@neilcockbain6234 This is very true. About 14 years ago I was at the top of Stake Pass in Great Langdale. An F-15 suddenly appeared upside down and we waived to each other. The F-15 then did a barrel roll as they disappeared down Langstrath. I can't believe it slipped my mind. 😃❤️😃
over COVID I got addicted to Time Team videos on RUclips which was on the BBC for 20 years. A team of specialists dug deep to uncover as much as they could in three days about a U.K. site's archaeology and history. I found in fascinating.

Really enjoyed your Roman Empire video. Being a Brit and passionate about all things Roman Empire it was really nice to get an outsiders viewpoint on this part of world history. I thought your insight into the Roman World gave me a fresh perspective. It was like looking at these ruins for the first time again and your enthusiasm was quite contagious. Also enjoyed your experience of driving on the correct side of the roads here in England!!!! Please come back to the UK and take a look at the many more fantastic sites built by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago. I live in Bath and the Roman Baths are well worth a visit.
I can’t believe you visited the Lake District!! I went to university in Lancaster which is about 20mins away and grew up about just over an hour away. I’m glad you got to experience the green and pleasant lands that the north of England has to offer

There's ruins of an old Roman Amphitheatre near where I live. Every so often, I'll take a walk there a visit the site. They also have a Roman Museum and remains of old Roman barracks and baths. I've always appreciated having something like that on my doorstep. Great video, love stuff like this!

I never thought that I would say this but you as an American have taught me something about the historical England and more specifically about historical Cumbria which is my home county and the best of it is I never knew about the Roman fort at Hard Knot and can honestly say in my 60 odd years I’ve never heard of it been mentioned. So thank you.😊😊
I'm a WWII history nerd and it's my most knowledgeable, but history of the ancient world is fascinating to me. Especially the Greeks, but the Egyptians and the Romans too. So much was done so long ago it's amazing to me. But the most fascinating is the history of England. The Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Norse, the Normans... it's seen so much conflict and history and still went on to be the largest Empire of the world. It's former colonies are major world leaders and it's language is spoken all over the world. Just an incredible and long history.
I did a 65km run in that area a few years ago and happened across the Hardnott fort without knowing it was there. Blew me away. The scenery there, as you say, is stunning. Special part of the world. Really enjoyed your commentary - I’d like to go back to visit it instead of just running past it ! Many thanks for the video (and all the others !). 😊🙏

Welcome to Britannia! I haven't been to Hardknot Fort since I was a kid and I'm now in my 60's, so many thanks for that. Next to the fort is a decent stretch of level ground which the Romans used for parade and exercise. All the best and really looking forward to more of these clips.
I watched this and thought hardknot pass I haven’t been there since I was a kid and know I’m in my sixties. When I was there with the school we were below in the ramblers hostel and one evening we came up on the parade where I belted at orders at the direction of my teacher to demonstrate the acoustics . Lefter think of it but doubt if I will return . Beautiful place glad that was mentioned . ( and you could climb the cliff face )

There was a rock face out back of hostel which we used to climb and one evening whilst roped up etc we were over taken by locals with guns and dogs chasing foxes hardy bunch them lads 🫣

Thank thank you thank you !! we were on this same road back in 2000 BUT we missed going to Hardknott by "this much" - it was a dull day - our car struggled up some of the hills and there was a car rally of vintage cars driving in the opposite direction - I lost the plot - turned around and went back the way we came - so I missed Hardknott - to my ever lasting regret... your video was much appreciated.- I'm a Hadrian's Wall obsessive - so we did visit it in the Summer and a second time a few weeks before Christmas - I will never forget it. I've always been fascinated with the "edge of empire" sites when it comes to Rome's garrisons in northern England and North Africa....thanks for the video since I know I'll never get to walk them in person.
Great video. I’m biased brother but further north east is where the best preserved Roman forts are . We have unbelievable castles , like warkworh and Bamburgh castle are brilliant . Segedunum in wallsend , start of the Roman wall. It has a replica bathhouse . Vindolanda and housestead forts are truly brilliant . The views are tremendous. They have some of the best Roman artefacts you will ever see.

