Hey hun, thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry to hear that you are having a rough time, don't lose heart. Just take baby steps and remember that you are building a new lifestyle, there are no quick fixes with PCOS. Be kind to yourself. Take care x
You may want to ask your doctor for weight loss pills to help or metformin for insulin resistance. Intermittent fasting, exercise, and eating 80% clean Whole Foods was it for me. I’ve done keto, vegan, paleo, etc. but intermittent fasting plunged my fasting morning blood sugar by 9 pts in 3 weeks. Fasting also helps with inflammation in addition to insulin control.
I’ve been dropping weight like never before, using the diet plan *2WeightLossFast. Com* It’s been the most powerful plan I’ve ever used. Do a Google search and read up on this.?
THANK YOU!! Dr James. I had lost faith and confidence in myself due to the weight gain. I have been daignosed with PCOS since 2017 . my weight loss is on and off. Thank you for your videos. I feel like I stand a chance now.
I have been exercising 6-7 days a week for the past 3 months along with dieting, and have not lost any weight at all. When I was on birth control a little over a year ago, I lost 45lbs in one month without changing diet or the amount of exercise I was doing. I was on it for about three months. Since I’ve stopped birth control, I have gained 67lbs in a year and it’s killing me.
I love my milk tea so much. But I recently got diagnosed with (asymptomatic) PCOS 🥺 thank you so much for this straightforward video. Looking forward to more content!

Great video! I love that you explain both the Whys and Hows. I love that you covered gut health and exercise too, which is often overlooked in weight loss.
This was so helpful! My friend sent me this because he knows how much I have struggled with this topic and about how bad I feel about myself because I can never seem to lose weight no matter what I try. Thank you for posting this and I look forward to more about PCOS to help me understand. When I was diagnosed, my doctor didn’t give me any information aside from the fact that I would need birth control to regulate my period and that I would possibly have excess facial hair and unfortunately I lost my health insurance before I could follow up and ask for more information. Thank you, thank you for posting this resource. 🥺🙏🏽
I've been working out since September and the only thing that has worked for me to bring back my cycle was dance training. I'm doing proper hip-hop and dance foundations and to be a better dancer I need good body control so I naturally started working on flexibility. It's really made me have better body control in general and now my periods (slightly irregular) have naturally returned and its a huge win for me.
I have been struggling with my weight for the past 4 years and haven't been able to figure out why. Then a couple months ago I went to the doctors and was diagnosed with PCOS. Before then I could never figure out why no matter what I did I could not lose weight. I always ate pretty well and exercised 6 days a week (my boyfriend is a personal trainer lol) and still could not lose weight!! I started following these tips 9 days ago and so far I've lost 7lbs! Highly highly recommend cutting out sugar and dairy like Dr. Carmen James said to start. If you can follow all her tips! Also, my favourite exercise it HIIT and then strength training.
Katrina // I’m 14 years old and obese with pcos and I’m thinking about cutting out dairy and sugar too. I just had a question though, instead of regular milk I started drinking almond milk, but it has sugar very high on the ingredients list. Is it still okay? Or is there a better option?
banana Hey! I would try to choose dairy alternatives that are unsweetened. They don’t taste great at first but over time they aren’t so bad. My favourite thing to do is add them to smoothies with some fruit to make everything taste better. My personal favourite right now is 1 cup of unsweetened chocolate almond milk with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter, a banana and 1/2 ice! You would never know the milk is unsweetened! Since I’ve cut out milk and dairy in May I’ve lost 30lbs! So if it’s possible for you to do so I would highly recommend. Also keep in mind it isn’t perfection that helps you with your journey, but consistency ☺️ so if you mess up a day don’t give up, start fresh the next day!
I just started weightlifting yesterday and I've noticed that i enjoy it way more than doing cardio. plus i didn't see any results with cardio. this video was very informational and i will take these tips to help me on my weight loss thank you!!
I’ve been dairy free for two weeks. My sugar isn’t completely cut, but it is much less than before. I have started on chia seeds in my oatmeal (yum!). I don’t eat with plastic serving items anymore. my sleep is better, but I’m still working on that. I have noticed a difference already. Thank you!
Good Morning Dr. Carmen, I want to tell you how much I appreciate this straight forward video. I thank God for you, Doctors have been trying to throw pills at me since I was 14. You understand how to eat to live. The only way I know how to thank you is living my life with the knowledge that you have presented. I will keep you updated on my results. this is day one of me at least eliminating processed foods/sugar. 6/1/2020. Eventually I will move on to the dairy. I will give you a update in 8 weeks. May God bless you in all you do because you have certainly blessed me.
Oh thank you for clarifying this. I read some where that weight training might be bad for a woman with pcos because you start building more muscle with the high level of testosterone, but I love weight training .
It all depends on the type of exercise you are doing. 45 minutes, 5 times a week of slow, resistance exercise is an average rule of thumb, but this will fluctuate. I also suggest less strenuous exercise while menstruating for example and also increasing the amount of movement during the day (taking the stairs, parking further from the entrance, standing while in meetings/ while working at your desk etc) to avoid big chunks of time exercising.
I'm actually a guy looking up these videos. I know it sounds strange. But, I actually am struggling from some weight gain from mood stabilizer medicines and I think there are some similarities such as the insulin resistance. The part where she mentioned the fermented foods/drinks enlightened me. Now that is really thinking outside the box. Also reminded me how much I love kombucha and wonder why I ever stopped drinking it. Also like others have said I like the energy you put out it's bubbly and bright. Thanks again for the good video.
@@skykelley771 I get the GT Gingerade Kombucha a lot of people don't like the taste but I love it. And If I remember right I think I weighed a bit less when I was drinking it. Not sure if there's a relation to that but I think that it's definitely worth trying again.
Hey Violet, the general idea is that long, intense exercises can be more stressful for your body than helpful. As long as you aren't exerting yourself too much and for too long, these exercises can be great. I would also suggest splitting up workouts if you'd like to get a longer session in. Hope this helps.

