The last monarch that went against parliament was beheaded. Whilst technically she has power, any attempt to use it would be the end of the monarchy, unless she had massive public support. Most of the European monarchies are gone because they didn't move with the times, ours did. A constitutional monarchy is symbolic and ceremonial only, but at times of national disaster it's the monarchy who steps up and that's why they're loved and trusted so much...

@Sky Sky The law is applied in the monarch name, they are the Queen's Courts, just like QCs are Queen Councils. That does not mean she is above the law just that the courts operate in her name. You are playing with definitive technicalities. Legally speaking we are all subjects of the UK corporation and the monarchy is an archaic throwback to medieval times. In reality every courtroom is a registered company, every police force is a registered company, every individual is a register company, every aspect of life we live is through contractual obligation through statute law and precidant amendment in contract form. The Queen is just a figure head, and that too is an oversimplification!
When you apply for a driving license you are agreeing to the terms & conditions applied to that driving license, and you specifically agree to them. You aren't bound by law under the Queen, that ended long ago, you are bound to a contract with the nations government under the terms of statute and precidant law.
What do you think licenses, permits, employment contracts etc are? They are you consenting to abide by the terms of an agreement. That is what you are held to under the law!

@@hindoostan5593 Your example is a 45 year old constitutional crisis? In a breakdown of the system being able to force new elections is hardly a tyrannical act is it? If government can't or won't govern but refuses to acknowledge that, surely you would want to have arbitration capable of preventing prolonged deadlock?
It's hardly used regularly if your pointing at a case 45 years ago...
Look at the way America deadlocks regularly and there is nothing you can do. So they suffer governmental shutdowns instead whilst they argue. Without a clear majority government, you can't govern. That's why we have a first past the post system which prevents hung government most of the time.
It's also why in such a system it is imperative any subsequent government MUST be impowered to reverse anything a previous government enacted... Nothing is irreversible or closed to government reconsideration. Another reason the EU had to go!

@@chriscollins550 That is total nonsense: the monarch has no power to raise taxes at all. This was one reason why it all kicked off with Charles I. He tried to rule without Parliament and found he could not raise funds in its absence. That is one reason he was forced to take to arms, his followers being responsible to take care of troops they raised, not him. On the other hand, Parliament could raise taxes and used that power to create and pay the New Model Army, the forerunner of the present Army. Historically, the Army owes its first loyalty to Parliament and Parliamentary government, not the monarch. It is true that Royalists have essentially corrupted this in subsequent centuries by appending “Royal” to he names of regiments wherever possible, but this is purely window-dressing. The 2nd Regiment of Foot, for example, was known as the “Queen's”, or West Surreys, but the Queen in question was not even one of ours! Now, through amalgamation, they form part of the Royal Fusiliers, but that is very recent indeed. All this can be undone in a moment by the Ministry of Defence, if required.

When he talked about maritime rights, that is managed by the Crown estates. Our system is very complex, we have no written constitution, as its an ongoing system, not the views of a group of people who held power, at a point in time. In Parliament there are two Houses the Commons (elected) and the Lords, appointed. It is a complex state that works well, we did have King George III who went mad, during the USA independence, so it can have consequences. Happy being a subject. Does she have all these powers? Yes, she does. There is a reason why the British public have a very sharp eye on the Royals to ensure that they are sticking to the book.
As for Elizabeth II, her service and sense of duty is unrivalled within the pool of world leaders today. Her self-restraint has earned the respect of the public, also.
When we sometimes hear people ask: "but why doesn't the Queen use her powers to benefit her family and their private endeavours?", well that would be an abuse of the Crown.
In essence though, the benefit from this is that elected officials (ministers) are sandwiched between both the people and the monarch to ensure that they do their job right. Our structure in the UK is designed in a way that it would be impossible for a dictatorship to ever take control of the country.

