-foamed) will take 1-2 days and cost more then they think it should. One tiny barstool still took this gentleman half an hour WITHOUT needing new foam.
“It just needs staples and I’d do it myself but…..”
Go for it! 😂 And tell me how much YOUR time is worth lol
Bonus points if the wooden base is also rotted and they just want you to “re-use it”🤣
Working with Vinyl Tips and Tricks - Artisan Upholstery Studio
Was in the garage trying to put vinyl on a stool and said, "Forget this, I need help" and here you are! Great job, thanks so much for uploading this!
So are you still monitoring this 2017 video comments section? I discovered the base material of my kitchen stool is a piece of fine 'grain' particleboard. Have you any experience substituting it for more sturdy material? The hardware mounting screws were pulling out hunks of the old board as they became use over time and I am reluctant to simply use it again.
This looks much more informative than other videos I've seem. Very helpful. I have 3 stools I want to cover. After seeing this I feel better about trying this task. Thank you for making the video!
I have a suggestion, to make it smooth with no wrinkles use a hair dryer. to soften the fabrics. then pull it smooth. ( NOT TOO HOT.)
A perfectionist's life is so hard.
Not one video on youtube on how to repair a mid century round vinyl foot stool .. the stitches came apart on 1/2 of it.. there must be a way to repair it.. I 'll keep looking... Just crazy there are no videos on that
Great job on this video! Thank you!
You're right. Other video worse then your. Good job. 👍😊
Great job and if you wanted to you could get more of the wrinkles out once it’s been sat on for a while and moulded itself. Incidentally, the cover looks like a giant chocolate button 😋.
great one sir bus use proper equipment actully this is handmade stapler so and some wrinkles in that stool you are best in your work but same work as mine we use hit gun machine you'll use too hit gun machine make your rexine are leather smooth and finishing was too good in that equipment please try at once ill use regular my work is manufecturing dental chairs and opthal ent chairs operation bed or some kind upholestry work thank you giving this video i like it very much thank you sir
I know I'm good when I see results like this. I could of done that piece without any wrinkles on the edge. There is a technique that wasn't covered here.
Why not just leave old vinyl on if in good shape? We’re just refinishing to change color.
you re use too many stapler pins or waste it too much sir its only 10mins (project or work) but still youre great work reply me if youre agree with me. thank you dear sir
This really really helped thank you
Thats really good mate. I'm sitting on an uncomfortable stool now that's how I came across your video and will use it as a guide to cushion mine. Thank you
So your video is not better than those made by the women, though you are critical of them. All you needed was too post your tutorial without being critical of three others.
Thanks I found it helpful for my present project
How big was that piece of vinyl? And was that a 16in round?
I think I will buy an electric stapler for my project.
This was great. The only thing missing was the thickness of the foam (for those of us who want to replace ours.)
Try the best carpenters and woodworkers plans. Stodoys.
Thank you. Your video was very helpful!
Why are you afraid of the word "pliers"? The name of the tool is "needle nose pliers", not a "needle nose".
Hi. What is the blue cloth on table. See in a few woodworkers videos
Thanks alot! I have spent an hour watching videos after two failed attempts to get it done without wrinkles before I came across this one.. Great job at being so thorough!!
Thank you for watching!
@@Johnnysshop Epic, brother Johnny. You do good work. Rock on, brother.
Sir I message many times but you did not reply please contact me
Thank you for taking the time to show us! I just upholstered a stool and not too happy with the wrinkles. Can’t wait to do the other three the way you showed us.
When upholstering with vinyl, a heat gun will always make the finished work smooth. I'm an upholsterer by trade
Not the best video ive seen. If only i can find the one i watched years ago that one was the best
Thank u for your time mine didn’t come out that good so I’m re-doing it …
Thank you this was very helpful
Thank you for a great entertaining and informative video, some great tips
Sam
You really don't want to see my failed barstool
I agree with others on your good common sense and step-by-step good instructions. I just want to add that I really think it would be a benefit to replace the foam when it's that old. Upholstery foam is not made to last more than 7-10 years, depending on the original quality, and manufacturers are not likely to use the best quality. It would help to not only replace the foam, but to also add a layer of polyester batting for a nicer cushion.
Also am curious what to use to replace the thick paper-like covering typically found on the underside.
How do you replace the foam on chairs that have custom foam shapes?
The black on the back is called backing. Any upholstery store can help you pick the type you need.
Perfect video mine came out pretty good for my first time
But you are not saying it is very you will or leather
This is excellent. Thank you.
Why cant you cover over the vinyl thats there?
Very good info and technique
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for your video. I have an airless stapler and that worked great on a little kids table I reupholstered yesterday. Maybe I should video my DIY work too. Thanks bud
la traduction du titre en français est ... merdique 🤣😂
havent even watched the video yet but LOVE that you called out the other HORRIBLE videos. ALFA MALE RIGHT HERE.
You have great common sense! You are right...other videos are just drivel compared to yours. Thank you for taking the time to make this one. It is appreciated! 😀
How much fabric for each stool
I had done one sometime back. I am glad I viewed this for my second one. Clear, straight forward , just the right tools and well spoken. Kudos and thanks.
