    Our 2005 doesn’t have an exhaust brake but does have a tow haul mode. I almost always drive with that activated as i like the way the converter locks up sooner. I can feel the engine pulling the truck better.

    I disagree, I think you should use tow haul whenever you're hooked to something over 2 or 3k lbs. Will help with downshifting and change shift patterns. I'm sure in the manual the weight is a little different.

    So on the 5th Gen (2019-2021) what is the weight you think we should turn it on? Have a 30 foot travel trailer that has a max weight of 11,000lbs... I understand the mountain driving is a yes but if I'm flat on I80 do I keep it off with with the trailer? Thanks in advance.

    I've got a question, so last summer I noticed our 15' 5500 was getting pretty hot on hot summer days, up to 230⁰ and it wouldn't really cool down. I tired slowing my cruising speed 5 or 10 mph and it did nothing. And then when I pulled over and was sitting letting it idel for 10 or 15 minutes it only dropped maybe 10 or 15 degrees. And I know it's not just cause it was a hot day cause I was driving our 20' 5500 on an equally hot day and it never passed 200⁰ and you could see when the thermostat would open. On the 15' it was always running hotter than what the thermostat is.
    So I was guessing maybe the rad is plugged up (our trucks drive gravel roads majority of the time) so I took it to the shop for them to clean out and flush the coolant. But I looked at it when I brought the truck home and they did not do a good job of cleaning it.
    I'll see in the summer if it still gets hot which I think it will. So the only things I can think of after that is maybe thermostat, which I want to ask if it's fine getting a 180⁰ thermostat stat for the truck if it still has all emissions on it since I know the DPF needs hot temperatures to clean it out.
    OR it's time to just delete the DPF and DEF. Which leads me to my other question. When doing a DPF and DEF delete does it also remove the EGR junk on the engine or is that something you don't touch?

    • @brandoncaldwell95
      @brandoncaldwell95 3 года назад

      DPF filter cleans with exhaust heat not motor temperature. I do understand the logic of hotter motor meaning hotter exhaust but i do not believe that. Im not in a 5500, but a 17 3500. Just got through pulling 22,000lbs and never crossed 210 in mid 70s temperatures. Hard pulls these truck hit 230s and kick the fans into overdrive in cooling down to 210s. I don't see a problem with swapping Thermostats, but ovsrall might be colder. Nir al driving my truck stays in the 180s/190s.

      I have a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel that ran a little warmer in cooler weather 50°f. The truck has a Bank's iDash. With Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) and Engine Oil Temp (EOT) selected as 2 of the monitored parameters. I checked everything. The coolant tank was on the low side, but okay. I filled the coolant to the high mark. The next day the coolant was at the same point. I refilled the tank again. It took about a gallon and a half to get a stable coolant level. The coolant temperatures were now at the normal ranges.
      The EGR cooler was leaking! Replace your EGR cooler with a quality aftermarket product. Such as Bulletproof.

    I think your advice is reasonable as long as you are using stock sized tires. As soon as you increase to 35" or 37+" tires, use tow-haul when towing anything, especially if you have the 3.73 gears.

    • @Justthemow
      @Justthemow 3 года назад

      These trucks come stock with 35s a 275 70 r18LT is the stock tire on ram 2500 it is 34.5 inches in diameter so there’s that now going up to a 37 nitto grappler you see this number is miss leading I have 37 x12.5 r20s on my truck but after they are mounted and aired up they are actually only 35 inches tall because knobby tires squat more then radials. That being said if you have a 68rfe and your towing an ice chest I would put it in tow haul mode it increases the line pressure from its normal 90- 120 psi to a constant 120psi
