- Voguing, and the ballroom scene that gave rise to the dance genre, were started in New York City in the 1980s by Black and Latinx queer folks seeking a place to be themselves. And now, the ballroom culture has taken roots in China, creating a a safe space for LGBT youths to express queerness and find each other.

As a Black and Asian queer person from NYC, where the first vogue balls started, I am in awe at how much our culture has grown and expanded.
Well Black people created it. It shouldn’t be a surprise that what we do influences the whole world.

Black ballroom culture has reached China, wow. Black people may be at the bottom of the barrel in other areas but we are truly the inaugurators of mainstream/pop culture and this often goes unnoticed no credit is given.
When I was a young male and insecure I'd feel alienated by these things, I'd feel appalled in a way because deep down it made me question things within myself. Nowdays I'm secure enough to know that I don't have any bicurious bones in me, but I also accept and can partake in such art without prejudice. It's quite sad how deep down it's peoples personal issues that makes them somehow feel the need to intervene in how others live their lives. When in truth, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, let people be what they are as long as it makes them happy.
I hope they [the young Chinese] won't get to crushed by their government, expression of self is necessary to live a happy life.

isnt it ironic that the first 'drag' queens were found in operas and plays throughout China and Europe where women werent allowed to in these industry's centuries ago yet the lbgtq is still an underground culture in China
@@Shermar this was common in Shakespeare plays where a young boy would play a remake because female were not allowed to perform. And in Japan, the first geishas were male called taikomochi.
@@Shermar I'm Chinese and can attest to this as I've learnt this in school as part of the culture module. But it is hard finding English information on Chinese Opera history it seems. If you are interested, you can search for 男旦 (male, female opera character). But this depends heavily on the government policy, as the Chinese culture/Confucianism doesn't prohibit female acting and it's not frowned upon, (although performing in general is frowned upon as an occupation in the old days).
So Baidu's encyclopedia on this says the Qing government (Manchurian government) banned male and female performing together and temporarily banned female performers all together whereas they were often the performing leads in thousands of years prior. This carried to the 1930s in Hong Kong when the mixed gender ban was lifted (Wikipedia on Cantonese Opera in the Chinese lang).
So the correct statement should be women weren't allowed to perform with males on stage in China since the Qing dynasty (1600s-1900s), so female characters were often performed by male.
But extending on the LGBTQ subject, the strong discrimination towards queer people really came from the West where it was thought to have been a type of sickness. There had been gay Chinese emperors. Some idioms and saying did came from them. And there had been male looking for male prostitutes and other more gender fluid acts well documented in poems and paintings. But getting married to the same sex goes against Confucianism, so there's that. It conflicts with the idea of "continuation of the family blood line" and "passing on your work/occupation to your son".
@@Shermar understandable, I don’t think it rlly think it matters who did it first because it existed differently in every culture. Though ofc the black and brown community is the pioneer of modern drag. The word Drag is derived from those Shakespeare plays though.

I'm just telling my personal experience in learning this matter, and everything I've said below is research and you can verify this by Google Translating Chinese pages and looking for sources from the encyclopedia sites for the source literature. Yes, the statements are cited from books and articles.

@@fryingpancakes8445 I think the policy is not only very unkind to marginalized people, but also heavily ignorant of the places from which the CCP draws their supposedly superior morals. In this case, it actually dates back to European and American imperialism during the Century of Humiliation (between First Opium War and end of WW2). Christian missionaries influenced Chinese society, which used to be much more tolerant to homosexuality and male femininity, into thinking that such things were immoral. The CCP, which soon took power from the KMT over mainland China after WW2, has always claimed to fight against imperialism, but this is one of the issues it has ironically sided with imperialists on since the very beginning.
By now, the CCP, and even just Chinese society in general, are only anti-imperialist in name. They have not only fallen to the influences of capitalism, white supremacism, and Christian morality, but China has even begun trying to establish itself as an imperialist world power. Therefore, for everything I've explained above, I think that what they claim about modern LGBTQ+ movement being "western influence" is an utterly hypocritical statement.
@@AquaHeart Ancient China back then was also rather imperialistic in its approach, just with more culture, but yes, it's culture does not discriminate against homosexuality and male femininity, as it equated lust for the same sex and lust for the different sex as under the sins of lust, without distinguishing one another.

As a Chinese gay man just migrant to US before covid, I was crying from the beginning to end. I never in my life thought a gay communities like this in real life in China mainland can be real, a DL but also a safe haven for the gays honestly makes my heart warm and sad at same time because we always have to fight in the dark on the cracks and crumbs. The society is indeed trending more conservative these days, but the underground culture in China has been booming for decades, often at best when the mainstream is most conservative and restricted. You’ll also be surprised to see the variety of underground scenes if you know where to find them.
Some people automatically assume Chinese gov will punish these people, but there is a difference between “not promoting sth” and “banning sth entirely” in Chinese. The gov most definitely knew this club, they just “kept one eye open and one eye closed”.
But of course, only tolerance is not enough… The true success is when clubs like this are no longer underground.
Unless when they going political... they will really ban it like valun dafa.

But they’re still well connected online and in underground bars etc. Hopefully when Xi Jinping and his entourage dies in 20-30years, new progressive people can rule this beautiful country and let the people be themselves. China‘s youth is very different even when they can’t say it loudly, and that gives me lots of hope :)

I have to agree with BaZi when he said that they might have to go deeper underground but they are here to stay as long as people feel free here. As a member of LGBTQ Community myself in China, I've always been forcing myself to act like a "normal person", even though I work in music industry which is often considered more open with sexuality. I've never shown my true self to anyone cuz I'm not brave enough. I couldn't hold my tears watching this video. (btw, I'm a DJ/Producer living in Beijing)

So awesome! These types of scenes move culture forward. They are the brave pioneers of society. No government should ever be allowed to strangle a persons life and artistic expressions. In the end, society is only as free as the most margenilized people among them. Allow the gays to gather and all you get is art and spectacle, not hate and violence like other groups.

