This might be the best thing that happened to Wright. He can master his craft far away from the glaring spotlight of Montreal. He can focus solely on his game without having to be the face of the Canadiens.
The developpment team in Montreal is a totally new group led by Adam Nicholas who's an All-Star in that field. I agree that pressure-wise, Seattle is a blessing for Wright, they wont rush him for sure, but who knows if he wouldn't have blossomed into a pure star under Nicholas' wing. Sadly we'll never know, best of luck for Shane.
Which makes me feel even worse for Slafkovsky. Now he has heightened expectations considering Montreal "reached" on the pick, and he'll be compared to Wright for the rest of his career.
I agree with the fact that he'll compared to Wright in the first years of their career, but I disagree on the fact that Slaf was a reach, he was ranked 1st on many lists and amongst many scouts, he wasn't a consensus by any mean, but nor was Wright.
@@AlexRodigue Same, I don't think they reached either. But unfortunately, most of the media and the fans see it that way so they'll have those expectations of him
I'm from Montreal, been a fan since 85, and I have not purchased an active player's jersey since they traded my man Chris Nilan to the Rangers. I Stick with retired players, I think we have a few good ones to choose from :)
@@kodyskwarchuk7421 there's quite the difference between Connor McDavid and Shane Wright. McDavid would have to have died before the draft to not go #1 overall.
It all makes sense. We have to get over the fact that, the draft isn't all about "who's the best player in the draft?" Because nobody really knows that anyway. You can see by what happened that it's about which player best fits our needs. And also this may be a great motivator for Wright. And as a Habs fan, I think they got a hell of a player in Juraj
Wright got passed by Slaf who has a great personality for leadership and sales ...Wright is not in Slaf's league in regards to those items or size and offensive potential ...Jersey picked the elite Defender as they are stacked up front and Yotes wanted Cooley all along ....Wright got lucky to be where he is ....Slaf will be the face of the Habs , .It has worked out perfectly for everyone ..
i really don't think so. mtl messed up here. first Wright played in arguably the second best league in the world behind the NHL. Suzuki is definitely not a first line Center he is a 2nd line center at best. Wright also had more points at the age of 15 than McDavid. I guarantee Wright will be the better player in the long run and win rookie of the year. a lot of people are forgetting wright really didn't play much hockey in the last 2 years because of covid but when it returned he was tearing it up. and when it comes to drafting I would always pick the dominant Center over a Winger. drafting a number one centers is one of the hardest to draft in the NHL. wingers grow on trees compared to centers. even if you draft the center to make a trade you would get a lot more value than a Winger
@@chrismeade764 While a agree that Wright should have been first OA and Montreal will deeply regret not picking him calling the OHL the second best league in the world is a real joke and makes your hockey knowledge VERY questionable.
Finally, a very good summary of the situation of the Montreal draft having regard to the position of Shane Wright. Very well done my friend. Congratulations.
I heard part of the reason he fell is because in his interviews teams grilled him for taking a year off during the pandemic rather than playing in Europe and weren't satisfied with the answers he was giving, which led them to believe he had an attitude problem.
@@jeffreym.8957 Guess it depends on how bad you want it? I mean the top 2% make the pro's. If he gives a half ass answer that shows lazy or entitlement it will sway a team to pass on him.
Something that has been a big trend the last few years in the NFL is that college players who do extremely well as freshman, but arent eligible for the draft for 2 more years seem to lose energy and don't produce the same and fall in the draft. But end uo being great picks. Sometimes the risk of an injury sees these guys start to play conservative because they know they are going to get paid and dont want an injury to risk losing it all.
I think the big thing with his development is he essentially took a full year off, and a lot of rumours regarding the fact that his work ethic was terrible.
@@rmaguire1000 and that's why Seattle getting him can be great because hehas bee told he is the next McDavid since he was 15 and 3 teams passed on him. So maybe it will jump start his work ethic.
The draft interview, and mental evaluations, are hugely important. GMs want to gauge how well an 18 year old is going to handle the move from the kids game into the top level. Talent alone can get you to the NHL - but it won't keep you there. We've seen plenty of busts at the top of the draft - all comes down to how they handled the NHL mentally. The video showed an example of Slaf's mature reply, to some Habs fans that booed him. In the aftermath, of the draft, we got to see first-hand Wrights immaturity. There were a number of tweets, that went out, that disparaged Slaf. Tweets such as "Slaf is the worst number 1 pick since Yakopov". Rather than accept that he went first, and just moving on - Wright "liked" all these tweets that were putting down the actual number 1 pick. That shows incredible immaturity - and, I believe, shows us why Wright slipped so far. Wright has, since, deleted all of these likes - but the internet remembers.... Did he delete them because he realised it was a poor show of class? Or did the Kraken front office see this and tell him to remove them?
i think what helped slafkovsky with regard to some character building, if i may say so (i don't know shane wright at all, so im not making comparisons, just explaining about slafkovsky), is that he went on to play in the finish league. he left home at the age of 14 to follow his professional career, he has played in finish junior league for three seasons before playing in the men's league last season. for a 15-16 year old kid that is massive to be half a continent away from your family, new language, different hockey coaching, new culture... and then to play in turku against men at 17-18 dealing with struggling numbers. ...he is 18 but he has already gone thru a period of unfulfilled expectations in tps turku as well as his stellar moments in the olympics. but basically he's been thru it all on his own since he was 14-15 years old.
as a habs fan im so happy we got the salvskwatch. He's a hard worker and for an 18 year old he didnt have to bad of a first showing. it wasnt spectacular by any means but im confident he'll do great things
All I can say is that the fan base here in Seattle are over the moon to have Wright, I'm confident our veterans won't let any kind of overconfidence slide. As a player fit having Beniers and Wright as the 1C 2C of the future is incredible.
there are stories floating around Montreal that during the interviews, Wright and Slafkovkiy were shown deficiencies in their games - Wright seemed offended while Slafkovsky took it as a challenge to improve - those kinds of things are the difference makers - good for Wright actually to get under the tutelage of Ron Francis - I think Wright has the chance to be a player like Francis used to be...1700+ games and points? I think Seattle would be happy with that...
