I know a girl who is pure-blooded mexican (yes, from mexico) and she got into columbia university (the Ivy in New York) on pure academic merit and won several scholarships. she proves that latinas (or whatever the term is) can and do succeed.
"Latina women don't do good in school..." DO WELL. The fact that that deplorable grammar came out of Brittany's mouth completely devalued her point. There are multi-millionaires of every race and what has she accomplished?
"I was taught to be racist" Here is my problem with that phrase, he is a grown man. At a certain point you gain the maturity to make decision for yourself and to think independently. That excuse is valid, it's not that he was taught to be racist, he is choosing to be.
I'm Mexican and my mom didn't teach me Spanish because she didn't want me to get behind in school. People always assume I speak Spanish and its kinda embarrassing that I don't because I can't even understand my grandparents. She taught me English to be ahead, but I'm leading Spanish anyway right now so it all works out
That Christian guy needs to stop saying "oh where I'm from we were thought to be racist.. " you aren't thought it brought up to be racist l, you choose to be racist regardless of your beliefs.
I totally agree with your statement. I know many people who have risen above situations that they were raised in like abuse, racism, and religion oppression. I myself have risen from the perception my grandparents had against homosexuality and proudly come out as a straight woman who 100% supports any type of marriage and relationship, despite gender. These people need to learn to rise above the influence, like someone would if they were under the influence of drugs or other things.
Those two families looked no different to me, regardless of their skin colour. I don't see how you can judge someone's financial situation on their skin colour before you've even TALKED to that person.
that Christian dude keeps bringing everything back to his hometown. maybe he should just leave there? and also, maybe he could learn to speak better (less slurry) when hes in a big city...
Honestly when im out in the streets and i see a mum with their children and babies - whatever race she is, i dont care, all i think about is how cute her children and babies are.
i'm from texas and honestly...the only rude thing, in this area, i've ever heard, was some dbag making comments about it being white man's time to show up for slavery when obama was first elected? i rolled on and stated, "well you owe 'such and such amount of money' on this harley davidson you financed. soooo. lets go ahead and set you a payment up". he got quiet. yeah. this guy right here worked for harley davidson financial services. you wouldn't believe the stories i heard about their ability to not pay. don't heap things on others when you, yourself are struggling.
My mother has three children. She is black. We all have the same father. My parents are married .My dad is a black man. He has a job as a Manager for one of the biggest companies on my island. My mother is a secretary for the Government. Both of my parents have been through school. They have masters degree's. None of my siblings or I have dropped out of school. We have always been the best in our classes. My brother is doing his masters at a major University in Greece and My sister is in Collage.
Ha. i am a blonde 20 yr old with 2 siblings. My dad abandoned me at age 15. My mom was in prison for 10 yrs. Grew up with abuse and neglect. Race doesnt determine how you treat your kids.
This breaks my heart to see this STILL going on, how manipulated and wrongly led these people are, watching this entire show on this subject has literally brought tears to my eyes. I'm not angry at these people for saying what they say or how they think I just want to cry and feel remorse for each and everyone of these people. This is truly horrific.
OMG! I am a white woman and I am having a hard time getting by. I worry about stuff every day. I worry about wether I can pay my bills every month. It doesn't matter what color your skin is or what your religon is we all can end up struggle. And we all can get educated.
Now imagine that hard time of getting by… in addition to experiencing systematic racism, prejudice and stereotypes because of how you look, being looked down upon not only because you are struggling but because of who you are. It is not the same Gwen. Period. It’s not an olympic competition. It’s just the truth. It’s harder.
I love how everyone is blaming their parents for their ideals. They are all grown as fuck! If they don't get in the house by the time the street lights come on, they shouldn't still abide by racist rules.
Its interesting that when they showed the mom with kids clip, despite the fact the white mom was wearing yoga pants and a hoodie and the black mother wearing diamond earrings, expensive handbag and a sharp coat.. they still said they thought she looked like she was on welfare.
For now whites are the majority in the united states (I believe that's predicted to not be true in 2015 when the cumulative minorities will be the majority of people in the united states compared to JUST caucasians) but our country was founded on racism. With more generations and the advancement of communication-technology there are more opportunities to be educated and dispel these beliefs but they still exist--quite strongly in many places. Regardless of what we say or how we feel, race does exist in our society--it shouldn't--but it does. It's a socially constructed "truth" which will only go away if our history disappears and many generations pass/we are so threatened that we literally unite as an entire race/species to protect ourselves for the greater interest (that's some movie sh!t right there, so don't count on it). So I guess what I'm trying to get at here is that yes, racism and prejudice exist and they are terrible, sometimes unfathomable (in the form of hate crimes) but it is with education and a look into our history (not the one your parents taught you, or your holy book (although reading holy books is a great way to get history too!)) that we really begin to realize our place in it all and really understand what it means to be a minority or majority. The scales are tipped, and it's not fair but individually we can take part in changing that. I don't know where this came from, but I felt compelled to write it. Sorry if I offended anyone or if it doesn't make sense. I'm not trying to make anyone believe anything they don't want to believe, I just want you to think.
