(Pt 2) Honda Dealer Made it WORSE!? "Needs New ENGINE?!" (Accord VCM MISFIRE)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- Now that we have a good understanding of the VCM Cylinder Deactivation System, it is clear that this Honda Accord V6 has 2 SEPARATE ISSUES:
1) Slightly low compression on Cylinders 5 and 6.
2) P3497 Caused by a VCM Malfunction that Permanently disables Cylinder 4
Let's double-check the valve clearances on the Front Bank...did the Dealer do a proper job adjusting the Valve Clearances?
Then we'll attack the Cylinder 4 VCM problem...Dealer apparently already replaced the VCM SOLENOID on Cylinder 4....hmmmm

If I was a dealer service manager . I would play these videos at weekly tech meetings. These are free educational videos. I don't work in the auto industry but I've learned so much watching Ivan andSMA.
The only problem is that assumes the SM cares about making service better; most of them are rated on tickets written and revenue generated, customer be darned.
I saw this on Wikipedia and it made me laugh: "When the VCM system disables cylinders, ... Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) pumps an opposite-phase sound through the audio speakers to reduce cabin noise,"
Those rear brake caliper bolts have a washer that goes between the caliper bracket and the spindle, I think it's a shim. It falls behind the rotor when you install the caliper if you don't know it's there. Don't ask me how I know.
This is a great video series on this system. Well done, Ivan. There is a service bulletin for those front spool valves for oil leakage onto the alternator. The bulletin specifies to replace the spool valve and both gaskets. You still have to buy the entire unit with the base but the bulletin actually says to remove the top half from the new spool valve and toss out the base. So, you just replace the valve, the separator plate and the two gaskets. Also, I've been told that if they're not installed and torqued properly it can twist the valve and the plunger inside can hang up. Don't use aftermarket on these. It doesn't usually end well.
Eric O ran into this same situation. Aftermarket junk. That pintle had something wrong with it.
I'd be beyond upset if that part turned out to be aftermarket.
@@kerrylewis2581 It happens all the time. I know I deal with it on the daily.
Ivan that soot mustache made you look like that guy who's name we cannot mention.
🥸😂
Joe Biden?
@@pingpong9656
"Joe Biden?" You mean the one from Brandon Falls, Md? . . . No. it's not that guy. Guess again.
Ha ! The washer goes between the caliper bracket and the knuckle !
Seems the customer didn't get a very good brake job either....
Had this exact problem on my 2010 accord 3.5. Cyl 6. Turns out the piston rings are garbage and it kept fouling plugs because of oil blow by. Put a new plug in it and traded it in. No more hondas for me after that. Low tension piston rings combined with vcm cylinder deactivation is a disaster. These engines were a mistake if you ask me. Had plenty of power but was never smooth especially when cylinder deactivation went on and off. I kept getting cyl 6 misfire codes and had to drive with spare tools and spare plugs in the trunk. Only had 60k miles on it too!
The old J series are great in my opinion, but when they went to VCM that was a big no no for me. They can all be made reliable, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. What you might call a mechanics dream, or mechanics nightmare, depending on your perspective.
@@jtjones4727 just some extra info. I went online and found out how to deativate the vcm system. Unfortunately that turns the check engine light on and so i wouldnt pass state inspection. Also i was going thru a quart of oil every 500 miles. Imagine the damage to the converters. Thats why i traded it in
@@JameyPetitVCM Tuner doesn't turn on the check engine light but does disable VCM. No oil burning for me or plug fouling for me, 2011 Odyssey with 175k miles.
So i was watching part one at work during lunch yesterday. Then wouldn't you know it? I get a Pilot with the same symptoms amd same engine. But this had 190k plus miles. So 1st thing I found was total trim was -40%. Cleaned m.a.f. Dropped to -14%. So that was one problem. Checked all sensors, fuel pressure etc. Found nothing wrong with any inputs. But did find valve adjustment off and Autolite spark plugs. Which is a big no for Japanese engines. Adjusted valves, replaced spark plugs with NGK's and installed a new M.A.F. Smooth as butter. These things are difficult to diagnose with so many reasons that the engine could misfire.
@@edwinlomonaco6754 interesting! What year Pilot? All the older Hondas like this one had MAP engines 🙂
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 2014 Honda Pilot.
If only it was a German car with that mustache 😂
😂😂
And please remember, that Ivan is from the eastern part of the world :-)
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Ivan you looked so Aryan
LMAO, the stache had me cracking up dude
Ivan I could feel the frustration in this video and I can see how you are getting more cynical and sarcastic as time goes (and rightly so), because of all the B.S. that people are doing out there... You are an amazing technician and you are stuck in a world of morons. Good job on keeping a level head and sticking to "what you know" and "proving the truth" so that you make the right call. It hasn't gone un-noticed. I spent a lot of time in my dad's shop before he passed away (72 from Cancer) and I was his "electrical wizard" that would take the time like you do to figure out these difficult problems. That's not to say he wasn't an amazing mechanic because he was but he was better suited for the mechanical area because that is what he grew up in as his time as a Mechanic whereas I came to work with him when electronic control was just starting to become really complicated in vehicles and I understood it more in depth than he did. So I totally get what you go through and it's why I love watching your videos. I'm re-living the world I once worked in through your videos. I'm now in a wheelchair due to an unfortunate accident a few years ago and I'm mostly paralyzed from the waist down. If it wasn't for your videos I wouldn't still be able to enjoy this world of complicated electrical diagnosis. Cheers, and thank you for what you do.