Yes. Fruit contains natural sugars and also fibre. The fibre helps to balance out the sugars. You have to watch out for smoothies or juices from concentrate as they tend to be mostly fruit and the fibre has been extracted making them predominantly sugar. Hope that helps.
Things that have worked for my weight loss: Myo-inositol supplement with chromium and folate - this was a game changer, I started seeing real change Vitamin D3 Fibre Probiotic supplement (30 billion) Resistance band exercises Yoga Cutting out gluten Working on cutting out dairy, but not perfect yet
They laughed when I told them I was going to lose fat with just using *2WeightLossFast. Com* , but after I showed these people amazing effects after I used it they are begging me to share with them about it. Of course I won't let them know the detail about this diet plan, hahaha?
What is the difference between PCOS and PCO. I went to my doctor after trying to get pregnant for 2 years. They diagnosed me PCO after seeing several follicles in my ovaries. I’ve regular periods and I also ovulate. I’ve gained weight over the past 2-3 years and it’s difficult to loose.

Hey there, You probably do not meet the criteria for a diagnosis on PCOS. To be diagnosed with PCOS you need 2 of the following: - Polycystic ovaries (lots of cysts on the ovaries) - Elevated androgens (“male” type sex hormones) - Irregular or infrequent periods (Which infers little or no ovulation) You can confirm this with your doctor if you are not sure 🌼
I eat a whole food and plant based diet.Meaning I don’t consume anything processed. I also live a toxic free lifestyle (free of all chemicals and plastics) I walk everywhere and practice yoga daily (and once the gyms open I’ll be strength training again) yet I cannot shift my excess weight. I’m not overweight but I have excess abdominal fat. I have lived by all of these tips for a while but still struggle with weight loss. Any ideas what else could be responsible?
I have questions though. Yes, you can cut out produced sugar, like sweets, cakes etc. But what about fruit for instance bananas are very sweet but they have fiber and good magnesium. Dairy can cause inflammation, but if you cut out dairy completely, what about all that calcium you should be getting not to result in a complete wreck bonewise when you are older? Not enough calcium can cause serious problems with bone density and result in osteoporosis.
GREAT tips. I knew most of them as I am seeing IVF feritilty Dr's for fertility gut health. But I loved hearing all the key info in this fun video format. I also thought the triple threat explanation was awesome. It made so much sense to me, yet felt so unfair. Usually triple threat is a postive thing as it means you are amazing at singing, dancing and acting (I am a Performing Arts teacher). Please keep sharing cool videos. And if you could make one on reducing weight in the lead up to fertility and or during IVF treatment that would be great. Thank you Dr Carmen James!
Simply visit *2WeightLossFast. Com* and you’ll find the best weight loss plan there is or ever seemed to be. Our sister dropped 18 lbs on this diet program and We have already burned off some 11 lbs and I’ve just began. Read all about it
Soni Kamal I think HIIT is very rough on your body because it puts your body in a stressed state and can cause you not to lose the weight bc it causes the body to release stress hormones
MsLivinglegend19 hmm I get what you mean, but I also heard from another trainer that stress causes the body to change. I know for sure more effort goes into shorter hiit workouts than long cardio ones but I guess it’s more of what works for each of us?
Hey hun, yes, athletes with PCOS have to focus on stress management and restorative exercises because the strenuous physical activity stresses the body out. So I’d suggest including things like meditation, yoga, breathing exercises etc to reduce stress. Take adaptogens like ashwaganda, maca and medicinal mushrooms, eliminate sugar to balance cortisol, try not to over exercise, eliminate caffeine, add a pinch of salt to your water
Hello, Dr. James, I was hoping you might answer my question. I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 11, and managed to lose over 20 lbs. However, my weight quickly came back and I have gained weight over the past ten years in bursts of 5-10 lbs at a time, even though my diet had not changes and I do not have diabetes (I have insulin resistance and pre-diabetes). When I suddenly gained 15 lbs in a week, I decided that I has to so something and started counting calories. I have been very successful with this method and have cut out most carbs for the past 4 weeks. I have never eaten a lot of meat, oils, or butters, so that was not an issue, but I did start increasing my uptake of vegetables. However, I am very lazy and have been wanting to incorporate exercise in my new lifestyle. I have found much joy in zumba, but since it is cardio, I do not know if it will hurt me in the long run. Do you think I should stop doing zumba or incorporate weight lifting? Also, is it true that those of us with PCOS should cut out bread and gluten? Thank you for taking the time to read my question.
