    If you want the proper lock lubricant, use graphite powder. It won't attract dirt to lock mechanisms like an oil would. Graphite lubricant is the correct choice for locks.

    • @themykeshow9027
      @themykeshow9027 3 года назад +97

      Exterior door locks have a pressure plate thats pretty effective at keeping dust & muck out. Interior ignition keyways are always inside your car, so they don't get (much) exposure to dust either.
      WD-Forty is fine for these applications.
      Yes, graphite *is* a generally preferable lubricant for *most* locks, but for the applications Scotty mentions here, the difference is insignificant.

      Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong, but I'd be concerned about graphite's conductivity while using it for my car. I'd be less worried about the door locks than the ignition, if there's any electronics in there you might fry them.

      @@jonathanmueller2849 It's a non-issue my dude. The mechanical portion of the ignition switch is separate from the electric ignition switch portion. I beg to differ, it was something they used for equipment in winter weather.
      It's not the best thing to used as lubrication. Like motor, it'll dry out. It's not really oil, it's like minerals.
      If you use on chain, like bike chain it will attract dirt to it and hard to clean off.

      Anything that stays there will attract grime and dust to stick on those areas. Wd40 dries off after a little while so it works out. As long as the doors etc are smooth that's enough. You only spray a little or it will run down though.

I have a 37 year old Trans Am that's never had WD-40 sprayed in the locks and they work just fine, WD40 make dirt, grit and dust stick to the inside of the lock, if you keep spraying it it'll probably continue to work but if you leave it it'll likely grunge up and seize, use lock lubricant and I'd only use it when the lock or key starts to feel like it may be binding in any way.