Those plastic injector caps can be a nightmare. Working on some of my classic Honda's from the late 90's, I've had every one of those plastic caps get stuck and break off into the hole when trying to remove the injectors. I've had to pull the entire intake off on some of the F series before just to clean all the broken plastic out of the hole's so I could replace some injectors. Also I love the OTC fuel injector pulse tester, but I have learned to be very careful with that tool. The first one I bought a couple years back, the first time I used it on my Honda, I did the first 2 injectors no problem, then I forgot to unhook it from the battery and went to hook it up to the 3rd injector, and the 2 wires very briefly arced together, and that was it, it never worked again. So I had to drop another 130 dollars for a second one, but I am very careful with that thing now.
Did the same thing myself. If you take it apart you'll see the burnt trace, easy to repair
Good morning Ivan cant wait for part 3
That washer looks exactly like the spacer washer that sits behind the caliper, where the bolts go through
Since its just a solenoid you could perhaps measure voltage and current with a scope and see the pintle movement...catch the pintle and see if it sticks...just like a fuelinjector.
Ivan, someone dropped the rear caliper bracket alignment shim when reinstalling the caliper. This is another reason I favor Toyota engineering--too many complex solutions to simple problems. The caliper will be misaligned. That mustache was a foreshadowing of the German influence on the engineering.
My thots to. Ivan is infinitely nicer than the German mustache man.
Thanks for this upload.
I would trust you on my cars anyday Sir! :) I've been watching the jobs you do for a long time and you never cease to impress me.
Weird job, Ivan! You keep solving problems created by previous shops and it's quite possible that the solenoid is not closing tight - should be a warranty claim, I guess. Very curious about Part 3!
$800 labor to change something that takes 15 minutes at the most, plus $300 odd dollars for a non genuine part. That Stealership should be sued. Did they only change the valve and not the solenoid? They seemed to have cut corners to maximise profits on that Honda.
.. they make a deactivator for that system, i'd install it .. saw a guy put one in on RUclips, just a plug in deal in a circuit ..
Don’t know about Honda, but the make them for GM that just plug into the diag. port. They don’t cause the money light to come on and don’t show up in the computer, which is a plus if you would ever have any warranty issues. I put one on my wife’s GM a couple years ago and it works great.
That washer/shim thing looks like an anti rattle spring goes through it !
Ivan is still MAGA: Making Automobiles Great Again 🇺🇸😉🇺🇸
NEW stands for "Never Ever Worked"! Thanks Ivan!
Rear caliper bracket bolt washer. It inserts into the rear knuckle
I'm surprised there is nothing designating Honda on that front spool valve. I wish the original part was in the trunk and would like to know if the same problem prompted the replacement.
Was wondering if there were honda markings on it as well
It looks like the fastener that some manufacturers use hold the rotor on that no one ever puts back.
That's exactly what it is. Just did new rotors and pads on my 2011 Odyssey and it uses the same shim/washer on the rear caliper brackets. They press in and clip but not firmly so you have to ensure they've stayed in place before reinstalling the caliper.
The service data said that 4 cylinder mode is only activated at highway speeds. Probably above 65mph. Eric-O found out that the pintel on the aftermarket solenoids were too soft and letting oil bleed by. He lightly sanded the groove it wore into the pintel and it started to work again while he sourced a genuine OEM part.
I have to wonder if they know that with the amount of extra rubber and plastic garbage they use to manufacture this junk that they are doing absolutely nothing for the environment with the few drops of fuel that this technology MIGHT save. Not to mention the money, time, and all-out inconvenience it costs the consumer.
Agreed.
Manufacturers are under massive regulatory pressure to reduce emissions, even small gains are important to them when applied to total production.
Dealers are part replacement central, They can't diagnose anything anymore. They blast the parts cannon at you and charge you accordingly.Whether or not the complaint is fixed. People should refuse to pay just because they spend the time and parts. If they didn't complete the job it didn't do any good.
Ivan, Old School CLT test would be my GO to. I just need to rule all Mechanical on #6. I suspect a Exhaust Valve. I'm a ole fart.
Vcm system is more trouble then it’s worth, just do “vcm delete” with SVCM Controller.
I love how my Tundra ALWAYS runs on all 8 cylinders all the time. Yes, its tas thirsty but tbis Honda owner spent 5k on repairs...that buys a lot of gas. The sound of a v8 is amazing.
VCM(cylinder deactivation) delete ! ! In the owner's area can he still pass inspection if deleted?
