      Yes, my yoga teacher sometimes used breathing for relaxing the muscles, with breathing deep into the core body, or only into parts of the ribcage. She described it as a massage from inside, and that fits. (Of course these exercises also help with using the full lung volume.)

      In general, anything that stretches muscles around the abdominal area, or even the abdominal muscles, but without being directly painful to your abdomen, is good.
      While this is only a personal experience, I'm having a lot of luck with simply yoga for warm-ups (cat-cow, butterfly, sometimes downward dog), and then adding thigh and lower back stretches of any kind I can take to that. For as long as I am able to move, I aim towards things that in general “open me” in regards to flexibility, and that works well enough.
      Since this is highly personal, even if he were to make an exercise list, it would still be best if you adjusted it to work with your body's limits.

    This video really helped confirm what I was feeling all week. Any restless leg type symptoms or stiffness has gone away with isometric type contractions. Simply flexing my glutes as hard as I can seems to do more for my hips than any of the stretching I tried, and it tends to be the contracting muscle that feels best for me after a "stretch". I think so much of this is nervous system related and that electrical energy needs to flow and get used up or things start to lose proper function.

    People should not underestimate how actually useful being flexible can be in day to day life. Im naturally very flexible and don't stretch as much as I should. But I had a major surgery 24 hours ago that basically has ny entire torso wrapped in a stiff binder and will leave me with about 2 foot of scars. Can't use my arms much. Can't bend any part of my torso or even sit up straight or lay flat. Can't get a normal shirt on. I tried. LOL
    I have had friends have the same surgery who said they couldn't get themselves out of bed for days (can't use your arms in any major ways after this procedure.)
    My shoulders are flexible and not stiff. Its been a literal life saver. Between that and having strong hands/wrists, I can do quite a lot. I can't reach across my front but I can reach behind my back to get stuff.
    Being able to deep squat to reach things Ive droooed and get off the floor without use of my arms or moving my torso has been critical. Being able to balance on one leg and move my knee to chest level has made it possible to get my shoes on quickly.
    Everyone should be practicing flexibility and balance. It's good for much more than cool tricks. If youre 120% where the average person is, you'll have that same advantage when you need it most. I made it to 33 without a single surgery but I've had more movement and less pain than my younger friends had after it. And y'all, I'm short (5'3) and fat (190 lbs) with short arms (negative wingspan) . You dont have to be long and thin to be flexible.

    Hi David! Long-time fan with a weird question:
    Do you find that active stretching causes temporary flexibility loss while your muscles are adapting to the new load demands in extended positions? I've started adding Active Stretches to my Splits routine on two of the four days I drill Splits, and I've found that my flexibility has decreased slightly for the past two weeks I've been trying it (while my soreness has, most certainly, shot through the roof, haha). I'm definitely still using it, as I can 100% tell the difference already in my leg strength, balance, and confident range of motion, but I was just curious if the slight dip in flexibility gains was a common and temporary side-effect of starting an Active Stretching Routine.

    • @MovementbyDavid
      @MovementbyDavid  9 месяцев назад +27

      Yes! 100% true! The active stretching actually incurs muscle growth which takes time to recover from. But once you are recovered the muscle is capable of stretching a bit further due to have more muscle cells. (Or sometimes longer cells on average)
      But the cool thing about it is that those flexibility gains don’t disappear as quickly!

    I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
    78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
    81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
    88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;
    and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
    99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
    102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75

    I am gonna give more scientific shit. Your muscle contraction started by two receptors nicotinergic(yes the one in cigs that effects this) and muscarinic 3. M3 also helps you to continue that movement while nicotinergic helps you to axelarate that movement. Which means you need more nicotinergic when you run short distances but more m3 when you walk long distances in a steady pace.
    Muscarinic receptors gets insensitivised(you need more acetylcholine to activate them) by being used while nicotinergic is absulutely opposite they get sensitivised(you need less acetylcholine to activate them) by being used(this is why aerobic sport is a good thing,too sensitive m3 and too insensitive nicotinergic receptors is a problem) also nicotinergic receptors potentiate m3 receptors and also inhibitates them in some ways(The mechanism is not fully understood).
    So theorically if you have really sensitive(too sensitive receptors gets insensitive really fast) or insensitive m3 which cause muscles to get stiff and stay in one place and not very sensitive nicotinergic receptors that can activate them it will cause various problems such as cramps, muscles stiffness, overactive bladder sendrome,anxiety, depression,asthma etc.
    We also have receptors that block those receptors and insensitivise them such as m2 (Main receptor to sleep and relax blocks nicotinergic receptors also m1 receptor which has the main job of releasing acetylcholine for other receptors to use) ,m4 (makes your muscles and arteries relax by blocking m3 receptors)
    Thats why using different training methods is important like aerobic(nicotinergic receptors and m2 receptor) and mucsle contraction-relaxation exercises(m3 receptor and m4 receptor),slow precise movements (m2 and m1).
    Also we already have that electrical stimulation designed in our body thats called vagus tonus. It regulates the sensitivity of your muscanirinic receptors so if you are really stiff have anxiety, depresion etc you can relieve it by doing vagus massages which will give short ach releases peridocally like short electrical stimulationt sensitivise muscarinic receptors and if you sensitivise it more than you need to you can use them to desensitise them.
    In short your body is complicated af get that ass moving.

    I hate that stretching actually helps with period cramps when all i wanna do is roll up into a tight ball. It's so counter intuitive, that stretching is the exact opposite of curling up and helps releaving the pain immediately.

    I'm really considering your programs. I've taken yoga classes and have tried stretching regularly before, but I am still the least flexible person that I know. I had a coach tell me I wasn't even trying, when I was at my stretching end range... Am I a stretching lost cause?
