Jerry Garcia’s musical ability is on full display here. His ear, his gift for phrasing and improvisation. Modality. All of it. Those who get it, get it. But he’s still arguably the most underappreciated guitarist of all time.
@Fred Jamison Listen to the “Rap” version of Fire on the Mountain. Can’t really conjure up any other examples but i’m sure if he was alive n well he’d be able to.
@Fred Jamison oh yeah definitely rap. And very much so with the type of rap thats very popular over the last 10ish years! Seriously, throw in a very subtle, kinda subdued jazz type riff while running it through a phaser pedal...Jerry would absolutely kill that.
Where you been? They do it quite frequently. Jerry Garcia was playing with Celia, Tito Puentes and Carlos Santa - all together playing on the same stage. Jerry Garcia played with Los Lobos. JERRY GARCIA is fluent in Spanish and his repertoire reflects that.
IJerry and Santana both seem to really be enjoying themselves. Jerry, looked healthy in this, really moving around the stage with a extra pep in his step.. Classic!!!!
@Burr Anderson I mean, there is SOME room for interpretation, I guess... but that first solo was definitely not typical Jerry in any meaningful sense, but that second one had “Classic Jerry” written all over it.
Jerry and Calos. Two old friends havin a ball! Jerry could not stop grinning. Carlos was lovin it. Just two buddies getting their MFn Groove on and lovin life. Beautiful!
what blows me away about these guys is that they never seem to run out of licks! Like if they kept jamming for 50 years straight, covering every genre in existence, every lick they both played would sound different and exciting. Absolutely amazing guitarists!
Yep. I was there. It was so cool. A “formal” dining room affair- tuxedos, smallish room with the stage about 2’ above the dance floor. I was 19 yrs old! My friend Eric and I saw it in the entertainment calendar that same day- we were so stoked! Without hesitation we headed to the biltmore. Here we are- tye dyes, blazing stoned and smiling, downtown LA. “Nope sorry”. No entry. A formal benefit, they said. Dude, we were SOOO out of place! We actually tried to charm our way in multiple times until they kind of ran us out. So we are dejected walking back to the van, I look up and see a door-”Service Entrance “ and...it was open! We stepped in and no shit straight away is the “service elevator “. I push the button. Machine noise and 5 seconds, door opens. In the elevator sits the Elevator Operator- a very small , old black man and he says, “boys want to go up to the party?”. Pinch me dude. Smiles and we go ”up”. Door opens into a darkly lit backstage. The elevator is gone. Must be dreaming... suddenly huge hands from a huge man wrap around us like we are toys- he says, “ enough games guys” and he pushes us through some curtains- “the” curtains of the dining room! Seriously. Now we are suddenly appeared as the MC is introducing the show. Stark. Tye dyes and smiling. Then the couple at that table invite us to duck our heads under their table! Seriously. We do. Smiling and blazing we wait for the music to begin. Amazing. We went from a sad walk to the van to being in the show in a matter of 1 minute and 40 seconds! We danced the night away! Everyone but us in tuxes. Jerry, my buddy, 2’ from me all night’! memorable. What a great night! Thanks Carlos, Jerry.....Steve Jordan!
The Dead were all fusion players, but none of them would admit it. Well maybe Bobby and Phil would. To be honest they probably have said something like that. What I'm trying to say is they probably wouldn't have gotten into Miles Davis's band, but they also wouldn't have auditioned lol
The accordion player is Esteban "Steve" Jordan (February 23, 1939 - August 13, 2010) was a jazz, rock, blues, conjunto and Tejano musician from the United States. He was also known as "El Parche", "The Jimi Hendrix of the accordion", and "the accordion wizard". An accomplished musician, he played 35 different instruments. He also was an actor in the talking heads film - True Stories . In the film he plays in a band with the character known as Radiohead. The band radiohead got their name from this song/movie . All Graceful instruments are known .
Jerry was so versatile, and I love how many different styles he would play. But I never thought I'd see him wailing away during a full-on Latin/Funk fusion jam. Thanks so much for sharing!
This is almost too Good to Believe. As if by Popular Request, you have the great Carlos Santana -(always Chili Pepper-Hot as Hell), the incredible Jerry Garcia (Bouncy-Bubbly & equally Hot, especially here, where he's really holding his Own with Carlos) & then Steve Jordan - the "Jimi Hendrix" of the Tex-Mex diatonic Acordeon ! Unbelievable ! What more can we ask for ? TYVM !
I cornered Garcia during rehearsal break. I blathered on about how much he meant to me. He was so awesome, patient and kind. Because I was dressed in a suit many of the other musicians approached to meet me. Weird. I loved Jerry Garcia and will always treasure that last encounter.
Jerry's exchange with Carlos and his expressions during that solo at 5:25 is priceless. For someone who saw Jerry many times, when he was healthy and expressive and when he wasn't... It's just nice to see him so into it and histrionic Thanks jerry and Carlos, truly my two favorite musicians
What an incredible show that must have been but those two guys being seen together probably it wasn't that rare because they both lived out in Marin County but then again Jerry stayed on the road 300 days out of the year But what I really like is this is a blues mix that RUclips pulled up so it's got Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughan scroll down to find Carlos Santana and that's kind of about it I don't know I haven't dug that far into it but what a wonderful show and I'm sure Jerry and Stevie are upstairs kicking it right now GG747 🚀 🎶 🌎
My town on my 28th b-day ; didn't make this show, but have seen both Jerry & Carlos quite a few times each? But this particular show must've been a treat !👁️👁️🌌☮️🤠👍
I was lucky enough to be at this show. The crowd was about 70% well-dressed Latinos and about 25% shaggy Deadheads. Everyone mixed just fine. Many of the Deadheads had weed and shared generously. It made for a very happy scene for the whole crowd. Garcia was just giddy playing with musicians he had never met or played with. Heck, despite his name, Garcia wasn't even really Latino. The Grateful Dead played Cal Expo two days later and I was fortunate to be there too. Jerry was reasonably happy, healthy, and in shape that year and it came through in the music.
My dad lived near cal expo in these cheap apartments and he saw a bunch of dead heads congregating and he followed them to that same 89 show. Pretty cool.
'89 Jer was the happiest I ever saw Jer. Everything was clicking for him musically, every show (dead or JGB) was absolute fire. I count myself lucky to have seen him back then.
I was also lucky enough to see them at Cal Expo that summer. Unfortunately, I was not aware that this gig was going down. So wish I could have been there!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "two master guitarists showing their chops, sweet tones, great closeups of Jerry." *** LoloYodel2 years ago-- "Man ! so cool to see Jer' at around 6:05 ... what a cut, with a little "Shakedown" swang to it too !!!"