This video is very helpful!. I know I never get any good sleep. I go into work at 7pm and get off between 5-7 am. I want to try intermittent fasting but not sure what is the best time for me to not eat.
Can you make a video on "how to lose belly fat in pcos cause my weight is normal and my body is okay but I can't get rid of abdominal fat and abdominal fat is my one and only problem
I'm glad she said to cut out sugar. Sugar is just nasty and was what made my symptoms so bad growing up. The difference I noticed once I quit it was huge- plus once you cut it out, you literally won't miss it xD. Same goes for processed foods (in my case)
eghb85 From personal experience, I’ve been rly struggling with pcos weight gain (I put on about 4 stones within 3 months). I started to eliminate gluten and within a month, I’d lost so much weight and got back to my regular shape (maybe slightly heavier) so getting rid of gluten rly helped me!
Since many carb rich high calorie but non nutritious foods have gluten, many people loose weight when going gluten free! I think it’s pretty useful to be gluten free, it makes you feel great and you end up avoiding so many crap foods
@@skykelley771 I agree with you beautifully said!!! I'm finding my symptoms shoot through the roof when I'm eating gluten many refined carbs and dairy specifically. Anything getting away from too much sugars and processed fake chemical ridden foods will do us all well.
Eliminating sugar means giving up fruit though, there’s not enough robust research on pcos, at least not in the uk. I’ve been seeing a gynaecologist and dietician and there’s no set of tips that works for everyone- all trial and error but that’s where your tops come in,
Hi Bree, I do agree, trial and error is a great approach since we are not all the same. This should apply to all chronic disease because we all have different factors contributing to illness which need to be identified and reversed and at the same time, developing a lifestyle that supports healing should form the foundation of that plan. The one size fits all approach is definitely becoming less and less appealing as more people realise that there isn't a pill for every ill. With regards to fruit, especially when reversing insulin resistance, it may be necessary to eliminate it for a period. However, keep in mind that fruit contains many other anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties that can support a healthy lifestyle. I always advise trying a few approaches to see what works best for you. After all, your body is unique and what works for you may not work for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and take care of yourself.
I've read low glycemic index fruits and diet work better for most. So these are fruits that don't carry a ton of sugar like raspberries, blueberries etc. I've been working on my diet as well.
@@crosscultured6422 processed sugar is obvious but there are people who advocate for no fruits with pcos due to the sugar content being too high for stabilising insulin levels...hence the need for clarification.
@@dr.carmenjames I agree with you completely it's truly trial and error. It takes a lot of time to figure out what works for one's body since we're all different. We can agree processed foods, sugars, refined carbs are no good while I think dairy & gluten are extremely inflammatory. I loved this video. I agree that limiting fruit for awhile may be helpful then add back in. In my experience berries, melons, and citrus fruits work best for me.
Great question. In my opinion, the way we source our dairy currently is what makes dairy such a common source of inflammation. In particular the hormones in milk may cause further hormone disruption and this can make recovering from hormone imbalance like PCOS more challenging. But we are all different. I always suggest trying it out, see how you feel and track your symptoms. Your body knows what's best.
I take berberine instead because metformin gave me the runs. Berberine has been shown in research studies to act the same as metformin but without the ugly stomach side effects. I even have my diabetic mom - who is terrified of being put on insulin and cannot tolerate metformin because the nausea and diarrhea it produces are debilitating - trying berberine instead. So far, her glucose levels have come down a lot and she isn't hungry as often. Berberine, low carb, and having a regular bedtime and wake up time are really having a positive impact on her health.
@@JD-ht7yw Wow. I hadn't heard of the last two you mentioned. Is there anymore of things you would recommend than those? Also is there any of the ones you do recommend that you take yourself? If so I'd like to know you're experience with said supplements. Thank you so much.
I hope you can answer this question for me, I have PCOS but IBS as well so fermented foods and increasing my fiber is not good at all for my IBS issues it exacerbates them. What would you recommend in that case? thank you!!
