I love this song, too. It's beautiful but sad. In my humble opinion, the lyrics reflect Robin's personal experience when he faced hard times dealing with his early musical career, sudden fame, brothers, family, etc. He was very young back then. He once said that it was his spiritual song. But, I think the lyrics still relate to many of us now...
“That’s the voice-the voice that reaches your heart.” - Maurice, describing Robin’s voice It’s so wonderful to listen to someone who has the same appreciation for Robin’s uniquely beautiful voice. 🙏🏼
A year before Robin passed l was at his house in Thame, Oxford where he played this song in his garden at the Prebendal to friends. A lovely man. He also played some music from his music score for his requiem for the Titanic which got played in europe by his son after his death.
You know something? I noticed mostly with Robin very early their faces and the emotion that is displayed. Go back and watch Holiday and check out Robin. Powerful! One of the reasons why I fell in love with them!
The Sun Will Shine live in Melbourne 1974 is fabulous. It shows off Robin's voice at his best and is a very sensitive and emotional performance. I've watched it many times (as with many Bee Gees performances!).
In 1968, Robin and his first wife, Molly, survived a big train-crash without being hurt. But he saw many death or hard injured men. Beein' deeply shocked, he's been carrying some of them outside, ran back to help again. Lateron, he said, did'nt knew how he did that, nor had any idea, where that power to make it came from. For sure, his songwriting got influenced. Sitting in an aeroplane shortly after, he heard the melody of 'I Started A Joke' out of the turbins. To me, there's another song he imagined to Barry and Maurice, called 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You', from the same period, with stunning lyrics, he took like out of nowhere.
Thanks Peter. I knew about the airplane turbines, but not the train crash. Wow. I will be doing a reaction to “message” sometime. I absolutely love that song! Thanks again
They all were very funny. Many said, if they hadn’t been successful in music, they could have been comedians. Robin had the sharpest humor of the brothers, and could often break Barry into giggles in interviews. He lived a creative twist. In my opinion, this is classic Robin Gibb humor at its best. Poetry. Delivered dramatically, as they did with Mining Disaster, etc. They said you can’t just sing a song, you have to BE the song. It’s music and comedy and drama all rolled into one. I applaud his wit and humor - and of course his voice and delivery - when I hear it. His son, RJ Gibb (Robin John), has a cover of Joke.
I remember the first time I heard this song I cried. His voice is hauntingly beautiful. And I think you’re spot on with your interpretation. Thank you so much. ❤️ The Bee Gees and Robin!
Great reaction! Robin has a voice that will always grab your attention. You will feel every word he's singing. I can highly recommend two songs, where Robin sings the lead. First would be 'Heart like mine' (ruclips.net/video/rUGN71b2J_c/видео.html) and 'Rings around the moon' (ruclips.net/video/yrCh3n0ZesE/видео.html) Maybe you already know these songs, but if you don't, they are so worth your time checking them out. It hauntingly beautiful.
In 1967 Robin Gibb and his first wife were on a train that crashed .,..it was the Hither Green rail crash. I think it killed about 80 people maybe more..he said he and his wife got out of the train and we're trying to help people...but he never got over it.
Yes. You’re right. The meaning has never explained. I remember someone asking Robin it’s meaning and he never really answered. He danced around the question.
Thanks again, DaX for appreciating my favorite - Robin... so unique and beautiful! I love how this is every bit as good as the original that he helped write and sang at age 17-18!
I recommend viewing the video of the mythology tour by Barry, after his brothers passed. He starts singing "I started a Joke" and suddenly Robin starts singing on a huge screen and finishes the song. Not a dry eye in the house. Robin is sorely missed by all. ruclips.net/video/tbCXTWA_hxY/видео.html
I loved your reaction and love Robin's voice too. He looks even more emotional when you see some of his live performances in the early to mid 70s. He looks like he is about to have a nervous breakdown at times!
Something tells me that Barry and Robin had a deal worked out...Barry stands back to the audience during, "I Started A Joke" in EVERY concert, and Robin leaves the stage entirely when Barry sings, "Words"/
Barry didn't leave the stage because he was playing guitar. Being Robin didn't play an instrument, he was able to leave the stage easier when Barry was singing.
Love this song. Reminds me of when I worked at a pizza place around 1971 during high school. They had a 8 Track tape "The Best of the Bee Gees" and we played it every time I worked.
Wow, I feel your response to this beautiful live version of this song. Out of all of the studio and live versions of 'I started a Joke' this for me is the most precious, when he reaches the high notes, almost pulling the words out of his soul, you cant help but get a lump in your throat, the emotion in this version is so tangible and I love it and your beautiful response to it.
Dax, "I Can't See Nobody" is a must but, please use their 1974 Melbourne concert for your reaction. I promise that you won't be disappointed with this version. Love your Bee Gees reactions! Just became a subscriber. I promise to catch up with all the other reactions you've already done and will be waiting for notifications for future reactions. Robin is my favorite! What a beautiful voice belonging to such a beautiful man, inside and out! For me, you couldn't do too many Robin leads. Love this man and his brothers with all my heart!
@@lauriebarnes2999 Welcome aboard! That is one of my all-time favorite songs by them and I’ve been planning to do a reaction to it for several months. I will go ahead and use the Melbourne concert video that you suggested. Thanks again! 😉
daXmusiX - Robin was an introverted, sensitive guy but could be sarcastic with his humor so sometimes his biting wit did get him into trouble. According to his brothers and others, he was a voracious reader and genius with encyclopedic knowledge. He did amazing selfless work for veterans in the UK and as President of the British Heritage Society. When he was a teen, a lot of critics made fun of his looks, even calling him a "gopher". Disgusting. I think he was always sensitive about that and fighting for a decent public image and for his rightful place in the band overshadowed by a handsome brother. His brothers also said he was permanently changed after living through the terrible Hither Green train wreck when he was only 17 where he had to pull out mangled bodies and wounded people, some who had to have amputations on the spot, and that brought out the pathos in him whereas he was previously a wonderfully funny and outgoing child. He admitted that horror never left him to his dying day. I suspect the song is somewhat autobiographical. He was the one who wrote it. He would never explain its meaning but said it was spiritual to him. The best version IMO is at the Melbourne concert in 1989 where he got a standing ovation that lasted over a minute. His voice wasn't as strong in this version. I don't think anyone could sing with the heart and soul that Robin did. Unmatched. Here's a song he did karaoke to a backing track in his producer's office just to try out his new adult voice at only SIXTEEN. Amazing. ruclips.net/video/jAfhF4oKvwk/видео.html How can anyone tell me a 16 year old could sing like that!
Thanks very much for the incredible background on Robin. I’ve always suspected he was a bit of an intellectual and of course an introvert. Frankly, I like both of those qualities, perhaps because I was the same way, and really still am. Don’t think we ever lose that. I could hardly believe his voice in the link you gave, full of vibrato and bass, which he handles extraordinarily. Just wow. Thank you
@@daxmusix - BTW, when the train wreck occurred Maurice was miles away, stood up and said "Something has happened to Rob". Maybe the twin connection! As for his humor, his wife said he did a "Goons" skit on a plane with Robin Williams and cracked up the passengers. Glad you enjoyed the links. Did you notice I was a Robin fan, LOL? Of course they were a package deal, each bringing something vital to the table. BTW, I was born the same day as the twins, Dec. 22, 1949....which means I'm OLD!!!!!!! Cheers!

This is a great performance but if you listen carefully to the first time he should sing "I Finally Died, Which Started The Whole World Living" he either by mistake or on purpose sang "I Finally Died, Which Started the Whole World Laughing". Second time he sings it it right.
