  • The quickest way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai Thailand is to take one of the dozens of daily flights that can cost as little as $30 (1,100THB) but is it the BEST way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
    We decided to book a first class private cabin on train number 13 to find out if taking the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok Thailand's new Bang Sue Grand Station to Chiang Mai is still worth it in 2023.
    Which overnight train is best from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
    The newest sleeper train is "Number 9" which departs Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 18:40. The first class cabins on train number 9 look beautiful, but unfortunately it was fully booked when we were travelling so we booked train "Number 13" which departs at 20:05
    How long is the journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
    The train left promptly at 20:05 and arrived in Chiang Mai around 08:45. Sometimes there can be delays but it should take less than 13 hours in total.

    I’ve done two overnight train journeys in Thailand. The first was from Bangkok to Surat Thani (on my way to Koh Phangan). I opted for the communal compartment rather than a private cabin, as I was travelling alone and I just seemed an unnecessary expense. It was a great experience, I was chatting with a couple across the aisle, who were from the U.K., like me, talking about our travels. When the staff member came and made our beds up, I thought I might have trouble sleeping with the movement of the train, but I was out like a light and had the best night’s sleep I’d had in ages. Woke up, nice and early, to views of the jungle.
    The second time was on the same journey you did, although I went from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. 8 had a couple of hours to kill before my train and I don’t like having to rush, so I went to a little cafe next to the station. They had a beautiful little garden, with a pond and some fish, and I relaxed there with some food and several mango smoothies to cool down. Slept just as well as the previous trip, although there was hardly anyone in my compartment, just a couple of people and we were spread out, so no conversation.
    I much prefer the train to catching a plane. It may take longer, but I’m travelling through the night, so I’m asleep anyway. It was much cheaper than a flight when I went, so it saved me money, plus it’s one less night I have to pay for a hotel. Also, it’s a lot less hassle than boarding a plane, and much more comfortable. To me, it’s like going back to your hotel at night, except the hotel is a train and I get to wake up in a whole new city.

      @WhereNextFamily  10 месяцев назад +6

      Thanks for sharing your experience 😊 Yes you're right it's a lot less hassle and actually saves the price of a hotel for the night as well 🙌

      @@WhereNextFamily I've taken flights (more expensive back then @ maybe 3-3500THB) but more often the buses from CM/BK @ around 600THB one way. They turn the aircon onto ultra-chryo mode, presumably to encourage sleep under a supplied blanket. They stop part way so anyone can get off and have a meal, and you get a "breakfast" onboard before you hit the final destination. Really not bad by coach I'd say - never tried the trains though.

    • @jamesportrais3946
      @jamesportrais3946 10 месяцев назад +2

      Following your conclusion (and I'm not up to date on current prices) unless you're getting a kick from scenery, an all inclusive overinght coach (you don't pay extra for your stop off meal or the "breakfast") is pretty good. Flights are cheap right now, but expect them to reinflate to pre-pandemic prices soon (unless we get another!).
      Might be useful to know that certainly in Chiangmai, a typical unskilled wage is 10,000THB/month before stoppages - serving coffee, working in a postal dept or killing chickens in a factory, 10,000THB is almost a blanket wage. Agricultural workers get as little as 300THB/day. Average wages in this order are more like 15,000THB/month for Bangkok as you might expect.
      A pint bottle of Chang beer (lager) is around 60 THB
      A packet of 20 cigarettes is around 70 THB
      A cheap meal can be bought for as little as 30 THB
      Overall, the cost of living in Thailand is 1/5th that of the UK, and it never gets genuinely cold. If you're a puss like me, you'll want aircon so expect electricity bills in the order of

      My wife booked us overnight to Vientiane, Laos. The seats were converted to single beds 5 foot long. I am over 6 foot tall, so could not get comfortable. When arrived next morning i had developed kidney failure. I spent the next week in a hotel room to recover. Then we had a very nice vacation in Laos. Then i booked airline tickets to fly back to Bangkok.

