  • Learn how to do Kegels breathing exercises without holding your breath with Pelvic Floor Physio Michelle from www.pelvicexercises.com.au Breathing during Kegel exercises is often challenging for men and women especially beginners pelvic floor exercises. Michelle guides you through 2 simple steps for breathing during Kegels to help you avoid breath holding. This Kegel exercise training is suitable for men and women seeking to correct their Kegels training technique.
    Kegel Exercises for Men • Kegel Exercises for Me...
    Kegel Exercises for Women • Kegels Exercises for W...
    Why It's Difficult to do Kegels Breathing
    When you breathe normally, your breathing muscle (diaphragm) and your pelvic floor muscles move up and down together in the same direction in a coordinated manner.
    When you do Kegel exercises and breathe in, your pelvic floor muscles lift upwards while your diaphragm moves down in the opposite direction. The downward movement of your diaphragm creates pressure downwards onto your pelvic floor. This is why you may feel like you can't Kegel and breathe at the same time, especially when you breathe in and your pelvic floor muscles are weak. Many people hold their breath during their exercises to try to overcome this problem.
    How to do Kegels Breathing
    Step 1
    The first step is to breathe out as you just gently contract your pelvic floor muscles. Breathe normally to prepare and as you breathe out, contract and do a gentle kegel exercise at the same time before relaxing your pelvic floor muscles.
    Step 2
    Repeat step 1 by breathing out as you start your exercise and then time keep doing your Kegel exercise as you breathe shallow and soft, not deep. Keep breathing and keep holding your Kegel exercise if you can for up to 10 seconds and then relax.
    Here are the key elements you need to remember for Kegels breathing:
    1. Breathe out as you Kegel
    2. Do your Kegel exercises gently not strongly
    3. Breathe shallow at first and keep contracting your pelvic floor muscles as you keep breathing
    4. Progress to breathing normally during your Kegels breathing training over time.

    Hi Michelle. I just watched your other video for Kegel beginners and also have commented there. I had some doubts about breathing while doing it so watched this after seeing the link you posted in that video. Now I will try the procedure you mentioned here. And now about your videos. You are such an expert in explaining these things that it becomes very simple to understand. You have spent so much of your time and replied to so many viewers and answered their queries in your videos which shows that you are a genuine person and have a real intention to help people. Thanks a ton for your videos and God Bless you.

      Good luck Prafull, I hope the video helps you with breathing and Kegels - this action relies on strength and coordination breathing with the pelvic floor muscles so give yourself time to achieve this, it can take a number of months. You need to be able to hold your pelvic floor against a breath so that it holds against the pressure of everyday actions and activities eg cough. Many thanks for your kind feedback too, I really do appreciate your words and thoughts, cheers

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад

      Hey Adam
      No need to do a set of reverse Kegels if you are fully relaxing your pelvic floor muscles between sets. You can use the reverse kegels technique to make sure your PF is relaxed but no need to do the reps - this really is for guys with PF spasm. You’ll find it’s easier to start your kegel on the exhale but then try to breathe normally as you maintain the contraction. I’m so glad the vids are helpful for you! More for men coming soon cheers

    Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your work! I am definitely getting the hang of it. I had a question with regards to progressing with my breathing and contraction intensity. I am a personal trainer and martial artist, so I am integrating these exercises from a place overall health, not because of any specific dysfunction. I am understanding how to control the intensity of the contraction while still breathing normally. I am noticing that the stronger the contraction, the more pressure I feel specifically in my lower abdomen. It's neither uncomfortable nor painful, my breathing feels good and regular, but it's not exactly like my normal breathing when the pelvic floor is completely relaxed. But it's normal in the sense that I can take belly breaths with a regular, comfortable rhythm. Is that to be expected?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  4 года назад +1

      Yes that's exactly right - it has to change your breathing just a little because your pelvic floor usually moves down as you breathe, keep up your great work!

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад

      @Bruce Graham when you're holding your Kegel contraction try to breathe normally if you can. Some people need to breathe shallow at first as their strength improves. Try not to tense your abdomen, especially above the navel, the lower abs (below the navel may contract automatically and this is normal and absolutely fine). Keep up the great work! 🙏 ❤️

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад

      @Lennart Farris Yes this is completely normal to feel tension develop in the lower tummy with your Kegels and it's not something you need to try to stop. As far as standing goes, this position is a lot more challenging for the pelvic floor muscles which is probably why you're having some difficulty. You can try breathing via nose or mouth. You should find that with practice this becomes easier as the muscles strengthen. Keep up the great work!🥰

      @BASIC BASICS I really suggest against doing traditional abdominal strengthening exercises with pelvic floor problems (e.g. abdominal curls/crunches) as they can make pelvic floor problems worse. Also these types of exercise will not help you lose abdominal fat, it's not possible to spot reduce with exercises, this takes whole body weight loss doing exercises like walking and/or stationary cycling. Great idea to be doing your Kegel exercises, here are some exercises suitable for abdominal toning after hysterectomy and I hope these help you too ruclips.net/video/ZTTIs_9T3a0/видео.html 🙏

    Hi Michelle, I want for my clients to use this breathing and pelvic floor activation during lifts such as squats, overhead press. I ask clients to exhale and lift pelvic floor during the exertion phase. Would that be right? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  4 года назад

      Yes, absolutely, lift and engage pelvic floor with the effort (push, pull, lift) I do the same with clients/patients but never encourage constant bracing throughout the entire exercise session, just with intense effort - hope this helps!

    My midwife told me I should download the Kegel App and follow the exercises daily, which I've been doing. I know I'm doing the relaxation and tension correctly (like stopping flow of urine) but it's now added a 3rd exercise to "hold pressure" and it doesn't explain it clearly. I've been doing it as a sortve pushing technique, as if you would want to make urine come out faster. Am I doing this is correctly Michelle Kenway?

      Do what you can manage at this stage of your pregnancy, up to 10 exercises in a row (up to 5 breaths each exercise). This can be done 3 times a day. You’ll probably find the exercises easier lying down as your pregnancy progresses but try to do some standing earlier in the day if you can as these will have the most benefit for strengthening. But it is easier do do the kegels as you breathe out and release the pushing down on the pelvic floor. As for doing kegels and breathing in and out at the same time - it feels very unnatural and forced. Have I got it wrong ?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  24 дня назад

      @maryowen6094 Yes I hear you, this is the correct way to train the pelvic floor muscles. They won't train effectively with breath holding. Start as I describe with smaller breaths and you will find as your pelvic floor muscles strengthen your ability to breathe during exercises will improve too (not easy at first!). I really liked your tips at the end. Especially breath out when you do your kegels.
    Here's some feedback from my side. Not trying to sound rude.
    1. Please don't use the word Kegel. It's really confusing, because I don't really know what it means and how to activate it. I found it means to hold your pee. So please clarify this.
    2. Words such like shallow really confused me. It can be really difficult to understand what you mean for somebody with English as a 2nd language.
    3. How many should we do in a day and how often?
    4. For people with spinal issues that can't lie on their backs. What's the best strategy to do them? ie sitting/standing?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад +1

      @varuninnz many thanks for your feedback. When I say shallow I mean not breathing too deeply and taking small breaths at first before moving to normal breathing. These exercises should be done 3 times a day, up to 10 exercises in a row, aiming to hold each exercise up to 10 seconds. Yes it's helpful to do these exercises sitting and standing, they need not be done lying down. All the best! 🙏