We will see I guess. he has yet to suit up. he may have already been a turn off in the locker room and remains a healthy scratch. he may not be ready for the nhl. he may be the next Yakupov. 3 teams passed on him for a reason. One can argue need but when you factor in the adage of "pick the best guy available" it's possible teams actively took a pass on the guy because of his attitude etc. Personality tends to stay pretty similar along the lifespan. If Wright is a dick, it won't matter who he is under. He may not have the capacity to look at himself critically. In that case, I can see him playing for a lot of teams before he is done. Vessey was seen as the next God of hockey before he made it into the NHL. Vessey is worthy of playing in the league and it's clear he didn't meet the expectations. Still, I agree there is a chance Francis can turn him into something. I am highly skeptical at this point but i don't have enough information anyway. I think Montreal made the smart choice. Slav might not turn into the superstar that a no 1 pick should be either. whatever that is right? still, i think montreal has a guy that is going to fill a role they need already and has the potential to be a force on the team and in the league. i won't be shocked if wright becomes a superstar really. my gut just would always say " nooooooo! " whenever i watched him being interviewed. Something is very off putting about the guy to me.
Good video!! You are missing an important point however. Wright never played any games in the 2020-21 season. Other top player did including going to Europe. The 2021-22 season then was not exceptional for a player of his talents..
I am from MTL. Right was compared to Drouin (picked 3rd overall) and not Suzuki. Not very fast, lot's of turn-overs, no grit and absolutely zero defensive skills as to Slaf is compared to Josh Anderson with a better hockey IQ who can actually protect the puck, fast on his skates and cares about his performances. One is willing to go get the puck and the other is waiting for the puck to be given to him. That is the biggest difference.
That stare only helps explain why he went 4th. So many of these kids have grown up with silver spoons and coddled. They need to have some humility and learn to be humble and appreciative.
I sincerely hope that Shane works his ass off to be the best hockey player he can be and prove his critics wrong. That being said I believe Montreal made the best choice for their needs.
The Habs made a decision based on their roster and weaknesses, Slaf was the better pick for them. It was a business decision like the picks that the Devils and Coyotes also made passing on Wright. Does that mean that those teams don't think that he's a good player? Of course not. I don't think it had anything to do with his character. Just a hockey decision that's best for their team.
I disagree. Montreal went another way. They could have taken Wright but instead opted to make a trade for another center. There is a reason for it and I am sure Slaf had a lot to do with it in regards to his overall play compared to Wrights the past few months. Why let go a center when you know a player like Wright would have been that player. Plus even if a team doesn't need a positioned player they could have made huge gains just by having him on teh team for future trades. So I think the attitude was a part of it. Montreal already went through past players with that same sense of "entitlement" like Patch, Subban and even Patrick Roy.
I believe Slavkofsky is the best player right now. Wright will pay dividends as a 2C behind an electric Matty Beniers. I don't blame teams passing on him but if he turns into a Bergeron it could look very bad later on. I prefer Cooley to Wright just because he's an offensive guy and offence is fun. Defence win championships on the other hand...
I think that’s the case too. Wright just wasn’t the player type that the rope 3 teams needed. I don’t think some of the quotes & his play in the last year helped him out.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 I totally see where you're coming from, as a leafs fan nothing would make me happier (other than a cup) than to see Montreal screw up yet another 1st round pick.. That being said even if he's a bust you can't teach that size. He'll be hard to play against of he figures out how to us it he could be a great player
Montreal is stacked with defense prospects that will soon pass Romanov ...They are all young and developing ...Habs weakness is in forward development positions that can score ...
The facts don't care about your feelings. Wright will be playing with a chip on his shoulder. Slavkosky wasnt even close to the best player in this draft
@@dipsydoodle5722 Facts... exceptional status players don't get passed on no matter what the team's needs may be. Fact.....Wright's ego earned him the 4th spot. Shane Wright is in for a rude awakening in Seattle... grown men don't deal kindly with guys like this. If he doesn't readjust his attitude he will sink without a trace.
I like your statement, but it just attests to where Wright is mentally at this time in his career. He needs to get past this stuff, because you need to forget real quickly in the NHL in order to be successful. Although, I admire his competitiveness and fury!
