- Todays episode is a real treat. James got this genset completely free if he could remove it from the building it was in. So now that it's home lets see if we can get it going. It was removed because it was putting coolant in the oil pan. Not sure what's wrong with it.

Even after 50 years that sound doesn't get old, absolute music to the ears! Those screaming 2 stroke Detroits 👍✌
Nothing better than the sound of a big 2 stroke
Wayne... thats my Word...love that freakin Detroit Engine Sound...😉😊
Screaming! ...... excuse me! They are singing bud. You better check your speakers. That's perfect harmony,
That is a big damn money to noise converter! Fun to hear those old dinosaurs run 👍
Hell yea we used almost 5 gal of fuel!
Y’all made my night ! “ Paul Bunyan’s Pipe wrench “ LOL! “Shmew in this side” ….” He did a BruceJenner” 🤣😂
Lol we have a pile of fun!
I worked on the 16v149 gen sets in the navy. I loved those things, especially when you grab a handful of the governor. They rev like a small block. Lol
It sounds awesome when you grab a handful of throttle. Id love to hear it rev without the load of the gen.
Holy Hanna they must of be something to hear roar , awesome 😎
@@skylarsoper241 indeed they are!
@@skylarsoper241 the 12v sound great but a 16v will make your brain melt. Lol
1,788 cubic inches of POWER. Now that's a motor right there.
All the cubes on a 2 stroke is all the power!
They must grow on trees for you lol.
Thanks for taking us along 🙏
Man I sure wish they did!
The thing to be mindful of when revving the guts out, that still has a huge alternator on it that may not respond well to way high revs.
Considered that. But it'd make for better video if it came apart spectacularly. Lol
Why rev it? It was designed to run @1800 rpm and sounds best above 1400 where it REALLY starts to sing anyway. Personal opinion, but I'd rather listen to 1800 rpms running steady than needless revving through the idle speed. Bumping the throttle around the idle mark sounds great on a Harley, but I don't get any thrill hovering around Idle speed. My two cents and it's worth about that!
@@W1RMD I was thinking this was either a 6 or 8 pole alternator for 1200 or 900 RPM... I don't think the big ones ran that fast. Learn something new every day.
@@kleetus92 i was thinking 1200 also. i quickly looked up specs. on google
@@kleetus92 1800rpm = 60hz, just recently serviced one of these. Plenty of big gens run that fast.
Yet another 2 stroke comes roaring back to life, love !! Lots of cool old trucks there too.
Tons of old trucks to fire up!
That was sick especially the sparks flying out the turbo, that thing is pretty clean looking also. hell yea
I loved the sparks flying!
"Mexican all 16ths wrench" Pure gold LOL
Nice addition man 👍🏻. Love when you and James are together he seems like an awesome dude.
Yea Vinny we have a ton of fun.
Awesome running engine. Interesting that one starter managed to get enough cranking speed to get the engine going as this generator has two starters and often 2 x 24 Volts battery banks are needed for a quick start.
Great video. I will forever love the sound of those engines when running! And I caught the cheeky remark about my buddy @BruceWilson. Keep up the good work...
Lol I watch him too. He always lets the sparks out of the batteries! Lol
That turbo spool sounds on those Detroit's never gets old nice video 👍
I love that sound!
QUAD turbos. You don't see that often.
What a beast. Sounded awesome. Great episode.
Thanks Stewart!
That has to go on a truck! I would love to see a project like that!
I think it'd be wild
That would be a serious project stuffing that in a truck. You'd need one hell of a ass end counterweight too.
@@okgroomer1966 that's what I'm saying... If you can even get it between the rails
@@Ol2Stroker be easier to build a custom truck I think. Would definitely be awesome though. Or perhaps a bed mount in a old 5ton.
The BIG BUD 747 has the same engine believe it or not
So thats 29.3 litres? Damn what a fine piece of an engine
Hard to believe somebody would just give something like that away. Not sure exactly what I would use it for next but she runs like a dream and I see a ton of value to her. Thanks Wayne another great video kind of wish I lived a little closer I'd like to meet up with you and your Padre all seem like a bunch of genuine fun to be around cutting on each other kind of guys. Thanks again!
We have a blast chip and we love to meet new people!