Christian, look at Tyra..... tell me what you see.... exactly a well educated Black woman who is not on well-fare and has a great life. Many Black women and African Americans in general are doing well in their lives and shouldn't be treated this way. I'm African American, my parents are happy together, not on well-fare, not to lazy to work (my father always had a job from teen years to now), we live fine. I'm sick and tired of people thinking that skin tone matters changes a person's personality
Something that I did notice is that the only black guy wasn't asked about his comment to the other black girl for calling her a "sell out" because she's dated a white guy? hows that being a "sell out" that's a little racist right there because not every white person is bad?? I saw stereotypes coming from every direction of the table. I agree that a lot of it is being uneducated especially when it comes to christian, and Britney they love to use the excuse that it comes from where they "live" but their old enough to understand that its ignorance that's passed on from another generation and that our society has grown to accept a lot of people. I also wanted to comment on something that christian said about Spanish not having the decency of "learning out language" why should we make them learn our language when we could have the decency of putting their language on things as well {which is what we've done} do you know how hard it is to learn a different language? its not the easiest thing to learn coming from a different country or if that's your native language why should we make spanish people learn English?
As a Mexican girl and proud Latina even I wish people would stop looking at other Hispanic people and assuming they are mexican because I know that if that was me I would get sick and tired if it really quickly
A lot of Brazilians also speak Spanish. Plus, Brazilians consider themselves to be Latinos, regardless of the Portuguese language or of their skin complexion.
I'm Brazilian, yes there people can speak Spanish, but more people that can pay for a Spanish course, like people that can speak english, german etc etc etc.... but our mother language is Portuguese and is diferente from Portugal. Like English from USA is different from England.
We are Latinos! Don't matter if your grandmother was german and your grandfather was French, if you born in Brasil u are Brazilian, you are Latino just because is in south America/ Latin America. But u have different downward. only this!
So sad... Carlos turning to that shocked when she spoke Spanish... and why? Deep down he had the perception because she was African American (black), she couldn't speak Spanish... EVERYBODY IN LIFE HAS PERCEPTIONS ALL THE TIME ABOUT EVERYTHING
i am gypsy from Europe and all i have seen during my travelling n living abroad that masha'Allah black people are beame well educated even if they dont have academic education yet they polite.I cannot say bad of black, asians, white ,muslim or jewish CUZ u find good and bad people in every race, culture or ethnicity.... i luv the fact blks and latino(a)s come in so many colors . i luv the fact that there is ppl n da world who can understand this . nd its priceless that ppl can further teach ignorant ppl that this is the damn case . :)
The people in this episode just really shock me because I'm from Singapore, a multi racial society. I've been raised amongst people of different races and I have friends of many different races as well. It's a big part of being a Singaporean and people shouldn't be discriminated for their race or even just their skin tone. Even though in Singapore, racial stereotypes are still present, it's still not as prominent as the people in the show here have shown.
It's sad how true this is in the real world. When I was 12 years old I learned it was almost a crime for me to walk to school every at least 3 day out of the school week me and my friends was stopped handcuffed and frisked.
i agree. the video showed her (the latina woman) looking at the folder, seemingly explaining work to the white woman, and then handing it off as if telling her to finish this or something.
The women with children segment. 1.both mother are women with accountability and responsibility and that is good. 2. A person who have to take care of a lot of children with less resources is the most skillful. 3.motherhood require unselfish commitment so i can't judge too much. 4. What you give a kid is one things what the kid give to the world is the kid personal choice. 5. Jesus Christ was born in a stable everything that he had was given to him by his friends and strangers.
Black people are not discriminated. Even on children shows such as disney channel asian people are always ridiculed but black people are NEVER discriminated against.
I was not posting an opinion on the issue, simply facts. Brazilians are for the MOST part Portuguese. Portuguese is both a language and a people! This is common knowledge available at a local library or the internet if you so chose. Obviously if a Cuban couple moves here and has kids here, their children are Hispanics/ Latinos, I threw this in there because you might like to play the semantics game! Brazilian is their national identity. This post is about ethnicity, not national identity.
Im black and i understand what she ment when she said white women dont struggle. I think she ment it more as in being judged and generally life in america is easier for white folks because they are the majority and dont have as much discrimination. Struggles dont always have to be money it can just be the way people look at you. Even though im only 14 i understand i guess its hard to explain if your not colored. And im not racist against anyone we all have to get along on this planet.
She's shown her natural hair before and she loves it. She wears her hair straight because she may prefer it that way, not to fool people into thinking that's her natural hair.
And where I live, my friend who is black, his dad came from Harvard University, and once someone told me my black friend looked poor and maybe she's fatherless, but actually her dad graduated from Stanford University and her mom was from Yale - People please don't judge !!!!!!
There are some people who look like others but are part of another race. For example, I could say Kim Kardashian, Nicole Scherzinger, and Roselyn Sanchez. All 3 women do look alike but they each come from a different race.
