- American television sitcom Gimme a Break aired on NBC for six seasons from October 29, 1981, to May 12, 1987. It was created by writers and producers Mort Lachman and Sy Rosen and was produced by Mort Lachman and Associates for the entire series and Alan Landsburg Productions, later renamed as Reeves Entertainment Group. In the early ‘80s, NBC was struggling. The network only had two successful comedies on the air: Different Strokes and The Facts of Life. They were desperate for a hit but after they looked at all their comedy pilots for the upcoming broadcast season, they quickly realized that none of them was going to cut it. They went back to the drawing board and came up with the concept of a show centred on a white widower raising his teenage girls with the help of their black maid. Fred Silverman, then president of NBC, had one specific person in mind to play the role of the maid: a Broadway star named Nell Carter. When approached with the offer, she jumped at the opportunity.

The episode where Nell Carter, Lynne Thigpen and Telma Hopkins singing was amazing
That's one of my faves too! They were throwing down singing!!
I love that episode!
Rest in paradise, Nell Carter. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️
The queen of actress Neil Carter god rest her soul 🙏
Life is so short.
@@Dusty42096 Rosie O'Donnell and Joey Lawrence they have a great actors and actress.
She was definitely an under rated and under used talent! Sad ending to such a bright light
That second theme of gimme a break was that heat!!!!! 🎯 Rip Ms. Carter
It was a real bop.
@@LostSox Frfr!!!!
Yes
Yes Sirrr! That second track was always my favorite. If I had the instrumental I'd spit some heat on that bad boy.
Straight up SLAPS! I remember watching the intro and feeling bad for the poof fish in the tank LMAO
Juicy pop is back giving us history and backstories on television shows!
Gross
I ❤it.
My childhood favorite. Nell was beautiful & talented but despite having issues she still managed 2 stay on every episode. I miss her dearly. R.I.P Nell Ruth Carter
Still loving her show to this day. In 1984 my mom was in labor with my little brother while watching an episode of Gimme A Break
Two FAMILY MATTERS alumni was on GMaB.
yup. Grandma Winslow and Rachel
I’m 54 and grew up with that show, she was young. Written by a fan of Nell Carter. ❤
Nell Carter had beautiful voice❤
Yes indeed she did
And she was-PRETTY-too.I always liked her character also.
When i was a kid I would sit by my cassette player and record myself singing along with Nell any time she sang on the show. My mom found and listened to the tape of me singing along with Nell and Andy Gibb. I was mortified.
The later theme song with Nell singing goes HARD!! I didn't realize the future Family Matters connections and the pre-Brotherly Love careers of the Lawrence's.
Had a huge crush on Nell Carter back in the day! Such a talent! R.I.P. 🙏🏿
I know THAT’S right, brother!
Yikes i live her but never saw her in a sexual light
@@supme7558 That’s okay; we did.
Awe man!!!! YESSSS!!!!
I remember going to my mother took me to my first play on Broadway and it was Neil cater in ain't misbehaving. That had to be late 70's. Great show!
The timing of the jump😂🔥👏🏾
Lara Jill Miller went on to do voice overs on cartoons such as Clifford's Puppy Days, Curious George, The Loud House, Digimon, Doc McStuffins, The Life & Times of Juniper Lee, Henry Hugglemonster, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Wow Wow Wubbzy and many more cartoons
And Digimon
And she's Lambie from Doc McStuffins!
Those all suck 🤣 poor thing
Neil Carter's voice was amazing. The Gimme A Break theme song, especially season 3 onwards, to me is among the best intros ever created.
I sing the season 3 version all the time.
I don’t care for the original version.
I prefer the original theme song from seasons 1 &2! My nephew and I used to crack up laughing whenever we hear the intro! 😂
The show's theme song brings back some good childhood memories. The show had a very solid original cast (Nell Carter, Dolph Sweet, John Hoyt, Howard Morton, Lauri Hendler, Kari Michaelsen, Laura Jill Miller, Jane Dulo) and their dynamic chemistry came across through the camera onto the TV screen. Kari Michaelsen was some serious eye candy 😍. Alvernette Jimenez (Angie) was a sweetheart. Telma Hopkins was everywhere on TV lol. Joey Lawrence had a nice run on the show as well. I remember the Whitney Houston episode. 😇 RIP Nell Carter, Dolph Sweet, John Hoyt, Jane Dulo, Howard Morton and Rosetta LeNoire 😇
Season 3 theme lives in my head rent free.
Speaking of Rosie O'Donnell, I hope you do a story on the Rosie O'Donnell Show
@@beaniegee5129 Yes, that would be a good one! Rosie is straight, no chaser.
Rosie has been releasing 5 episodes of her show on RUclips for a while now.
You can see the obvious change in her after Columbine and how she started talking about gun laws and getting borderline political.