You know everyone there was having a blast...off stage and ON. There’s just something about seeing two of your favorite, amazingly talented artists share a stage ...MAGIC !
so very Carlos to... having 2 of the greatest guitars going on stage together put an unknown front and center for a big part of the tune all about the love ... opening eyes to meet the unmet ... never about the ego a beautiful soul bringing beautiful soul music
Whowzaaaaaa, YES !! This rocks. Jerry takes his first solo at 2:30 makin' those hispanic girls jive !! and again at 5:10 !! So happy to see good 'ol Jerry smiling and so into this Latin swaaannngggg !
Two of my top 5 favorite, and most influential to me, guitarists of all time righ here, dude. The way they rock those riffs and patterns throughout the improv...mmm..that's how jam right there. I always explain it to myself like, "Play your solo in sections." Like: 1st part) Find a little riff with subdued sound and do some improv around it 2nd) Different riff with improv full on 3rd) riff a little bit 3/4 of the time signature, then get a little bit wild That's how I learned to solo/jam from these two in particular. There's several guitarists out there that are masters, but these two master the art of a groovin jam session.
What is cool about this is 95% of the people had no idea who Garcia was and he knew that, it comes to the Music that is being played and not by who it is played by just as long as you smile and it moves you. Look at the fun these cat's are having.PEACE.LEGALIZE CANNIBIS NOW
I wasn't expecting much after hearing Carlos taking the solo action by storm, but then Jerry came in and blew everyone away. It wasn't quite as clean, but it was radical and had that Jerry psychedelia. He did have a way of drowning everyone out with that commanding melody that brings you to a higher place and then totally melts your face completely.
No doubt talk about a couple of big hitters! That just goes to show you how versatile Jerry was. I absolutely love seeing collaborations like that. It's every bit of the reason why I became a musician. Fare thee well Jerry.
Garcia really comes to life here; it's a totally different style of playing than what he did with the Dead. Makes me wish he had spent a little more time playing outside the Dead and Garcia bands...
Despite the undermiked, inexplicable squeeze boxer in the middle, this clip shows two master guitarists showing their chops, sweet tones, great closeups of Jer

Because of his ability to play different styles and genres and blend them, have to say that Jerry is the best overall guitarist.
Jerry Garcia could play in any musical setting.

Imagine going to see Santana play and out walks Jerry
You're in the Band! Unless you have another gig.
I wish. Seen Santana 3 times but I was born too late for Jerry.
Would be a dream!
I was at a dead show in Mile High....... and Carlos walks out. 🤯

Good lord!!!!! @1:30 Santana's guitar solo was FUNKY AND FEROCIOUS!! Right after that, Jerry brought in some heavy tone too!
Jerry was playing Carlos's game with his first solo but he decided to do his thing with the second solo.
@Burr Anderson I mean, there is SOME room for interpretation, I guess... but that first solo was definitely not typical Jerry in any meaningful sense, but that second one had “Classic Jerry” written all over it.
Jerry doesn't like confrontation but if he wanted to, he could lay down something fresh and fly
