Understory definitely a botanical term for a strata in a forest marked by reduced amount of light. You guys have all photographed fungi so unknowingly are experienced understory photographers. Loving your work guys.
I have to agree with Gary, dropping an ad into a video at the 1 minute mark comes across as money-grabbing. Re: workshops, to add to what Sam said, it also makes a huge difference if the person leading the workshop is personable, inspiring, and projects great positive energy etc. Looking forward to more awesome pubcast adventures. Re: the sick phat bloke... meow, meow, meow-meow. 😸
An excellent episode gents! My weekly fix of photography amusement is fulfilled 🤣 I completely agree with Sam on his comments reference workshops and 121s. Back in the day, I dipped my toe in by organising trips out with my local camera club - nothing serious but it gave me the opportunity to test out planning and also instructional approaches without the pressure of a paying client. That then turned into a "would you do a 121 with me" request and I've never looked back and now do group and 121 workshops. Additionally I've encountered participants that just want the locations, as well as those that want to learn, and those that are just there for the social group experience! Gary's comments about our well known landscape photographer(s) and the workshop approach echo those that I've heard as well. In fact one of my buddies did an evening session in London and was told "oh, you seem to know what you are doing I'll leave you to it", and that was the only time the tutor spoke to him. A poor return for the £400 to £500 the event cost! I think the lowest I'd go back to was my original Canon 5D - now referred to as the "Classic" - which I used in Formula One and the landscape with ease. I had to sell it unfortunately to fund other things, but I wish that I'd been able to keep it. With the resurgence in interest in vintage camera kit recently, prices for this camera have jumped so I'll perhaps just need to bide my time... Big congrats to Dave on his 12,000 subscribers milestone, which brings me to a QUESTION - has the podcast group seen their subscriber numbers jump when they publish new content, but then gradually fall away over the next week or so and does anyone know why? I'm struggling to make the 2,000 mark on my channel even though I've been publishing regularly for the last two years...
Another good night , YES Holme Fen I have mentioned at least four times and now you have been !! I now think we are not invited to join you and learn any tips and tricks, Keep vlogging might see you one year.😂
Enjoyed the pubcast tonight. 😅 Re ads, I’d pay £10 a month for ad free, but £17 feels too steep and more then the streaming companies that make content, especially as I would probably need to include the whole family at £26. RUclips seems to be continually ramping up the advertising. It use to be a 5 or 10 second ad at the beginning, then it was sometimes 30 seconds, then it was two ads, then ads in the middle. Recently it’s gotten so bad I find I’m not finishing watching videos if it becomes too much.
Really enjoyed this week's episode guys some really funny moments. 19:27 for example classic moment. Going to check out Kin and The good place on your recommendations. As for gear I have always been a Nikon shooter until recently but I could easily live with the Nikon D700 it was a superb camera really loved it. Keep it going guys always a good watch and a giggle along the way.
What a great episode the cats thinking in meows was a brilliant thought, and it makes me wonder what trees think of use as woodland photographers. Do they for example say ... Here he is again, and he has his tripod again I don't know why he bothers... Frank...Frank...move your branch just before he clicks the shutter and when he walks but try and trip him up.. Would love to be a tree. :-) (There is probably better names for a tree than frank) Keep up the good work.
😂 it wasn’t meant that way but I think you know that 😂. I reckon we’d have a great laugh and we will be up for it. I’m sure someone from the team will be discussing it with you.
Thanks chaps, there is absolute rubbish comedy on TV these days in my humble opinion, but i have to admit in your "Random Madness" section you had me and even my family in stitches, thanks much appreciated!