When people are So shore that they are going to be #1 in the draft and it doesn't happen ? I'm would think that it could play with your mind and emotions that could be a good thing or a bad thing it is now the person does with it !I hope that he becomes a great hockey player !Thanks for your time and video Keep up the good work and I am a Habs can for 50years and yes I am really a truly a good fan.I don't have a bad team, I love a good game of hockey to watch !Thanks again for your time today
He’s 18. He’s a kid. Too much speculation by negative minded fans. Full grown men praying on the downfall and failures of a kid says everything about the current state of our society. Who didn’t have an attitude at 18 while playing competitive sports??? Geez. Now he gets to play with and be mentored by men. As long as he holds down a full time roster spot in the NHL, he’ll be a success. Give the KID a break. Best of luck Shane. As a fan of the sport I hope you develop into a top line player. 👏
Can’t agree more. This is simply the nature of the situation around him. That’s all the draft is also, it’s a glorified TV show. The higher you go in the draft the more rope you may have in your organization, but at the end of the day. If you do the things that separate yourself, you will find your way. At the end of your career, no one will judge you by your draft position if you had success.
@@dpendsonwhat2441 Well, as far I haven't seen 'that kind of attitude' to have anyone else among the drafties this year. Except for Isaac Howard talking about being the best looking guy (he must have been joking 😀). And of course, there are some Yakupovs, Drouins... and Wrights now and then. The world can't be perfect.
Very good video and well put! I believe that Wright is very young and has to get beyond his attitude. When you are granted a status, it will either continue to make players even MORE hungry to succeed (Sid, McDavid). On the converse, if the player isn't coached/mentored properly they become problems on the scoreboard or in the dressing room...
I personally been watching him since 15, his game regressed the last season for sure. Think the time off because of Covid hurt his game. I hope he makes those teams regret not taking him though, he’s a super nice kid
They won’t regret anything. He’s going no where in the NHL. Maybe he’ll be a 4th liner. He’s going to be a bust. His attitude problems are a huge factor. And that year off just hurt his head game. He’s going no where.
After hearing about Slaf and Wright and hearing how both of them played I expected MTL to take slafkovsky or Cooley, they usually are good defensively so there was little need for him. The biggest problem MTL has is offense and relying too much on goaltending. slaf is a start to fixing the offense issue and with price being injured they're being forced to play a complete game, really excited to see how that impacts the team in the future
He can still have a very successful career. The NHL draft is a ritual that generates publicity but in the grand scheme of things the order doesn't mean that much. Teams have different needs.
Way to much of an ego to fit with the CH and this coming from a CH fan for over 50 years. Better than Slavo but just like P.K. Subban, he couldn't fit his head through the jersey.
I disagree when you say Montreal needed someone flashy. They needed someone more developed. Slaf was the best player in this draft. Wright has the potential to be the best player in his draft class. That’s the difference IMO. Plus Montreal is in a rebuild and Montreal isn’t a city where they will except a 5 year rebuild. Fans gave them this past season and will give them this up coming season. But they won’t give them 3 in a row. Unlike Toronto there fans enjoy watching a successful team that wins playoff rounds🤣🤣(shots fired) LOL, JK!
And I disagree with you. Hughes literally said they are not looking for the most NHL ready player at 18 but the one who will become the best player of this draft 5,10 years from now and the fans agree. That player is not Wright
You kind of glossed over New Jersey. Not only Hischier, but Jack Hughes and Dawson Mercer, with Hughes and Hischier being first overall picks. So the last thing they need is another high-ranked center.
I won't speak to him specifically but I can say that if you are a GM looking for your next star you want someone with confidence and a bit cocky but also that is willing to learn and improve. If you think you are perfect and the best you aren't going to listen. If you want to BE the best all you are going to want is to improve and listen. Take the best of what is being offered to you. There's a big difference there.
@@truenorth2995 He's been told since he was 15, that he would go #1 in the 2022 draft. Then all of a sudden a prospect named Slaf with linebacker size, dominates against non traditional hockey countries and puts up worse numbers in a league to which other teenagers have done better. The CHL is still the best developmental league. 54% of players in the NHL came from the CHL and people are saying Slaf is better because he played against men? I guarantee he's bigger size wise than most of the men in Liiga, so it isn't so hard for him to stand out against men of average size. Who knows? maybe Montreal is right and he will become a first line player in this league or maybe 5 years from now, we will look back and realize this is why Ken Hughes got fired.
@@jeffpedler6094 Being told that you will go 1st in the 2022 draft 3 years ahead. And being awarded exceptional status at 15 yrs old, does not guarantee that it's the way things will go. Remember he got passed on by 3 teams not only Montréal. The third team ( Arizona) picked smaller Cooley, who is also a centre. Wonder why?!?!? Plus the fact that a lot of teams had him low on their lists raises red flags.
Should be interesting to see how he does in Windsor. Went to his debut game tonight and he did well. 1g 1a. What I liked was that some of our other guys turned it on in a 7-4 win over a very, very good Saginaw team. Let's go Spits!
In a sense Wright was the right pick and in fact a safe pick. But a team like Montreal needs a flash in the pan, something to get the fans excited. You need good leaders in the locker room and it feels like they took the right choice with their man who can be a force on the ice and a big influence in the locker room as he matures and develops.
They got Dach which they hope will floorish in Montreal. The transaction was set before the draft and Dach is bigger and probably better (right now) than Wright. So you get a bigger size center with a bit of experience and a big talented winger with a good attitude (both with speed): Habs needed size (to complement Suzuki) and talent. That's not about having something against Wright, just better filling the needs they have.
Thing is because your exceptional at 15 and 16 doesn’t always translate to exceptional as you get older. He really should have dominated in his draft year? I think being 8th in scoring in your draft year hurt him. After all being given exceptional status to start his ohl career he really wasn’t exceptional to end it.