The crucial word here is “theoretical”, in practical terms her powers are of “influence”, through the Government (formally known as Her Majesty’s Government), generally the actual holder of real (but not limitless) power is the Prime Minister, who acts rather like the “managing director” of Her Majesty’s Government. Reference was made to the weekly meeting she holds with whoever is currently her Prime Minister; pre-Covid the PM would visit the Queen every week for an “audience”, wherever she happens to be when she is in the UK (either in London at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, or at one of her other residences, for example Sandringham or Balmoral), what they discuss is totally private and is generally believed to involve them discussing current matters of importance and perhaps offering counsel/advice to the PM. Her real power in most circumstances is quite limited and can only be exercised through the Government. I generally support the monarchy, but not blindly, and if she ever tried to act wilfully and unilaterally we’d soon get rid of her. However, she is respected as being ‘above politics’ and as a symbol of the nation, politics nowadays is for politicians in Parliament and the government of the day, usually from one of the two main political parties, occasionally a Coalition. It wasn’t always like this of course - one ‘absolute monarch’ lost his head to settle this issue some hundreds of years ago and we were for a brief period a republic/commonwealth until the monarchy was restored, but with severely curtailed real power, but still the symbolic holder of power. It’s a balance that is nuanced over time. The Queen is only Queen because her father unexpectedly became King when his brother was forced to stand aside (“abdicate”) when the person he wished to marry was not acceptable to the government. The Queen knows the rules and whoever follows her, presumably Charles her son, will have to observe these rules too - it’s a delicate unwritten balance.

Interesting timing, reacting to this video. As said, the Queen keeps her opinions to herself, especially her political ones, which sums up why the USA and the UK see Meghan and Harry in such different lights. To America, it is normal to have folks "in power", whatever the nature of that power might be, state their political position but one of the real keys to how the monarchy retains support here is by keeping its opinions well and truly to itself and instead it "serves the country, its population, and its current government", whatever colour that current government might be.

A lot of people know very little about Royal Prerogative and the powers of Her Majesty.
In usual Simon style, he left out several points. The UK does not have a constitution, there has not been a document outlining the roles of parliament and the British Crown since the Magna Carta was written in 1215. There is no modern document limiting Her powers anymore than they did for Henry VIII.
Her role in government for Commonwealth nations also is strong. For instance, here in Canada, Her Majesty is the Head of State and the Crown is represented by our Governor General, who is appointed by Her Majesty with guidance from our Prime Minister. The GG is not allowed to practice or exhibit any political alignments as their 5 year role is solely to represent the Monarch, who is politically neutral. The duties of the GG include opening Parliament, swearing in Prime Ministers, Chief Justices and cabinet ministers, and must ensure that there is always a government in place. Her Majesty is also the Commander In Chief of the Royal Canadian Armed Forces and as such holds the power of full command. When new Canadians are sworn in for their citizenship, they promise to follow and respect the laws and Canada and pledge their allegiance to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, as the Queen of Canada.
Her powers differ in different Commonwealth nations, depending on their constitutions, Her powers in Canada were the same as they were in the UK until our constitution was signed in 1982, before that we were a Dominion. Royals, especially those in the line of succession, are trained from childhood for this role. They are raised to understand the implications of their decision making and their obligations, both socially and spiritually to their subjects. I think if people took the time to learn more about the conditions of life as a Royal there would be less fairytale fantasy at the idea and understand the tightrope they have to walk…their life of privilege and opulence is a gilded cage in many respects, one that helps many nations in the world, like mine, avoid tyranny in governance.
Despite the fact that they could do a better job of keeping the extended family in line and could stand to be a tad more accepting and open to modern change I think that a fancy life in exchange for an entire lifetime devoted to service is a pretty fair trade…not everyone feels that way, but I do.

Britain isn't a democracy as such, it's a constitutional monarchy. However because the constitution is unwritten it makes things a little complicated. The Queen technically has the powers listed, and many more besides but actions cause consequences. The British people are used to living in a free and fair (for the most part) parliamentary democracy and most people know the difference between a constitutional monarch and an absolute monarch. So if the Queen chose to rule like an absolute monarch she could but the very least consequence would be a revolution or civil war, either of which would most likely destroy not only her reign but the future of the entire monarchy. A monarchy which she has sworn to uphold and a country to which she has sworn to act in the best interests of.

To address your misconception around her power, since she abstains from flexing even a slight fraction of her power on account of maintaining her position (the Monarchy has been fragile for centuries) it's often said her role is largely ceremonial at this point. The fact that she still holds these powers and doesn't wield them lends testament to how she regards the state of our nation. If things grew dire enough that she was required to act I'm certain she would but ultimately in order to respect democracy it's largely in her best interest to 'guide the ship' with the subtlest of touches. She's kind of our global representative and sets the standard for how our nation is perceived around the world imo. I'm grateful for the quiet voice of experience she whispers in the relevant ears to represent the nations best interests.

