Inside China's Thriving Drag Queen Culture

- Growing up in a small, rural city in northeast China, Neil was obsessed with dressing himself in bed sheets and playing with dolls. It wasn’t until he got older that he embraced his sexuality, taking his hobby for designing glamorous, handmade outfits from his home out onto the streets of China. Now he's linked up with the country’s thriving drag scene, finding solidarity among a group of queens embracing their creativity by designing and performing in lavish outfits. We met up with Neil and his friend Kris as they geared up for a major drag competition in Shanghai, following along before they hit the stage for a wild night out with dozens of other queens.

shoutout to a) covering this topic b) covering it well and showing the vulnerability and emotionality of it c) giving the queens what seems like more or less agency in telling their stories d) let's talk CINEMATOGRAPHY and editing! well done on catpuring moods, excitement, use of silence, audio editing, those FILM SHOTS were exquisite I see you! d) next steps: push further, ask questions, leave us to answer, be critical, be uncomfortable, delve into human rights, leave us with the bigger picture. overall fantastic work!
you are a brainwashed programmed moron. Marx would be proud of the good useful idiot you have become
ManBearPig are you okay?
Not sure if you added 2 (D’s) on purpose hahaha 😂
He needs to be a fashion designer
YES💙💙💙💙💙💙
Men used to do this all the time throughout Chinese history. It was called Peking Opera.
Just what i'm about to say... Thanks.. I enjoy peking opera so much..
Lmao ofc
Fucking opera
Yes they also sing in high pitched voices to imitate women. Like the vocal chords on those opera singers are crazy!!!
Spoiler alert: they still do.
I'm Chinese and have no idea China has a drag scene. Good for them! Also the video is beautifully done (I love the abandoned shawl/yoga ball scenes in the end). Why so many dislikes I don't understand
1.3 billion people on earth are Chinese,
Its fair to say theres a scene for everyone.
The dislikes are from people with morals and a natural disgust for unnatural things. This behavior is, quite frankly, disgusting and God bless anyone who dislikes this video for that reason.
TheRPGentleman- These people also have morals.... i'm personally not interested in the drag scene but i don't discriminate against them. If it makes them happy and no one gets hurt then i don't see an issue. Maybe worry a little more about yourself and less of what makes other people happy. There are always going to be odd or different communities and cultures that people don't like, doesn't mean you need to hate or bash. Im literally the manifestation of demonic sacrifice and i have to tell you this? Geez, i need a new job.....
Listen, everyone has the right to whatever they want to do, but its upsetting to think about my kids being able to come across a video of drag queens at a young age.

Shanghai LGBT community organizes events every year. Lived there for 10 years, I have been to a few events. Local government is pretty tolerant, even more so than some states in souther/mid America.
That's because it's still not mainstream. Everything coming out of the underground will get suppressed by the CCP.
Shanghai is too expensive to live in for me girl I wish I could live there and be in that drag community
@@baraclude 这个本来就是小众的东西。。。你不带节奏 会死么?
Is Shanghai the place in China that has the "most developed" LGBTQ+ community?
I'm curious to ask if Shanghai is the best place in China right now for LGBT members?
I wonder if there’s an established International Drag Conference held somewhere in the world? Imagine if there was an INTERNATIONAL drag SHOW with all INTERNATIONAL drag queens and despite language barriers they all got together, transcending all issues and performing as sisters. Yeah, just holding court and showing the world what love and acceptance and sisterhood really means!
It's SISTARhood! Yasssss
well, rupaul's drag race have many spin-offs outside of USA, like Drag Race Thailand, France, Canada, Philippines, Italy etc.
there's even a version of a competition between famous drag queens from these spin-offs, like Drag Race UK vs The World, but unfortunately this version is broadcasted in english only.

Kris is an amazing friend always so supportive and praises everything such a bubbly character. I wish him and his partner happy marriage.
You know what, i supports people like these expressing themselves in such authoritarian country like china. More power to them.
joni29 That’s why China is so awesome, it has a ton of underground scenes that really bring out the most expressive individuals you’ll ever meet.
qwareverse what? I dont get what are you saying. I didnt even say anything about taiwan. But fyi taiwan is china. The republic of china, not people of public of china. There are 2 chinas in this world, wether the politics and governments want to admit that or not.

