- Here's a quick overview of what can be involved when buying, refurbishing and repairing faulty junk from ebay. In this video I have a go at reviving an original DMG Nintendo GameBoy.
Thanks for watching.
I can't speak for everyone else, but there is nothing more satisfying then seeing a broken electronic work again. Nice video.
And nutting/fapping
@@g1transformersreviews817 Well, nutting and fapping can only last so long. Perhaps with a good electronic device you could have more lasting and reliable satisfacrion.
Yeah༼ つ ◕‿◕ ༽つ
Dude this is so cool, I could only wish to be like you in the future. We'll i mean like surrounded by consoles and knowing how to fix them.
Did your wish come true yet?
I love this video. It's great to see someone restoring these old handhelds. It's kinda sad how people are just ready to throw stuff out because it's a little dirty.
im really starting to enjoy these types of videos
especially because i love all the old consoles
keep up the great work man!
im glad i stumbled upon your channel. i always see things like this on ebay too. Your mentality is very positive, and inspiring. Humans are blessed to have members with minds that work in the ways yours does.
Hey mate, just wanted to say that I really admire what you do. It's so fascinating. The time and effort you put into refurbishing collectibles makes me want to do the same. Keep up the great work!
I wish I had someone like you around town so I can repair all my faulty consoles.
This came up in my feed this morning. I've already seen it a few times. I along with others miss your vids. :(
Sold as junk..... Sad face :(
ICE CUBE TRAY!!!!! BRILLIANT !!!!! why didnt i think of that
I used a mini muffin tray when taking apart a gamecube.
RedPillorBluePill you can also pick up a magnetic screw tray from the hardware store if you take things apart a lot.
its not as cheap as a ice cube tray though lol, its a great tool when your younger and want to mess with things.
RedPillorBluePill Exactly what I was thinking!
i use an old speaker i pulled out of a tv! :D
It was really satisfying to see you refurbish an old game-boy, even so that I subscribed to your channel, hoping to see some more restored old glories. That was actually really inspiring. Thx :D
Been fixing Gameboys for years and never knew about that thing with the screens, I figured they were just broken. Thanks for that!
These videos are strangley soothing and comforting. Love 'em.
conkers pocket tales is like 5 pounds on ebay, so you actually kinda got that gameboy for free
lol but the game didn't work
deIlluminati bought one from a thrift store for $2.50. Of course it needs some work, buttons are worn, missing screen cover and one vertical line from the LCD screen is missing...they are easy fix.
And the magnifier......
I have Conker's Pocket Tales. It's not my kind of game, so I never play it.
I just wanted to say I enjoy your videos a bunch man. I always look to see if you have new videos first when I get on here. Keep up the good work man.
Fixed my Gameboy screen by following the advice on this video. You're an absolute star! Keep up the good work!
I love ur vids man!!! because of u, i decided to replace my ps4 cd rom drive and mod one of my ps4 controllers. thanks for the inspiration. keep posting ill keep watching
I've had two of these gray brick GB's for many years and both have had screen issues. I've always pondered if it was just a connection between the screen and board, yet never tried to do a thing. Now, I finally know how to fix them. Thank you for proving my theory.
What was running on the gameboy when you were holding the heat over the connections under the screen to give it a solid black screen?
use the contrast wheel to turn it black
Thanks :)
Conker's Pocket Tales is a game I'd very much love to get. I'm a massive Rareware fan.
I absolutely love your Let's Repair series! I think we'd all love to see more of these if you get the chance to do more!
Awesome video. Great way to show how Nintendo was ahead of the game. Most of their systems die-hard. They don't make them like they used to!
+SaturdayMorningAlive Should see this one that Nintendo put in their New York shop. A soldier took it with him to the battle field. Somehow, the thing wound up all scorched. But darned if it didn't survive and try to play a game. One tough little console.
+Jerod Park yeah i heard of that, survived through the entire building it was sitting in being blown up, and i think the dude found it still on
1:40 bloody hell he's got a knife m8. call the bobbys
XD
If you're implying he's English or Australian then wrong on both parts! He's clearly and obviously Scottish. You must be an American.
Paul JC fiht me m8 u w0t m8 fiht me m8 1v1 me m8 fiht me.
+50% Banana (It's DNA idiots) with writing like that you must be a child and I don't beat kids up, only men I don't like. Go and do your homework and stop watching You Tube
Paul JC Mate it's a fucking joke.