Hi Brianna, thank you so much for reaching out. I would suggest starting with eliminating gluten and dairy first. This will assist with both conditions simultaneously and in addition, I would suggest a good quality probiotic to enhance gut health. I've actually recorded a video about IBS, hoping to publish it soon. Take care of yourself
I have an undiagnosed gut condition similar to IBS along with PCOS and fatty liver. Too much fiber makes my sides cramp like I am going to explode and simultaneously being stabbed, I do love fermented foods but have not seen much benefit from them. I do notice that wheat bread, pasta, or chips also give me pain and make me bloat while milk (dairy) soothes my stomach. So I am always confused as to what I should do. I also stay constipated when I only eat veggies and lean meats but if I eat anything fried or a little oatmeal then I will have a normal BM; but the oatmeal makes me bloat and fatigues me. Any advice for me Dr. James?
@@crosscultured6422 I'd advise trying an elimination diet for 30 days then add things back in one at a time. I've found typically gluten, dairy, vegetable oils and artificial sweeteners cause this bloating
Hey I had a question, do you think indoor cycling/ spin class is a good exercise for loosing weight with pcos? It’s something I really love to do and don’t want to stop
Wow very helpful! Not sure if I could cut out sugar but been eating more natural and trying to have say more fruit than chocolate and trying to have a treat day rather than just when craving. Been doing 20-40 mins exercise as well as walk. A lot of exercises have included cardio and seen a change to my shape but not weight so again helpful. I did notice a change from dairy but love it so much ❤️ will look at changing diet though because I like almond milk for instance
I tried using glucophage but it only made me feel very comfortable and uneasy. I always felt bloated even when I ate very little and I never wanted to eat. Some days I even felt like vomiting. However, I hear it works well for others. I guess it just depends on how you’re body reacts to it.
Same here. The best for me and many women is to do slow intense weight lifting exercises. I used to run 70mins each day on my crosstrainer plus intense workouts with no results. Since I do slow exercises with weights, (same calorie intake) i lost 20 pounds in 3 months. Which is a lot for me.
@@glo007 Im gluten and dairy free plus every morning i drink a vegan protein shake which is said to be important for ladies with PCOS. Also I take Ovasitol (Im from Germany and take a brand from here but in the US its called Ovasitol) It helps with insulin resistance in my opinion really good. I have less cravings. Since a bit I take saw palmetto 450mg a day to see if it helps with my hairloss. To get back to my diet, my calorie intake is the same just gluten and dairyfree plus vegan proteinshake every morning. I feel so sooo much better. I also gained so much muscles. I feel almost not lethargic anymore and finally with 31 years the best i ever felt. Also my period comes in time and regular.
I do a permanent whole 30 diet. Sleep ok could probably improve my routine. Exercise is the hardest for me as I currently just don't and work online in a production focused environment approx 70-80 hours a week. I'm sure I could find the time but I'm extremely unmotivated 😩
Thank you so much for this! This is definitely the most I've gotten when trying to learn more about my condition! I don't often intake processed sugar but lean on fruit, organic honey and dates. I don't know if I can survive the sugar withdrawal.
Due to a friend, I searched Google for the *2WeightLossFast. Com* . It’s certainly the best plan and the best deal I’ve actually seen. My sister implemented it and shed 6 pounds. I just began and I’m already lower 5 lbs.?
Tofu is a fermented soy that can be used in many dishes. Its high in protein and iron but low in sugar. I've found its improved my anemia, but I don't have PCOS so I can't speak for that.
With regards to fruit, it depends on how severe your insulin resistance is. If you are severely insulin resistant, I recommend cutting out fruit in the initial period when trying to gain control over blood sugar and insulin levels. In the long-term, incorporating fruit in moderation is no problem. Added sugars are the most problematic in PCOS. Fermented foods include: Kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha (low sugar varieties), non-dairy yoghurt.
Hi Rachel, great question. I think the keto diet can be very helpful if done right. There is certainly a wrong way of doing it which includes eating very inflammatory foods. I would suggest that you start off eliminating gluten, sugar and dairy and see how that works for you. You can also start including healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, coconut oil, hemp seed oil etc into your diet to ensure that you are consuming enough good fat. And try to ensure that half your plate is filled with veggies. After 2 weeks of that, you should start to see a difference. If you try it, let me know your experience :)

