It was so much fun when they performed this song at their concert. They had half the crowd sing "I wana fly away" while the other half sang "Im so sick of you, so sick of me, I dont wana be with you." So the crowd got to sing the chorus and it was a blast! :) GO CAKE!
True. SO underappreciated. Who else can meld funk, rock, and even a bit of mariachi, along with snarky lyrics and a driving bassline into something so...well, so darn catchy?
They perfectly capture that droll Valley humor and sensibility that I love so much. I grew up in Bakersfield and have loved this band since they started. They are criminally underrated and overlooked. Their melodies, hooks, and riffs are infectious and memorable. I'm glad they do what they do. It makes my life a happier place.
These guys know how to craft a song! They know how to borrow from so many genres and eras, AND YET, they always manage to do so while also keeping their own unique sound. Let's face it kiddies, the era or truly great rock and pop bands is nearly over - they are an evermore rare and dying breed. Sadly. And CAKE knows how to strike that balance between angst, irony, pure expression, and eye for detail of the human condition - AND seemingly know how to make their musical narrative truly ROCK in the process!
philipatoz Itd never been dying or dead, you just have to look for it. There's so many out there and sometimes it can be a little hard to find, but using this technology we have makes it very possible to do. There's more great bands than years that we will live combined x10.
i know it's a bit late but chances are good you just don't pay attention to the scene anymore, which is fine. everybody has favorite eras! this sort of reductive attitude towards new stuff isn't productive or authentic though, imo
I saw this fabulous band at Sandpoint last summer for the music festival; this song lasted about 10 minutes and it was fugging incredibro. We chanted the "Hey! Hey!" part at the end for about three minutes straight, and then he split the audience into two sections. He diagnosed one half of the crowd as the "angry people: the ones who want to plow into slow drivers on the freeway, the ones who want to punch someone in the face over something stupid they saw on the internet. These are the people who believe that everything bad that happens to them is SOMEBODY ELSE'S FUCKING FAULT" and so on. The other half (my half, heh) he called the "escapists: the people who do all they can to escape the problems in their lives. They are the heavy drinkers, the road trippers, the constant readers, the binge movie watchers. These are the people that get away by doing things like (he paused) SMOKING ILLEGAL DRUGS." AND THENNNNN, while that cool breakdown happens at the end (every-shiny-toy-that-at-first-brings-you-joy), the ANGRY half chanted "I'm so sick of you, so sick of me, I don't want to be with you" while the ESCAPIST half battled back by yelling "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII wanna flyyyyy aaaawayyyyy." The escapist half won, incidentally, but that show was the coolest fucking three hours of my life.
The same thing happened to me a couple months ago. I was so pumped and it was so awesome. John was so freaking hilarious and chill. Glad that you got to go 😅
Cake, since I first heard Rock and Roll Lifestyle when I was 8 or so, has been a big influence on my “personal code”. A lot of wisdom expressed in their songs. Excess Ain’t Rebellion.
Thanks. If you never watched a movie called Predestination with Ethan Hawk Then you should. Stay away from the trailers due to spoilers. Just paying it forward. lol
What I love about cake and their videos too is you just can't take them seriously. Some cool droll humour and a great beat. Our Music is missing more cake or music similar to cake even
The thing I love about these guys is the awesome sound they have, they get by buying the cheapest used gear around and rocking with that. I think that's awesome
At last! I've been trying to find out the name of this musical instrument. I remember hearing it in Ozzy's Crazy Train as well as other tunes. Sounds like a rattlesnake.
Bman 1970 early’60’s (around then I think) it was invented by LatinPercussion to replace an instrument called (and literally from) “the jawbone of an ass”. This was usually made from the jawbone of a much easier to find cow.The dried out and defleshed jawbones teeth would rattle when struck, in the manner you hear the “vibraslap”on this song and Ozzie’s classic song. But even cow jawbones were hard to get also intensive to make and then broke easily. This durable and inexpensive “replacement invention” was a huge success and LatinPercussion’s first big instrument. It propelled one man into what LP is now.
In Oregon choking on smoke and this song popped into my head. I came here to watch the video and I’m like, what the heck, it’s our life right now amid the wildfires, riots and the like....
Is this from 2010? This is the first Pop/Rock tune I enjoy in over 10 yrs. Great guitar tones, arrangement - almost like what AC/DC would write/play IF they were a Pop/Rock band. I also detect a vague Talking Heads vibe,w/ a touch of 'Revolver' era Beatles as well. Very fine. Peace.
Did you know that the "Fly away" Chorus actually has 3 diffrent alternating lines? They are "I want to fly away" "I need a higher way" and "I wanna hide away."
They are sooo cool live. One said of the room has to sing "I wanna fly away" over and over while the other side says "im so sick of you so sick of me i dont want to be with you" its incredile. He is so.....insightful. incredible
I remember when I worked in downtown Sacramento and these guys were just coming up and seeing they're flyers on every telephone pole downtown, they have a really cool and distinct beat and I love the music
Great band. I think we can count the number of 90s bands on one hand that are still around putting out good albums. Going the Distance certainly did put some pressure on them though. One of the greatest songs from the 90s.
To me, there's just always something odd about cake's music videos. They're just so odd and a little weird at times (like in this one) but you're always just invested once you watch them, plus the amazingly made songs to go with it. It just makes you want to keep watching it and you end up loving it.
I feel like this is a song you could feature perfectly in a series. Like when the people drive out of their town or something. for me it's a song i wanna listen to driving in a Cabrio. Just discovered cake and i love them so much
Classic Cake, keeping it real. It's almost as though he's like, alright, let's get this out of the way, here's the gaddamn vibraslap. Surprised at the fadeout frankly! Otherwise though, great tune, excited for the record.
Anyone growing up in that neighborhood recognizes that abandoned building :) There's also some shots of the shops on 24th & Florin, near Rice Bowl and old Alpine Alley...
I saw STP right after Scott came out of rehab, that was amazing, but nothing compared to watching this band play upfront. AMAZING. They all are so talented.

Is it not icredible that this song says everthing, in nothing, at all. There musical lyrics transcends truth in many fashions, for this garden of a junkyard variety mind. They deserve to be bigger than life; my only wonder is, would they have wanted it that way or not? Do to the honesty of there message, left aside from the fantatic musical combination of instruments in company, this group utterly kickassed. I saw them for first time on the K street mall and said to myself they were honestly playing together for the love of thier music, thank you Cake for rhe memories. Grew in in North Highlands of of Madison Ave, very nice back drop the Ford house next to the defunct A&W!!!
such a good song. Definitely a top 10 song of the past decade! When this came out, I listened to this non-stop...One of the only truly GOOD bands I've discovered from listening to the radio...

I think adding a horn a rattler in a rock " somewhat" is brave, but I love his writing and the music makes a total well song. Good job CAKE
True. SO underappreciated. Who else can meld funk, rock, and even a bit of mariachi, along with snarky lyrics and a driving bassline into something so...well, so darn catchy?
cake is a great band. the more you hear their material, the more hooked you get.

They are criminally underrated and overlooked. Their melodies, hooks, and riffs are infectious and memorable. I'm glad they do what they do. It makes my life a happier place.
I'm also a huge fan of another 'valley'/desert band, Queens of the Stone Age, who have the same wacky, droll sense of humor in their music.
The instruments, the voice(s), everything about these guys is pure awesomeness!

I agree about their songcraft.
