Thanks so much for making this video. Learning that 86% of PCOS sufferers have an eating disorder makes me seriously emotional. I am that statistic. I know too well why women like us are so vulnerable to body image issues.

    A few points -
    1. this is why we need OB's or doctors specifically trained in PCOS. The lack of medical knowledge of PCOS is really sad.
    2. Once you do find a doctor who knows about PCOS it helps so much. I was put on metformin and i dropped weight effortlessly with intuitive eating. They said - of course you couldn't loose weight before, your body was literally fighting against you for every calorie!
Ladies - get a doctor how knows about PCOS and have them treat you. It makes a world of difference.

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. For the past three years I've been in the gym and tried to eat very clean and have only gained weight. A part of me knew I'd have it because my mom does. I was pretty devastated because I really want to lose weight and I knew that it'll be hard to do. With PCOS, it's pretty difficult to lose weight. This video is super informational and helpful about what I should try eating to help with weight issues. I'm hoping I can drop some pounds soon, and all the foods for the GI diet are ones I actually love. Can't wait to try it.

    PCOS & Hypothyroidism here.
I appreciate how the best health, nutrition and exercise advice teach you to actually listen to body cues because they provide insights into the state of your health. So much of the bad advice pretends like the body is a dumb accessory to preen and primp but provides no valuable information.
The bit about listening to the insulin response and going over what's happening prior to it was such a wonderful piece of advice. Thank you for taking on this subject!

THANK YOU for this! I’m a PCOS sufferer as well (did IVF for both my kiddos, had miscarriages, etc.) It’s crazy to me how common it is, and how little the medical community has to offer us in treating it. I’ve been lucky in that my metabolic profile has always been good (no insulin resistance, no high androgens) but just recently I tested high for triglycerides and cholesterol. 😢 I learned about inositol on Julie’s podcast (thanks Julie!) and I’m trying it out now hoping I can avoid medication. Fingers crossed.

When I was diagnosed with PCOS, there was very little research. I started a small support group online which has grown to over 700 women and men (their husbands , partners). I've tried everything for weight loss but with age and PCOS it definitely makes it harder. What works for me is intermittent fasting and eating certain times of the day. Plus regular cardio exercise. Without the exercise, everything swells up.
Thanks to this video I started taking vitamin D3 again (I'm always low), and Omega 3. I'm also taking a probiotic and feel great!

Thank you, I needed this. I was just diagnosed with PCOS last week. Though I figured I had it, because it runs in my family. But to hear it and it become a reality. Has shaken me to my core and hearing this. Especially about the ravenous cravings, I never knew it was so common with other women with PCOS. Almost all of my life I have struggled with eating (especially overeating because i was always hungry) and being overweight. And all the doctors ever said was to lose weight. I’ve even had a nurse tell me I was fat and to lay of the McDonald’s when just for lunch I had a sandwich. I went to the OBGYN which was where I got diagnosed and the first thing they recommended was birth control. To which I said no, and then they did mention a low g.i food intake and if I change my mind about birth control to give them a call. I knew I was going to have to do this on my way since I didn’t want to take birth control. And this video has given me hope. That I’m not alone in this, and the things I’ve experienced were because of me. But rather my body telling me something and now I’m leading to hear it.

As someone with PCOS, I went through so much infertility treatment to conceive my first child. Then I conceived my 2nd with no treatment at all BUT I had been taking Vitamin D supplements daily. While it's totally possible I just happened to ovulate that month, I attribute that conception to the Vitamin D.

Hello, I am a Dietitian and also have PCOS. I have some mixed feelings with some of the recommendations mentioned. If you are already struggling with a hormonal disorder and may have the physical symptoms of Acne, I would NOT recommend Milk (cows milk). I live in the States, so our cows milk is heavily processed and contains additives. Dairy may be worth cutting out or at best limiting. Also the weight explanation, with PCOS it is very common to gain/lose weight inexplicably, so if gaining or losing is the issue, the focus becomes at least maintaining the current weight. I am clinically by BMI consider to be Obese. How I started my journey to diagnose was because of the unexplained weight gain. I knew my eating habits, lifestyle, and medical history; the weight gain did not make sense so I started ruling out body parts until we got to the Ovaries. I find it helpful to change the mind set from dieting to lifestyle. Instead of focusing on eliminating food items aka diet, focus on what new items you can eat aka lifestyle full of whole foods. There is no "bad food" just focus on how many more wholesome options you now have. This is more likely to be sustainable and manageable. Also depression is a huge factor in this mess of condition. I find whole foods help me with my depression and limiting myself only makes things terrible which leads to not the best choices.