I'm sick of people using "I was brought up this way" as an excuse for being complacent towards ignorance and aligning themselves with it. You can rise above it, but some choose not to.
can we all just agree that stereotypes hurt ALL races. " the white woman doesnt have any problems" are you serious? people of all colors and races have problems. a hard or easy life does not see color it all comes down to the person.also as a black/native american im tired of black, mexicans etc. people calling white people racist and then turn around and say racist things about them. its true that these stereotypes are everywhere but personally i choose to see it as a challenge to disprove them
Brazilians are neither Latinos or Hispanics.... I was not posting an opinion on the issue.
Maybe it's because I'm a 90s kid, maybe it's because I'm in the "new generation." But I just see people, YES, I see colors too. But never as anything negative. I'm black (mixed, but I say "black" it's easier) I have a white best friend, I'm attracted to hispanics, I love asian culture, and I think muslim women in their headwraps are beautiful. People need to learn from the NEW generation, we may be young but most of us are extremely open or blind with race. We need to knock out racism for good!
Brittany's comment: "Latina's don't do GOOD in school." It's actually, "Latina's don't do WELL in school." It kind of shows how well she did in school. I am not trying to be mean but I'm trying to get people to realize that a lot of what we hate about other people are things that we hate about ourselves. GET IT TOGETHER. STOP RACISM.
Hispania is ancient Roman term to refer to the Iberian peninsula. The region hasn't been called "Hispania" for thousands of years. Furthermore, just because two ethnic groups occupy the same geographical region, it does not make them "the same"
spain is in europe its a peninsula. SPAIN- EUROPE im not referring spanish people to the whole latin america. if you mean spanish by people who talk spanish then yes of course there's mixed dark and yellow. dominicans, mexicans, peruvians.. people who live in spain are most white caussians. its not a very big country. u can look it up on google where spain is located :) again spanish people from spain latinos -- people who speak spanish in america.
PORTUGUESE PERSON SPEAKING HERE: in brazil they speak in PORUGUESE, in portugal we speak PORTUGUESE too. SPANISH IS IN SPAIN AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES COLONISED BY SPAIN. just because we are close to spain, doesn't mean we speak spanish, actually we are two really different countries
"That's what I was taught... Well, where I grew up..." How can people be so ignorant? Do they ever think for themselves or try to gain their own opinions? It amazes me how many people refuse to see beyond their set-in-stone walls of hatred.
@Antigunitkat Brazilians are Brazilians, not Portuguese. They speak Portuguese. We don't call Americans or Australians or Nigerians, English just because that's the dominant language.
These stereotypes are set in people's mind. Some people just assume these things without even thinking about it. Now days people think these things even if they don't want to.
The reason why Spaniards are called spaniards is bc Spanish is not a specific term to describe a person from Spain. If a person from Spain says, "I am spanish" people probably think, "what part of mexico?"
My family is mixed with so many cultures from Hispanic, British, African and Asian. But because I'm black. When they ask me where i'm from they think I'm joking just cause if my colour
I am completely non racist. Color is beautiful and different and I think u should embrace the color u have. However when I see someone say white women don't struggle it hurts me deep inside. Both my grandparents were white and well off they both died from depression wich is the biggest struggle ever. Everyone is human we all have stress and we all struggle weather black white, green or purple!
05:31 - "...don't see a lot of Latinas that...do good in school..." Apparently, neither did you; it's "do WELL in school."
GAGGED

I know, right?! That is NO excuse, if you truly think it is not okay you would think against what you were taught.
"What college?" SLAY
Carlos is too cute :)
@ermoney14, No, I'm white. The lady said if you're a white woman you never have to worry about anything.
haha Carlos and Tyra flirting hardcore
Brittany's comment: "Latina's don't do GOOD in school." It's actually, "Latina's don't do WELL in school." It kind of shows how well she did in school. I am not trying to be mean but I'm trying to get people to realize that a lot of what we hate about other people are things that we hate about ourselves. GET IT TOGETHER. STOP RACISM.
The family looked pretty well off; they didn't look broke at all !
Hispania is ancient Roman term to refer to the Iberian peninsula. The region hasn't been called "Hispania" for thousands of years. Furthermore, just because two ethnic groups occupy the same geographical region, it does not make them "the same"
spain is in europe its a peninsula. SPAIN- EUROPE
im not referring spanish people to the whole latin america.
if you mean spanish by people who talk spanish then yes of course there's mixed dark and yellow. dominicans, mexicans, peruvians..
people who live in spain are most white caussians. its not a very big country.
u can look it up on google where spain is located :)
again spanish people from spain
latinos -- people who speak spanish in america.
PORTUGUESE PERSON SPEAKING HERE:
in brazil they speak in PORUGUESE, in portugal we speak PORTUGUESE too.
One thing is for sure! I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that my children don't get stuck in stereotypes!
These stereotypes are set in people's mind. Some people just assume these things without even thinking about it. Now days people think these things even if they don't want to.
"Latino" is more frequently used to refer more generally to anyone of Latin American origin or ancestry, including Brazilians.
Everyone is human we all have stress and we all struggle weather black white, green or purple!
i love that tyra said more hispanic ethnicities because it doesnt mean im mexican only cause i speak spanish!!..there are more ethnicities!
I love tyra