She did NOT release the Tom Selleck episode which I found disappointing. She released the apology episode only.
Nell hated her untalented ass.
It was a great show. I remember early Sunday nights with this show, Punky Brewster and Silver Spoons.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I never warmed up to Gimme A Break. I feel it played too much into the mammy trope. That said, I did love Nell Carter and had tremendous respect for her talent. She was a great actress, and had such a strikingly beautiful voice!
May she rest in peace. 💐
That’s one of the reasons often cited as one of the reasons the show was canceled, when compared to the Cosby show it seemed so dated.
But even the show joked about it on a few occasions. The episode when Addie is first introduced she’s talking with the girls and says “she’s glad they’re glad black women are finally able to move on from the mammy stereotype” the Nell walks in carrying a basket of laundry and a scarf around her head.
Another Nell is serving breakfast and Samantha asks Nell what’s a cliche? And Nell says “me serving a white child pancakes”
@@garycollins7750 Nell was more then a maid to me and I still can laugh at a lot of the show!
I'm in the minority with you. So glad the big black sassy maid or mother mammy, for the most part, died out by the late 80's.
@@steve9833it did? But that’s all I see
..Juicy Darling, you forgot to mention another Musical guest appearance on the Show... *THE POINTER SISTERS!* ..they played High School friends who dumped Nell from their Girl Group (on the sly) to go to L.A. for a Record contract......
They dumped Nell at the insistence of the record company exec because of her weight.
@@Supremmo ....I know, I didn't want to give away the 'twist', to the Episode.....
@@RBS_ I just thought that was messed up but at the time it was true to life.
@@Supremmo ...I was in the Music Industry......It IS.........
The episode was Nell's way of paying homage to Michael Bennett the creator of the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Bennett created the play for Nell whom had just won a Tony for "Ain"t Misbehavin"! Carter and Sheryl Lee Ralph were originally selected for the roles of Effie and Deana. However, NBC wanted Nell to star in this show. So, she left after realizing how much money she would make on TV. Mr. Bennett then had to look for a new Effie which eventually became Jennifer Holliday. When the play became a Broadway hit, Nell decided to do a similar version in one episode of Gimme A Break featuring the Pointer Sisters.
I had no idea about the behind the scenes drama. I do remember being shocked by how much the show had changed from the beginning. It was basically a different show.
I was born in 1980 so really the only version of this show. I remember are the newer episodes with Joey Lawrence and his brother. I thought they were so cute.
One of my favorite episodes is when Nell was at Addie’s apartment for Christmas. They are competing against each other to get noticed by a guy they like and are shading the hell out of each other. What happens when their argument reaches its apex is very funny! 🎄 😂 The full episode is on RUclips titled “Gimme a Break! S4E13 The Spirit of Christmas”. A must-see!
2:22 i really miss, gimme a break 💔😭.
3:23 love ❤️😘 that sitcom, rest in peace ✌️🕊️ Nell Carter.
This show was so underrated and didn't get the praise it deserved. Not only was it saturated with belly laughs, but appropriately addressed many topics that should be brought up for discussion. Thing is that it got the bum deal when they threw it into the dreaded 9:30pm time slot, a time when many Americans shut off the TV and get ready for bed. So it never really had a fighting chance to show it's colors.
This was an amazing show
What about actor Danny Glover?
I never saw Different Strokes, Facts of Life, or Gimme a Break (I was a little too old, etc.). But I vividly recall seeing commercials or clips which showed the Nell Carter character vacuuming out the aquarium accidentally.
She wasn’t supposed to be a maid but just helping her friends family temporarily
People might have got mixed up not only because of average prejudice but also because she had a funny part in 'Modern Problems' in '81 as a Haitian maid
She looked like a maid to me😢
She was more then “ a housekeeper “ she was trying to get the character to be known as the girls “ surrogate mother “ which in all essence she was . We were blessed to hear her sing on this series . Heaven must sound beautiful with her up there signing ❤❤.
Great video!!!
Always enjoyed Gimme a Break.
Didn't know Nell Carter had so much strife in her life.
May she rest in peace, along with all the other cast members we lost from that beloved show...🎉🎉🎉...☺️😇😌.
Thank you for bringing light to this series. I watched one of the episodes and loved the show.
That second theme song was a hit
RIP Nell Carter
Here's a couple things you forgot to add - Nell Carter also had a best friend on the show named Angie (played by Alvernette Jiminez Kamelle) she was a tall, skinny and dim-witted friend with a little girl's voice. She was eventually written out of the show but appeared in several episodes between Seasons 1 and 4 and regarding Nell Carter, she had 1 child of her own and adopted two boys, after Nell died friends and family were surprised to learn that she had been living as a closeted lesbian and that custody of her children had been left to her partner Ann Kaser
😮😮😮😮😮
Considering that would have cost her job its not living in closet when its force by society
OOF! the things that come out when we pass away. My woman has been instructed to wipe my browser history if anything happens to me.. Some would call me a "conspiracy theorist". 😃 Seriously though she was an awesome woman despite her flaws. Gone but never forgotten!