This would have been such helpful information to have years ago. I wonder why more doctors don’t study this. I was told to lose weight and take metformin and it would be fixed. But I was definitely weight cycling, had and eating disorder, etc. I ended up being diagnosed with NASH (non-alcoholic steato hepatitis live disease - stage 2 fatty liver disease) and told I needed to lose weight ASAP or risk needing a liver transplant. I opted for getting the duodenal switch bariatric surgery. This surgery did help me lose 120 and my doctor confirmed that my ovaries went back to looking normal. I began to have normal periods and ovulating. My hormone levels went back into balance. The official statement was that my PCOS was in remission. I am now 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I received no help to get pregnant.
Here’s the problem: weight loss surgery was an extreme solution and only helps some people. My cousin is like you, Abbey. She is thin and struggles with PCOS. What are people like that supposed to do? This video is very helpful because one can’t and shouldn’t simply lose weight to fix this.

I keep seeing evidence for a low carb diet, low GI diet or Mediterranean diet for PCOS weight loss. Is it possible to stay vegan and still adopt a low GI diet? I don’t have a lot of weight to lose but I do have that stubborn belly fat that won’t go away. I have literally seen my weight go up 30lbs go down 20lbs go up 50lbs go down 60lbs, go up 60lbs go down 90lbs and go up 50lbs since puberty and it’s horrible. I was always fit as a kid. All doctors ever say is weight fluctuations are normal in women. I’m like not 90lbs at a time doc. Now ever since my mom died I’ve lost half my hair easily it’s horrible. And it only spikes stress and cortisol and depression. And those cravings are real.

Hi Hailey, consider checking your nutrient profile i.e. tracking everything you eat and comparing to RDA for each nutrient. I tend to want to eat more (in the I'm-not-satisfied-and-I-have-no-idea-why way) when I'm deficient in iron. You'll be surprised at how difficult it is to get 100% iron RDA even when you eat meat. So you never know, it could be a deficiency not a disorder (not necessarily iron, but anything your body needs, which translates to, cravings). Also RDA is for the average person. Your body might need more than RDA depending on its own needs.
Like I have naturally higher levels of testosterone (very tall, lots of hair) so I might need more iron than the average woman.

Hi Hailey, have you ever been screened for ADHD? I have PCOS too and have always thought about food constantly and felt completely powerless to eat in a way that felt healthy (as opposed to slamming 3 bags of sour gummy bears in my car while crying). I was diagnosed this year with ADHD as an adult, and treatment has made a huge difference in the mental barrage of cravings. I'm actually able to notice my physical hunger cues. Just something worth looking into; might not be relevant to you but it was something I had never considered. Feel free to reach out if you have questions. ❤️

    PCOS suggestions:
Foods (low GI diet/lower carb): whole wheat bread, citrus fruits, milk, bulgur, sweet potatoes, chick peas, steel cut oats, lentils, healthy fats and proteins, higher fiber carbs, stabilize higher GI carbs with lean/healthy proteins and fats, be careful with restricting/too low calories/too few meals.
Supplements: vitamin d, probiotics, omega 3, inositol (!!)
Herbs, etc: macca root, ashwaghanda, holy basil, licorice, chase berry, tribulis terrestris.
    Anti-inflammatory foods, reduce CRP
Get a lot of sleep (7-9 is the typical recommendation) and stress management, quit smoking cigarettes, get acupuncture, avoiding known potential endocrine disrupters (eg BPA).
Exercise, yoga, meditation and massage, etc? (Not mentioned)
weight loss for overweight women? More in-depth info in video.
Eat enough food! Especially protein, and in AM and before bed.
    Medications (eg metformin, etc)

Now I will start my day with a black tea (and sometimes a green apple), followed by a polyphenol-rich smoothie (+collagen) for breakfast, and a big salad + 2 eggs scrambled for lunch. I will have a delicious helping of white basmati rice, a big salad, and sautéed chicken/shrimp/salmon for dinner. Sadly, I’m not eating red meat these days because it makes me constipated. I usually try to stop eating before 6 or 6:30 PM. I also try to drink Spearmint tea 2ce a day because it is clinically proven to lower androgen levels. I might snack on a date or two throughout the day, I might not. With this routine, my sugar and junk food cravings are no where NEAR as insane as they used to be.

