- Continuing my mission to backlight everything and anything! xD This time it's an original Nintendo DMG GameBoy being retrofitted with a modern backlight kit. These kits have been around for a while so I decided to give them a shot. The results are very impressive!!
This video is more of an overview to give an idea of the process involved. It is not intended as a tutorial, instructional or a how-to video. The individual sellers of these kits will no doubt provide you with instructions specific to their kits. The one I'm using is the V4 kit which uses 4 LEDs and requires only 2 wires to be soldered. If you search ebay for DMG Backlight Kit I'm sure you'll find several auctions for the parts you'll need.
Thanks for watching! Игры
Honestly, I absolutely love your videos/accent. Very informative and never off topic with amazing results.
Great job! Keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks for the nice comment. I haven't noticed any real difference in battery life. The LEDs don't draw much power so they probably aren't worth worrying about.
There's something really satisfying about playing old games on the original hardware :) . People will mock retro stuff until you bust out something like an original DMG. Suddenly they're desperate for a shot :P
Super guide buddy, I really enjoyed watching that. Very clear instructions & as ever, you make it look so simple.
It certainly makes quite a positive impact on these.
Your videos are very interesting to watch. I like to buy broken systems off ebay too. Recently bought i couple of PSP's, that i've fixed up (mostly cosmetic damage to housing etc), one of which I actually use myself. Keep your videos coming!
Great job mate big inprovment over the standard screen.
It works really well. I definitely recommend giving it go.
Those Afterburner kits were actually front-light mods. Front-lit LCDs work in a different way and have a tendency to cause colours to appear washed out.
It adds a lot of functionality to the system. You can actually play it in the dark now! :) I wish Nintendo had shipped them like this.
get video martin!! keep up your tutorials! you do a great job explaining 'em!!
Such a cool mod. I bought a Gameboy light really for collecting purposes. I might have to try and backlight a Gameboy pocket though it looks really nice.
Please never stop making videos.
I gave my honest thoughts in the video. And it'll only show up dust if you don't remove any while installing.
I remember that video of yours, Ill just have to dig though the mountain of broken ds screens i have LOL thank you
It would have been nice to have one of these back in the day.
your videos are just so good!
you can solder to the 2 points dirrectly below the ribbon cable at the bottom
I contacted the manufacturer of the one I found which looks like yours and it designed to work with regulated +5 VDC Thanks.
Definitely worth doing if you prefer to play on the original hardware.
I remember plugging in a tiny angler fish lamp into my game boy so I could play Super Mario Land 2 at night! Good times! I need to get myself a gameboy! Because after I watched this video I found my old gameboy games! haha
Awesome mod man! Kinda sad when I heard that you cannot do a backlight mod on the NeoGeo Pocket Color, guess I will have to go back to using a flashlight D:
Thank you for letting me know. This video was awesome by the way. New sub. for sure.
i don't know too much about electronics but there are any other two points to solder the cables?
i've already done one DMG with this method but those two soldering points are annoying.
thanks for the reply i just rewatched the vid does the screen look faded like it does in the vid or in person is ther more contrast?
and what would you say is the best color back lit screen? are other colors better suited?
thanks
I tried this mod after watching you video. I messed up though. After peeling the back reflective piece off I had a sticky residue remaining on the back on the screen. Is that normal or did I not peel it correctly? I also put too much stress on the LCD and one I installed the actual back-light the LCD had pixels missing. Not sure if its beyond repair now. Not as easy as it looks!
Congratulations man.. they look absolutely amazing with the backlit screens :) I imagine they look even nicer up close! Do they consume more juice now though?
the game image looks a little washed out and faded when lighted is that how it looks in person?
what does dmg stand for? dot matrix game?
nice work mate. i could have done with this back in the day.. got the gb near release and often id be playing it in the back of the car on the way to visit family friends, trying to tilt it so i could use the street lights to see.. then later upgrading to the magnifier / light clip on.. lol
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
I highly doubt this is possible but, if you bought the backlight for the GameBoy original, and scraped off the back of it, could it be used as a frontlight?
Hi i cant find these backlight kits on ebay? What are they called?
I've read about it but I think it's really only for people who want to use the DMG for music production.
Could I do something like this with the original GameBoy Advance? I like the way the original feels in my hands, but there is no version of it with a light built in.
Rocking those poundland double a's lolzor :)
Now I want to play Super Mario. I guess it's a small thing in terms of consumption, but do you have any idea about the impact of the backlit module over the battery life?
You have a great channel, I am glad I stumbled upon it some months ago.
I also should of asked if its possible to use a gameboy pocket screen as a replacement.
Great video as always. But it's bugging the hell out of me, what music have you used in this video? I recognise it but can't place it.