Washer goes on the caliper bolt.
Spool valve from the dealer is sold as the entire assembly and the valve train has to be removed in order to install hence 3 hour labor.
Heil Ivan! ( moustache ) I think just a small amount of a foreign material or that lower gasket for the spool valve. I would also quote rebuild kit for the injectors to replace o-rings and caps.
First thought why not an in cylinder comp test
Based on the cylinder leak-down test performed earlier, the compression should be fine.
Eric @SMA had a pindle problem video some time ago. Where an aftermarket solonoid was the culprit. If I remember correctly.
Wow, the spool valve is like a mini valve body like an automatic transmission. You could be an ace automatic transmission tech if you wanted.
Oh wow, we got uh…(can’t say that on RUclips)…little mustache 🤣🤣🤣
The little elephant is ganesh, he will protect you 😆
Engineers continue to make things so complicated that even the Honda Dealer Mechnics are lost. I bought a 93 1.8L corolla in 2003 that lasted over 500K miles...never had Engine issues. Bring back the basic Engine...just damn.
As a shop owner for 45 years, the one thing I hate the most is a flat rating mechanic. In my shop if a customer pays for a part, we install the complete part! Maybe the mechanicl part of the spool valve was fine but they charged to replace it all and should have!
I've got a 2006 Honda Accord EX 3.0 V6 with 190K miles. It has been and still is an awesome engine and run smooth as silk. I've always thought that the gas mileage was pretty decent for this car. I don't know why they had to ruin it by adding all of this crap on here. You should at least have the option to disable it, if you want.
VCM just like VTEC loves clean engine oil and proper weight of oil. Fake or questionable parts seem to be common know days.
I was thinking the same, the wrong weight could create more pressure beyond what the solenoid is engineered to work against. Just a thought
That washer looked like those push on washers that holds the rotor on before tire is installed.
20:07 ECO light means VCM is active.
wow the subs have skyrocketed
Job well done iven If I were the owner I would delete that stupid VCM thing many cars don't have that and work fine if you want a six cylinder or V8 that's very efficient well then you should get a hybrid or diesel.
If that valve is junk, the part is under 2 year warranty.
Ivan has the dealer receipt 🧾
Ivan could you put an oscilloscope on the control wires of the silenoid and observe what the PCM is doing?
I know very little about this system but can swap the solnoid 4 and 5 or 6 see if the problem moves
German look with the ‘tash - and imagine a Volkswagen with that tech - makes me shudder !
When you removed the solenoid and then replaced it and things operated properly, doesn't that, in itself, indicate THAT part is SUSPECT?
I would sooo disable that system....lack of QC with these manufacturers
Isn’t there a way a bypass that you can install to just disable that whole VCM thing I agree that’s a solution looking for a problem that isn’t there. Good luck.
Looks like a spring retainer for brake shoes
Brilliant as always 👍🏻🇬🇧
Any reason why you couldn’t take the solenoid off the car, and use a bench top power supply to activate it to see how it works?
Could the residual 5 & 6 misfire be due to crud build-up on the valves & seats, from running with them not properly seating when hot, after the excessively tight clearances? If so, it may clear itself as they bed in again?
If this car ever runs again, I would trade it for something showing a few symbols of sanity. Maybe manufacturers plan to destroy the gasoline engine with endless mechanical doodads and microprocessors. If that is the plan, they are well on their way.
even dealers are getting a lot of bad OEM parts right now, don't ask me how i know.
nobody at the dealership is taking this type of time with the diag -
Nice video Ivan.
If you are looking to buy a car and the engine sounds like a sewing machine, don't buy it!
Idonno how this engine sounds to you but on video it's noisy.
I don't think Buddha has elephant ears ☺
Wire a relay to the solenoid power that pulls the pressure switch down or up to fool the computer and plug the oil hole..
Oil pressure switch is just a feedback... Wouldn't actually shut off the oil flow and switch on the rocker arms! 😉
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I meant as a way to avoid limp home home. Computer send the signal to the solenoid and checks to see if the pressure switch changed. . I dont think it knows beyond that. Always thinking about defeat devices, I guess.
Bad stain for Honda...EPA screws up everything it regiulates
There's no way that part is a Honda part it's definitely after market
Can't u delete the variable thing?

thx for the vid
Another great process of elimination diag. to find THE problem. Honda should never have caved to the entities that be . None of these deactivation systems including the stop/start make any noticeable difference in fuel economy. 👍👍🇺🇸
They clearly DO make a difference when running the federal mandated tests, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. Manufacturers don't do this stuff for fun, it's most always driven by government regulations.
Part 2 and your still lost 😂😅
*you're 😜
27:40. huh like a lawnmower engine needle and seat which are notorious for leaking.
Let’s be honest, the idiot owner did this to himself. Maybe now he will know to change his oil and do other maintenance. It’s clear he just puts gas in it and that’s it.
i was waiting for this so patiently lol watching from dallas ivan good videos👍
