a truly amazing band...and Morrissey told people "be yourself and dont give a fuck if people mock you" and that liberated a whole generation...very few bands have such an impact on society...
Morrissey and Marr, like Lennon and McCartney, is not a great combination you often find... but thank god for The Smiths. Marr, best guitarist of his generation. And Morrissey, the same lyrically. Together ..The Smiths !
Now that I've read Johnny Marr's autobiography (great book by the way) I have a more vivid picture on how The Smiths came to be. It makes me love them even more! Forever a Smiths fan
Saw The Smiths supporting The Gang Of Four in London late 1983. They were great. After they had finished, I said to my friend "I reckon they might go far !" After I purchased this single (with the original sleeve of Terence Stamp), I knew I was right.....
You're correct. Haven't played the single for many decades, and it obviously shows.... Still have a white label demo of their debut album, with the tour dates for 1984.
Haven't given the album's value any thought, it is simply brilliant music. "Hand In Glove" is based on The Stooges' "Gimme Danger", another all time favourite track of mine and Johnny's. I played Morrissey's "Vauxhall And I" very recently, I think it is his best solo album after the group split up. Even so,The Smiths remain peerless three decades later.
Morrissey may be a lyrical genius, but Marr fosho had AMAZING guitar riffs. They're so catchy & rly embody the 80's pop of this band. Rourke's bass lines were just under appreciated. Joyce's drums were spot on. Damn, I wish they were still a band.
I love the flowers in the back pocket and the so-bad-it's-good dancing. we need more performers like moz today. (tori amos does that for me...she really puts on a creative, inspired show, strange body movements and all :-)

To add to his many talents, Morrissey: the best dancer ever? I think so. Fuck, I started watching Smiths vids at 5 and it's now like 10 to 1. So addictive.
man i wish i got to witness these dudes rock out live just got done working two festivals. And they were good. But man imagine paying for a festival and getting the pleasure to see these dudes. so sad they broke up. so sad about it all. I’ve worked at fests w Morissey but I wanna see the Smiths. I know never happening. Anyway insane performance I wish I was born sooner.
I know people who say that all modern music owes this and that to bands like The Smiths, The Fall, Joy Division, Wire, etc..... But to be honest.... let's be fair. Really only bands such as: Radiohead, Muse, Interpol, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, The Killers, 21 Pilots....etc... let's be fair, those are the types of bands that owe so much to their predecessors. But all of music??? Noo.... that's not right
Mikes an excellent drummer, def was a big part in the smiths sound. Not sure what youre even saying but, it sounds like youre raggin on Mike. People who base musicians on how technical they are, are straight up autists.
He was a junkie, which led to a short career. He played in Theatre of Hate before joining the Death Cult. In terms of recordings with the Cult, he only played on God's Zoo (Death Cult single), Dreamtime (debut Cult album), and She Sells Sanctuary. Dreamtime live is on youtube, and it showcases his talents nicely. I was stoked that you included Clem Burke. Love him.
when they played this charming man on totp morrissey held a bunch of gladioli instead of a mic and whirled it round while the rest of the band were miming
I think he was the greatest drummer of the Eighties anyway, with Clem Burke and Stephen Morris being second. Live intro's of These Thigns Take Time, The Queen Is Dead, Panic... just great, great sound.
Well johnny said that he assumed that this song was about his and Morrissey’s relationship at the time and morrissey said the song holds great romance in it and he cant make eye contact or even look in johnnys direction sooo 😳😳😳😳
a truly amazing band...and Morrissey told people "be yourself and dont give a fuck if people mock you" and that liberated a whole generation...very few bands have such an impact on society...
Rourke's bass tone is ridiculously good.
Best bassist ever
Agreed! Or at least one of the most underrated bassists
only reason I like the Smiths
whoa there
TBNYC bold
Les claypool would beg to differ
Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and Joyce made great music together for a short period of time. The Smiths will live on forever.
RIP Andy Rourke. legends.
Wonder if the people in the audience knew they were taking part in a historic moment lol. Legendary.
Morrissey and Marr, like Lennon and McCartney, is not a great combination you often find... but thank god for The Smiths. Marr, best guitarist of his generation. And Morrissey, the same lyrically. Together ..The Smiths !

this is the best sounding live band ever, I think I might even like this version of the song better than whats on the record

One of my favorite bass lines ever, best believe!!

