When you create a “specialized” market, the prices are usually higher.
Just like how things are marketed to gamers, i.e. “gaming” mouse, “gaming” chair, “gamer” energy drink, etc.
There probably isn’t any difference in how IKEA’s product is made, compared to a gaming glass pad. It’s just these gaming oriented companies are marketing it to a specific audience and not as a general product. We all then fall for it, or at least the majority do, and boom! You got yourself an expensive product, that is cheap to make and you have somewhat high yields in profit. I say “somewhat” because if they are only marketing it to a specific market, it’s audience reach will be much lower and out of that audience, not everyone is going to get one from them. So, high profit, but low sale volumes.

Bought today after watching your video!
I regularly use a Raiden Mid by Artisan, I am a competitive Apex Legends player, with several hours of gameplay and Kovaak.
Just recently I was considering purchasing a glass pad but I was hesitant, given the excessive prices on a product that I wasn't sure I would like, given its particularity.
I've already had the opportunity to try the glass "tray-pad" I bought from Ikea today and I have no words: certainly faster than the Raiden Mid, but with a control that I would never have expected given the greater speed.
I never thought I'd say it, but I much prefer it to the Raiden Mid and it makes me laugh to think that Ikea didn't market it as a real gaming pad, it would have been a crazy success!
Paid exactly half because last pieces, I'll take at least a spare pair! It will definitely become my main pad, I've tried a lot of pad but this Ikea tray is marvelous. Still speachless.

If you do, you won't benefit at all but get worse, cause there is lot of speed and less control compare even to a very fast cloth pad like the Raiden, might not fit your needs.

For glass pads, I'd recommend using UHMW(ultra high molecular weight) polyethelyene. CS Hyde makes a sheet with acrylic adhesive backing, I use that with a hand held sheet metal powerpunch to make dots. They last for months and stay consistent. PTFE will wear down and get flat spots after a while and it will leave a residue on the mousepad. UHMW polyethylene has a similar coefficient of friction to PTFE but it's about 3 times harder.

Hey man, i've send you a message on Instagram. Anyways, i've brought the pad today. I've been using it for a couple of hours. Very good pad wtf. Also its very controled for a glass pad. Im impressed. I need a sleeve and some dot skates. Couple of questions. I use a microfiber cloth to clean it, its ok? The surface that is for the mouse is the frosted one, aka the back of the serving tray. Not the front which is glossy? I had a hard time to notice the difference. Using a phylina s450 mouse, 3395 sensor, 1mm lod, all good. Thank you. Looking forward to your answers.

    • @mel0nFPS
      @mel0nFPS  Год назад +1

Hey, sorry for not getting back to you, I like never check IG so I totally missed it!
      To answer your questions:
      - You can clean the pad with a microfiber cloth or a soft sponge, just don't use anything too abrasive
      - You want to use the bottom frosted side of the pad, the front is untreated and glossy and will have a bunch of unnecessary friction on some mouse skates!
      - If you're looking for new skates I'd recommend getting the Xraypad Obsidian skates, those are the best on the market for glass pads and they feel amazing on the IKEA GLASS!
      - For arm sleeves I personally really like the Focus Pro Sleeve but any arm sleeve will work for this pad. People usually get sports arm bands off of Amazon and use those since they're very similar to "eSports" arm sleeves!
Hope that helps! If you have any other questions let me know!

Also calling them “accidental design decisions” is pretty degrading considering the thought that went into this product.
The edges are rounded to prevent people from hurting themselves. You can remove the handles so you can properly clean it should something spill and get in there, or should you need to fix the hold on the handles. Thus all edges need to be rounded.
