Its also important to remember 2 things:
    1. Depression lies. Constantly. There is always hope and there is always a way to healing.
    2. Starting with the easiest possible thing to feel better can quickly or slowly (no judgement) snowball into great habits and lifestyle changes that make a big difference over time.
A year ago i felt hopeless. Now i workout, spend hours in nature, eat healthy, i stopped smoking and got into therapy. Everything can change in a year. Am i happy all the time? Heck no. But im a lot happier than i was.

For real, your brain lies to you. I also realized during a particularly hard time that feelings just kind of happen to you. Like if you really pay attention, you'll notice they ebb and flow, changing in response to stimuli both seen and unnoticed. Like sometimes a thing happens and you're sad, but other times that same thing can happen and you're not sad. I started treating my emotions more like weather. They're a large complex system that kind of runs on its own, and you can do different things in response to it to ride out different moments of weather in various degrees of comfort, but it doesn't necessarily define you as a person. Like you don't redefine your identity because it's raining on a day where you want to go for a walk. You just put on the proper clothes for going on a walk in the rain.

So for the majority of people SSRIs aren't the answer. Maybe just maybe CBT with light exercise is the answer. The problem is everybody wants a pill that solves normal feelings often. Consider every single little thing, no matter how small, a win or accomplishment. It helps boost morale when you feel you have done something, no matter how insignificant it may seem to other people, because anything is extremely difficult when you are in that hole. Getting out of bed, getting dressed, brushing your hair, doing chores, getting food, drinking water, etc. anything can be a win.
It is amazing how much sunshine and fresh air can do for your mood and energy. Sit outside, don't worry about doing anything, just sit or lay. Listen to the birds and insects. You can go for a walk if you feel up to it.

Exercise absolutely helps fight depression. There have been numerous studies on this. It's not just the "taking your mind off your problems" aspect that helps, there are are physiological changes that occur when you exercise that change your brain chemistry and alleviate depression.

    • @maiahN
      @maiahN 2 месяца назад

I'm so sorry you've been struggling with that. I know how easy it is to feel like you can't see a way out. I've been dealing with anxiety, depression, ocd, for almost 10 years. And no medication, therapy or "self help" has given me more true joy and peace as deciding to call out to Jesus and live for him. Please know how deeply loved you are by Jesus, he wants to know you and help you. Call out to him and ask him for help and truth. He saved me and He can save you too if you ask for it. God gave me this verse for you. You don't have to be a prisoner to depression, surrender it to Jesus.
"I will say to the prisoners, ‘Come out in freedom,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Come into the light.’ They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare." Isaiah 49:9

    • @samstromberg5593

Okay aaaand if you want to get better without “surrendering” to religion that’s totally okay and as it turns out people who aren’t religious can still be happy
My guy made 3 great points but I want to elaborate on one and add one
His first point - don’t define yourself as Sad but just as a person who is temporarily sad. This is seriously so huge. It sounds super weird to outsiders but there’s a big thing with Sad people about “I’m not bad enough to get help yet” and it kind of turns competitive because let’s be real most things in life are. It’s okay to get better, and things ARE better when you’re okay. Maybe this isn’t a problem for you in which case that’s okay - everybody’s manifests differently and yours is still valid - but it was a huge one for me
And positive self talk is so unbelievably huge. I know sometimes it can feel like you have to lie to get that, but I can confirm you don’t. Maybe you really ARE good at that thing everyone tells you you’re good at. Maybe they’re NOT all lying to you and your depression is. Maybe you’re NOT weak for eating enough calories - maybe you are in fact a healthy weight and your anorexia is lying to you. Even if it feels like you have to lie - that’s okay, your feelings are lying to you so it’s only fair play. Hold on to the words of those people you trust - they wouldn’t lie to you. They DO love you, even if it doesn’t feel like it. So a huge one is just
Every time you catch yourself saying something mean to yourself, stop yourself and say something nice. It doesn’t even have to be true, it just has to be nice. It helped me to picture 2 different parts of me, like imaginary friends. Kevin told me mean things about myself but Jean could always step in and stop him because she was stronger. I knew that she was stronger because I created them, because they were parts of me. So I got to decide
      Anyway
      I hope this helps
You still deserve to get better if you don’t care for religion - that’s my case
Maybe it takes long enough that you stop believing this, but it gets easier. This is a winnable battle. I believe in you

It's recognition that depression can be debilitating and celebrating any action in the face of that. Any step forward, however much it's pushed back, is a step in the right direction

Yeah. I had a huge problem with this for many years. Every day, it felt like my friends were just putting up with me. I knew it wasn't true, but I couldn't convince myself. I was also doing terribly in class, almost failing. It didn't help that I couldn't focus, and I'm sure I have undiagnosed ADHD. This only stopped being quite as bad last year, but it's still not 100% fixed. I'm still not sure what I did to get to where I am now. It really feels like I woke up one day and it was better.

For most people are depressed (note that I said most - everybody’s manifests differently) it’s technically not so much sadness as like … numbness? You just don’t - can’t - feel anything. But when you DO muster the fight to care about something, Nobody likes you, you’re worthless, nobody likes you, the world would be better off without you, nobody likes you, things won’t get better - oh, and if that wasn’t enough. Nobody likes you
And because depression uses people’s own voices, they believe it. Cause it’s them telling themselves and who do we believe more than ourselves

      Dude that’s actually genius
It was showering for me and then now as I’m getting better it’s not so much doing ANYTHING that I can’t care about but just the little things. Like eating breakfast. I can’t decide what I want so I just don’t eat. Helps me to have a goto food, so if nothing stands out at me (which it never does) I’ll have oatmeal for breakfast and eggs for lunch

@@samstromberg5593 I read a blog post once pointing out that for them personally (and it's pretty true for me too) that 99% of their executive dysfunction problems are because they get stuck in a decision and then get distracted. Their example was, in fact, taking a shower. They liked to listen to music in the shower; in this particular instance, they'd been distracted by social media while picking out a playlist.
Their advice was "whenever you catch yourself stuck by executive dysfunction, ask yourself what decision you're supposed to be making" I've found that even when it's not a decision tripping me up, that approaching the problem from this new angle is REALLY helpful 8D

For me it was showering and shaving every day. It sounds stupid but it was something I was doing every day before going to sh1t, so getting back to it helped me build momentum to live again.

Some simple, maybe even silly things like going barefoot on grass and doing some rolls, backrolls, hand standing, tree climbing, I enjoy so much. Simple existing in nature feels like world could be just as simple as living in wood cabine. Thou you do not need to abandon sociality :D