Working on those old Detroits was one of life's highlights❤
I work at a power plant as their equipment mechanic and we have two of those, one for each unit. They are the backup generators for if the power goes out they provide the power to get the units back up and running. I mostly just service them once a year. They are supposed to be test ran every sun. They are original to the plant that was built in 1975 and have between 1,500 and 2,000 hrs. each.
That's awesome Luke!
Any unique suggestions they dont put in the manual ? Like, tips to make any service easier or parts last longer for the 149 series
Man I got morning coffee and you guy's raising hell with that old generator . What a way to start my day , thank's for the laughs 🤣😂👍👍🇺🇸
Thanks for watching Jimmy!
What an absolute frikkin symphony! Top job guys!❤️❤️
Hell yea!
149 series, the backbone of mining for decades
We used to have these in Electrahaul mine trucks. They turned big DC generators and blowers to propel 65 ton trucks carrying 100 tons of rock up a 12% grade. Ours held 30 gallons of oil IIRC and the add mark was add 3 gallons. Twin 6V149's mated on a common crank. To see if one of the banks of 3 cylinders wasn't firing right we sprayed cheap white spray pain on the cold exhaust manifolds and fire it up. If one was slow burning off the paint that was the bad one. Ours used air starters, not electric. About 1100 HP to the electric wheel motors.
That's awesome Rich! Had to be cool to see one in action
Another addition to the fleet of 16 V 149 for Wayne or James sounds great. Was wondering if the other two turbos were seized cause of the water in the exhaust. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Wayne and crew.
Yea Richard that's what I was thinking too
@@Ol2Stroker it shows how durable these engines are they still have compression like a monster even with water and possibly corrosion damage to the values.
If the turbos are seized from water in the exhaust you can probably get them going with evaporust
Hey bud the water in the oil is most likely the oil cooler that’s a very common problem with those 149’s where the oil cooler it self mounts and seals in the housings usually rust out and let water and oil mix when we do engine tear downs we usually send the housings off to be inserted where they like to rust out. Thing sounds mint though keep up the great work buddy.
I love that sound. I had a pair of NT-7-12-71Ts' in my 62' Hatteras. V12s are magical.they sound awesome.
Oh man I bet that sounds amazing motoring along
I can't even guess what that rig cost but MAN! It's James' now for the cost of getting her home...whatta deal! There's gotta be something awesome you could stuff that baby in......
Fix it up and sell it - it can power equipment in a quarry. Or your whole house with everything turned on and the A/C blasting.
Not sure what the plan is now but it's cool to know it runs!
One of my favourite Detroits,149's rule.
Never got to mess with one till now. I'd like to dig in and fix it!
Dual starters need special wiring to sequence operation. ( This assumes that dual starters are used to provide enough cranking power Vs dual starters in order to provide backup in case one fails. )
When power is applied to " start " , starter 1 solenoid pulls the drive in however power is not applied to motor 1. Starter 2 then receives a trigger that pulls the drive in and power is applied to motor 2. A trigger is then sent from Starter 2 to starter 1 to apply power to motor 1 .
This is done to prevent gear clash if one starter is spinning and the other is trying to engage.
Awesome comment Rob I was wondering how that would work. I'm thinking these were backup setup since one starter turned it fine.
Bad Ass video we had one of those on a drilling rig years ago. Every time we had a connection my old man rev the engine up. Brings back fond memories
That's awesome!!!
I can't believe that was free. Hopefully the genset works. If not it's a few grand in scrap windings for beer.
He got super lucky with that deal!
Sounds a lil weird to me, but I’m used to being next to a 16V92 875kW genset going full rated RPM. Barely a change in tone under full load! Loved watching the massive starter power wires jump when it started!
I got a free 12V-149 a few years ago from a crusher in Rock Springs Wyoming & it was also putting water in the oil. It ended up being an oil cooler leak & an easy fix.
Interesting the smaller series don't do that.
Starting the Saturday overhere in The Netherlands with the Speakers at Runawaymode with that Detroit.... Fantastic...
This is a true monster how great would it be to find the 'faulty parts' and inframe them and it's good as new. (Most expensive Genny there is tho fuel and oil)
Keep up the great Content!
Greetz
Thanks brother! Not sure what the plan is for it yet.
