I love you more than anyone
Should ever be allowed to love anyone or anything
    (Anyone or anything)
& I need you more than anyone
Should ever be allowed to need anyone or anything
    (Anyone or anything)
So darling, please don't ever break my heart
I beg you, please don't ever make us part
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
& I'd die (backup singers sing title 4 times)
I would cry more than anyone
Should ever be allowed to cry over anyone or anything
    (Anyone or anything)
So please love me more than anyone
Should ever be allowed to love anyone or anything
    (Anyone or anything)
Oh darling, on my knees I'm begging you
I'm pleading, please love me as I love you
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
& I'd die (backup singers sing title 4 times)
    Don't ever make me weep
Oh darling, on my knees I'm begging you
I'm pleading, please love me as I love you
'Cause without you I'd be a little lost sheep
    & I'd die

I interviewed co-writer Mickey Gentile in 2012 for the liner notes accompanying the Mary Wells 20th Century Fox compilation. Burt Bacharach asked Gentile to come up with a track to fill a then upcoming Dionne Warwick album. Mickey cut the demo with sister Dee Dee Warwick on vocals. However on an office visit Mary heard the demo, snatched it off the turntable and placed it in her purse! Right in front of Mickey and his wife, co-writer Jeanne Lambert. Ah if only this got to Dionne....

Nice comments Kev. Dionne would have killed it, though very beautiful rendition by Mary with Andantes on 3 part backgrounds.

@@legendarymcdinis3391 Hey thanks for the compliment! Thing is Mary cut the song in Los Angeles with Windy City producer (and then-paramour!) Carl Davis manning the boards.

My bad Kev. Who do you suppose are background singers?

I’ve always thought that Mary’s curse for leaving Motown could have been remedied by a really strong record label and moreover by a much better promotion team. This record is really quite good! (…and so was some of her other forgotten post-Motown material.).

20th Century Fox Records president Morty Craft dangled a half million dollars in front of Mary with a promise of movie roles on top of record promotion. The label just wasn't equipped to complete with the hustle and bustle of Motown and other strong Indies.

It was NOT a curse. Not every decision works out. So glad she made the gamble..

@@PapaEli-pz8ff In my description above, I was obviously writing figuratively. It’s no secret that Mary and Gordy went through an array of legal battles. She was never again to enjoy the success of her Motown years.

This record and song is very good and Mary Wells has done awesome job recording it and totally different from her Motown recordings sounds It is in my opinion it should had been a big hit for her but the big fans wasn't use to this different style of music and of a course not being at motown plus this was something very similar that fit better with somebody like Dionne Warwick who was singing very similar type of music at that time who was doing quite well with this type of music. Not to say Mary Wells didn't do a very good job with this record because she really did but I don't think the fans were ready for this complete change in music and not being at motown to continue recording the motown recordings sounds.

Mary was very versatile in music selections. She never stayed in a box.
