Thailand does have a high speed train it connect all 3 airport in Thailand to Bangkok but for Bangkok to KL it's under construction have to wait another 3 years but for Jakarta to Bandung high speed train it's opening next month
Welcome back to Malaysia! Malaysia used to have the First Class private cabin that you've had in Thailand but they were decommissioned when the electric track completed, which cut the travel time by a significant margin. When the southern part of this project is completed soon, you can travel from Padang Besar at the Thai Border direct to Johor Bahru at the Singapore border without stopping in KL or change train in Gemas in around 8-9 hours from 2 nights journey previously. I wish Malaysia could have something like the ICE 4 train in Germany because they truly should have it - 3 hours max for Padang Besar to KL and 2 hours max from KL to Singapore are well within achievable. Your observation and comment on Southern Thailand is interesting because it was the result of the Bangkok Treaty 1909 between the King of Siam (Thailand) and the British (last colonialist of Malaysia), which essentially split these Muslim provinces in Southern Thailand from the rest of the Malay states in what is now Peninsula Malaysia.
The ETS train that Ken took is already the fastest train in Malaysia and the fastest train on meter gauge in the world (max operating speed:140km/h). If you are hoping for a high speed train train line in Malaysia, there is currently an official proposal for a HSR line between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. In fact the Malaysian government just recently restarted the HSR project. However, even though there were suggestions to further extend the SG-KL HSR line to Penang and Thailand in the past, there still no concrete plan/proposal/feasibility study from the government for that, so it's less likely to be built in the near future.
between rawang to kl sentral i have to say ETS ride is bumpy & slow due to aging track sharing with komuter. After rawang to padang besar average 120-140kmh.
I'd heard that train services between Hat Yai & Malaysia was suspended for a while as the tracks were sabotaged/bombed by insurgents that want to establish an independent state using Thailand's 4 southernmost provinces?
I travelled from Bangkok to Phuket only by hitchhiking! Thai people are very friendly and I waited maximum 10 minutes for someone to pick me up, even army guys pick you up so it's fine. Try it if you want to go out of your comfort zone

The first-class cabin in Thailand is really different, and it feels more comfortable than the ones I saw in other countries before! The overall feeling of the Thai train is very clean, it is a good train! It's a pity that the first class in Malaysia is not a box, so it can't be evaluated, because you have no experience of sleeping on a Malaysian train! Finally, thank you for your sacrifice. You gave up taking the plane to shoot this video for us. I wish you a happy travel in Malaysia! 👍🤩🙌
Malaysia train used to have overnight cabin. After elctric train completed..journey time cut in half. No need cabin anymore. From my experiences Thailand and malaysia cabin train 98% same. Slow and steady, bumpy and keep me wake up every 30 minutes 😅😅
I am a massive fan of travelling by rail. The journey I am planning is from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and from there down to Singapore but with stops for up to three days at a time in Southern Thailand, George Town, Kuala Lumpur and finally Singapore. A major benefit of train travel is that luggage is not weighed and you can take ample suitcases along. The trick to sleeping on a train is to take a sleeping tablet that will knock you out for the night. In my experience I can always get boiling water on a train from before sunrise to late at night and therefore I take along a thermos flask in addition to sachets of hot chocolate and coffee. Stock up on fresh fruit which only requires a pocket knife to prepare. Superficially a train journey is more expensive and takes considerably longer than air travel but that is not the whole equation. Firstly rail travel is one of the best ways to meet local people and to get a real insight into how people outside of the tourist areas actually live. If your journey is 30 hours. it means that you have saved on the cost of at least one (or two) hotel rooms and in my experience you can avoid sleeping in hotels for multiple nights by travelling overnight by train which makes train travel a magnificent option for a budget-traveller.
Welcome back Ken. Sometimes Asia become extremes and harsh for tourist. Malaysia is always the best spot for chilling before the next move. Try to stay few days in Georgetown before move to KL for your business.

The train does go very slowly on the Thailand southern line until the dual lines are finished which supposed to be middle next year. At the moment the train is waiting in many places for other trains to pass. We did an overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok it was about 12-14 hours. Never again sleep on a train. 3-4 hours is enough for sure. In Malaysia we caught fast train from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh and it was very fast and very comfortable. Hi Ken, what a great trip you are taking! I love long traintrips, saves me a lot of money for a hotel and I really sleep well in moving things. But in Thailand I like the second class non aircon better, the beds are wider and softer, and you meet local people that are (mostly) likeminded. My parents always said that the journey is as interesting and important as the destination. When my father retired in 1991 I took my parents on our first backpacking trip toThailand and we slept in several trains. I fell in love with Thailand then, and returned many times. Hello Ken, delighted you will be reporting on slower forms of travel within SE Asia. There are so many flight reports on RUclips and they have become boring. When you travel around Indonesia you must check to see if the new HS (high speed) line between Jakarta and Bandung is operational. Its original opening date has been delayed. This line is built by China and uses Chinese HS trains. In the early days the drivers may be Chinese nationals as it takes time to teach Indonesian nationals to operate HS trains.

