I think water in the toilet wasn't working because in theory the use of the toilet while the train is sitting in the station is forbidden, due to hygienical reasons. While the train is moving, the water works.
I was surprised to see that this train didn't use the new alignment further inland between Ventimiglia and Genoa (see fx Genoa-Ventimiglia railway at WP)
It's honestly a bit sad seeing how the intercity services have not been well maintained and upgraded. Probably they've fallen victims to trenitalia's prioritization of the hst services, much like the suburban and commuter networks.

Have a great trip! Yes when you book the ticket on trenitalias website you can select your seat for a 2 euro fee during the booking process, then you can pick a seat right by the doors/ luggage rack :-)
Yes there is upper space also you can ask there are 2 train chief in the whole convoy and if your lucky you could just put them in the bike compartment or also there is space at the start of every wagon.

Ah that might be the case! I thought these carriges looked newer where technology has removed the need for such pratice :-)

What time did you board the train? I'm afraid if I ride one that leaves at 7pm, I might not see the view because the sun has already set.
Mine was around 5 I think. Just Google the sunset time for when you plan to travel, you have almost 2 hours along the coast 😀

Coast is on the right hand side of the driving direction of the train going from Ventimigla.