I've heard some folks report that Wright had been focusing & working on trying to improve his D game and his responsibility & decision making in all 3 zones, improving his overall game, and by doing so his O production didn't explode with more energy & effort being put into those other areas (a bit like how Phil Danault O production had a certain consistent level until he went to LA where he had more freedom & opportunity to generate O instead of primarily being a shut down D type every shift)
@@thetez96 I hope for his sake that’s the case. I did hear that some scouts found he didn’t play hard enough and would float up at the blue line in some games. I too heard his d game was not great either. But like I said hopefully he has a good nhl career.
@@elviscanadien2895 as a Kraken fan I certainly hope so as well, I have my doubts as to if he has the O abilities & creativity to become a super star ish caliber player, but if game & mental acuity becomes as well rounded as many project he should be a pretty good to star caliber player with how GM Ron wants to build team & have them play, especially if (hopefully when) Sea adds the right type & caliber top 6 Wingers and top 4 D man to play with Wright & Beniers. Think (and hoping) I lean bit more towards that Wright is just confident in & believes in himself (as u want all players to be for most part) and learns to better handle things in appearance as he hopefully matures Vs being an arrogant, conceded & spoiled diva, BC if he is, instead of vast majority of greater Seattle natives hugely embracing & supporting him, they'll want him outta here ASAP, those types never have & never will fit or last with this area's culture & attitudes. Do have to try to reasonably factor in fact he did miss playing competitive hockey for 1-1.5 seasons or whatever at 2nd worst possible time (1st being actual draft year) and very likely took him some time to knock rust off and eventually start getting back into swing of things. In some of more complete vids (not highlight/hype only ones) I've seen, I can see where some folks could develop concerns about his effort, D play, mental acuity, etc, but u also see him eventually progress to previous levels & even improve upon them throughout season, still see some lapses but also see a good amount of pretty good D positioning & play he also a solid amount of the time he quickly turned into quality transitions for good scoring opportunities, similarly see his mental acuity, decision making & positioning in transition and in the O zone take some good steps forward. Is it quite as good & consistent for as long as would have liked to seen, no, but def more so as he played more and can def see he has those abilities at high enough level & often enough (which match his game & toolbox pretty well) to have a lot of faith in his ability to eventually consistently do so pretty successfully at the NHL level.
@@thetez96 very good I enjoy your prospective👍🏻. I think not being taken #1 and being in Seattle will definitely take some of the pressure off him. I think even if he ends up being a 2nd or 3rd line center what is wrong with that, absolutely nothing.
@@elviscanadien2895 with how good Beniers looked in his 10 game stint last season, how he absolutely towered above every other young player at development camp, the leadership, engagement, etc (most believe he'll either get the "C" sometime this season or almost certainly next season onwards) he showed there as well, something would have to go terribly wrong with Beniers (who's now listed at 6'2" Vs 6'1" draft year, and who's shot, scoring & O abilities have noticeably improved since his draft season) and or exceptionally well for Wright to have a good shot at being #1 C, but hope they both maintain a friendly, fun spirit of competition to earn #1 C position. Think they see the duo as a #1 A and #1 B Center pair for the long haul at this point, and if Wright does manage to pretty successfully model his game after Bergearon, Kopitar, etc... That should free Beniers up to play more aggressively on O while still playing quality D overall. Wright def seemed extremely motivated at Development camp, arguably too motivated, trying to do too much on O & over thinking things (D was pretty good), he just needs to play his game within his abilities, put the effort into improving every aspect he can, learning and letting those things he works on naturally come together incrementally until it all hopefully clicks into & remains in place.
This is the best thing that could have happened for Wright by not being drafted first and going to Montreal (the pressure would be crazy) he will have greater success in Seattle where the pressure wont be so intense on him , Kraken got themselves a pretty good player .
Good stuff. Yes, Shane Wright will be a great player with Seattle one day. Maybe all this noise will ultimately help his humility and focus. Still makes sense that he went 4th.
Going 4th overall isn't really much of a step down. Somebody should have advised Shane Wright that going #1 wasn't guaranteed. And like it says in the video here; the teams picking #2 and #3 had their eyes on someone else. I know Wright wanted to go to Montreal but there is a big plus to going #4: Montreal would be a pressure cooker. Wright can go to a team that will let him develop--and have a longer NHL career.
People are just guessing why he dropped there is no definite proof… could be he missed a season in ohl could be a bad attitude . But overall everything is speculation 😂
Exactly. Like I said, who knows what went on in those draft interviews, but what we can see is what he’s said throughout last season & his dip in play. Hope he comes out swinging next year
You can argue anything, anytime with the "it's all speculation, there is no definite proof" tack. Why have sports analyst's shows then? Why does anyone bother to watch the opinion of non-experts (those who haven't excelled at or coached at high level in any particular sport at least the minor league or college level). Why does a Skip Bayless get to make millions of dollars a year with non-expert, often purely speculative (and purposely controversial) commentary?
@@Nate1995 Those were rhetorical questions just to make a point. There are better ways to be entertained than watching bh Clueless sputter his frequent bs and drivel. Pity that there are enough viewers to keep them in their stead, which is not nearly as maddening as the level of "unearned" arrogance, if you will, that their opinion is intrinsically worthy and, furthermore, worthy of making that kind of money because in their minds they are not only, or even primarily, entertainers.
hes a young player i have seen lots of first overall pics and it usually takes a few years to get their feet under them. He will be a good player but he needs time.