The joys of an unwritten constitution, everything is governed by law, precedent and tradition. Ultimate power is vested in the monarch, as he said she is head of the Armed Force and Church of England. The Government, which ever party is in power, governs in her name, ie Her Majesty's Government but she also guarantees opposition to that Government as it is Her Majesty's Official Opposition. She has a weekly meetings with her Prime Minister which is private, nobody know what is said in those meetings, and has daily red boxes sent to her from the government with documents that need signing and keeps her up to date with all current situations.
All justice in UK is carried out in her name, all criminal case are Regina (The Crown) vs The Defendant. The oath Judges swear is:
“I will well and truly serve our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth the Second, in the office of Justice of the Peace/Judge, and I will do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of the realm without fear or favour, affectation or ill-will” This means that justice is independent of influence from the government or other powerful lobbies, as seen in 2019 when the Supreme Court found a decision to prorogue / suspend Parliament too early for a General Election by the Government, was found to be illegal, this decision was against the Governments wishes but still Parliament reconvened and continued its business until it was legally prorogued for the General election 5 weeks later.
In short ultimate power is held by the monarch who serves the UK and has no need or wish to wield it for themselves or any part of society, but keeps those powers away from ambitious politicians or others who may wish or want to use them for their own benefit or a political part's benefit. The other thing to remember is that this system has developed over the centuries and for the most part works and is flexible enough to cope with all situations up to the present day.

I understand there are specific scenarios where diplomats need protecting but it definitely should depend on what it is and shouldn't extend to family members who mow down and kill a young lad. If it was a UK diplomat's wife who did this in America and returned to the UK I'm sure the US wouldn't be so passive about it.

Her power is a double edged sword.
She has almost ultimate power as she is the head of state ( this includes for some other countries) but if she uses it the people will get rid of her for having so much power.
This is where the point of not using it or using it in ways people can't see comes in.

I'm a British Lawyer and can clarify your answer questions : The Queen has all power in the UK and several countries.
    1. She can declare War and as the entire British Armed Forces and Police swear loyalty to her and not the British Government.
    2. She can stop all MP's and Governments from forming or sitting in a total of 54 countries around the world whereby they are subject to the laws of the Privvy Council.
    3. The Queen can block any laws from either being formed, or if disagrees with a Bill (the name for a proposed law before Parliament votes it to become one), from being discussed. She has used this power on 40 occasions in her reign.
    4. The Queen owns 100% of the entire United Kingdom and any overseas territory or Colony. For example, If you purchase a field and you discovered it was sitting on a block of gold 50 metres underground measuring 300mt X 300m X 300m, it officially belongs to the Crown (the technical term for the Monarch, although she allows the government to use or benefit from it "in name in her name".
    5. Everyone who breaks the law does so against the Queen and the Courts always try a person in her name, i.e. Regina (Latin for Queen) Vs Accused (in the US you get tried "United States/State Vs Person on trial).
    6. The Queen can open and can close Parliament. This means she allows it to sit and discuss new laws, amendments to old ones, or wiping old laws off the Statute (Latin for laws) books.
    7. The Queen has the power to fire everyone in the House of Commons and hold an election.
    8. The Queen can sack a Prime Minister, hire a new one by "appointing" them. She has used this power in a subtle way twice, the first time was in 1955, to suggest to Winston Churchill that he was to ill to remain in Office. The second was in 1974 and that was when the country was suffering mass labour disputes and the government lost it majority in Parliament, therefore unable to pass the laws it wanted. She told Edward Heath, The Prime Minister at the time that he had lost her confidence. That's "Queens speak" for I think you should step aside before I fire you. The next day, The Prime Minister resigned.
    9. The Queen technically owned all the Oil found when it was first discovered around the coast of the UK in the 1970's. This was worth $2.56 Trillion in 2020 value. The UK state collected over $680bn in taxes from its oil and gas sector since 1970.
    10. The Queen has the power to appoint Lords, who can then sit in Parliament, the upper house in Britain's legislative system. She doesn't personally decide that Today "I shall make "X" a Lord", she's given a list on names to approve, although she can exercise the power if she wanted to.
    11. If you look at other countries, the Queen as Head of State of Australia fired the Prime Minister because he couldn't get a budget secured and the government shut down (like the US Federal shut down you frequently have in the US). She appointed a replacement Prime Minister who then got the Bill passed to fund the government, three hours later, she then dissolved Parliament and ordered new Elections letting the people pass judgement on the MP's, the former government and Ministers. The people elected a new Parliament, where over 50% of the MP's were new. This means the people took a dim view on the actions of those MP's who caused the shut down and didn't re-elect them. Imagine that happening in the US everyone there's a Federal shut down, the voters could take the ultimate revenge and not re-elect those who caused all those people who work for the government not to get paid. Australia hasn't had a repeat shutdown since the action taken shut down in 1977.
    12. The Queen is Head of State and has the same powers in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu, as well as Australia and the UK.
    13. As Head of the Church of England, which is the head Protestant Church, to which other Churches around the world follow. This is a lot of people and you will be surprised to hear that is 800 million to 1 billion adherents worldwide or about 37% of all Christians. majority of Protestants[g] are members of a handful of Protestant denominational families: Adventists, Anabaptists, Baptists, Calvinist/Reformed,[h] Lutherans, Methodists, and Pentecostals.[10] Nondenominational, Charismatic, Evangelical, Independent, and other churches are on the rise, and constitute a significant part of Protestantism from the Church of England and its leader, the Queen.
She has over 140 powers and many more rights than I care to type on here.

