This camera paired up with the Lumix 25mm 1.7 prime is perfect. With the right settings you can even shoot street photography at night. Great video for a great little camera.
Hey Grant, I totally agree. The G85 with the 12-60mm kit lens is my newest and best setup. I find the photos technically way better than my Canon APS-C DSLRs. The sharpness, colors, metering, dynamic range, are all pristine. But for some reason the photos don't have as much personality or pizzazz. I think some of the flaws of the older kit can actually add something that a technically perfect camera doesn't replicate. But I still love the G85 and am glad I picked one up in 2023 for an amazing price brand new. I watched one of your reviews to finalise my decision to get it, and I always know it will take great photos with minimal effort. Any editing recommendations for adding some fun, flavor and personality to photos of family outings and backyard antics?
I have two of these and use them all the time. I love them for many of the reasons you gave, but also because I can shoot video as long as my battery and card can hold out, without worrying about the camera timing itself out at 29 minutes.
G9 is my current primary camera and LOOOOVE it. However I had the G85 before I purchased my G9. Used the G85 mainly for video and it worked like a champ filming 120 video for the US Coast guard. It didn't miss a beat while filming in challenging conditions on carriers, gas rigs, chemical ships, in hulls of ships etc. Now I have passed it on to my daughter as she starts her photography journey in HS.
Great to see this vid and can't agree more. I've loved the G85 since it was launched but I've not kept up with how it has "aged". Great to hear they are keeping a good thing going and nice to hear comments on lenses. I'm running a bunch of Cannon glass using an adapter with decent results, but it is time to get some dedicated optics. Thanks for posting.
Had been investigating cameras, light that can do video, too. Looked at the G7 and will be going with this one, the G85 from your recommendation. One of my hats in the past was a semi pro photographer, particulary in the pre digital age. Now I'm not wanting to haul around all the weight of my old camera systems and have been wanting to take a camera on the road for more control with my photos and video, too. Thank you!
True! I still grab my G85 a surprisingly high percentage of time. I like being able to switch between photo and video instantly for one thing. The dials, switches and buttons strike the right balance for me - and I just know the camera, which is a major asset.
I have a newer camera, but I will still pick this up a lot. Makes me want a second one in case mine ever dies. Still going strong at 118k shutter clicks.
My time to buy a new Lumix has arrived--thanks for making this recent G85 review :-) Am struggling with a decision--between G85, FZ2500 and FZ10002 for general, macro and some astro. A huge advantage on weight to the G85--however the long-throw Leica on the FZ2500 (16 elements, 11 groups w aspherics, etc) is awesome (coming from bygone days of 35-105 on an OM1).
I love my G85, and have the 12-60, 45-175, and 100-400 lenses. I also have an adapter that allows me to use my Leica prime lenses from my film Leicas. I do more still than videos, but love having the high quality video options at my fingertips! The only complaint would be that the viewfinder being in the center puts my nose on the touch screen which moves the focus point sometimes. This has cost me a few good shots, but if I don't need the screen for other reasons, i can flip it around. I do that a lot for wildlife shots.
I've had this camera for a few years. My biggest gripe is the autofocus. Sony cameras lock the autofocus perfectly on you and never seem to go fuzzy. The G85 loses autofocus when shooting moving video.
I have a G85 and love it. The pictures are wonderful, 4k is stellar, and my streaming camera. I paired it with 35 and 28-mm lens from Meike for stills. Use the kit lens for streaming and video. Wish we could record to an external drive. :)
I am wondering how the image quality of the g85 compares to the g95? Is the tonal dynamic range better on the g95? Panasonic g85 has a great price at the moment, but I'm worried about the old sensor 16mpx