4th overall is the new 1st apparently… can’t malice Makar went 4th. Byram too. I hope byram will blossom into a superstar in the next season or two. He’s been through a lot in the last year or two….
I don't have a crystal ball. No one else does either, so we'll see. My intuitive sense is that Wright will have a great career. He's so solid and so skilled. Not sure he'll be a superstar but it's a possibility. With his defense, his floor is high and his ceiling very high. He's absolutely capable of scoring with the best of 'em. I see Slafovsky as the riskier pick. He may be great but we've not seen enough of him to make that assessment. People tend toward recency bias. Slaf had a great Olympics and World Championships performance but where was that ability prior to those events? At the end of the day, the draft is a craps shoot. Maybe Slafovsky will wind up in the Hall of Fame. Maybe Wright will wash out. I think that's the least likely of combined possibilities but it's possible. More likely, Wright will be at least solid, maybe great while Slafovsky is less likely to warrant the high pick. Take away the recent competition against lesser talent and he'd have been fortunate to go in the first round. I'd love the guy further down in the draft but not number one overall. I'd have felt perfectly comfortable with Wright in that spot.
This kind of reminds me of Laine and Matthews, when Laine was over confident and saying he was the best guy in the draft and some attitude/personally rumors and Matthews staying pretty silent and mature. This should be fun to watch develop and see what happens
I like Wright and that Firkus kid but Wright i think is actually going to have a tough time putting up numbers because the kraken have several decent center prospects which might put Wright on the third or fourth line and that spells disaster point wise.SO idk what the coaches will do perhaps move a couple center to the wings or maybe even convert Wright to the wing.
I kinda disagree. The year Kadri scored 30 goals with the Leafs.....he played 3C. But he was the LWer on the PP, scoring 12 goals. Good players will get lots of ice time. As you suggest, having too many good centres isn't really a problem.
Why would anyone want to go 1st overall? You're literally going on the worst team in the nhl and stuck with the burden of changing the team for the netter to get a cup.
I'm from mtl and we don't want neither need someone flashy.. ask price Weber and Kovalev how the pressure is out here in the 514! I don't think Shane would have been able to handle it.. being a kraken is the best thing that could ever happened to him trust me on that.. we are really hard on our player .. imagine a 1st pick 😔 from a proud montrealer!
Every one who thinks Wright would have been a better choice. Do you really think you know better? NHL teams put countless hours of time, effort and money in scouting and development of players. They take everything in to account. As you know. MTL staff knows more about these two players than any of us here will ever know! Still it is taking risks. Some riskier than others. How many games have you seen from Juraj that you really can make the conclusion that Shane is better. He played in Europe so I guess about none. You know numbers but as we know they don't tell everything. Just putting my 5 cents in here.
You know who else went #4 ? Adam Larsson. And as far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best defenseman in the NHL. And now with Bjorkstrand there, and an experienced Eberle to all show him the ropes in this league, Seattle is going to be a fun team to watch as they climb the ladder in the standings. It won't happen over night but it will happen as quickly as the chemistry and ability to gel comes. I really like what I see there. And I'm not a Kraken fan. The fans there are great and deserve a team that creates some excitement! Cheers! Wishing them success. Great management and hockey minds there too. Well respected.
Why did Shane Wright go Number 4?....Because Montreal has enough small forwards and wanted size and a power forward. New Jersey wanted a D--man. Arizona preferred to go with an offensively flashy American, to go with Matthews when he gets there....So Seattle winds up with a bona fide 200 footer that has future Captain written all over him and is the kind of player most coaches would love to have on their team...Not flashy, but I am thinking Nugent--Hopkin's type of player. Seattle have 2 very good building block's down the middle now. Next draft? D-man or winger. Ron Francis knows what he is doing. He is not a dumb. People are overthinking this........Like me? I just typed a whole paragraph...hahaha.
I figured NJ would pass on him, as they’re already stacked at the center position. But a team in Arizona’s position not taking him is still mind-boggling to me.
Reminds me of Yakupov, some didn’t like his interviews and didn’t consider him 1 st overall, but it didn’t matter anyways for 2012, because many were busts
I think the intriguing thing is Wright's feelings towards Arizona. Slafkofsky and Nemec play different positions to Wright, but in taking Cooley at #3 Arizona stated that Wright wasn't even the best centre in the draft, let alone the best player.. I'm looking forward to a rivalry developing between Wright and Cooley more than Wright and Slafkofsky
U want a viral video ? Edit the Shane Wright Draft into the Draft Day movie with Kevin Costner. Where ever GM was panicking over the potential #1 getting passed over lol
Again, it’s all perspective. We don’t know what happened before closed doors. He strikes me as a confident player who has to deal with a ton of hype & pressure. When the eyes are all on you like that, it’s hard to be perfect
I was watching hoping the Kraken passed on him and we'd have the chance to draft him with our 5th overall pick... however our off season from the pit of Hell would never have allowed that.
Wait a minute, saying that you believe that you're the best player in the draft, and you believe that you should be taken 1st overall is not confidence, but cockiness? He played pretty well for a majority of the season and has elite hockey IQ. I don't know of a player that was supposed to go 1st overall and didn't, not be a bit salty about it, despite their solid play throughout the season. Also, saying that he lost a bit of popularity due to his supposed attitude problems is disingenuous. Many incredibly prideful players are incredibly popular, so yeah. I personally didn't hear Shane Wright speak much, but the little I saw didn't give me the impression that he was this incredibly cocky player you seem to claim he is. Maybe I missed something 🤷♂️.