Watching this 8 years later and look at how much the cost of a DMG is now compared to back then 😮🤯🤯
I'm still learnig these things about fixing things and how to know what to do. These videos are a great help.
that moment when you realize ten year old batteries are in your gameboy. 😱
my Gameboy Color had 10 year old batteries, still played for around 4 hours, too.
I found a Gameboy Pocket with batteries that expired in 2005. They were completely dead, but there was zeroi corrosion.
I know how that feels. Cause about 3 or so years ago my mom found here old game boy in her closest that had batteries in it that where about 10 or so year old. She gave the system to me and I was playing I think Tetris and I heard a loud pop then I noticed that the batteries somewhat exploded. But overall it wasn't that bad at all.
Yeah
Yeah but I cleaned it up right after it happened so that it didn't do much damage over time.
Damn, you really do a good job at refurbishing these things. Looks brand new.
Nice video! I've done this myself a couple times, feels awesome to bring back life into something so loved as a child. I've recently gotten into Nintendo repairs myself as a hobby, I'm sure I'll be visiting your channel for reference in the future, SUBSCRIBED.
i really enjoy watching your videos of your work and repairs. hope you continue to do more.
I love that you have repaired my favourite retro console! Really great work 👍🎮
This video is 11 years old, but it helped me today, thank you)
I'm blown away about the screen fix! I'm totally going to fix mine now!
i recently got an original gameboy from ebay and it worked perfectly except for the screen, this guide was really helpful when fixing the console. thx
Thanks both of you for the responses! It makes me glad to hear that you can come so far by practice.
I wish you both a Merry Christmas.
I have my own original Game Boy (I brought from 2018) and fortunately it's still in great condition. The system to me is priceless treasure.
People are now charging over $60 for broken, non-functional GameBoys (because they know people will fix them). I can no longer afford eBay junk because everything is top dollar.
Can't even get a decent replacement Shell for my Red Gameboy. It is literally impossable.
I thank u for helping me with refurbishing my gameboy sps. You're excellent at what you do and I thank you for making these videos
I originally thought that the screen was completely screwed in this project, but I was very surprised when I saw that the problem was that simple to solve. Even though I'm 15, I'm in love with retro consoles and your videos fixing them. I live in Lithuania, and unfortunatly there's no good way to get items from ebay for me, so I usually go to flea markets to look for faulty stuff. So far the oldest things I've come across were a N64 and a PS1. They both work just fine, and I paid for both of em 4 dollars. A nice deal if you ask me :P I love refurbishing old stuff.
EvkaX155 lucky i live in estonia i always go to flea markets and find only women clothes
Imre Saks Same here, I rarely find anything good at the fleamarkets in my area.
But still why won't you use eBay
Imre Saks Either the guys don't ship faulty stuff to my country, or if they do, the shipping costs more than the item is worth :(
Go to eBay.co.UK and search for EU only stuff
I remember when my DMG started loosing vertical lines, and it was beginning to make game play difficult. When I finally got a GBC, my DMG had an unusable screen. I didn't know what to do with it so it got placed in a junk drawer and forgotten. Then one day, I saw a video on RUclips that used that same fix you showed. I tried it out on mine, and I got my screen back. The only problem is that I put a screw in the hole that was marked not to place a screw in it. It put a hole in the foil reflector, but it still worked. I think I bought a DMG with a faulty screen just to fix that one. If I did, It's not really much used today unless I had a flash cart that I could load many games on.
No, don't remove that tape it'll void your warranty! Great vid, really nice to see something that could have been binned rescued and given such care. I had a Gameboy with missing lines, I thought it was beyond help so threw it about ten feet up into the loft through the open loft hatch - it works fine now :)
I made a brand new gameboy by doing what was said in this video and I figured out about holding the solder iron away from the contacts on my own. Really cool stuff, and awesome old console to try games on the way they were played.
Hi, what temperature do you need to run the soldering iron on the screen contacts?
Really nice job repairing the screen. I never thought to use a solder iron to do that. I always used a heat gun at my shop and it was a major pain in the arse to get it just right.
Love your videos man, well explained, simple joy, and your UK based, I enjoy watching a console refurb and the stuff you find is everyman stuff. not too wallet smashing, good work man!
you can learn ALOT from this guy!
You can also learn free grammar from me. It's "a lot" not "alot".
Thanks for your informative video. I've just fixed my old gameboy screen following your method. Keep up the good work.
I love this video/series! Keep up the good work! I love watching videos on old nintendo stuff. I subbed and look forward to more videos :)
Thanks for this! Just repaired the screen of a game boy I got at the boot fair for £3!
