    The absolutely beautiful silliness of crossing a literal moat to the front of a grand castle door just to have a hand-written note on lined paper letting you know they are out for lunch is... so deeply funny and cute to me. Graham, regarding your observation about the roads in England. I lived in northern Italy for three years as a child and enjoyed watching my mom and dad drive through narrow tunnels and openings barely wide enough to fit our 1966 Chevy Corvair Monza (late style Corvair). (My dad was USAF.) The USAF school busses (Bluebirds and Internationals) were even more fun on those same roads. And this was in the early 1980s.
    You and I are from relatively young countries and are used to municipalities that could build their infrastructure with modern vehicles in mind. For Europe, much of their public thoroughfares predate the Horseless Carriage. Before about 150 years ago, the main measuring stick for how wide a road should be was the ox cart or horse drawn carriages. And most of those tended to be less than eight feet wide. And widening the roads to accommodate modern vehicular traffic is either going to be very expensive or not possible with the existing structures around. So, yes, you're going to see things like DoubleDecker busses on what we could generously call "paved over goat paths". This makes them quaint. But you said quaint was fun. (And I agree.)

    The reason they don't look like buffalo in North America is because the Buffalo in North America aren't in fact buffalo. The American Buffalo, Bison bison, is as its scientific name suggests actually a species of bison and is recognised as such however the name American Buffalo is still taught in history (in England that is and I assume its the same in North America). They were incorrectly labelled as buffalo by the first European settlers on the continent. What you saw were actual buffalo in the tribe Bubalina. Bison are in the sister genus to our cattle whilst buffalo are more distantly related.

    The UK has a proud history of Aviation. Around 750 airfields have existed over the last century or so, most of which were created for WWII and many of the ones that exist now are still used for military purposes, with some for civilian use. When I first moved to Alaska, I was surprised by the… fervor for roadkill. Here, though, it is moose, which are significantly bigger than those little deer. Collision with them is generally fatal to the vehicle as well as the animal. But there are still Rules. There is a “Charity List” which is not, as I first thought, a list of food pantries who could use game meat, but a call list of people in the area with the means and motivation to come out (often in the middle of the night) and butcher roadkill moose. I did have to get over my initial “but it’s roadkill” reaction, it is hundreds of pounds of (mostly) serviceable meat that would go to waste otherwise. Fascinating to see the equivalent in Olde England. Greatly enjoying the travel vblog, Graham, and can echo the other commenters that your cousin James is a treasure!

    Graham, they are beach sheds. People don’t live in them. They store their beach stuff in them, like towels, swimming costumes and surfboards. Some people decorate them to be nice instead as a retreat for when they on the beach but only a fool put anything edible in them as they’re a nice home for mice and rats.

    • @ZephyrKelsey
      @ZephyrKelsey 2 месяца назад +3

      Yeah he mentioned that specifically. He talked about how they’re not meant to be primary residence and people store their beach things in them. They were talking about hypothetically living in them, probably because property in Victoria is ridiculous XD

    • @Zabzim
      @Zabzim 2 месяца назад

      @@ZephyrKelsey no he didn’t. Yes it may have dawned on him when looking the one that was for sale that these are non residential properties. But this wasn’t made clear through his body language or speech, so I believe he simply didn’t know. It is after all a uniquely British custom to return to the same holiday location every year¹ (if not two or three times a year) to warrant owning a beach huts in the first place.
      Like how he mentioned how most of them are boarded up but if you look through the footage, none of them are boarded up in the British term they are just locked tight which is completely understandable since that isn’t beach weather. Nor is it the school holidays.
      ¹Actually it’s not really uniquely British as a lot of European do this too. But I’m not sure American/Canadians do this.

    Not to sound like the local tourist board, but if you like seeing buffalo in the New Forest then you might very well enjoy going to see the recently-reintroduced European bison population at Blean, which is near Canterbury. Canterbury also has the advantage of having an enormous, important cathedral - another of those UNESCO World Heritage Site thingies of which you may have heard - as well as moanstic gardens, beautiful architecture, the place Legolas went to school, and a pub for every day of the year. It's well worth a visit, and you can get on the high-speed train from St. Pancras and be there (or indeed pretty much anywhere else on that line) in about an hour. Just don't get off at Thanet Parkway, there's literally nothing there =]

    I'm very jealous of James' workshop. I've got the same printer and completely sympathize with Penelope getting absorbed by printing.

    I had to pause out of curiosity to see what those beach huts look like inside, and yeah, some have seating and gas stoves and people will decorate them, but they are basically just dressed up storage sheds.

    Graham and Kathleen being slightly bewildered by beach houses is something I wasn't expecting from this series 😂

    I cannot believe Cousin James pulled an RFK Jr. on that deer. Astonishing.

    It's very odd watching my favourite RUclipsrs wandering around the town where I used to live and had the happiest times of my life. Proposed to my wife pretty much exactly where you cut into the rain storm, and we had our wedding photos in Prior Park, in 2002, so we may well have walked past each other...

    It's kind of funny about the comments on roadkill. I don't know how Canadians view Roadkill as a food source, but in the US, it's kind of looked down on, as something "only those in rural parts of the south do". Not something I'd expect polite Englishmen to do. But cultures differ in all sorts of places in the world.
    As for me, I can't eat it. Because the animal was struck by a car, it renders the meat "treif". (Treif being Yiddish word for "torn by beasts".) If it wasn't felled by a skilled butcher and didn't die instantly, it's not considered Kosher. Otherwise, deer are kosher animals. My reaction to this would be to make sure the animal wasn't still suffering, then move it off the road where it can "rejoin the environment and return to the forest."