1st, 2nd, 4th…makes no difference at the end of the day. Slav is a perfect fit for MTL. They haven’t had a player like that for years/decades. Wright will have a solid career in an amazing city, a very well funded expansion team and away from the big city limelight. He just needs to keep his attitude in check. That’s what ultimately pushed him to 4th.
I've always totally disagreed with the narrative of a player having an "attitude problem". Like oh wow Shane thinks he's the best player in the draft, should that be a surprise or a bad thing? Would you prefer a player to not want to go first overall or not believe in themselves to be the best player?
To anyone that says things like ''This might be the best thing that happened to Wright. He can master his craft far away from the glaring spotlight of Montreal'', I say BULLSH!T!!!! Yes there is more pressure in Montreal but you know what? If you can take this pressure and strive there is not a single other place that worships it's stars like Montreal. Where in Canada have there been ovations like this team's alumni get. Constant 10 minutes+ ovations for their legends alive or dead. You don't see that in any other arenas. NEVER!!! When was the last state funeral held for a Leafs player or Canucks player held like the one they just had for The Flower Mr. Guy Lafleur? Heck Bill Russell just past and I don't see state funerals in Boston for him like that. I get the pressure but the level of glory is so much higher also.
I had to listen twice... You said Wright is "a good 2-way player" ... are you talking about the same Wright who does not backcheck in the playoffs? The same Wright that Junior scout "Snake" from Val d'or said that "to compare him to Bergeron is a big exageration"?
Slafkovsky is more likely to be a bust when you consider his hockey sense. Wright although he may not have any elite physical skills, does have elite hockey IQ, which is something that will keep you around for a while in this league.
@@hockeypsychology As a Devils fan this is why I really didn't want us to draft him. But all our fans just saw a guy with size and wanted him. If he had been available and we passed on him they would have rioted.
Idk Kucherov has a shit attitude and did ok, I think some people forget how it was to be 15-18 getting told everyday that you are the absolute 1st OA by everyone and how impressionable you are at this age. He might be a bit cocky but he seems also down to earth and the draft shook him a bit, but he is probably going to be a great player.
I agree with that too. We beg for these players to have character & personality like other stars in NFL, NBA,etc yet when a player shows some of that personality, they get torched for it in some fashion
Kucherov = Confident ( His coaches, teammates and fans love his attitude ) What in your brain sees Kucherov as having a "sh*t attitude" ? Never in his career has Kucherov displayed any arrogance or cockiness like Evander Kane for example.

@@karandeosingh2356 no he doesn’t. BUT, if there’s one thing we’ve learned when drafting Yakupov, is to not take the guy who’s already in over his head without having played a game with the big boys.
@@karandeosingh2356 Don't need to live with him. Just watching him for these past years, from the moment he received exceptional status at 15yrs old, all the way to this past season. I saw an unexceptional player with ok skills, average skating with few good flashes here and there , disappear when the game gets physical, finished 8th overall in the OHL with an ok to average season. And total bust in the playoffs. Not exceptional status worthy.
No one is simply guaranteed something in life. These teams have been doing this a long time, and drafties should be humble to even be in that position.
Shane Wright should develop into a two way specialist. A Hart/Selke Candidate that leads a high end PK and plays the PP in certain situations. That's what will make Kraken Stanley Cup contenders and make those around him decorated and complete. The mark of a great leader is the necessity to win as a team. I think if he looks at it the way Fedorov did when Scotty Bowman took over in Detroit, Seattle will not only get it's cup, he will be remembered as one of the greats of the game. Good luck Shane being on the Pacfic Ocean west coast should be good for his personality.
When you see how a guy like Pierre luv dubios can screw over an organization with his ego I imagine a lot of teams are concerned about someone who thinks he's the best player.
Still bothers to me to this day the Habs didn’t draft him. I don’t see Dach filling the 2c role and as much as I like Nick, the jury’s still out on whether he’s a true 1c. Hugo should’ve stayed the course, drafting Shane and then using the Isles pick to draft Nazar. Ps- hope I’m wrong.. but this is how I see it right now.
The only thing that bothered me about Shane was he seemed as arrogant as Patrik Laine was before Laine's draft. If he turns out that he is that good I loved every player that Seattle got this year in the draft and they may be a real powerhouse in 5 or 6 years.
This might be the best thing that happened to Wright. He can master his craft far away from the glaring spotlight of Montreal. He can focus solely on his game without having to be the face of the Canadiens.
Agreed. Playing in MTL is no joke. In terms of pressure & development, this could be the best thing that happened to him
The developpment team in Montreal is a totally new group led by Adam Nicholas who's an All-Star in that field.
But unfortunately, most of the media and the fans see it that way so they'll have those expectations of him
Seriously, who buys a jersey of a guy their team hasn’t even drafted yet?

I'm from Montreal, been a fan since 85, and I have not purchased an active player's jersey since they traded my man Chris Nilan to the Rangers.

I think so too. Every team got what’s best for them now
Accurate 👌
The coyotes took the player that answered “yes I’ll stay past my first 3 years” after many said “hell no”
i really don't think so. mtl messed up here. first Wright played in arguably the second best league in the world behind the NHL.