Pretty fair chat about the adds boys, I must say they are annoying but like mr G said you have a choice. Very happy to see Dave doing so well especially being Add free. I have always had adds which I don’t want to do, and only do for the traction theory. Obviously not for the money lol 😂
Another great episode, must admit I do enjoy these slightly less 'scripted' episodes. Look forward to the big Pubcast/7.1 podcast. Steve has already offered to do the edit 😂
Fact Check - Sorry Dave but "understory" is a word, and Jamie. it is being used in the correct context by Simon. (meow!) Gary - Your question about "the language you think in" reminds me of conversations I had back around 1980 when I was working with a fellow Englishman who was in the process of moving to Switzerland to live and work. We were dealing with lots of technical documents that were written in Swiss German. He said that as he was transitioning to German being his main language he found himself thinking more in German and less translating to English to think about the new technical things he was dealing with, but still felt that he thought in English for stuff he was familiar with. Clearly this only really refers to thoughts when they become conscious, as the underlying brain mechanisms are common whatever the external language. I also think that elements of my own thinking is pictorial as well as language. (purr!) Loved the new feature at 34:00. 🤣🤣
Definitely up for a meet-up. I have ads run but didn’t realise that I can put ads where I choose or how many, I just click the buttons and let them run. I need to look in to that. Keep up the good work 👍
Awesome episode chaps. I'm glad I expended 90 minutes of my time watching it. I stopped watching a popular photography you-tuber because they were putting in 5 or 6 ads into a 25 minute video. Sorry, but that is showing disrespect to the audience. Liking the look of the new website Gary. All the best, Phil
Another awesome average episode guys 😂 Have you ever concidered how difficult it is for us to try and explain to our other half while laughing why a man is talking in meows. These are serious photographers, then Dave starts Mooing..........she walked away bemused 😂 Keep up the entertainment
A laugh out loud episode this week. You were in especially good form Gary…..not boring at all. I have a topic you may want to discuss. It seems a lot of the current in vogue landscape photographers are jetting off all over the world with various workshops etc. How far would you all go for the ultimate long haul photo trip and would you feel at all guilty about travelling such a long way just for a photo? And if you could take only one lens for that trip what would that be. Cheers Pete.
Thoroughly enjoyed this week’s episode, got few strange looks from my wife at the amusing parts which made me laugh. It’s a Pub cast, when you go to the pub with your mates very rarely do you have serious conversations, it’s normally a load of nonsense about random subjects, but cannot remember every having one about do cats think. Anyway another enjoyable Sunday night, watching the vlog after having got back from the cinema after watching a very funny but true story, film called Wicked Little Letters, loads of swearing but very a good laugh.
Pure entertainment guys, but I am here to tell you that understorey is definitely a word and a useful word. It perhaps makes more sense here in my part of the world (SE Australia) where woods and forests typically have more than limited floor cover in the sense of there being a lot more than leaves and low vegetation. Rather the forests and woods are layered and the understorey can be composed of small trees, tall shrubs and large ferns and cycads. A forest floor just doesn't describe it because the understorey is not the floor. Anyway, just started tuning into the Pubcast and loving the banter mixed with some more serious discussion.
Just finished watching in two parts, after falling asleep last night ……. Guys, I have to say. What an absolutely awesome episode, it was absolutely sick and led us all on such an adventure, it had me absolutely purring in delight. Meeow, meeow. Gary, your timing was purrfect at times, I mean, Daz mentions ‘fat’ and without the slightest delay you replied “yeah I’ve heard that plenty of times”. By then I was pretty much in tears. Whether that was from laughter or the headache, not sure. And as for “Ooh, sir, is that deep enough for you?!”. I have a question for you. What lens could you not be without? I actually don’t know the exact answer to that yet. As a Canon RF user, I’d love the RF24-240, if only I could afford to buy it, as it would allow me to go on longer hikes with far less in the bag. I actually wish I knew which photographers you were talking about behind your hands, as I’m dreading spending money on a ‘workshop’ now, and finding I’ve dwindled diminishing resources on a complete waste of time. That’s a real thing for me now, as I’m due to take early retirement from paramedicing on March 14th, just in time for my visit to the show at the NEC! Christ my comment is getting random, bloody dog interfering with my mind again
Dave's philosophy is correct. We do live in a commercial world, and one needs reward for effort. I don't pay towards patron, so I am quite happy for the maker to get some income from the advert. What I have noticed the add break is getting better and better to be in a break in the video that works not not so abrupt and less annoying. So if that's RUclips doing that, god on them.
I am a paid RUclips subscriber. Once you go with the paid version you can't go back. I tried but the ads drove me crazy and there's no greater breadth and depth of subject matter anywhere. I use RUclips as my source of entertainment and an incredible source of self education. It's such a gift with all its faults. I don't subscribe to anything else paid, except Lightroom & Photoshop, so it's a treat to myself and a personal development tool.