If you want to write a counter argument, then write down a good one...
All you did is laugh in capital letters and wrote disgusting...
If you think it is write down the reason so that a civilized conversation could happen.
We don't need to argue, its all on tape above. Psychiatry is the solution :)
@@userct not really. They're fine
That Frozen Lolita's artwork (painting at the end) is fabulous.
I love seeing drag culture around the world it is the best You better work
This is my favorite VICE doc so far and I've watched them all.
I would love to chill with the bigger dude, the hairdresser. He is hilarious. He needs his own youtube channel
Too bad yt doesn't exist in China 🤷
Follow the Haus of Lily on fb and Instagram! She's now the haus mother of the one and only drag house in China.
VPNs always exist my dudes XD I used RUclips just fine in China through them
this comments expose how far we are from an tolerant and diverse society. disgusting
A lot of work..time..prep..vision..and money go into doing drag..its nice to see people enjoying their lives and nevermind everyone elses opinion about it..
That silver look in these blue street lights? STUN💖💖
I see a lot of hate comments in the comment section. If you're "triggered" by drag queens, why did you click and watch the video? Lol why would you voluntarily subject yourself to something you hate or disagree with? Triggered or intrigued? 🤔
same reason leftists love to be triggered by the Alex Jones and Milo types.... not exactly sure what that reason is though xD
I like to torture myself
@@piratepat44 false equivalency, Milo and Alex are political, also spread lies.
Drag Queen's are just men dressing up.
Vivace Von Diamonde Drag has been political since before either were even alive.. it's honestly impossible to separate the two
@@Iycoris drag has also been theatrical which most of the time it still is today,
I am freaking love this video so much!!
whenever i click on a video with china in the name i get a mcdonalds ad in chinese xD
This is some real empowering shit.
I liked his monologue at the end. Carry on being you man. Peace and love.
they are all so gorgeous! ♡
This was very nice to see. I appreciate vice for doing this and I would like to see more of this in the future.
And longer
i swear this kind of stuff is so good to watch
I'm really living for this.
I always wanted to have friends like them. They look so positive and fun to be with. I like the way this video is made. Such beautiful scenes..
I love how they both looked out for each other and even hyping them up 😍 I love the vibes from this video
I am in love with the 1 eye shades!!!! That silver costume is 🔥
Cinematography was WOW
I love what vice is doing. Bring the uncommon.
Woah those paintings are mesmerizing. So Inspiring. ♡
I agree with his last sentence. Amazing video. Thank you VICE
Love these queens! Positive vibes from the U.S.!!
gross
i live for drag queens honestly i'm so glad they can express themselves !!
This is honestly amazing so happy to see that there’s drag queens in other countries other than America
this is such a beautiful video
oh my god theyre even crazier i love it so much
Please make me understand why this is offensive to you. How does it even affect you? What is to dislike in this video? It is well made and gives a glimpse into a culture I didn't think existed. Thanks, Vice.
SerenityReceiver I think the problem may lie in the ‘reality’. China underwent a population control mandate of 1 child per family. Culturally, Chinese find daughters a burden, and require a son to inherit, carry on the name, etc. Years down the line....severe excess of men. On top of that, pressure for women to marry by circa mid 20’s. 30yo women regarded as leftover. They’ll end up with older white men. Plus younger women with insane expectations of/from men. So there are loads of men sharing prostitutes or whatever. China needs more women. The feminisation of the men is ‘not good’ for their society. I recall when Asian men were respected. Now worldwide, men see them as ‘cuck’ pushovers. I often see a tidy Asian man and woman together and then realise that ugly, dorky white dude is her bf and that Asian dude is the gooseberry on the date!
Ughhh i love drag its such a creative art!!
Guy in silver's costume reminds me of Lady Gaga. Also agree that every guy should try to wear heels and a bra to know what it feels like. They don't realise how uncomfortable those things can be even though most like girls wearing them.
I'm very surprised Asian countries, China in particular, is taking this on. Asian countries are quite traditional so I wasn't expecting this. It's definitely not a common thing or as accepted in the west, people still fear for their lives as one guy mentioned his mother's worries about standing out in any sense. I hope people are just more accepting all around. We'll all probably be dead before the whole world is accepting of this or lgbtq+ people but at least progress is being made. As long as it isn't hurting anyone, I'll be supportive.
I am not that surprised tho! In Japan we have a long history of crossdressing, it's an art form and part of our culture, and I always thought that was the case across Asia. It's become shameful only in modern society, I am very happy that there is a scene taking back that part of us and making it cool again
The attitude towards drag and homosexualities varies a lot across different regions in China. His mom is frightened because they are from a small city in North Eastern China, aka. “The Russia of China”. The only place worse for LGBTIQ people than North Eastern China is Muslim regions of China.
China has a long history of men performing and dressing as women, especially if you look into peking opera. They don't have much issues with 'drag culture' as it has with 'gay culture'
Wolfferoni exactly why I don’t wear a bra... love some heels though ngl
>As long as it isn't hurting anyone, I'll be supportive.
and we give a care about you supporting us or not why? lol
I lived in Shanghai a few years ago. Wish I'd have known these guys---they're cool as hell! Rock on
super hugs from the Phlippines.......GO GIRLS!!! LIVE, LOVE AND DRAGGGG!!!!!!
This was beautifully shot and overall just fantastic! Loved seeing the similarities and differences between the Chinese and American drag scenes. Bravo VICE
Love the artwork at the end. Is it his and does he sell his work?
In that last sentence he said gender was easy to break (打破), not 'cross'.
Breaking gender is a step beyond crossing, crossing gender is just a tool needed to break down gendered boundaries. Breaking down gendered restrictions is what we need to be free. While I don't agree that breaking gender is easy, I do agree with his intentions of doing it. Let's not translate away his radical way of thinking. :)
Amazing! They alll looked like gorgeous stars! That robot silver costume was creative and fun and looked beautiful under the colored city lights. I would love to go to a club like that in China . So many foreigners too - wast he person who won a foreigner?
Certainly appeared to be a Caucasian & possibly a one time contestant on Ru Paul's Drag Race.
I've never thought about drag queens in Asian countries, wow
Z2 g7 there’s an official rupauls drag race going on in Thailand right now
Z2 g7 I agree
Z2 g7 yea even in South Korea because you see male idols dress as girls.
Drag queens had been in Asian culture for thousands of years. There were more drag queens in SEAsia in modern times even before they were "cool" in the West.
The art of drag existed in asia waaaaaaaaaaay before western gay culture
Omg her dress is amazing
Frozen Lolita needs her own show, the creativity and effort she puts is incredible
Wonderful artists, well done.
omg that all blue purple Butterfly look could literally be on vogue 😩😩😩
wow, this guy design is real good !!!!
his mask reminds me of bjork who looked like that in her latest album.
Björk’s makeup on that album cover was actually done by a drag queen named Hungry.
Seeing all these people be happy makes me happy.
12:33 this is my favourite shot. Dazzling!
Omg, the robot performance was AMAZING!!! Fuckin' slay! Wish i had that much confidence, def dances much better than me xD
Danielle Spargo I clearly doubt they dance as good as you 😂
his art is gorgeous
I absolutely love there outfits! Can I borrow lol
This is amazing seeing a group of persons in such a conservation society feeling comfortable expressing themselves. Diversity truly is the spice of life! KEEP IT GOING BOYS!
it is not it is disgusting!! Men are being ruined by you
When that robot/android drag came in the mood of the video suddenly felt so sci-fi.
That tie back trench coat is fireeee did he make that
Whoever edited this deserves a raise.
This was so good , the silver outfit was to die for, it took me back to memories of my child who was transgender , Alloura the Queen of Dramatics and the Balls she went to and her performances , may she Rest in Peace......
That beaded face made was 🔥🔥
"Ohhmygaawwddd" 5k times. Lol 😂😂
I just wanna know where he got those bullseye monocle glasses from they were fucking amazing someone find it for me please
I heard they banned depictions of gay people from tv in china, hope these people will be okay and won't be hurt for being who they are. Much love from ireland x
Depictions of gay, sexual acts, etcetera on media doesn't mean they ban the gay people themselves... Also people always know a way to bypass all those censors. Including pictures of text of sexual content (text-based censors cannot detect that easily), VPN, etcetera. There is always a way.
Daisy June But a ban like that does indicate a very negative stigma towards people who are LGBTQ+, so OPs worries are understandable though..
Patrick Gannon is it cold in Ireland?
@@tomhuijben1073 no they just dont wanna trigger a bigger population. China is big and populous. if there is a conflict between the LGBTQ and others, it will be big. And at this moment, Chinese government doesnt want to see it
well done, loved the peak inside!
I actually envy the dragers, I somehow wanna try it 😄
First guy needs to teach me how to draw and sew