Hey Grant, great video and thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Like yourself, I really enjoy my Panasonic G85 - most of the time. The majority of our videos are shot in 1920 X 1080 at 60fps and this is a good combo for us, - when I have my settings done correctly. Most of our videos are shot outside on-the-fly "Running and gunning" and I'm still trying to figure out what to leave on "auto" and what to leave on "manual." The G85 is for me, a large step upward yet also a very steep learning curve. Could you please mention where you like to have your video settings on the G85 when your running and gunning? There are several excellent videos on static settings for the G85, for bloggers and other stationary video, but I can't find anything on run and gun settings concerning Mode, ISO, AF, Light Meter settings, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as there is so much misinformation that so many of us have wasted our time on. Thanks for your hard work and cheers from across the pond!
I have the European version of the Lumix G85, the G80. It's absolutely the same and I love it. Very worth it for me, very well done, I can only recommend it.📷By the way, I'm glad I'm not the only one out using this in 2024 😂The video turned out very good, thank you!
How's it going Grant? I just picked up a brand new G85 and am looking forward to a whole lot of adventure with it. Just wanna say a big thank you to you, as you are one of two RUclipsrs that convinced me to get it.... 😎👊!!!
Great review! What macro prime lenses would you recommend for this? Looking for something that can work for food photography and portraits (50mm, 85mm equivalents)
Nice! Thanks for the video. I love my g80/85. It also have all the connections for mic, headphone, remote, hdmi, etc. That's why a lot of people choose it for RUclips or similar. It makes a perfect combo with my GX80/85 for travel. Cheers!
Hi Grant. As a graphic designer do you ever video doccument your design process using traditional media? I am considering purchasing a Panasonic G85 with a kit lens that comes with it from Amazon and I have a good lighting set-up and camera mount, but my existing old camera is not picking up coloured pencils very well, particularly Col-erase pencils unless I dig in to the A4- A3 paper
Yeah I have done a bit in the past and could do more, just my focus is on the camera stuff right now… Yeah the g85 has some nice colour profiles that give a nice true colour… Like the “natural” profile :)
Hi! Thanks for your helpful review. I'm a beginning photographer and am hoping to purchase this camera for Christmas. What neck / wrist straps do you recommend? Thanks again!
Hey grant I have a car RUclips channel I do car reviews I use the lumix G7 now i obviously don’t know much about cameras but I just want 4K video that looks clear and nice should I get the G85 or just keep the G7?
I picked up a defective G85 for free that I intend to repair. I already have better Lumix cameras, but I like to fix things. If I was buying at this price range, I think I would get the G95 instead though.
Hi Grant, Im using GH4 as my A cam for B-Roll, I have it rigged up as a cinema cam. Im looking for a Panasonic for a dedicated photography stills cam (I do some wildlife and nature stills). Doesnt have to be the latest and greatest lumix, would be nice if it was smaller than the gh4 in size. What would you recommend?
Panasonic lumix G85 and DMC-G85 what is the difference? I have searched Google, asked so called camera sales professionals, asked a professional photographer I know abd still not an answer that makes any sense as to if they are the same or what the difference is between them.

Many of my favorite photos are shot on this exact combo.
so true. i have the exact setup & i love it. 🔥
... and Olympus 45 mm f 1.8. Your G85 can do some great portraiture with that combo.
What are those perfect settings?
Thanks! Really liked the photos that were paired with the color palettes to the right of the photo. Cool effect.
Thanks man... I do that to get colour ideas for my design projects :)
this camera survived sand in Sahara, snow in the Himalayas, the jungle, the rain and has been used for multiple professionnal documentaries

Still using G85 since 2017. I would upgrade to G9ii of course but don't see too much reason considering its cost
Little Panny Boy will always have our hearts. Amazing little camera, excellent stabilization and easy to use.

do you use capture card, or some special software from panasonic?
Is USB streaming available in G85?
I don’t think so … But not 100% sure
this is the reason why I like this channel...

I want another one. I use that same camera and make movies on here and they do pretty well.
Nice video. I have a G95 I got new, a GX85 I got new, and another GX85 I got that needed repairs. Now I love all 3. GX85s are my travel buddies.
I kinda want one.. Trying my luck on the second hand market to see if can grab a bargain!