Hi guys I thought I’d get the first comment in, I really enjoy your videos, the chats are always interesting, down to earth and funny, photography and non photography related. I did comment a couple of weeks back but I think maybe it slipped through the cracks. Save you looking for it, I asked if you consider photography a talent or just a skill. My other question was do you think it’s important to continue your hobby/passion even if it feels like no one is paying attention, i.e not getting much love for your work on social media. If you have covered these topics before then not to worry, but if you’re ever looking for ideas for topics then I’d be really interested in your insights. Keep up the great work 👍
Nice one Chaps, well up for a meet up / Pubcast, and totally agree with Daz with not paying for extra content, as that's what RUclips is supposed to be all about ! don't mind one or two but after that I get 🤬👍🏻
Another wonderful hour & a half. Thanks everyone. I have no problem with RUclips ads. As Dave says, if you don’t want them then pay up…. or don’t watch RUclips. Unlike income tax or death, watching RUclips is a choice. What I do have a problem with however is the awful music on some of the ads, particularly Tesco & Jet2. Question for Pubcast discussion: Which non-photographic RUclips video’s do you watch? What other interests do you have? One who I watch on recommendation from Darren is Abbie Barnes ‘Spend more time in the wild’. I’m sure Darren can explain her channel better than me.
Susie Dent will tell you that Understorey is a word and is in the OED. “The layer of vegetation growing beneath the level of tallest trees in a forest”
It was entertaining to watch as always. A good mixture of sensible and daft. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone invented a better way of carting about all your equipment, other than on your back. Like golfers have a golf buggy.
That's interesting about the Peak District, because being from the States (and having not visited the UK) I've always wondered why photos from the Peak District always have noticeably fewer peaks than photos from the Lake District. 🙂 Now I know. [ LATER EDIT ] I suddenly feel inadequate with my little Canon T8i / 850D, although I do have a 70-200 F/4L...
Love Dave’s haircut. How did you resist using… “the whistle goes and it’s cocks out” as a show title? 😂 Did you seriously refer to Ginsters as a pasty? You’d get lynched down here in Cornwall 😂 Sam made a great point of good photographers not necessarily making good teachers. This reminded me of a talk I saw recently from a well known RUclipsr. Whilst his work was incredible, he lacked any enthusiasm and the talk was uninspiring. Daz may have mentioned him… Still shooting 5D MKIII here, 150,000+ on the shutter. Still love the images that I get from on it.
How many times have I said that same sentence " the Grand Canyon is awesome--your dinner is not " .The overuse and thereby diminishment of the word is annoying as hell. I never use that word anymore .Ditto and even worse 'amazing'. I have been to the Grand Canyon many times in my life and it never looses it's drama. However understory is a legitimate botanical term to describe trees that prefer to grow in the shadow of larger trees-Japanese Maples for example are considered understory trees. So are some of the Cornus cultivars . The cat thing--brought me to laugh tears.
Understory in a forest or woodland is a definite botanical term. Dave. It came into my vocabulary over fifty five years ago in high school Botany and later at Ag. college. So that particular photographer has an experienced natural, botanical understanding of the forest. The understory has its own micro environment, important and part of the larger forest or woodland ecosystem to survive. Google the word.. The vlogger in question, a couple of names come to mind, I will have to pay more attention, will know the true meaning of the word understory anyway, .... Back to the Pubcast for more interesting shite 😊
Great fun as always, one of the few times that I realize an hour plus has gone by and I don't feel that it was wasted! My question would be...at what point in your photographic journey did you feel that you needed a website, and was it to legitimize yourself as a photographer to be taken seriously, for business,or because you felt that you should just have one?
Great stuff! But I think some changes should be made. First Dave needs to do the introduction, and then Jamie, Sam, and Stuart need to have their own segments they seem unable to get a word in between Gary and Darren's banter. And for a topic how about this if you could design a camera what features would it have?
Gary's cat topic was the best bit, I have often wondered something similar. So, do French people think in French or do they translate it into English have a thought then convert it to Francais? Just asking. Great episode thanks.
Hi chaps, Invitation for a joint podcast / meet up graciously accepted, we'll be in touch. Another great one lads, plenty of laughs. Regards mid-roll ads, I'm in Dave's camp with that one. I watch more on you tube than anything else and having ads pop up every so often really get's my goat so I don't mind a few quid every month so I don't have to sit through an hour or so each week watching them. Also, If I was to down grade it would be to a Canon 7D mk1 I found them great but up graded to the full frame 5Dmk4 which I still shoot with as I feel I have nothing to gain moving up to a more up-to-date system other than a lighter pocket. Admittedly thoughts of an R5 has recently started to manifest in my mind.
Thanks for the podcast guys This saves me having to watch death in paradise with the wife. Many thanks for that What do you think about photography RUclipsrs that do promotional videos for non photographical items like electric bikes?