I was only recently (a month ago) diagnosed with PCOS at age 23 and I really didn't receive any advice, information or guidance from my doctor. I've been referred to a gynaecologist but it'll be at least 40 weeks until my appointment, maybe due to covid but I'm unsure of exactly why.
I cried throughout this video because I've never felt so understood and looked after and seen! & I don't have anybody I can talk to about this, and this video was so helpful! Thank you so much for this 💕 wishing us all the best on our different, but same, journeys 💗

I literally cried while watching... I've PCOS since my periods started and I'm 27 years old now at 81 kgs. All my doctor could tell me is to reduce my weight and take Glucophage or birth controls. Got fed up of taking Glucophage thrice daily 3years ago so I switched to birth controls which only worsened my situation and lead to more weight gain. So I switched back to Glucophage. Went through an abusive marriage including a miscarriage unknowingly that I was pregnant and was teased by my now ex husband every other day about my weight even to an extent that he restricted my food intake as per his choices. Now all I want is to eat as I wish, but everyone tells me to reduce weight. Weight loss has always been so difficult and no one ever understands the cravings you get. Its really hard to maintain a healthy body weight while dealing with other emotional factors too. But most people don't get it and it really hurts when doctors even don't understand. Its not as easy as it always seems on social media to shed lots of pounds. My best wishes to everyone out there struggling with PCOS.

It’s NOT Inositol. There are about 9 different types of Inositol and the ones that make a difference are Myo Inositol and D-Chiro-Inositol. Please clarify this before women start buying general Inositol supplements.

I was prescribed the maximum dose of metformin (2000mg/day) along with having to eat a lower carb diet to avoid some of the negative side effects of taking the metformin. The beginning few weeks of taking metformin is SO AWFUL!!! It would be lovely to also talk about the benefits of metformin during pregnancy for those with PCOS. I was told by my doctor that it lowers my miscarriage rate from the 50% that is typical for those with PCOS, back down the normal rate for the average woman. However, she also talked about that the research isn't conclusive yet. So it was more a "let's try this and see"

    Wow I needed this video!!
My doctor told me the way to handle my PCOS was to lose weight - 50lbs, although she wanted me to lose more... i weight 160lbs and I’m 5’4... if I lost that much weight, I’d be underweight.... I’ve battled an eating disorder for the majority of my life and my doctor didn’t care whatsoever, she was so cold and uncaring, fat shamed me in her office, and I left in tears feeling so badly about myself in a way I hadn’t in so long. Thank you for calling this out, the both of you! I don’t think some of these doctors understand the impact that has on a person, it’s like telling someone who’s depressed to “stop being sad” or “it’s not that bad,” it doesn’t help in any way!

The only recommendation I’ve gotten from my doc to manage my PCOS is a birth control prescription. At the moment, I don’t mind being on BC, but I don’t want to take it forever. I would prefer to manage my PCOS more naturally (by integrating the tips mentioned here, for example) but don’t want to cause a shock to my body (explosive breakouts and emotional breakdowns) by quitting birth control. Do you have any recommendations?

    • @AbbeysKitchen

Michelle Kendall sometimes BC is necessary to regulate your period but it won’t necessarily improve all your symptoms. Everyone’s unique PCOS is so different so hard to say if you can safely come off or not

Hanna Bryant I actually knew about this supplement from Martin MacDonald (His IG account is @Martinnutrition if you want to seek more advices from him). His recommendation is:
      - 2-4g per day of 500g Myo-Inositol is a seemingly good starting dose.
      - There is another form of Inositol called D-Chiro-Inositol, don't use that.
(And if you insist on using it, DM him on Instagram for advice.)
      - Take it daily for 6 months.
Results can come much sooner but for some people/issues it can take that long. It took only 1 month for me to get my period back.

Seconded! There's so much out there that seems like weird advice and it's hard to know what's silly or tapping into trendy advice for the clicks, vs what's actually useful, or what's even less relevant if, say, one's condition is properly managed with medication. Some places suggest there's very little one might want to avoid or even limit, other sites are like "never eat XYZ" and it's like... really? I have Hashimoto's, am well-medicated and monitored, and have never really done anything specific with food - but I see so many people out there asking if there's a special way they should be eating with Hashimoto's or another kind of hypothyroidism and I suppose it makes me wonder if there's something to it, or if it's just Wellness Trend rearing its head again.