So the ballroom scene is at the frontier of the LGBTQ culture in China, and I think that’s awesome cuz ballroom is about liberation. I don’t know if this is cultural appropriation or not, but credit must be given to the Black community for creating spaces where queerness can be celebrated.

It seems to me that this is being done with a huge amount of love and respect for the original scene. I could be wrong, but I think it's important to embrace inspiration and imitation that comes from that place of sheer love and joy for a beautiful thing

I have been conservative minded of gender based expectations my entire live and I will probably never change as I enjoy it. Over time i have come to understand how inconsiderate I am. The way I live my life is to structured and disciplined and it breeds harsh criticism of others sense I have such a tight grip on my self and can’t find anything to criticize that I’m not already working on ,nor can others.
Even the conservative men around me tell me to chill out and loosen up as I kill all the chill and fun in any environment with my harsh criticisms and rigid ideology that won’t even let people who aren’t below 15% body fat eat sugar.
The point is I have realized that this world of self expression should be allowed to flourish on its own even if it does not live long, if not people like me will kill it and drive human culture and expression into a grey place that I’m not autistic enough to think people will want to join me in.
Well that's a very cool level of self awareness you are reaching. I can only hope you manage to find your very own way to express yourself, one that will allow you to loosen that grip when you want to and on your terms in a manner that makes you happy.
We don' t need understanding or love as long as we get freedom and respect. But I often found out that when people extend those last two, the first two soon follow.

You will have to elaborate on renaissance being from conservative thought as from my understanding it introduced new ideas and brought old ones into the modern era. Kind of like swing music. Old does not mean conservative.
At first I did not see this as adding to culture, it seemed more like of a colorful splat on the wall that few would enjoy and im trying to not kill people fun as much as I usually do.
After looking at the way people dress and dance in this drag ,ballroom fusion im not so sure if they have nothing to add, I have to think about it.
And let’s not be dishonest here, American music (manly rap) has taken the world by storm and as much as I dislike it, I can not deny the usage rates. Our movies and celebrities are love by people from first-third world countries. Even though our infrastructure is graded a c at best by the civil Society of engineers people still look up to the idea of coming to New York and Washington.

For anyone wondering, these people are going to be fine, the government generally does not interfere with the LGBTQ community. One of China’s most popular media personalities is Jin Xing, who is openly trans and hosts many TV shows that are literally produced by the government. She was classically trained in ballet by the military dance academy. She is married, adopted three children and is one of the biggest celebrities in China, trans or not.
I wish Vice would get facts straight, ballroom became popular in the 80s but it started way before then.

@ShutYourEyes AndOpenYourMouth to be fair, there is a lot of subjectivity that goes into gymnastics and figure skating, most obviously at the level of individual judges, but also in terms of the collective judgment of those who decide what technical elements should be given the most value and delegated the most points... and that can change from one year to the next. True, it's hard to see what discrete elements of voguing would lend themselves to this kind of codification (not that I would actually know), but to me, codification is anathema to queer culture.
One aspect of ball culture that I find interesting is how it meshes the competitive with the communal, though it's never confused which of those two is more important. I still like the idea of a ballroom "Olympics" if that meant a coming together and sharing of queer aesthetics from across the world.

China knew to make political changes and allow things like more personal expressions that an economic revolution needed to occur first… what happened in 1989 Tiananmen square was a clash between the USSR Gorbachev supporters that believed political reforms should come before economic reforms.
Deng opposed this as he knew… economic reforms needed to come first and that’s why they opposed it then… but I knew I would see things like this event in China eventually because even he said… the idea is… you can’t truly give people choices if there are no choices.
I didn’t understand then but I understand now.. and I can see so many people believe in the illusion of choice that “freedom and democracy” blindly promises

Asian martial arts inspired the hand performance and acrobatics of vogue, African American LGBTQ+ communities created and pioneered a revolutionary art and culture to combat alienation and oppression, and now China’s underground LGBTQ+ scene is directly inspired by ballroom culture

Before Willi Ninja, voguing was editorial and posing heavy, lacking the nunchuck and tai-chi esque movements, dramatic kicks and dynamics that Willi picked up from martial arts. Willi was black himself, so this is in no way discrediting black people.
Taiwan is not a part of China. Taiwan is its own country.

fortunately its not a rule, just media guidelines from state regulators. The push against feminine men will only really affect mainstream movies and tv for the most part and its not so clear cut, its not a law or anything and the guidelines will change, its just that the media regulators are mostly older chinese with old ideas about gender roles.Luckily LGBT are safe, and a trans person won a lawsuit against work discrimination recently so things are looking up.

watched rupaul, watched pose netflix, i don't get it why would one go through all that trouble, but, the final outcome, i only can appreciate the art side of it. Some came out beautiful prop, and some really spark ideas for my concept art. And to learn and realizing wow, it does exist today - ok, cool. And watching this....... many may not get it, how even you give score even.... still end of the day..... very artsy. Its like watching cosplayers and that's where i feel erm hmm... common ground indeed. Oh and what surprise me was...... ok, so madonna the reason why vogue was so popular perhaps.... next.... fashion show have this kinda dance and people enjoy it.... ow, again... from ballroom HAHHAHAHA see.... its art.... meant to produce and inspire other art forms.