    When I was young a few decades ago), my mom and aunt took us three kids to CM. We travelled by overnight train from Bkk. It was so much fun. I still remember that on the way back from CM to Bkk we bought some local food from the Varorot Market (sticky rice, local herbal sausage, fried pork, local green chilly paste) and had our dinner on the train. It was so delicious as we were eating good food on a train. It was such a good memory for us children. ❤😊 😊❤

    Hey Guys - just stumbled across your channel and watched some of your videos, and i must say its so nice watching your family travel videos, because they are authentic, i am annoyed that YT keeps pushing these family videos on me where the families confess to giving their children the true life experience, yet they are waited on hand and foot from luggage being carried for them and staying in hotels with personal butlers and traveling first class, that will not teach their children the real world, only that they can have anything they want, and life is not always like that - but your videos show how a real family can do things and i admire you for taking your daughter on this amazing journey - I am older now and did my travels before the age of youtube and smart phones and travelled all over the world, but then family life got in the way and work etc, my children will be 18 soon and i intend on travelling again to see how things have changed over the last 25 years, i am sure i will need to adapt my travels based on my age now, but i look forward to it and i will be binge watching some of your playlists to get me motivated - Thanks

    I have rode that sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and back to Bangkok. The first trip I selected the cheaper common car sleeper ($15) and it wasn't that bad. I don't recall them having a "dining car" at that time, we were served our meals in our seats before the stewards converted them into beds. Once you got used to the motion of the train, sleeping was no problem! The only issue was the bathrooms ...the "toilet" was basically just a hole in the floor of the train!💩
    My second excursion on the sleeper was in a private room, ($30), better bed and more room.
    The only problem there was the guy in the next compartment! He was smoking in his room, which is not allowed, and he got angry when I complained. I don't smoke and Turkish cigarettes STINK! The stewards threatened to put him off the train at the next stop if he continued to smoke!
    I also tried the day time train to Chiang Mai. The scenery was amazing! I saw a lot of Thailand on that trip! In total, I was in Thailand for about 6 months ....my heart💘 is still there!🦂🙏🥂

      Awesome story 🙌
      Yes the toilet on the older train is still a hole in the floor 🤣 but it's OK and it was clean 🙂
      We have also done the communal sleeper area before as well and enjoyed it. This time we only went private as we were with our daughter.
      Thanks for watching, and I hope you get the chance to visit again one day 🙏

    So glad I found this video I wads drawn because I was researching for a hopeful future trip that I am planning, besides the fact I was wondering weather to take the train (agree also with lovely Malia train rides are exiting) or plane, I was also drawn to such a lovely, charming, beautiful family you are. You speak very eloquently and are so likable that I had to subscribe. Thank you for the information and look forward to more videos

    It's a huge terminal because of the China Belt & Road initiative where they are sharing the cost with Thailand to built a high speed train from Bejing to Signapore through Thailand. Rail travel will be expanded and will be more common than flying in 5-10 years.

    Special trip in Vietnam...Hoi An to Hue day train. Takes about 2hrs 30 minutes and the scenery is spectacular coastline and mountains and absolute jungle...over hellfire pass. Cost maybe 5 dollars, the bus goes throgh tunnels and you see nothing. Oh yes go to to the ancient capital of Hue. The city Westmoorland had to destroy to save !

    This came up in my feed. Great vlog. As you called it, depends on your agenda. Some of the views you had here were for me priceless, and to a certain extent a main reason why you're heading up north in the first place...the jungle, the hills, the mist. The old Hua Lamphong Station was a sauna yet so much part of the experience. Had a couple mates on separate trips get food poisoning from evening meals, cold beers all good...but there was nothing like the rocking of the train whilst you were trying to get to sleep. Loved it. Yes get stung on train food...sabai, sabai. Wonderful trip down memory lane for an old fella. 😂🙏

    การรถไฟไม่มีการปรับปรุงเรื่องราคาอาหาร ต้องมีมาตรฐานในการตรวจสอบผู้ที่ประมูลขายอาหารบนรถไฟ มัดมือชกมาตลอดหลายสิบปีแล้ว คนไทยส่วนมากรับรู้ แต่ต่างชาติมักไม่ทราบแบบเคสนี้เป็นต้น ขอโทษครอบครัวของนักท่องเที่ยวสามคนนี้ด้วยครับ.
