Let's Repair - Ebay Junk - Nintendo 3DS - Money Doubler - Console Repair + Resale

  • Another "let's repair" Vlog where I document the fail/win process of buying faulty goods in the hope of an easy fix. This time I got myself a faulty Nintendo 3DS boxed and complete from ebay for the grand total of £35 including free shipping.
The console is switching itself off when the top screen is opened beyond a certain point. So I have a go at fixing it with the hopes of selling it for a little profit.
    Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much, I fixed mine! I managed to figure out what you were trying to say. For anyone wondering, the main ribbon cable on the back of the top screen coming out from the hinge is too slack and you need to stick it down with glue or electrical tape in it’s closed position.

My 3DS has this same issue. Started years ago when I was in 5th grade. I saved up some money and bought a 2DS as a replacement, and transferred all my data before it was lost. I tried to fix it later, but dumb kid me couldn't figure it out. Now that I've had some experience modding and disassembling some game boys, I am going to give it another go and see if I can bring my old girl back to her former glory, and perhaps transfer my data back onto it!

I hate taking apart the 3DS. Those ribbon cables are such a pain to get seated properly. Managed to make a working one from 2 broken ones from ebay (one had been dipped in a cup of tea and the other had a smashed top screen) and have another broken one in my drawer that fell in the sea that I hope to fix. I already cleaned all the salt out of it and cleaned the contacts with isopropyl but am waiting for a charger to arrive from Ebay.

so I just bought the new 3de XL with the extra 2 bumper buttons. I had my old 3Ds xl lying around and decided to give it one last shot to fix it. I kid you not. I tried everything to get it to work already. This is my second time coming to this video and others that are similar. so nothing worked, Until today I decided to turn it on. But before tried turning it on, I decided to remove the back part for the top screen. (this is dangerous because I didn't take of the battery, I was just rying to see if I could locate anything else beside the ribbon cables being the problem) Without the back cover on the top screen I have manged to keep my 3DS Xl long enough to make a system transfer. I would say use this as a final resort thing. also do be carful when doing this, since power will be running through the console. also this just might be a coinsedence.

I saw this video and took the risk to buy one console with that same problem for just 35 euros. It wasn't very easy to identify which cable was giving the problems but I solved it by putting some tape on the back of the screen. The only problem is that when I close it while powered on it turns off when I'm going like 50% of of apperture, with brightness from 2 to 5 (with 1 it keeps working normally). But that doesn't matter 'cause it works great when it's opened, with full brightness or full 3D even: Thank you!! :D

Love that it was just a simple reseating of ribbons. I recently had to reseat a cable on a Gaems G155 PGE... Pulling it apart was kinda scary... like I was going to break the screen. Once I pulled it apart it was just a simple reseat job and BOOM... sorted. Repair would have cost around 400 if I had sent it back, minimum 80 if I had ordered a new screen. lucky this time though :D
Really need to secure it though... its just held in with spite and bile right now... hatred of the screen flickering.

I hope that my 3DS can still be fixed. It's a flare red device. Aside from not having a functional battery anymore and having a non-working AC input, it doesn't go to home menu when turned on, just black screen. However, if I try to press POWER, then it goes into the sleep mode menu screen. Then if I click "turn off", it goes normally and shuts down. However, if I try to go to home menu by closing system and opening again or clicking "HOME" at sleep mode menu screen, then the system freezes at the the white "HOME Menu" loading screen.
I think that the OS could have been corrupted...

I found I need to get a pair of tweezers so I can put the ribbon cables back in. Without those it's extremely hard to put some of them back, but other than that the 3ds xl is fairly easy to take apart and put back together.

Great job on your console fixing endeavors! The 2DS problem is different, because the 2DS's screens are just one screen, and the bottom has a resistive touch layer. It could possibly work, but you may need a specialized 2DS screen for repair.

+Da-Ja Thinks Back in 2013 when I uploaded and made this video, yes! Did you watch the whole vid? I traded it in for £72 cash ($109). So my money was doubled.

RetroGameTech Very nice, indeed! I just found your channel this morning (the wonderful Game Box Advance -_-) and have been further attracted to all your deep and detailed repair videos. I love watching old stuff that looks like new stuff, it's refreshing.

very nice work. as i expect a lot of faults with handhelds are.. a simple problem, just takes some skill and care to actually get in to the system and to put it back together.
i would definitely get a 3ds if i could get one for 35 quid..
how much do you think the game store will give you for it? if its 50 i'll match it. ;)

Mines finally died after 9 years. It had the speaker fault once in 2014, then worked fine. Now its died fully and wont even turn on to standby mode (screen closed). Sadly decided to replace.

Haha, yeah stripping these things is fiddly work! And having to rebuilding them multiple times just for testing is not fun! Turned out good in the end, though :)

That happened to my 3DS 1.5 months after I purchased it. It was under warranty so I returned it and gave me a new one because they couldn't fix it.

It might be where you are. Around here(still in the USA), all the game stores will offer cash. Of course, the trade in value they offer is higher since they aren't exactly handing you real money.

I am almost sure that the problem is broken FFC itself (not just sitting problem). I have repaired tons of mobile phones with this particular problem and I learned (the hard way) that if you do not completely replace the part then it is going to fail again very soon. It's probably already dead since this video is from 2013.

I've done this on two systems. It's a nightmare to repair. Parts are so tiny.