Wow juicy you read my mind! You be doing those deep dives for rare pearls and we thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤
At 8:52, it’s funny to hear Nell address Rosie as “this one particular lady” 🤣 She had no clue back then how popular “that lady” was going to become.
Pretty messed up that the writers knew Nell had issues with food addiction but still wrote her weight loss into the show.
@@uhsaywhatnow Agreed.
And in the beginning episodes it was very blatant. The 'fat jokes' at Nell's expense were very obvious and heavy handed and cruel.
No its not
@brotherofjunk no it wasnt
One of my favorite show growing up. Nell Carter was a comedic powerhouse. You can tell Nell love those kids. She was very protective of them. Especially Joey Lawrence.
Love this channel 💜
Admittedly, Kari Michaelson does look like Helen Hunt.
O yes definitely. She was the best looking
Helen Hunt did Guest star on the show once
Another fact
Kari Michaelson audition for the role of Kimberly Drummond on different strokes
I loved this show as a kid back in the 80s. Me and my watched it together. There were so many great sitcoms back then.
Significant part of my young childhood ❤😊
Rest well To this legend❤
A quick trip down memory lane I loved Nell Carter on GIMME A BREAK,and the second theme song was my favorite May she continue to sleep peacefully.
"May she continue to sleep peacefully."
No disrespect but I can't imagine for the life of me what could possibly interrupt her?
As a teen, in 1981 and after I saw the show after seeing Miss BBW. And began to like Big Beautiful Women. Who didn't like Nell? I was heartbroken when she passed away.
This show was before my time but I watched reruns and loved her. She was so funny!
One of my favorite shows from back in my child hood days.
Well done. If you're taking request, make a video for Head of The Class!
I really feel bad for rosie o Donnell she didn't deserve to be treated badly by the cast
Aww... Grandma Winslow has been with Jesus for 22yrs. 💔💔💔💔
Great story on Gimme a Break
Ir remember the E Hollywood Story episode said that had the show been renewed for 1987-1988 the concept should have changed again.
This time Addie teaching at the school Samantha was attending, Nell would have been a “dorm mother” like Edna Garrett on Facts of Life.
But NBC chose to end the show as it would have been too similar to Facts of Life which was entering its final season and A Different World which takes place at a college would be starting its first season.
I liked Nell Carter. I miss her
Gimme a Break:NBC Thursday night classic……had some good episodes but when the oldest daughters left for college and when the father passed away, that’s when the show went downhill……smh…All the episodes are on Tubi and some of the main episodes aren’t on tv as of this day…..RIP Nell Carter…..
Outside of Dolph Sweet's death, Gimme a Break suffered from one of TV's most common failures: The "cute" kids are no longer kids and the storylines don't evolve beyond them. I think that's why the Lawrence brothers were brought in to ramp it back up in the last two seasons.
Same I didn't enjoy the last two seasons
RIP. TO A TALENTED WOMAN
Fun fact: Before Gimme a Break! came along, Kari Michaelson auditioned for the part of Jo Polniaczek on The Facts of Life but wasn't chosen. If she got the part, we would probably be seeing Helen Hunt as Katie on Gimme a Break!
Damn the 80s was lit
Speaking of Ally McBeal, I hope you do a story on that show
Yesssss!
Grew up watching her, funny thing my aunt looked so much like her neighbors would stop by and ask her was she Nell Carter. Great memories.
You have a typo in your title. Great video though. Gimme a Break had so much heart. One of my all time favorite shows.
I loved this show!!! the rise of Joey ! Matthew too
Give me a break was one of my favorite shows back in the early 80s.
Before Rosie got on Gimmie A Break, she auditioned to be a veejay on MTV. Gimmie A Break was a staple of my childhood. It use to come on Thursday nights on NBC in the earlier seasons.
Regarding the Gimmie a Break theme songs. There were actually 3 different versions. Season 1 had one, Season 2 was different from season 1 and had a bit more soul and feeling put on the words and then there was season 3 onward. I personally think all 3 are of the greatest TV Themes of all time (possibly THE best ones).
I love gimmie me a break
What kind of friend would ask a « favour » of a friend to be their maid?????
She wasn’t just a maid she was a mother to them.
@@garycollins7750 my question still stands…
The backstory episode in season 2 seemingly explains this away by saying she would be another mother figure for the girls, since they were so young at the time. She trusted Neil completely.
There’s a flashback episode which recounts how it happened. It’s very touching.
The flashback story contradicts from episodes in the first season. The pilot episode and most of the first season of family was dealing with the death of mother. One of the episodes in the first season they were dealing with their mother’s first birthday since she was deceased.