I love Morrissey's voice!
So glorious, one of my favorites at the moment
RIP Andy Rourke 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
"Brrrrrr-OH!" - Morrissey
I love this voice💓
Rourke on bass is like a venomous snake: you don't see it, but you know when it hits you.
I think I'll bring back the 2 ft long flower thing as an accessory.
what an awesome riff
So miss this band....Amazing new sound at the time, A classic,,,,
Let's not forget how incredible of a bassist Andy Rourke was/is! He was a giant part of The Smiths sounding so good and unique!
I love the flowers in the back pocket and the so-bad-it's-good dancing. we need more performers like moz today. (tori amos does that for me...she really puts on a creative, inspired show, strange body movements and all :-)

Waiting for that part
Hand In Glove
The Smiths
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No it's not like any other love
This one's different
Because it's us!
Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me
And if the people stare
Then, the people stare
Oh I really don't know
And I really don't care
Hand in glove
The good people laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by "rags"
But we have something they'll never have
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by "rags"
But we have something they'll never have
And if the people stare
Then, the people stare
Oh I really don't know
And I really don't care
So hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath
For the good life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer
But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again

This song is genius. I recommend checking out the Rockpalast version- their best imo
Hi - yes I agree with you there - the Rockpalast concert was fantastic :) - the Tube performance here was brilliant too though !
GrungeGirl83 Nope, Glasgow ;)
Imo the live versions of this song is much better than the studio version
I'm in love with Andy Rourke.....Humble, Sweet & ONE of the GREATEST bass players of all time.... Andy Rourke!!!!!!!!
wish they had a reunion of some sort
I love the Smiffs :-)
Thanks for re-posting this great footage!
How many flowers died in the furtherance of Morrissey's career.
Andy was the sweetest person I’ve met.
Needs more views. Play it til the last breath!
I remember this vividly …. Was 20 at the time
Better than studio version insane all of them legends
The only band in the 80s that really mattered
I know people who say that all modern music owes this and that to bands like The Smiths, The Fall, Joy Division, Wire, etc..... But to be honest.... let's be fair. KomaKino X z to say that all modern music owes to those bands would be an offense to the bands tbh a lot of modern music is crap
i uesed to go asleep to this song in 89-90, and others, and must say they were addictive for about 6 months or so
Five people have never heard music
Sin sin sinner That's what I say about the drummer... Go figure!
you mean Mike Joyce ?
John R.
You would probably say the same about Ringo
Mikes an excellent drummer, def was a big part in the smiths sound. Not sure what youre even saying but, it sounds like youre raggin on Mike. People who base musicians on how technical they are, are straight up autists.
I have autism, so no.
If ' There is a light' was never written then this would be my favourite smiths track!...They'll Never be another smiths x
I'm heterosexual... but in love with morrissey

Great song!

thanks for reuploading this theoriginalmilo
In their pomp they were the best band on the planet. Yes the best.
It bothers me so much that these people ain't dancing
Bitch Plz I think they’re mesmerised
For a brief moment it looked like some of them were moshing!😂
Brilliant
i wonder if that audience knew they were playing live... it sounds so perfect it could be a studio recording.
The flowers coming out of the arse of Moz is a clue they're not playing live.🌸

Ah, I still have to give The Cult a good listen.

Better than the single and album mixes in my opinion!! Guitar really cuts through this mix
Morrissey literally sounds the same in his live performances
the perfect teen angst soundtrack... in 1986 there was definitely no better music to party to and fall in love with a nice girl
flowers:)
morrissey would always have flowers in his pocket and fling them around and stuff
back in his Smiths days
@Reint25 yeah same here it really gives the song a more emotional edge
how come he didnt do that mumbling thing in the chorus like he does on the recorded version? thats my favorite part of the song...
Great list of drummers. I personally would add Nigel Preston (rip) to that mix of great 80's drummers.
Dat bass
супер!
THE SMITHS at their best!.

They sound good. I want to learn the guitar part.
very similar to my situation
2019 anyone?
@bassplayer1617 Yeah, he never did/does playing live. Too bad, because for me it's the most moving part of the song,
ohh the good life is out there somewhere just stay on my arm you little charmer

It beats the studio version. It’s great to be able to hear everything clearly.
for the sake of this video, i am currently 21 years 7 months and 5 days old.
some nice bird trilling at the end..
I wish i could dance like Morrissy.....
Go, Rourke, go!
@frankshankley Whoever wrote the basslines was great at it, too many rock bassists now forget there are more than root notes and dont groove.
Mozza goin off
Yep, it's a slow dance alone stoned, but, there's always hope.