Thanks for watching!
I heard part of the reason he fell is because in his interviews teams grilled him for taking a year off during the pandemic rather than playing in Europe and weren't satisfied with the answers he was giving, which led them to believe he had an attitude problem.
Interesting….
I heard similar, on 32 thoughts I believe it was
Why would a kid feel compelled to go to Europe to play? Sounds ridiculous to me. Good for Auston #34. Not everyone wants to do this.
@@jeffreym.8957 Because it allowed him to play rather than sit on his ass?
@@jeffreym.8957 Guess it depends on how bad you want it? I mean the top 2% make the pro's. If he gives a half ass answer that shows lazy or entitlement it will sway a team to pass on him.
Great video and perspective. I've heard rumblings that Wright is having more tantrums now in Seattle....I'm trying to find some of those videos now
Something that has been a big trend the last few years in the NFL is that college players who do extremely well as freshman, but arent eligible for the draft for 2 more years seem to lose energy and don't produce the same and fall in the draft. But end uo being great picks. Sometimes the risk of an injury sees these guys start to play conservative because they know they are going to get paid and dont want an injury to risk losing it all.
Very interesting…
I think the big thing with his development is he essentially took a full year off, and a lot of rumours regarding the fact that his work ethic was terrible.
@@rmaguire1000 and that's why Seattle getting him can be great because hehas bee told he is the next McDavid since he was 15 and 3 teams passed on him. So maybe it will jump start his work ethic.
Also I’ve heard people say he’d been told his biggest area to improve was defensively so he focused more on that to be a true 200’ player.
I live in Kingston, I watched Shane Wright in Junior... I was surprised he was picked as early as 4th overall.
Shane seems to be a consistent if not particularly flashy player, so seeing him as a 4th pick is probably about as high as he should be
The draft interview, and mental evaluations, are hugely important.
I didn’t even know this happened. If that’s true, that’s insane
@@hockeypsychology it's true screen shots don't disapear with his deletes.
i think what helped slafkovsky with regard to some character building, if i may say so (i don't know shane wright at all, so im not making comparisons, just explaining about slafkovsky), is that he went on to play in the finish league. he left home at the age of 14 to follow his professional career, he has played in finish junior league for three seasons before playing in the men's league last season. for a 15-16 year old kid that is massive to be half a continent away from your family, new language, different hockey coaching, new culture... and then to play in turku against men at 17-18 dealing with struggling numbers. ...he is 18 but he has already gone thru a period of unfulfilled expectations in tps turku as well as his stellar moments in the olympics. but basically he's been thru it all on his own since he was 14-15 years old.
Wright’s response to Slaf exhibited his immaturity. Playing well in Seattle will show his maturity…hopefully. Slaf already exhibits this maturity.
as a habs fan im so happy we got the salvskwatch. He's a hard worker and for an 18 year old he didnt have to bad of a first showing. it wasnt spectacular by any means but im confident he'll do great things
16 points last 22 games, 🎉🎉
All I can say is that the fan base here in Seattle are over the moon to have Wright, I'm confident our veterans won't let any kind of overconfidence slide. As a player fit having Beniers and Wright as the 1C 2C of the future is incredible.
I bet. Seattle had a good player slip to them. They have a strong 1,2 punch up the middle for years to come
Yanni Gourde will put Shane over his knee if necessary 😂
there are stories floating around Montreal that during the interviews, Wright and Slafkovkiy were shown deficiencies in their games - Wright seemed offended while Slafkovsky took it as a challenge to improve - those kinds of things are the difference makers - good for Wright actually to get under the tutelage of Ron Francis - I think Wright has the chance to be a player like Francis used to be...1700+ games and points?
I really like your analysis, the only thing he can do now is prove people wrong on the ice. Look at the stare he does At the end
Thanks for watching! I think he will end up having a pretty solid career
Who stares at someone/a team that didn’t choose you when you think it was appropriate?
An insecure child with a big ego.
That stare only helps explain why he went 4th. So many of these kids have grown up with silver spoons and coddled. They need to have some humility and learn to be humble and appreciative.
Now make a video about why Slafkovsky DID go first overall
I sincerely hope that Shane works his ass off to be the best hockey player he can be and prove his critics wrong. That being said I believe Montreal made the best choice for their needs.
I think he will be just fine
Gm’s are smarter than we give them credit for. Jesse Poolparty fell in his draft year for the same reasons.
Literally the movie Draft Day.
Bo Callahan all over again...
Agreed
Slaf was a garbage pick. Habs let a superstar center go play for a team that really shouldn't exist.
I think Slavkovsky will be the bust. He did well at the watered down Olympics. There will be no pressure in Seattle.

How can anyone call a player a bust before they play one NHL game?
He’s 18.

Very good video and well put! I believe that Wright is very young and has to get beyond his attitude. Love that Shane Wright canadiens jersey tik tok at the end. lol
The best thing happened...he wouldn't be able to handle the pressure in Montreal,it would hurt his career
He can still have a very successful career. The NHL draft is a ritual that generates publicity but in the grand scheme of things the order doesn't mean that much. Teams have different needs.
Exactly. At the end of the day, everyone still has to prove themselves
Way to much of an ego to fit with the CH and this coming from a CH fan for over 50 years. Better than Slavo but just like P.K. Subban, he couldn't fit his head through the jersey.
im sure he was pissed because he's missing out on some cash.