My father used to service and rebuild these for mining trucks in the late 70’s. We still have a piston from one.
Awesome!
Now that's a true monster 149 cubes per cylinder! Damn !
1800 cubes , what a monster. There’s got to be a P16 Pacific needing that motor somewhere.
A Pacific would be so rad!
WOW!! What a BEAST!!! That's incredible!!!
It's so big in person!
Used to drive an old Hayes hdx 1000 that had that exact sweet ass Detroit in it such a beast 500 + hp 45 mph awesome old wood wagon
That's awesome Skylar!
You ought to take a trip to the USS Slater in Albany, Wayne. It has GM Cleveland two strokers on it. A friend who was in the Navy, and also worked down at Alco and D&H Colonie Locomotive Shops was rebuilding them before he passed away. You'd be in 2 stroke heaven.
That'd be cool Brian, I'd go if they'd fire em up.
@@Ol2Stroker I was there a couple of times. My friend was going to rebuild the main engines when he got sick. He rebuilt a couple of the auxiliary diesels.

Ha ha, very true, I like that, son of a Detroit.
Me too I dig that saying! James is the lucky one today this one's his.
Wayne good meeting you at Macungie the other day. Great video keep up the good work I see a couple nice old semi sitting back there in the video. Maybe should do a will start on them?
Those have all run semi recently but there's plenty more we can get going
James took a oil and water bath LOL! YOU GUYS ARE A RIOT !
Lol yea he did! Thanks Rex!
Ta hell with rolling blackouts! Brewskeys and a bigass Detroit. Thanks dude
Absolutely Henry we've got the cure!
If that gen-head is good, you might be able to sell it for enough to fill that big ass crankcase 5 or 6 times! What a monster.. I don't think you were revving as high as you think. You oughta get a hand-held rev counter and stick some tape on the crank pulley to see where it's at. Pretty sure the limiter on those governors are set around 1900 rpm max and 1800 normal duty rpm.. (Unless you were pulling on the rack itself).😂 It sure sounded sweet once you blew all the bats and bird nests out of it.😉
I have one I just didn't bring it for this adventure
Nice. Something blew out of the exhaust at 19:50, some kind of ring-shaped thing. Wonder what it was?
Optional is what it was 🤣🤣🤣
Looks like some type of rubber gasket. Might have been from one of the air filter housings and was placed in or around that exhaust.
1,788 cubic inches, THIRTY LITERS of FUN !!!!!!! Yippeee !!
She's a big girl!
Looks brand new!
I would love that in my garage 🥰 love the sound👌
Sounds awesome in person too!
Next week, an EMD 645 on a rail car appears...Primo stuff, Pretty givin' it the full how-dare-you whilst standing in the breach, yessuh.
Hell yea I'd run an EMD if they'd let me!
I've seen a Massey 1080 tractor sparking like that. It set it's load of straw on fire. Saved the tractor but the trailer frame was twisted badly from the heat. They put a spark arrest on it's exhaust but after a year it fired another trailer. They were big old 40 foot converted semi trailers twisted to hell.
Oh wow I bet that'd be a problem
Why did sparks shot out of the one exhaust pipe? And that thing sounds beautiful
the other pipe was full of water and that put out most of the burning carbon
@@wdixon27 thank you for the info
Just burning Carbon, other side was wet good question.
Wayne, when I heard this engine run, my first thought was Drag Truck. If you could find a Truck big enough for it, that would be unbeatable. What sort of BHP would that put out
Im not sure tbh. A bunch
What a monster of a engine way over built ✌️
It's so big in person
Did you guys do anything to make sure the generator side couldn't arc and kill someone?
Nah. Lol
A Crackerbox and and Astro together. Kind of hard to believe that GMC went from one to the other in one model year.
I seen the sparks down low too! Dunno what they could be. I guess the sparks out the exhaust were from the turbos? Thought I seen some sparks when you stuck the camera in the turbo inlet area.
That dirty old girl needs a date with the pressure washer now...
Dan yea she's a little filthy now lol. Sparks were just burning Carbon and I think the water in the other side kept it from doing the same
"that thing ratchets, it'll be fine"
And that kids, is how I got backwards fingers and false teeth.
Put that in the old greyhound buss . 700 rpm will move it down the highway at 70 all day long .
