this was my go-to song when i was feeling depressed after dropping out of high school in early 2013, i remember just binging Shameless and this song came at the end of the episode and it stuck to me ever since, i found myself just randomly linstening to it at 2am just doing nothing on computer staying late, this song will always remindme of that, of those pointless nights now im starting the new job tomorrow and im staying up late for no reason, anxious and depressed and listening to this again, 5,6 years later...
That bridge is so. Very. Tight. The tension of the excellent bassline and that building, soaring trumpet solo. And how many bands can make themselves have their (admittedly superb) guitarist step down for a song? The guitar here is basically just counterpoint and rhythm. And it's excellent. This song also wins in that Cake is willing to not load every second with a wall of sound. There is empty space in there. And it is good. Note that the last two minutes is, but for one chorus, almost just pure instrumental of the highest quality.

For 20 years I've been listening to them, and never put together the fact that they have a mix of talent that is very unusual, not least because of the consistency of their excellence. Sure, we all notice the trumpet (and we for damn sure should), and that near-spoken sardonic delivery of the lyrics, but what about the mixtures of (typically) three melodies and counter-melodies, and a consistently very high-end bassline? The drummer does some change-ups that I'm not educated enough to really dissect, but there's no flies on any of them, and you can go back and either geek out musically, or just. Rock. Out. Enough. I come across as a fanboi, and I'm just a guy who likes his music. Hey, you got lucky this time, but you know better than to read the comments. NEVER read the comments! :)

There's not a word about Satan, nor a bit of celebration of Satanism. You also have not provided any examples. But, to be honest, if they did have a little Satanism in their music, it would bother me no more than listening to some Christian influence in my rock and roll.
It's amazing. Most of us came here today because we watched Shameless and felt the energy of that one scene, it was so evolving that we had to find the music and here it is. Beautiful.

Even this one kinda feels like it rides the line sometimes- in short, not enough Cake in their new albums.

Another great song, another great album all together. The band is making their own music out of their own studio now. With their style (an alternative band with a trumpet!) they continue to have originality and creativity.
You want so baddly for them to both escape. You see yourself in the man, and want him to make it out. I cried hard on this one. Amazing video to go with an amazing song.
