  • This video features a damaged strut replacement on a 2011 Chevy Impala LTZ. It also covers how to diagnose the sounds that the struts make when they need to be replaced, during a live road test and some of the stages of removal and installation. I'll also explain what shocks are, how they work, how much they cost, how much you can expect to pay in mechanic labour and other relevant issues related to struts. Everything in this how-to video is broadly applicable to most vehicles using the same basic suspension technology so you can apply the lessons learned here to many other cars of similar construction.

Did you have high speed vibration (highway speeds)? All my suspension looks good and tight, but I notice a lot of rust on top of strut... I get thunking sounds too on bumps from that vicinity...

I guess it didn't occur to me to do that type of test because I first became aware I needed to change my struts due to low speed clunking so that's what I was trying to replicate. But you make a good point. If I do another video on this in the future I'll include that in the diagnostic portion. Thanks

Is that a size 18 strut

I selected the strut by part number, according to car model (looked it up on Rock Auto) so I don't know if there's a size designation as such. It might be risky to buy based on any criteria other than OEM P/N.