Understory, really? Several meters below the bottom of the canopy is the understory, a layer made up of young trees, short species of trees, shrubs, and soft-stemmed plants. 😂 I'm surprised you haven't heard of this zone in the forest.
With a 30 min video I think of it like this. In a 10 min video most creators put mid roll ads in now so wouldn't be surprising for a creator with a 30 min video to stick adverts at 10mins and 20mins. Promotion of the book was a big clue, guys really pushing the hard sell on that. I have a feeling said creator has other incomes coming in outside of youtube land given his history with music production and also his wife too but when you look at the amount of travelling involved in what he does all over north America I don't expect that for free so if I have to sit through a few ads I don't really care. It's cheaper than paying for the subscription and I pay for his trip just by watching it as we all do. If the pubbcast had a mid roll it wouldnt bother me either given the length of it and time taken to create it.
Talking of naming the Peak District "The Peaks" then as a local Cumbrian, it's the same as those idiots who say Lake Windermere instead of the correct name Windermere ☺
There is 2 types of people when your teaching . A Ones who have a short attention span unwillingness to learn B Ones who are willing to listen n learn and have the ability to improvise adapt overcome C Be able to think like a chess player .. the ability to think several moves ahead .. D Be observant What in essence makes a bad photographer ??? Like to here you're thesis on that. Lack of knowledge , attitude , poor skills ???
I've decided that 61 is the new middle aged. 🤣🙄 The worst mid-roll ad I've seen cut the narration of the video mid sentence. I'd suspect cats think visually. I'd guess that every forester I've ever worked with has used the term understory, do you suppose he picked it up from someone in the states?
On the Subject of workshops / trips . I saw an Ad on Fb for Mull . They were charging in the region of 1,300 .. I laughed at the sheer gaul at the price . When it would me cost a fraction going myself on holiday to Mull . And there is Ytube Togs that advertise on there own channel . Yet when one doesn't even feature the subject matter on his channel that he is advertising ... Idea for you're next Pubcast ..,,,,, Prices of Camera BAGS .... Is a Camera bag really worth 400 quid ?
After 3 weeks of having a stroke, it was pleasure to watching you tonight back to the normal level of fun professional level. Love it 😅😅
Thanks
Thanks - much appreciated Kevin
Understory definitely a botanical term for a strata in a forest marked by reduced amount of light. You guys have all photographed fungi so unknowingly are experienced understory photographers. Loving your work guys.
I have to agree with Gary, dropping an ad into a video at the 1 minute mark comes across as money-grabbing. An excellent episode gents! My weekly fix of photography amusement is fulfilled 🤣
I completely agree with Sam on his comments reference workshops and 121s.

Another great Pubcast everyone.
I enjoyed every minute as usual.
Look forward to seeing the next one.
Another outstanding instalment. Thank you gents for cheering me up whilst I lounge on the sofa with terminal man-flu.

Ah, Gary Gough. Mr "Rule of Thirds and a 10 stop ND filter!!!!"

Going on a workshop with Mali Davies mainly to meet him ..down at the Lake District
Is this episode 12 or 13 I am confused?
Some old philosophyer stated to have a thought you need language before language there was no thought just instinct
I would of thought playing table tenis in the buff would be dangerous as you could hit the the wrong ball.
Hi guys what I would like to know are your dreams in black & white or are they in colour?
sold my 7d mk2 and 5d mk4 to get the canon r6 mk2.
Thanks for the podcast guys This saves me having to watch death in paradise with the wife. Many thanks for that
What do you think about photography RUclipsrs that do promotional videos for non photographical items like electric bikes?
Understory, really? Several meters below the bottom of the canopy is the understory, a layer made up of young trees, short species of trees, shrubs, and soft-stemmed plants. 😂 I'm surprised you haven't heard of this zone in the forest.
Personally I don't use "shot or shoot"
Miaow miaow miaow!! Miaow miaow miaow miaow miaow? Do you agree?🤭🤭🤭
This episode was Cat
There is 2 types of people when your teaching .
A Ones who have a short attention span unwillingness to learn
B Ones who are willing to listen n learn and have the ability to improvise adapt overcome
C Be able to think like a chess player .. the ability to think several moves ahead ..
D Be observant
What in essence makes a bad photographer ??? Like to here you're thesis on that.
Lack of knowledge , attitude , poor skills ???
I've decided that 61 is the new middle aged. 🤣🙄
The worst mid-roll ad I've seen cut the narration of the video mid sentence.