Once you start looking at the Romans and their Empire it becomes an obsession. The Romans were stupendous organisers, and militarily brilliant, even Napoleon and Hitler copied their salutes, style, Icons etc. I live north of Hadrian's Wall and even the roads round here follow the straight lines of the Roman Roads. The Roman Empire is all around us here.
Thanks JD. Breathtaking. I do wonder if a 23 year old Roman Soldier would find enough "diversion" from their daily tasks in such a remote area. The current climate (and the green tableau) suggest that Gortex rain gear would have been prized. 😊
The local sheep breed is the Herdwick (aka Herdy's). You can tell which are this year's lambs as they are born with black fleeces. As they age, they turn grey. The Herdy's you saw at Hardknott were Mama and her two lambs. Allegedly, the Herdwick breed was brought to the Lake District by the Vikings from Norway. 😊❤😊

Was able to see Hadrians Wall when I was over there , also the Saalburg in the Taunus mountains a little north of Frankfurt Germany is a really cool complete Roman fort from like 100ad was super cool. Love your videos, especially the WW2 ones. I am from northern England (Kingston Upon Hull), and i have to recommend a visit to "Eden Camp" near Malton North Yorkshire. Lots of great WW2 stuff there.
Kingston Upon Hull and North don’t belong in the same sentence as KUH is in the n; Midlands you sound like most people who don’t know any of the country other than there’s London and anywhere above there is northern England and then below London is south England.

13:57 wait til winter comes....you'll soon change your mind! I used to work in Windermere and had to drive over Hardknot pass at least twice a week. In the winter it was a huge diversion on the main roads to Keswick and down the coast road.
11:40 You’re right. I’m a Geordie, and I’m from the area you are visiting. And I agree, we drive on the wrong side of the road. I drive frequently in continental Europe and the USA, and the steering wheel on the left is much more Natural. (And all my local friends, as well as most Brits disagree!)

JD. I can understand your frustrations. For five years, I was stationed in Okinawa. I came so close to running over pedestrians and hitting other vehicles.
As a native to the country who is very familiar to those roads I can only say well done for managing the roads in the lake district, specially the route up to the HardKnott Fort

I walked parts of Hadrian's Wall and the Roman forts the other side of the country in the Northumberland area and again that is unbelievably beautiful. I live in the South East of England where the scenery isn't as dramatic but there are great Roman ruins where I live, in fact I live in area of the first Roman capital of Roman Britain. Safe travels, looking forward to the next episode.

There is a Roman fort in Pevensey East Sussex the walls are 30 foot high, built 1732 years ago.

Great video , love the ancient Roman history . Was able to see Hadrians Wall when I was over there , also the Saalburg in the Taunus mountains a little north of Frankfurt Germany is a really cool complete Roman fort from like 100ad was super cool. Look forward to more ancient history as well as everything else you do ! 😁

Love your videos, especially the WW2 ones. I am from northern England (Kingston Upon Hull), and i have to recommend a visit to "Eden Camp" near Malton North Yorkshire. Lots of great WW2 stuff there.
Kingston Upon Hull and North don’t belong in the same sentence as KUH is in the n; Midlands you sound like most people who don’t know any of the country other than there’s London and anywhere above there is northern England and then below London is south England.

@@DmG2007 The real 'north' begins at the River Tees. Signs on the A1 road point "to the north" all the way from London, but none to be seen after crossing that river . . .

I used to work in Windermere and had to drive over Hardknot pass at least twice a week.
In the winter it was a huge diversion on the main roads to Keswick and down the coast road.

JD. I can understand your frustrations. For five years, I was stationed in Okinawa. I came so close to running over pedestrians and hitting other vehicles.
As a native to the country who is very familiar to those roads I can only say well done for managing the roads in the lake district, specially the route up to the HardKnott Fort

I walked parts of Hadrian's Wall and the Roman forts the other side of the country in the Northumberland area and again that is unbelievably beautiful. I live in the South East of England where the scenery isn't as dramatic but there are great Roman ruins where I live, in fact I live in area of the first Roman capital of Roman Britain. Safe travels, looking forward to the next episode.

Been to Ireland, beautiful, unlike anything I have ever seen. The driving is a bear, narrow roads, sheep and left side driving.
