  • Quick review on the Scag SFC 21 in comparison to the Honda HRU216. This is the 7hp model running the CV224 Kohler Comand Pro.
    It’s an absolute beast 🔥
I couldn’t find many clips on them when I was doing my research so hopefully this helps people out who were in the same position.

Good demonstration. Ive been carrying a Honda along on my trailer to get where my larger mowers cant go but, like you said, it lacks power. I intend to replace it with the Scag next season.

Short and to the point. The SCAG's built up to and just above the standards of my Canadian commercial Honda durability wise when it comes to the deck and engine, but lacks in some key departments to my Honda including the direct shaft drive hydrostatic transaxle, ergonomic handle bars and Honda's blade brake clutch. That said, I don't know what SCAG uses for a blade brake clutch but the one on my Canadian market commercial Honda (2021) is similar if not exactly the same as the HR214SX I grew up with dating back to the mid-1980s. If I couldn't choose Honda as a mower, the SCAG would probably be my go-to. That said, for mulching performance I prefer my acquired used HRX217 with the NeXite deck to the commercial Honda as it does a better job at mulching due to the deck and slightly larger GCV190 engine. SCAG's choice of Kohler Command Pro engines on its 21 and 30" models are a good choice as I have fewer issues with them than Briggs and Stratton, especially on my Cub Cadet Series 2000 tractors, each having a 12.5hp horizontal shaft engine. Then again, Kohler choosing Honda's GX(V) engine base design for this generation of Command Pro doesn't hurt either.

Big price difference between these two mowers up here in Canada where I am too. If you can find the Honda HRC216....they're $1729 Canadian. The Scag 21" is $2500. Not sure if the Scag is worth an $800 price difference but it definitely looks like a fantastic machine.

@@joeraptor1 it’s built like a tank and has a ton of power. It’s heavy but still easy to maneuver. I do have some complaints though: 1. I’m not impressed with the cut. It’s average at best. I have a 2004 Super Recycler 6.5 hp, that will blow it away. Blade is sharp so I’m not sure if I should try to find a mulching blade?. 2. Kink in fuel line. Mower would cut out for a sec every 20 mins or so. I looked it over and saw a kink. Fuel line was way too long so I cut some off and all is well.

@@davidodonnell4036 Thanks for the feedback. From what I've seen, the cut definitely doesn't look good. The Honda HRC and Toro Commercial 21 inch seem a lot better. Would need to check blade tip speed first to see what's creating the poor cut. A larger landscape company bought 2 of these units last year. Both units had transmissions fail. They were replaced under warranty. The company owner said that he likes the cut of these units but parts wear out far too fast and are expensive and to hard to find if you need to replace them.

Commercial grade. Expect to pay more than a mower meant for residential home use.