Agreed
You kind of glossed over New Jersey. Not only Hischier, but Jack Hughes and Dawson Mercer, with Hughes and Hischier being first overall picks. So the last thing they need is another high-ranked center.
This is true too. A lot of high end talent there
How can you determine if a rookie is a bust less than 10 games into his first season? That's insane.
The CHL is still the best developmental league. 54% of players in the NHL came from the CHL and people are saying Slaf is better because he played against men? I guarantee he's bigger size wise than most of the men in Liiga, so it isn't so hard for him to stand out against men of average size.

Leadership? Wright was the youngest captain in the ohl, and captained canada to gold in the under 18's.
Slaf. MVP na olympiáde a bronzová medaila medzi mužmi a to mal 17 rokov.👍🇸🇰😃 7 gólov v 7 zápasoch.
Maybe he will be good, maybe he will be average, maybe he will be a bust. Only time will tell
@@kpax45 Maybe he'll be the best player ever. Only time will tell.
Maybe it’s just me but as a habs fan living in ottawa I get an Alexander Daigle vibe about Wright, I’m happy with their choice.

Wright could be the next Marcel Dionne and Slafkovsky the next Guy Lafleur. Both of them are very good.
Only time will tell!
hes a young player i have seen lots of first overall pics and it usually takes a few years to get their feet under them. He will be a good player but he needs time.

I agree. MTL needs a player of size like Slaf. I also think Slaf will thrive with a guy like suzuki
its almost like the movie "Draft day" played out.
Pretty close to it lol
4th overall is the new 1st apparently… can’t malice Makar went 4th. Byram too. I hope byram will blossom into a superstar in the next season or two. He’s been through a lot in the last year or two….
Byron is low key a stud too
Also Lucas Raymond going 4th overall in 2019. Too early to tell anything concrete, but he’s looking to be a steal as well
@@ryanthomas5962 2019 was byram, so 20? Or 21?
As a Devils fan, hopefully Luke Hughes follows this path.
I wish my team had Shane Wright. He's solid, he's gonna be a star for 2024-25
uhhh no
I don't have a crystal ball.
I heard the opposite, that many scouts think Wright has a low ceiling.
I’m still waiting for Filip Zadina to fill the Habs nets with pucks like he said he would after they passed on him.
The day will come….. lol
I think they have over-analysed Wright's attitude, frankly havent heard of the other kids getting grilled like this
Good point, that may be the case
I'm from mtl and we don't want neither need someone flashy.. ask price Weber and Kovalev how the pressure is out here in the 514! I don't think Shane would have been able to handle it.. being a kraken is the best thing that could ever happened to him trust me on that.. we are really hard on our player .. imagine a 1st pick 😔 from a proud montrealer!
Wow a real life Bo Callahan.
Life imitates art
Every one who thinks Wright would have been a better choice. Do you really think you know better? NHL teams put countless hours of time, effort and money in scouting and development of players. They take everything in to account. As you know. MTL staff knows more about these two players than any of us here will ever know! Still it is taking risks. Some riskier than others. How many games have you seen from Juraj that you really can make the conclusion that Shane is better. He played in Europe so I guess about none. You know numbers but as we know they don't tell everything. Just putting my 5 cents in here.
I agree with you. However, I am excited as a Kracken fan to have Shane. I think it might just give him the motivation to outperform expectations.
Agreed
Slaf = team guy
Fail for Nail didn’t go as planned….

Great point. Hopefully those teams turn a corner and start playing competitive hockey come April
Or Arizona took the guy they'd invested the most time in.

U want a viral video ? Edit the Shane Wright Draft into the Draft Day movie with Kevin Costner. Where ever GM was panicking over the potential #1 getting passed over lol
He seemed really mature and sharp to me. Was disappointed that he didn't fall to my team. People Are probably just jealous
Ahreed
I've always totally disagreed with the narrative of a player having an "attitude problem". Like oh wow Shane thinks he's the best player in the draft, should that be a surprise or a bad thing? Would you prefer a player to not want to go first overall or not believe in themselves to be the best player?
Especially because the thing he said wasn’t even that bad there have been sports players who are much more cocky and nobody cares
I'm more worried of Slafsovsky than him.

@@karandeosingh2356 Don't need to live with him. Just watching him for these past years, from the moment he received exceptional status at 15yrs old, all the way to this past season. And total bust in the playoffs. Not exceptional status worthy.
Who has the better career…Shane Wright or Quinton Byfield?
I think Byfield
No one is simply guaranteed something in life. These teams have been doing this a long time, and drafties should be humble to even be in that position.
As a Kraken fan I can't wait to have Shane Wright prove this wrong and kick the Calgary Flames' arse next season. See you then.
Leaf Fan here & I can’t wait to see
Him do the same! NHL needs a good story like this
I was disappointed that Montreal didn’t take him. Now, I’m not. Slafkovsky has been the right choice.
Let’s come back to it before the playoffs.
I almost feel bad for the Habs fans that wasted money on his jersey
Me too. Great memes tho
I don't! It was speculated for several weeks that Montreal may not take Wright and they didn't
Wright = Josh Ho-Sang

The fact he had a problem not being picked first proves why he didn't go first.

The only thing that bothered me about Shane was he seemed as arrogant as Patrik Laine was before Laine's draft. If he turns out that he is that good I loved every player that Seattle got this year in the draft and they may be a real powerhouse in 5 or 6 years.
