It’s always funny to listen to someone with so much knowledge trying to explain/teach it to others. It’s so much harder than some think. Like when I’m trying to teach my kid how to do a certain math problem, I’m like yeah it’s easy and then trying to break it down in learning terms is so much harder in some instances and making it understandable.

Dr. Auger is the best! My professor and still today a mentor I watch every Monday when you upload new vids. Networking was an area I always struggled to understand but I'm getting it. OSI and TCP/IP are awesome topics!
From my understanding of what you need to for networking for cybersecurity or security operations standpoint is the deployment of routers and switches, firewalls, SIEMs, NIDS, HIDS and network taps. How you set them up, placement or positioning of them , how they work within a business enviroment. This then raises the question how do you go about securing this business private LAN from the external network ? The deployment of HIPS, NIDS, or Stateful and Stateless firewalls and can you audit the network and identify any open ports using basic pentesting tools and understand their output alongside understanding of endpoint protection and soild of understanding of network traffic. Once you can understood this your pretty much nearly there.

In Q4 2023, I was laid off. My search for a new career path began and I chose the fantastic path of Cybersecurity which I had been tapping at a personal level for years. But as a manager, you tend to focus your attention to other aspects of the business and I want to move to a more technical area. Why I am saying this? What Gerry is saying is absolutely true. You need to understand how systems interconnect. I did my post graduate degree in 1999, yes a year before the big Y2K buzz and I created a router as one of my projects. I wish I could go back in time and grab that brain and bring it to the present. Oh how I miss that brain, 😂.

I’m starting all my cyber security training now. I have an old CCNA from like back in 2013. I re-went through all the information for the new CNA. I was wondering if it would be beneficial or not needed to retake the exam before taking my security plus and everything else I’m planning. Also, if anybody’s interested Kevin Wallace who is a Cisco trainer in February is going to be offering a free play three day Boot Camp and the CNA if you sign up now I guess you can get it for free otherwise it will be like $70. He’s a fabulous teacher also in networking .

One question that always bugs me when i get OSI explained, is what are the layers? How to think of them. I have some weird construct in my head of layers and whats in them, but what are they? Maybe it would also help, if we get explained how and by what device/software each package gets pushed up and down the layers, how they get encapsulated with additional "data"/headers and whatever they're called again... but it's a good overview. The first thing very funny 20 years ago when i made my IT apprenticeshop: A few weeks after hearing of the uniqueness of mac addresses of network cards, a case came up within the same network where two cards actually had an identical mac address 🤣 I guess that was some manufacturers mistake and we just ordered these two affected cards from the same batch, couldn't explain it any other way.
So would you say that having the N+ or CCNA is too much if we don't want to go specifically into networking? I know the basics of the OSI model as you mentioned in the video but how will employers know that I know that without seeing something network cert related on my resume? Should I just go for the S+ instead? Thank you so much for providing all this knowledge btw. I've been in IT application support for at least 8 years now but I want to move up and have a specialty besides app support.
N+ would be fine. CCNA is a harder examine, more hands on the tech itself and is specialized to cisco hardware. A good chunk of the exam is actually configuring virtualized cisco network routers. Really nothing to do with direct security there. I wouldnt invest time/money in CCNA unless you were going to be very hands on network security person (working at a Ciscoshop business). Sec+ is where I'd start. Alot of people will say get networking+ first than security but i didnt and I was fine ( I have a cmpsci bg though so your exp may differ). Having said all that, the N+ cert wont do much for you other than convey to interviewers that you should know networking concepts. Actually knowing them and folding them into your responses (and your actual work) is where the value shines. Best wishes/
@@phabeondominguez5971 haha I actually forgot all about this. But to answer your question I only read through a cisco networking technologies book and was able to apply the knowledge to my job. I'm an application administrator so I really just need to understand some networking along with common ports such as dhcp, static ips, ssh, ftp,sftp,https that was enough for me. I think knowing the information was critical bc I was able to secure a very good pay raise since last year. Good luck!

i have / had (dont maintain it) CCNA. I dont think its needed for infosec. CCNA is super focused on how cisco networks work, and while you do learn about different routing and resiliency and such, i think you can get more value puttting your time elsewhere, sepcially if you have network+.
I am a software developer and i am really interested and have ambition to get a job in cybersecurity especially in ethical hacking. I have studied about general networking stuff, such as WAN, LAN, TCP/IP. If I’m not mistaken, I also taught about to calculate the subnet but until now, I still confuse about it. I also have a background in programming and among of it, I am more comfortable to Python and sometimes I quite struggle for some Python basic, I can reached out to the documentation. But since I only want to know, or to be honest, to re-study the networking basic, is it enough for me to have these foundation and start playing around with the tools such as nmap, wireshark, then start to apply the job in the cybersecurity roles?

It really depends on your career goals and urgency for money. College degree should give you a more grounded, wider exposure to the field, but costs money/takes time. It will help long term, but if you get certs and compliment your resume with labs you should be able to get access to the same opportunities. Thank you for this video, My age is 29 and considering to change my career to Cybersecurity. I don't have a degree in IT / CS. But worked as Network engineer for 2 years. Is it worth taking a 3 year bachelor course in cybersecurity now considering AI in the upcoming years ? How much does AI reduce the jobs in cybersecurity department in future ? I have a passion in the networking field but little worried about the future. Please clear this.
AI will help make our ability to respond faster, but wont replace humans. Threat actors are humans and they can be clever and trick tooling. Humans will use tooling (and AI) to be more efficient and timely in response.
Tech just isn’t what it was. Recruiters and companies have their pick of the litter and bc of that wages are going down alas well. It is to oversaturated out there and even if you are great you still need a connection.

Wild. TCP/ip illustrated is a great text to go deeper on osi. Also when I teach osi I typically just refer to layer 5-7 as just on app layer for ease.

Is it worth taking a 3 year bachelor course in cybersecurity now considering AI in the upcoming years ? How much does AI reduce the jobs in cybersecurity department in future ?
I have a passion in the networking field but little worried about the future. Please clear this.
AI will help make our ability to respond faster, but wont replace humans. Threat actors are humans and they can be clever and trick tooling. Humans will use tooling (and AI) to be more efficient and timely in response.

Tech just isn’t what it was. Recruiters and companies have their pick of the litter and bc of that wages are going down alas well. It is to oversaturated out there and even if you are great you still need a connection.