Beginning song ?
What's the name of the artist in the end of the video? I liked his works...
What's the song name in the beginning of the video? It's killing me someone please help. 😭
Pretty cool stuff, I didn't know there was such a vibrant scene in such a repressed country
Happy pride month btw
Drag is thriving pretty much all over East Asia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan all have pretty big drag scenes, Thailand and the Philippines also have fairly big drag communities.
Repressed? No, not at all.
@@chriss7196 Bruh, they don't have access to RUclips

I saw drag queen and clicked
Me too because anybody likes to look at them because it’s unusual and funny! I look at them like entertainers maybe comedians! I think not all of them are gay!
The robot dance was so amazing! He's actually super hott

Song from the beginning?! Thanks!! : )
Fascinating
Amazing costume and great performer. He should have won!
I love this!!
I can’t find the music at the start of the video, anyone recognize it ? Was it created for the video ?
Ok Ru, we need some China next season. Yassssss queen
Why did you guys disable the comments on your new video?
Those guys are simply loveable :D
this is the coolest subject
Does anyone know I can find those scope shades he was wearing?
his Drag name is Frozen Lolita,I watched her performance once, she got talent
Keep it up Vice. As long as you get these gravel eaters to see different perspectives, then it is worth the views.
They. Look. Good.
What was the song that was playing while he was dancing with the bouncing ball?
I love this thank you
Why did the editors add in fake cheering? Like at 15:06, u can see the audience isnt making those noises lol
He is my mood 💖

Fabulous.