Lol probably makes more power at idle than anything I have wide open!
Hell ya ! What’s up Wayne,James that baby purrrrrs
🤟🤟 thanks Ken
Awesome Video. I really need to get my hands on a Detroit Powered something. I’m kinda looking for an old Lincoln Welder that came with a Detroit Diesel. That’s a big old girl, need to jam one of those monsters in a truck. Thanks for the videos. Always a Treat, Wayne.
Absolutely Douglas you need one!
That cool old crackerbox grain truck and what looks like an Astro catch my eye
Yea he's got some cool stuff!
I see that in a long nose brockway by next week…be on the lookout for some jake heads! Lol
I dealt with EMDs that took maybe 650 gallons
That sounds awesome this would be a perfect engine for a M4A4 sherman tank it would probably be quick too this probably atleast has 600hp
Good luck getting that to fit. Lol
There's no room in a Sherman for one of these. You could put one in a Patton or T55 maybe
550kw is insane! People have no idea what kind of equipment they just give away😂

I would love to build something along the lines of pissed off Pete with a big two-stroke in it. What would be a good unloved truck to look for to score an engine cheap? I would think I'd probably want a 12 just for coolness Factor.
A truck v12 isn't going to come cheap. Especially if it's in a truck.
@@Ol2Stroker so what would a good option be? I really don't know a ton about them. Biggest stuff I own are international busses. A dta360 s1853 and a re3000 t444e. How about old your bus endines? I guess most of them are 6 or 8V engines? I'm just thinking whatever I can get that will donate as much driveline as possible with a manual trans and maybe a straight front axle.
A old clapped out fire truck perhaps. They're usually low hour engine's too. No clue what they cost but they're around in auto traders now and then.

Don't forget 12V-149TIB and The TI's and TIB's are usually higher in HP/KW

You know the phillips screwdriver trick for terminals, right?
The what now?
@@Ol2Stroker If you have marginal connections with clamp on terminals, and you don't have a wrench to tighten them down, or can't clean them... Take your like #2 phillips screwdriver and put the point at the interface between the post and the terminal and give it a whack with your hand, hammer, rock, beer, whatever so you have a star pattern. do that in 2 or 3 places around the top, and you'll get pretty decent connectivity where the blade deformed both the post and the terminal.

Just imagine being on the crew that made that first engine, not knowing if its going to stay together or just go to the moon. As big as it is, just imagine how damn big some are that the military have an how many hours they school guys to run one for a gen set. It most likely will make enough electricity to run a whole town... "wife says can we use it to go camping" or this would terrify a whole community by taking it somewhere, getting a sound system like the large concerts use to power the sound for few acre concert.... All systems a go, fire that engine up and funnel the sound down some canyon to a town! People would know its the end of time... Not a chance in hell there is a driveline that may hold this kind of power as its equivalent to a hydro dam power for some small city or large town.. way to go
Thanks Morgan I'm super curious if we could get it in a truck.
@@Ol2Stroker I do know that Scott Paper log inc., did some off highway logging, they shut down their train system an did the Hays logging trucks.... canadian made, got the name spelled wrong, any way.... they put two twelve one tens in a row (12/110) bolted back to back so that powered the truck and trailer which had reach hook ups for the next set and what it was ... was four long log loads behind one truck.... they had their own road, flat as a turd, one way each way so that they just went roundy round and made two trips a day times about ten trucks getting loaded in the woods, and this was a high production set up that lasted two or three years... All those trucks were just worn out from the enormous weights that they packed. Each load on the truck and trailer an more were equivalent to four legal highway loads... Just imagine that weight.. wet days they found out quick where the soft spots were in their roads as they would go along an then just tip over from weight and height. Not many got hurt as it kinda was a slow motion thing but no stopping one when it started. This is the funny part... their mill was across the highway and so out of the woods they came then stopped traffic so the train could go through... this is late fifties for prospective, anyway after a couple months that highway had a huge dip in it so they built a overpass which is no small feat, did it with timber and not cement. One fine day a truck fell through... what a mess as everyone went to look at this mess... they did rebuild an stronger which held till it started failing, that was the end of the train as they were down to like two or three truck trains. Almost all was scrapped and it was good riddance as those new rigs turned to shit and were just misérible to get into.,