Take inositol supplement with berberine...u ll see results...along with proper diet and exercise
3 causes
1. Hormone imbalance
2. Insulin resistance
3. Chronic inflammation
Tips
- Eat fiber (veggies, jicama, berries, coconut flour, chia seeds, etc)
- Eat healthy fats (omega 3, avocado, coconut, chia, flax, some nuts, etc)
- Fermented food (kraut, kimchi, pickles, pickled veggies, etc)
- Exercise (less cardio, more HIIT, and some light exercise like yoga, walks)
- Cut added sugar (keep it between 20-50g sugar a day, more sugar= needs more fiber), some fruit is ok (much better than unnatural sugar)
- Sleep well
- Avoid certain chemicals (BPA, plastic, pesticides, clean care products)
- Avoid food with hormones (dairy**, soy-estrogen, garlic-testosterone)
But I love garlic 🥺🥺 or maybe its the testosterone talking 😭😭
Thank you for this.

Might as well water fast since I have to cut everything out..... 😔
Same girl, same!
Same just started weight training after doing a lot of cardio and body weight exercises...I pray this helps with reaching my goal weight

Tip #6: "get more/better sleep"
Me: *laughs in narcolepsy*
for all my problems they say get better sleep. I can't sleep that's my problem. Haven't slept well in 11 years
* cries in insomnia *
I think why we can't sleep well is part of our PCOS (ex. Insomia, narcolepsy and etc)
Omg, I was totally not expecting the chronic inflammation, but it is something I struggle with every time I try to start working out
Thank you for this video. I will literally look at something and gain weight. Like I could only eat like 900 calories a day and still gain weight. :/
how many times a week do you recommend exercising and for how long with pcos?
It all depends on the type of exercise you are doing. 45 minutes, 5 times a week of slow, resistance exercise is an average rule of thumb, but this will fluctuate. I also suggest less strenuous exercise while menstruating for example and also increasing the amount of movement during the day (taking the stairs, parking further from the entrance, standing while in meetings/ while working at your desk etc) to avoid big chunks of time exercising.
Dr. Carmen James thank you! I am more of a HIIT workout girl. How long and how many times a week of that would you recommend?