I LOVED Gimme a Break. I miss Nell Carter.
I am amazed this came out before I was conceived. Because I have such fond memories of this show. And when I found it on tv years later I named my pet Samantha and I was so happy to find out that nell was a fellow Virgo woman like myself. But what happened to the tall skinny girl with the high pitched voice that was her friend in the first two seasons? No one ever mentions her.
Wow, she actually died on my birthday. Didn’t know that, I was in highschool that year though.
I loved that show growing up but wow what a sad story
You didn’t use the Rosie O’Donnell story! Rosie told a story recently on stage during a panel where she talked about being in set and Joey Lawrence’s mother walked in and Nell said “get that c@nt off my set!” 😂
She was not a happy woman.
Rosie also acknowledged that the show did a lot for her career and that Nell was just in a bad place in her life.
SO MANY DEATHS! JESUS I LOVED IT AS A CHILD. THEY BOTH WENT TO FAMILY MATTERS THAT WAS GOOD. NEIL WAS AN EXCELLENT SINGER. I WISH SHE MADE A CD.
Fun Fact: Before she was offered the TV show, Nell was originally picked to play the role of Effie White in original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Michael Bennett created the role in 1979 with Nell in mind. In 1980, Nell and Sheryl Lee Ralph performed a few scenes at a workshop in NYC and the audiences loved it. However, NBC came to Nell and offered her, "Gimme A Break". Carter realized that, she would make MORE MONEY on television as opposed to on Broadway. So, Nell left the Broadway production in early 1981. Now Mr. Bennett had to find a "new Effie" for his play. When Jennifer Holliday auditioned for the role, she was selected and the rest was history. In season 2 of Gimme A Break, Nelle paid homage to this with the episode entitled, "The Doo-Wop Girls". The episode was very similar to the Dreamgirls play with her and the Pointer Sisters guest starring as Nell's former group members. Yes, Dreamgirls the play was a vehicle originally meant for Nell Carter because, she won the Tony in 1978 for "Ain't Misbehavin".
One of my favorite shows as a kid. It was hilarious and still is. Nobody watched it when piggy Rosie joined at the very end. No wonder it was canceled.
Memories 💯 ❤️🔥 📺
It is also too bad Neil didn't guest star on Blossom either or that she didn't get to guest star on Clifford's Puppy Days.
Well she guest starred on Joey's other show Brotherly Love.
This was a really good show
Danny glover was a guest star also
This was very depressing 😩
I’m not familiar with this show. Nell is beautiful!
Nell lecturing Rosie???? Gurl... You were high the whole time
We watched the show all the time when I was little and we all like it of course (I had a huge crush on Lara Jill Miller back then). So a few years ago, I was curious about the show and pulled up a couple of episodes. I noticed a REAL tone of anger from Nell. So I looked this up and found out about her issues during the show which I had no idea about. It got hard to watch after a while and I stopped. Felt disappointed.
8:59 is how a narcissist apologizes. They shift the blame and their fault on to you, making their responsibility yours.
Omg I didn’t know there were so many changes to the show 😮
I really loved that show as a teen in the early 80s. 54 is just way too young to die. I hate drugs!
I loved gimme a break. I was so sad when the police cheif died😭😭😭
Love Gimmie a Break
I looooved this show as a kid and when I lived in California I visited Ms. Carter’s grave as she is buried with other famous Jewish celebrities. She converted to Judaism toward the end of her life
Wow I did not know that
Nell was never a maid, though, never. People always get that confused.
I almost ran over Nel Carter in Boston one time. She popped out from between 2 cars on a small one way street, and I had to slam on my brakes to not hit her. My friend and I were like holy s*** that's Nel Carter. Then she crossed the street with a little boy.
As a nerdy 13 yo kid in the early 80's, I had the biggest crush on Lara Jill Miller.
It is too bad Neil couldn't guest star on Loud House due to her death.😊
Birmingham represent.
Yess I heard it was a mess! Let's go 🍿
Didn't like the girls leaving the show, yes they grow and do their own things, but still.
Do Webster
9:08 she is right what are you on about
it's weird that this is my first time hearing about this
i swear, 70's and 90's sitcoms are remembered more than 80's sitcoms. I have no idea why. These 80's shows seem pretty great.
It was just a job, wow. I think the show made too many changes with dropping the girls and moving the show to NY and focusing on the brothers. That made it a completely different show that didn’t work. As a kid I remember the show with the three girls, but I must had lost interest since I don’t remember the show without them and just the boys.
O’Donnell did it work in the show.
They basically had the same house as All in the Family.
Nell Carter was always so pretty and she looked like she smelled SO good!!! I could see her smelling like Chanel No 5, Opium, or Youth Dew ❤