They're fine, no need for pots/resistors etc. The camera's white balance goes a little crazy trying to adjust to filming a bright screen in a dark room, that's all. In real life they look beautiful XD. You also have full contrast control should you need it. I uploaded a nice example photo up on my twitter the other day if you want to get a better idea of how these mods look in real life.
Hi! Great video! Thanks... but I need to ask... where do you buy these kit? On Ebay? Just put DMG Backlight kit? And you know if I can do this on a GB Pocket version?
Did you ever think about doing an overclocking mod on your gameboy? I looked at a tutorial and it seems quite simple; just desolder the crystal and install a socket and switch.
Wow looks nice!
You can get the backlight on NonFinite! And also KitschBent or what ever its called!
unles youbought a mini voltage regulator those little ones for get what there called but i have one used with my raspberry pi portable then you could just go straight from the batterys
There's no other logical explanation, got to be magic! xD
Would you be able to use one of the late model, backlit SPs to replace an original GBA or even GBC screen for the backlight?
Well this next on the list once I'm modding my gbc.
Could you do a front light mod tutorial for GB Colo(u)r, please? I've seen only one other on youtube and I'd love to see how you would do it. It'd really help me out!
I can only find those kits there you remove the led. And put a resistor insted
I need to know what music you used in this video. It sounds epic.
Hi, nice vid! I want to make this mod, but have one doubt. The original screen is super when playing outside, even better with direct sunlight, will I lose this funktion if I switch to backlight screen? (I hade many DS and PSP consoles and they are unplayeble in direct sunlight...)
I wonder if this could be done with the gba 001
I haven't tested it but I would imagine it is between 4-5V
Is it possible to do a backlight mod on the Neogeo pocket?
My original purple GBA came with an 'afterburner' backlight mod which made it look like this.
If only you could mod the gameboy to have a less smeary LCD panel.
the day after you made this video, I bought a gameboy on amazon for $25 worth $85 to me.
I highly doubt it, the pocket screen is very different. Check out the gameboy repair video on this channel, it might be able to help.
whats your honest thoughts on a original gameboy with backlight? do you get good contrast or is it washed out? also does it show up all the dust etc?
would you recomend it or not?
Sweet ! Back lighting really saves the eyes.thanks for the share. :)
Hey bud. Can you tell me the voltage that's applied to this little guy? I would like to to install it into into a Turbo Express to replace its dead lamp.
Thanks, I thought so too :)
Thank you very much! =)
I own a DMG Gameboy with a bad screen. Do you know of any LCD screen mods for the system or am I out of luck and should just buy another gameboy with a good screen.
does it effect the battery life very much?
god work RetroGameTech
Cool, happy to help :)
Haha Sonic 3D Blast 5 makes an appearance once again :)
Nice vid, is this harder to do on the Pocket?
awesome then, I've always wanted to backlit my dmg gameboy !
Have you ever considered putting a GBA or GBA SP into the shell of one of the old game boys? Not that it would be practical, of course. It would be a fun little project to some people.
you're back
woot
How much does it affects the battery life?
Good job .
Great Vid
How did you get sonic on the original gameboy?
where did you get the clear gameboy shells?
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge :)
would this work on a wonderswan mono?
You can't backlight those. You're only option is to front-light mod it or replace and rewire the screen with one from an AGS-101.
hi do you do these for customers? i would like this done to my gameboy can you pm me?
im in uk
Since when did Sonic come out on the Gameboy? Im sure Sega and Nintendo were huge rivals at the time?
Dot Matrix Gameboy :) Sorry for the slow response! lol
I think it's much the same tbh. Shouldn't be too difficult :)
Do you have a specific link for this backlight?
Nice mod!!! Looks too tricky for me, better seek out someone with good fine motor skills for pulling off that film!!
I was wondering the Same thing. WHERE THE HELL DID THAT SONIC GAME AT 10:28 come from!! Someone must know!
Oh I see. I got mine from some slightly dodgy website that sold them pre-installed.
Either way, it made the original GBA actually playable instead of a dark piece of crap :)
nice!
Thanks :)
Alas, the original GBA cannot be modded to be backlit. You can, however, swap out its screen for a GBA SP AGS-101 screen to have a backlit original GBA.
I did a video about it not too long ago. It's a bootleg game.
I've not noticed any negative effect. Still running on the same batteries seen in this vid :)
What's dmg
I've got issues! :P
Nintendo sold them like that :)
Shame it doesn't appear big enough for a game gear screen
fuck the OG gameboy the pocket was awesome it had a slightly bigger screen i loved it and even tho they took smaller batteries i couldve sworn they lasted longer than any other GB
anyway i liked it more at times than the GBC and thats quite something to say when the GBC was color and not b&w.. i always wished to have the backlight one but their a bit more rare
Certainly beats strapping a clumsy light to the system
I'd rather desolder the cables, less of a danger to destroy such a nostalgic thing.
here are you irish ????