I've fitted a new screen cover too and cleaned it up, and it's literally MINT now!!! :-)
My console/computer repair is all self taught but still love watching these videos,
I Just love fixing electronic Gismos of allsorts :)
Looked great at the end. A good tip, keeping a few spare parts systems, save some time not having to solder etc.
I'm very curious as to how you stuck the screen back on. Did you use double-sided tape or something?
Awesome and very educational im planning to buy broken gameboys as well since i dont know anything about computers im very happy to see videos like this. Ive always loved those old Gameboys/old games.
I got a working one for $4.00 USD that was in its box and had Mega Man III in it!
Where
Wow
Nice
Nice job. You saved a game boy from total destruction. You win!
On the plastic housing, hot soapy water and a tooth brush. The metal contacts I simply switched out for clean ones from the donor systems. But if I didn't have spares I would use a wire brush and steel wool to remove corrosion. Basically the same way you would clean any other piece of tarnished/corroded metal.
Thanks, same back at you! Hope Santa was good to you!
Quick random ME2 question for you. Without giving me any spoilers, was it a bad idea of me to hand over the Collector's base to Cerberus? I'm now having second thoughts, haha. Completed it in the wee small hours of Xmas eve and got given ME3 as a gift Xmas morning :) . Will that decision have any major game changing repercussions in the 3rd game?
On another note, Mass Effect 2 was an absolutely amazing game! Loved it.
. Just gana say. wish i had this kind of skill. This guy makes it look simple but you try do some of this stuff with out prior experience. ..well done man.
Dude thx for helping me fixing my Gameboy screen it was the same problem like yours and I did the thing you did and now I can finaly enjoy my Pokemon and other games :D
Thanks Ed. Using your advice on camera position to film these :) .
Have you had your Neo Geo delivered yet?
Thanks dude. Same here. I have 2 big crates out in the shed where I dump all my junk electronics. I've also taken to stripping components and boards from general household devices now too, haha. Loads of useful parts to salvage!
It's weird, I felt I should have maybe desoldered that cracked power jack for making this vid. But IRL that's not the kind of task I'll undertake if it can be avoided. So I just switched out the rear board to make life easier :P.
I don't know if you know, but if not (or if someone else could be helped out by this) a mixture of white vinegar and water (I use about 50-50) can be used to clean corroded battery terminals caused by leakage. I usually mix the vinegar and water in a small bowl and use Q-tips to apply it to the terminals. Good as new!
Thanks dude. This one was a fun little project to work on :) . Stuff like this also makes for inexpensive and fun gifts :) .
dude your videos kick ass! dont stop, I always look forward to them
OMG! This was really cool to watch! Wish i knew you, i have so many things lying around you could fix hehe!
Awsome, love this channel so far.
what glue did you use to put the screen cover on the gameboy back as mine just fell off :(
I just wanted to say thanks. This video helped me get my ancient Gameboy working again :)
The battery section is the original and the same one shown at the start of the vid. Just cleaned it out with warm soapy water like the rest of the console. Popped in some new metal contacts and it looks good as new.
hi. do you actually touch the ribbon cable with the soldering iron? or just hold it close to it? i messed up my screen and the cables came off :( i need a new screen now but want to know how to fix the lines
This may have been covered, but what chemical is best for cleaning the plastic?
For the circuit board, is it safe to use iso prop for these old components?
One of MacGyvers best friends!
i got a working gameboy for 5 usd at a flea market and its good to know i can self fix the small line issue on the right side of the screen.
when i get around to giving it a clean up it will look even better, but for now i thought it was just cool i found a working one for so cheap.
despite the fact i still had my old gameboy pocket
At what temperature did u set your soldering iron at to repair the lines on your screen? I've got the same problem but don't want to apply too much heat.
I was pretty happy with how it turned out in the end. I saw this GB on ebay thinking it would be a really straight forward clean up job. Turned out I was wrong :P .
I've recently run into my old gameboy and it seems to have the same corrosion issue this yours did. What did you use to get rid of the corrosion/clean the battery port?
really nice, how do you know if the gameboy that you brought on ebay is reparable or not, I mean how you detect the problems before buy? or is a lotto? some can be unrepairable.
Nice tip for repairing missing pixel rows, hadn't thought to try that.
I've fixed a game cartridge with faulty mask ROM before. Seems the issue was that some of the bonding wires inside the IC package were loose from the chip. Squeezing the ROM chip hard seemed to make it work for a moment, so I did a permanent fix by wedging a wad of paper between the IC and the top of the cartridge shell.