Welcome back to Malaysia, Ken. miss you so much. Btw, I won't spend so much times on a train and choose to use plane as SEA have plenty of Low-Cost Airlines.
Really enjoyed this video Ken, I’ll have to do this once I get some free time. I’ll have plenty of it soon, once I get everything squared away and settled. (Just moved to Bangkok, still in the process of finishing the move, waiting on possessions). All the best my friend!
There used to be a sleeper train plying Butterworth(BW)-KL and KL-Johor Bharu(JB) in the 1990's. I used to travel on the train (BW-KL) when I was in uni in the early 1990's. As others have said, the sleeper trains on BW-KL route was decommissioned after the ERL service started. ERL service terminates in Gemas in Negeri Sembilan according to the KTM website. The Gemas-JB stretch is scheduled to start service in 2025. If I'm not mistaken, the only sleeper train service in Peninsular Malaysia is the east coast train from KL to Tumpat, Kelantan. If you want to sleep well, taking a sleeping pill is the best way. Choose one with a short duration of action, so you don't feel groggy when waking up the next day.
I’ve benar looking for a video like this because I’m planning long ago to have a trip by train from Thailand to Malaysia. Thanks for your educational video and experience Ken.
This is great- looking forward to this new series! We cannot wait for the Singapore to Jakarta segment - we are wanting to do this as well! I am very interested to see which routes you end up taking!!
I and my wife prefer 2nd class sleeper train in Thailand,, more happening,, In April this year we bought tickets wooden bench train from Sungai Kolok doing stop over town until Hatyai,,, Single cabin fill lonely,,, 2nd class n third class you can mingle with local and other traveller,,,, Stay safe and stay happy
You're right. There aren't many cities worldwide where you can buy freehold property. Take Kuala Lumpur, for instance. With a well-developed MRT network and reasonable prices, it's a great choice. For around USD 250K to USD 300K, foreigners can get a full-featured apartment with gym and pool. Plus, flying from KL to Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia is quick, around 2.5 hours. And in the future, there'll be a high-speed train to Singapore. Malaysia is very welcoming. Foreigners can easily obtain a three-month visa or simply apply for a Digital Nomad visa with minimal requirements.
This is such a cool little adventure! Thank you for bringing us with you. I feel the same way that sleeping on trains just doesn't work for me :( Imagine if deutsche bahn had sleeper trains!
What's crazy is I just uploaded a video of a 31 hour train journey (5 trains) from Zagreb to London, and that took 31 hours! It's crazy how long the Bangkok - KL one is, but actually it's roughly the same distance as my one!
18:15 - I usually do, out of respect to the people who are there. They play the King's Anthem (rather than the National Anthem) before movies in Thailand, too - in the past everyone would stand, these days no one does, I wonder why.. 🙄 18:52 - if you want the REAL Thai non-aircon experience, you should try the non-aircon Bangkok buses! 😁 I used to ride them to go to the Thai Airforce Museum near Don Mueang, but now they have extended the BTS there, will have to try that the next time I go. The bus ride was over a half hour - only cost 7 baht though.
🇲🇾 I'm excited to be back in Malaysia and for this whole trip! Leave the video a like if you enjoyed watching, that really helps the video to grow 🙏

Selamat kembali ke Malaysia
WELCOME BACK...KEN ABROAD
Welcome Back to Malaysia Ken ...come have roti canai and teh tarik
Welcome back Malaysia 🎉
Welcome back to KL Ken!! 🎉🎉🎉
Your camera's stabiliser must be pretty good; I could hardly tell the Thai train was shaky.
This is great- looking forward to this new series! We cannot wait for the Singapore to Jakarta segment - we are wanting to do this as well! I am very interested to see which routes you end up taking!!
Yes I'm excited for that sement too 😅
Welcome back to Malaysia 🇲🇾
I and my wife prefer 2nd class sleeper train in Thailand,, more happening,,
In April this year we bought tickets wooden bench train from Sungai Kolok doing stop over town until Hatyai,,,
Single cabin fill lonely,,,
2nd class n third class you can mingle with local and other traveller,,,,
Stay safe and stay happy
Welcome to Malaysia
A wonderful v-log! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Welcome back to Malaysia Ken!

This is such a cool little adventure! Thank you for bringing us with you. I feel the same way that sleeping on trains just doesn't work for me :( Imagine if deutsche bahn had sleeper trains!
Actually there is one sleeper train in Germany. I watched a documentary about it recently. It goes from Hamburg to Austria.
Welcome back Ken.Hope you ll have a good time.
Welcome back to Malaysia, Ken!!!
Wow... welcome back to Malaysia!
Need my yearly Malaysia time 😆💪
Welcome back Ken. 🥰
Selamat Pulang Ke Malaysia!
What's crazy is I just uploaded a video of a 31 hour train journey (5 trains) from Zagreb to London, and that took 31 hours! It's crazy how long the Bangkok - KL one is, but actually it's roughly the same distance as my one!
Going out of your comfort zone is very good. Also you get to see the amazing view. That you cannot see if you take a flight instead 😊
Welcome back Ken... it's been a long time... ✌
I live there and i'm proud of this video
Welcome back to M'sia