  • @-TomH
    @-TomH 3 года назад +9

This may be long but as a british citizen I'll give you an idea......
1:racism,, is it illegal for a family member to ask if the child will be of colour? Meghan has completely taken this out of context😂. Shes not even African I'm british and I thought she was white or latino😂😂😂😂. Meghan being american does not realise the magnitude of this statement when the queen is head of state in 13 African countries!! And india etc, all of which are of colour!!! Bringing out a race card and NOT saying who it was is wrong and branding a whole family and not 1 individual. She's bang out of order. But i would say Britain is no where near racist as USA!!! Even news reporters here were shocked she made that claim! Racism is a big NONO in UK and you WILL get beat up for it there's no debate lol. Even your friends will turn against you for being racist here. Nothing like USA.
2: suicidal: this is the major 1 BUT let's break it down..... she was in such a privileged position how could she not get help? Buckingham palace has it's own hospital and doctors inside, also why did she not turn to her husband for support? After all he's head of 10 charities in UK for mental health😂👍🏼. 3rd at the time she claims this happened she was under a doctor for her pregnancy, why not raise the issues with him/her? She had so many options. But instead ignored all those and went to HR within the palace so later on...... NOW her story would be more believable to American's who had no idea how the royal institution works. She definitely had the support lol.
3rd; kate made her cry..... I can agree with this as being true because meghan is weak. British dont express thereselfs like American's do, it's just a crack on mentality here...... but the reason she cried is because she demanded to kate that Kate's children not wear tights for her wedding..... now by LAW everyone within the royal family has to wear tights young and old if they wear a dress. So kate said no!! Meghan was trying to dictate to kate who's children are future kings and queens😂😂😂. This would never happen. Also coming from Meghan who promotes a voice is very dictating to basically try and force someone else's children to do something she wants. I would say this is where Americans dont understand that if they want something it dont always happen she learnt that and cried.
4th: her son not having a title, now this one is dumb and Meghan did not do her research 😂👍🏼. King george V over 200 years ago created a law that if future children was not in the lineage to the throne they would not get a title.... for example the queen has 9 great grandchildren but only 3 have titles, that's Williams and Kate's children because William's child is 3rd in line!!! Archie is 8th so he would have to live 700 years to become a king presuming Williams children never have children he will be pushed down every 1 child they have. Hence why the law was created.... no point having a prince if 12th in line and have to live 1100 years😂😂😂😂. She's just very very very jealous and its showing she has 0 respect for a 94 year old lady and the british have completely turned against her for this! Least to say a day before it aired the queens husband prince Philip 99 years old had a heart operation!! Hes been in hospital 22 days. She is just a toxic women who thinks she can change a 2000 year old institution. She will get killed.
As for the video! Great reaction although she has power she will NEVER wield it because the british public would burn down Buckingham palace and overthrow the monarchy. In simple terms she has ultimate power but will never use it. She delegates her power to the priminister to pass stuff she wants so they take her backlash. Bit like any country lol. Ultimately there's always 1 person in charge.

Firstly this is not the subject of the video. Secondly you are talking about things that you really don't know much about - pretty much everything that happened was either behind closed doors or attacks in the press. As for why she did did not ask for support, she did ask for suppot and was denied it as it would effect how the royal family was seen. As far as I can see your comment is nothing but a charecter assasination of a person you really know very little about. I don't know what possible motivation you have for this is but it is not only rude but also highly disrespectful.

She was propped up by billions tax payers money living high life but could not get help? Including her own money? Your talking stupid.

I love the history this monarchy has and how it has evolved. I probably wouldn't like her power so much if she actually used it and abused it.