How did you clean up the contacts for the battery compartment please? Or if you switched it, what would you normally use to clean them?
I really love your repair videos Martin! Waiting for the consolized MVS!
Nice job! Love the videos! What do you use for cleaning the battery corrosion? I haven't been able to find something that works well.
For battery corrosion, I found that vinegar on a q tip works very well. Just don't let it drip into the game.
It's difficult to say. Moisture damage? dirty contacts? It could be any number of things. Try plugging it into a wall adapter and see if that helps.
......you just gave an oldie Game Boy it's life back.....
I'M SUBSCRIBING!!!!
how were the 3 metal contacts for the battery cleaned when they were taken out? did they get a bath in something?
If I were him, I would be ecstatic that my old, nostalgia-filled Gameboy went to such a great home, with someone who took the time to refurbish the thing and get it running again.
I'm 8:44 minutes in and this is great. How does the soldering iron not melt that ribon when you're getting those connections back? Sorry i haven't touched a soldering iron but like once 20 years ago but now I'm interested
Could you tell me what adhesive you used for the screen, and what product you used for scrubbing the battery connectors, please? Thanks!
Great repairing! Now that GB seems new!
My humble request for the next tutorial is how to repair faulty drives on PlayStation and PS2 consoles!
Ice cube tray to hold the screws is genius :)
To clean corrosion the parts you need is:
White vinegar - any vinegar you use
4 ear picks
a flat head screwdriver
Left over container
Old toothbrush
1. Fill left over container with white vinegar
-Brush corrosion very good to help the vinegar to clean very good
-dip ear cleaner in white vinegar and clean on the corrosion on the plug and negative internal
-use the other side of the ear cleaner to clean the corrosion with the vinegar
2. Use flat head screwdriver
-Use flat head screw driver and scrape on where the corrosion is located next or on the plus and negative internal
-Use another ear cleaner to dip in white vinegar and clean again where you cleaned it'll give a chance to save your device and motherboard.
-Use another side of the ear cleaner and clean where you cleaned the same location again.
3.Dry and let it sit
-(Lastly) make sure there is no more white vinegar left in locations
-Let it sit and dry for 30 minutes or more
-Test the batteries
---Tips by Jonathan Litz---
Damn that ice cube tray for screws is an incredibly good idea..
I really enjoy watching your videos. Just one quick question, will you have any idea of what you want to do when fixing these consoles before you get them, or do you just go along once they arrive. KUTGW :)
I have a question I have a old gameboy like in the video one I am sadly not experienced enough to repair. I think it mostly just has a battery problem. Would you be able to fix and do you by chance have a second you would be willing to sell? Going retro for my kids.
I found a blue version of this just the other day in the electronic recycling bin in my buildings trash room. It also had a game in it, Super Mario Land IIRC. It worked perfectly, a little grimy but nothing that can't be cleaned. The battery compartment looked fine. There was also a PS1 in great condition, which I left. A couple of days earlier I found a 14" CRT television (w. built in DVD player) in almost new condition. That I use for my Atari 8-bit computer.
I know that it's kinda of a false analogy since it's spare parts anyway but I can't help but looking at it humorously like fixing a computer by cleaning the screen, readjusting the cable and then just replace the computer itself.
I really enjoy your videos, appreciate the work and envy the craftsmanship, I've been thinking about going back to school, do you've an education in this field or is it self taught? thought about computer engineering but it seems to be more about software and little HW
Hey Retro, do you think I can use the tip of a hot glue gun to fix the vertical lines? I do not own a soldering iron. :(
I find the idea of taking out the main motherboard, and replacing it with another one a bit odd. I mean, does it still technically count as the same Gameboy?
Ship of Theseus for dorks
We’ll never know.
MadameSprixie if you put someone else’s kidney into your body, are you still the same person?
Isn't this like a popular paradox?
If you replace just a button from the gameboy, it's still the same gameboy, right? But then if you keep changing things until everything I completely new, is it still the same gameboy?
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you sell the refurbished gameboy for? What sort of profit do you get? Thanks for the great video!
No one every seems to explain using the soldering iron to fix the missing lines on the lcd screens, but is the iron unplugged or do you have it set to a very low heat setting? I imagine there is no heat due to the fact that it would melt the plastic.
i have a question for you mate sometimes when i repair psp's after i clean up everything and im done reassembling it sometimes the directional buttons dont work.. why? what am i doing wrong?