Hey Violet, the general idea is that long, intense exercises can be more stressful for your body than helpful. As long as you aren't exerting yourself too much and for too long, these exercises can be great. I would also suggest splitting up workouts if you'd like to get a longer session in. Hope this helps.

Yes. Fruit contains natural sugars and also fibre. The fibre helps to balance out the sugars. You have to watch out for smoothies or juices from concentrate as they tend to be mostly fruit and the fibre has been extracted making them predominantly sugar. Hope that helps.

Hey there,
You probably do not meet the criteria for a diagnosis on PCOS. To be diagnosed with PCOS you need 2 of the following:
- Polycystic ovaries (lots of cysts on the ovaries)
- Elevated androgens (“male” type sex hormones)
- Irregular or infrequent periods (Which infers little or no ovulation)
You can confirm this with your doctor if you are not sure 🌼

Not enough calcium can cause serious problems with bone density and result in osteoporosis.

what's the difference between HIIT and cardio? most HIIT workouts contain cardio workouts too.

Do you have any recommendations for an athlete with pcos?
Hey hun, yes, athletes with PCOS have to focus on stress management and restorative exercises because the strenuous physical activity stresses the body out. So I’d suggest including things like meditation, yoga, breathing exercises etc to reduce stress. Take adaptogens like ashwaganda, maca and medicinal mushrooms, eliminate sugar to balance cortisol, try not to over exercise, eliminate caffeine, add a pinch of salt to your water

Hey there, this is a great video and very it’s helpful! Just wondering if dance is a safe exercise for PCOS patients? I adoreeee dancing !!!

I have heard that women with PCOS should avoid gluten... what is your take on this?
eghb85 From personal experience, I’ve been rly struggling with pcos weight gain (I put on about 4 stones within 3 months). I started to eliminate gluten and within a month, I’d lost so much weight and got back to my regular shape (maybe slightly heavier) so getting rid of gluten rly helped me!
@@MsLivinglegend19 I'm definitely going to try this. I think dairy and gluten is so inflammatory for us with pcos.
What's left to eat 🤦♀️🤦♀️
She means processed sugar. Natural fruit sugar is not bad for you in moderation
Dairy is the best source of all nutrients and minerals including calcium. Is it important to really eliminate it?
Great question. In my opinion, the way we source our dairy currently is what makes dairy such a common source of inflammation. In particular the hormones in milk may cause further hormone disruption and this can make recovering from hormone imbalance like PCOS more challenging. But we are all different. I always suggest trying it out, see how you feel and track your symptoms. Your body knows what's best.
@@dr.carmenjames thanks
Thank you for the great video. What kind of supplements do you recommend and also what do you think about taking metformin for insulin resistance?
From my experience, metformin made me drop like ten pounds but after that not much help. It gave me really bad stomach problems as well.
Hi, I recommend berberine, myo-inositol, and primrose oil to name a few.
I recommend turmeric, ginger, spearmint tea, chasteberry, zinc, raspberry leaf tea
James?
I had this as well and I definitely think dairy and gluten caused this issue. Lady greens helped
@@crosscultured6422 I'd advise trying an elimination diet for 30 days then add things back in one at a time. I've found typically gluten, dairy, vegetable oils and artificial sweeteners cause this bloating

Same here. The best for me and many women is to do slow intense weight lifting exercises. I used to run 70mins each day on my crosstrainer plus intense workouts with no results. Since I do slow exercises with weights, (same calorie intake) i lost 20 pounds in 3 months. Which is a lot for me.

Can you explain why HIIT is ok, but not cardio. Isn't HIIT essentially cardio? I also have MS and HIIT is a no-go because it causes inflammation...
What about yogurt and curd
You could always try a non-dairy alternative :)
Does this mean giving up fruit?
Also what is a good fermented food to incorporate.
